Jered Weaver Not Perfect Enough as Angels Errors Doom Ace

Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Rays 4, Angels 3 ... Jered Weaver only allowed one earned run but 3 other runs were scored under his watch and the Angels handed the rubber game of their series with the Rays to Joe Maddon and David Price. A little throwing error in the first inning and two passed balls by catcher Ryan Budde led to the demise of the Anaheim crew. Weaver was masterful, striking out 12 Rays in 7.1 innings pitched. But the bats producing 3 runs could not overcome what the gloves gave away.

Howie Kendrick looked like he wanted to win, hitting two singles and an RBI double, but with DH Mike Napoli striking out three times, Scioscia countered the futility with Hideki Matsui... only to see the big offseason acquisition ground out weakly to end the 8th inning. Meanwhile Vladimir Guerrero is 2 for 4 with a solo homer and 2 runs scored tonight in Texas.

I'm thinking it's about panic time.

I’m not sure this team is going to get any better.

We’ve got lousy starting pitching (except for Weaver), terrible relievers, horrific defensive team with grandpas in the outfield, and our offense is anemic at best.

I’m officially worried.

I've got nothing.

No wonder so many fans think Mathis is actually a good catcher when they see crap like this. Remind me why the Angels jettisoned Jose Molina again?

by Suboptimal on May 12, 2010 8:08 PM PDT reply actions

Why we traded Jose Molina

Because he hits like Brandon Wood. Defense alone can’t win ballgames. Sometimes you have to hit the ball. Just ask the Mariners.

This is good

"Weaver stepped up once again as a leader on this team by picking up his catcher and stating that its baseball and those things happen.Weaver also stated that the 2nd passed ball which came as a result of he and Budde being crossed up on the signs could have been either players fault. "

It’s nice that Weaver can manage to be fiery and competitive on the field, but is still standing by his teammates and not pointing fingers.

Angels

Ive been trying to get the Dodgers to go after Zack Granick—Maybe The Angels can put together some prospects for him? And what about Pedro Martinez? Also there are many good hitters out there that can help -Dye? Crawford? I would give Wood about 100 more at bats and if that doesnt work trade him-He might do well with another team-He does have the talent but it just doesnt seem to be working right now-How about this——Wood-Kazmir and 3 prospects for Zack? KC just might do that?

by spc7 on May 13, 2010 8:35 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

The only flaw is

You’d have to pay KC to take Wood. Take Wood out of the deal and they may go for it.

by ttsec on May 13, 2010 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Lackey

John Lackey was a great Angel-But I still would have never paid him that kind of money-We miss Vladdy and Figgy both-we would be at least 5 to 6 games better with them now!

by spc7 on May 13, 2010 8:38 AM PDT reply actions

I think we only miss Vladdy in the sense of keeping the latin players together (this is my suspicion). The only reason I think he is hitting in Texas is:

A. Arlington Stadium

B. The gigantic amount of offensive pressure on him as an Angel is most definitely no longer there as a Ranger (and that was my issue with him while he wore red, he needed to relax and he could be a great hitter for us….but he couldn’t).

by Dontbatvlad4th on May 13, 2010 8:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Vlad is hitting in Arlington consistent with what he's done there his whole career

On the road he’s hitting a robust .226 or thereabouts. Whioch wouldn’t have done us any good except for the 9 games we play in Texas.

I am fan various years ago.

by Fred Fredrix on May 13, 2010 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but the heat in Arlington certainly helped the ball travel

Plus Vlad hit against Texas pitching, not for Texas pitching.

Simply put (and as I screamed all offseason), Vlad isn’t done. One crappy year doesn’t negate his talent. Of course, Vlad’s numbers wouldn’t be discussed as much if Mothra remembered how to hit about .250.

Are you suggesting

that Rex Hudler make a comeback as a player? He will hit and field better than Wood.

by ttsec on May 13, 2010 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions

nope

I was commentiong on him being back on the pregame radio broadcasts. yesterday was his first day back. but I think he’s only doing them before every Tuesday home game, which makes no sense. he must be enjoying his time off…how many times a week do you think he visits the local dipsensary?

by 2pintsofbooze on May 13, 2010 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

That was a day from hell for a player

Budde looked woeful behind the plate. The two passed balls equaled two “gimme” runs. A 3-2 Angel win turns into a 4-3 Angel loss. Weaver is 4-2 instead of 5-1.

And to top that off, he looks even worse, like he doesn’t have his head in the game, when he starts heading off to the dugout after only two outs, making Weaver have to call out to him to stop and come back. That’s the kind of thing that makes a player want to dig a hole behind the plate to hide themselves in. Errors are a part of the game, but mental errors infuriate a manager.

At least he has the solace of knowing he’s not the only one on the team blowing chunks. Clutch hitting and solid relief pitching seems to be stuck off in some sig alert down the freeway. The starter’s ERA looks even worse due to the relievers allowing a whopping 50% of inherited runners to score.

It would be one thing if it was only a couple holes that needed to be filled, but right now the pitching, hitting, running and defense looks like swiss cheese. It’s hard to figure out where to even start.

The team just looks so lifeless and bland out there. No enthusiasm, no chemistry. They don’t seem young and frisky. The Whiz Kids look like the Wheeze Kids. It’s hard to have a running game when so many of your players look like they have a hard enough time just walking to the plate. Seems to be a lack of cohesiveness and game plan. Maybe once they “gel” and get that fire back they’ll roar right back into the race. Here’s hoping.
