Rex Hudler: Joe Saunders Needs to "Get Nasty"

From Tuesday's AM-830 Rex Hudler Show ... Co-Hosts Jeff Biggs and Jason Brennan got Rex talking about the current struggles that Angels All Star lefty Joe Saunders is undergoing. Hud did not shy away form confronting the problem as he sees it and critiqued Joe's approach in great detail. The audio clip below is two minutes:

Classic Rex

Like the guy…But all brushing back hitters is gonna do for Saunders is contribute to him falling behind in counts more. With his lack of control right now, he probably will end up hitting guys if he actively tries to brush guys off the plate.

Maybe his problem has more to do with…lack of stuff/control?

Stuff was always mediocre.

But he’s always had good control. That’s how he wins, get ahead, and force the batter to swing at a pitcher’s pitch. And Rex isn’t talking about “brushing back” he’s talking about pitching agressively inside. Saunders has almost abandoned the upper inside portion of the plate. Hitter’s know this, so they’re cheating out over the plate. Then Saunder’s get’s a little roughed up and starts nibbling, which is NOT the Joe Saunders who has been winning the last two years.

Yes he did, but I doubt he's doing it again.

I think I recall him saying he realized it was a bad idea, so I can’t see him doing it again.

C'mon--there's more to it than that

Symbolically, Rex is making a point about the whole team: they need to get nasty (agree with Rex and DOV), get crazy, get mean, GET PASSIONATE AND KICK SOME ASS!!
Interesting how the most passionate intense guy on the team right now is the one who IS kicking the most ass—Weave.
Rex is offering a player’s advice in at least suggesting some concrete ways to build up a little fire in Joe, build up his confidence, and the brushback is just one tactic—according to him. He’s not just saying “he needs to pitch better,” he’s offering advice, and trying to do what Wonderdog does the best: get people pumped up!
