Bobby Cassevah Debut Lone Angels Highlight

ANAHEIM, CA - APRIL 09: Matt Palmer #32 of the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim pitches against the Oakland Athletics on April 9, 2010 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images)

Star-divide

While Scott Kazmir was pitching in nearby Rancho Cucamonga for the A-League Quakes, his major league stand-in turned out to be the fall guy - Matt Palmer took the loss in thumping and a half at the bats of the Oakland A's (speaking of single A teams). Hideki Matsui hit a solo HR but I am just mentioning that in the hopes that a million of his fans in Japan decide to search for his name on the internet tomorrow morning.

OTHER ANGELS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Juan Rivera hit a solo HR but nobody in Japan was searching his name on the web.
  • Terry Evans appeared as a late inning defensive replacement wearing Darin Erstad's jersey #17 - the first time an Angel has worn that jersey since Erstad's last game as an Angel in September of 2006.
  • The Angels fielded three players named BOBBY on the field at the same time: Bobby Abreu, Bbby Cassevah and Bobby Wilson. Is that a major league record? I say yes- look it up and prove me wrong.
  • Coincidentally (or ironically for you Robertologists), this Bobby record was possible because of Robb Quinlan's demotion.
  • Bobby Cassevah made his major league debut in the game wearing Darren Oliver's jersey #38 with no seasons in between D.O.'s departure from Anaheim.

LOSER LIMERICK

There once was a pitcher named Palmer
Who looked slightly like Jeffrey Dahmer
Cucamonga took Scott
for a short rehab spot
But nobody in Anaheim stayed Calmer

To be fair

No one in this thread has yet to panic or bitch about Wood’s at bats.

by Teixeira Who? on Apr 9, 2010 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Wood's at bats

shouldn’t exist to begin with. He’s already been given enough AB’s in 2007-2009 to prove he’s a career minor leaguer.

by ttsec on Apr 10, 2010 7:52 AM PDT up reply actions

As real as

Brandon Wood’s career batting avg.

by ttsec on Apr 10, 2010 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Then you're an idiot.

Wood’s playing time up this point in his career has been extremely irregular, as in “play for 1 game, sit on the bench for a week, go to salt lake, come back, sit on the bench for another two weeks, play in one game.” He had a rough stretch in 2008, but when he got called back up in September of that year, he raked.

Let’s give the guy a tad more than 12 ABs of regular playing time—a 12 ABs in which he’s done more than Mark Teixeira and A-Rod have done this year—before we start calling for his head, mmkay?

RIP Nick Adenhart.

by Clutch on Apr 10, 2010 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

My criticism of Brandon Wood is not based on only the first 4 games of this season, it is based on his entire career, and not just numbers, but having visually observed his at bats, demeanor, body language, etc… This guy may have the physical talent, but psycho-emotionally, he doesn’t have MLB makeup.

The difference between Mark Texasera and Arod is that those two have positively proven careers. However, for Brandon Wood, he hasn’t proved anything positive, and so Wood hasn’t earned any leeway.

This is plain ‘ol business sense, you don’t put a guy who has only shown in the past that he can’t hit on a MLB level as your starting 3B when you have better people like Itzturis who hit .300 last season, is sitting on the bench.

by ttsec on Apr 10, 2010 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Again

It’s not as though Wood was brought up at some point last year and handed 400 ABs in a row, as you seem to think. He was brought up and played extremely irregularly, first in 2007 when he was barely out of AA, then in 2008 when he was settling in for the second time at AAA. He raked throughout September 2008 at the major league level—go ahead, look it up, and don’t let the 2008 total fool you—and then we all got to watch him rot on the Angels bench for months at a time in 2009. It is not at all fair to say that Wood “has been given his chance” at this level. That might be fair after, I don’t know, a full 600 AB season at the major-league level, but not until then.

Coincidentally, guess who was given a good 300 or so ABs in a row and produced absolutely nothing? That’s right—Kendry Morales in 2006. Man oh man am I glad we didn’t have you advising the team back then—otherwise Kendry would be mashing for some divisional rival by now…

RIP Nick Adenhart.

by Clutch on Apr 10, 2010 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

I don’t consider myself qualified to psychoanalyze a MLB player’s body language but I can safely say that Wood’s sporadic 200 AB’s (at a time when an average MLB player would have had around 1500) aren’t a legitimate sample size.

What is a legitimate sample size is the fact that during spring training he received a metric shit ton (exact number) of consecutive AB’s and batting right around .280 off of major league pitching. That, along with his minor league numbers, are probably far more legitimate sample sizes. Wood could very well be a dud but nothing he’s done in these 12 AB’s has indicated that.

RE: Scoring "Issue"

Because I grabbed the scores late, it had already calculated your new scores AFTER you had betted. So while it looked like your total score was less than your winnings, that was only the case because you had betted for the next game.

However, there is a small issue where some people may be shortchanged from their 1st Bet (if they bet correctly), that will be remedied soon.

Remember, it is your responsibility to ensure YOUR picks are going correctly. Keep track of your points, and don’t hesitate to contact Rev, foxpaw, or myself if you see an issue. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I encourage you to bug me if you see anything wrong. (Until you cross the line, then… well. What can I do)

I have pix from the Quakes game tonight

Mostly focused on Kaz, Willits, Amarista, and Baird. None of the other names really caught my attention tonight. As soon as I can figure out how to get the pictures off my camera and onto my computer, I’ll post those for you guys. This is what I get for pretty much NEVER taking pictures, I have no idea how to transfer them for your viewing pleasure.

Anyway, it was awesome watching Baird hit the walk-off double in the 10th inning, although I’m surprised I made it that far, cause the game wasn’t too exciting. Kaz looked pretty good out there, but looked completely disinterested in the fact he was pitching in a minor league stadium to minor league batters. Willits looked quite good, made a couple of nice plays in RF, and even showed decent pop from the right side on his double to the RCF gap.

Needless to say, it got kinda cold in the stadium, and minor league games are still minor league games, even when you actually know something about a few of the players playing.

To Angels Stadium in Anaheim tomorrow to turn the losing streak into a winning streak! Go Halos!

I watched the Bees lose by 10 once but stayed the whole time.

I think its really exciting watching prospects, even if they are losing by a whole bunch or the game sucks. From the box score, it looks like Kaz was on until the seventh. On the other hand, it says he gave up 8 hits. Do you think he was experimenting a bit with pitches or still needed to work some stuff out?

Also, awesome about Baird. He has the same last name as me so needless to say I am rooting for him.

Halos & Clips...must have something to do with the color red and jaded pasts...

by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Apr 10, 2010 12:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Kaz looked good.

Only a couple of the hits against him were hit very hard. He was definitely overmatching most of the A-ball hitters with his stuff, as most of the righties were grounding weak out to 1st and lefties to 3rd. He did seem to tire a little bit in the 7th, but it was the reliever after him (Scholl?) who let the runners score. There was one point, I think in the 4th or so, when a time-out was called and a trainer went out to the mound during an at-bat. The conference didn’t last long though, so I’m hoping it was just the trainer being cautious.

Just Another Halo's Victory!

Very Worried...

After the opening day high, the Halos look awful – every part of their game stinks…defense is awful – an A got to second on a basic grounder up the middle, Mathis looked like a little league catcher on a play at the plate, the pitching staff is sending beach ball sized pitches right down the middle, and the hitters (excepting Godzilla) look tentative…this thing needs to be turned around NOW!!!

by Halopauly on Apr 10, 2010 6:47 AM PDT reply actions

Its probably because everyone’s trying to go opposite way. The way you look at some of the swings, its like back in the ALCS with everyone just trying to get the ball out of the infield, with Matsui/Rivera the only ones actually swinging his bat well.

In my opinion
The starting rotation has been good. Weaver, Santana, Pinerio, Saunders (although he’s got to stop giving up long balls). The offense should’ve been able to come back from a 4-1 deficit. Although they pitched against the Twins which actually has a pretty good offense. The As on the other hand, probably have as much offensive capabilities as the Angel’s AAA team. Palmer and Bulger should’ve been able to at least keep it a 1-2 run ball.

by phoenix15 on Apr 10, 2010 8:26 AM PDT reply actions

Rotation has NOT been good

Saunders was worse than Palmer.
Santana gave up 4 over 5 innings, although he didn’t look bad in the process. Ramon Ortiz used to look good in the process of giving up homeruns on all of his mistakes as well.

Weaver and Piniero gave their team a chance to win though.
