Not Having Vlad Hurts.
I am trying to make a habit of going to The Insider Website Rev posted recently, you know, to escape you lunatics and your Brandon Wood ranting. It seems like it has the makings of a solid site, but its still very much in its infancy stages. I do, however, appreciate the kind of prospective the authors have (although, Bigsy, really, stop using so many "...."s. Its annoying and comes across as unintelligent in a website medium.) and will give them my clicks in hope that in turns out to be something we can all really be proud of.
Today I came across an article that made me a bit depressed. The article itself does all the number crunching for me, so I dont have to. Go ahead and check it out for the comparisons stat wise, but this fanpost is more on the emotional side.
I am not afraid to say it, I F'ing love Vladimir Guerrero. The guy scored from second on ground ball out for god sakes. Sure, Hideki Matsui brings in revenue from people who only like baseball because of Japanese Marketing that involves shiny lights and lasers. Sure he won the World Series MVP last year. Sure he has an enormous collection of hentai tentacle porn . He is also dashingly good looking.
However, I dont care. At all.
There is such an emotional disconnection from this guy that I literally could care less how he preforms, as long as the teams wins. Gone are the "Oh Shit, Vlad is batting, stop and watch brosef!" days. I had legitimate, genuine emotional investment in every Vlad at bat. Even now, as Texas is winning, I still watch Vlad's at bats with the expectation of awesome. I watch Matsui's at bats when I dont feel like getting up to get a sandwich.
I miss this guy. Sometimes the business side of baseball is brutal, for fans and players alike. I think this is one move that not only made no sense, but, also let one of the most dynamic hitters of the last 30 years and a possible future hall of famer walk to a divison rival. Now I have to root for a player that I personally have a man crush on while also rooting against his team and also putting up with ugly mcasian porn guy because it put a few extra dollars in Arte's pockets.
Bah humbug.

Ya, from an emotional standpoint, I miss Vlad.
But as far as the numbers go, I’m fine with Matsui
Vlad’s numbers are better than Matsui’s this year….
Vlad – 21 runs, 7 hrs, 31 rbi’s, 4 sb, .340 avg
Matsui – 12 runs, 5 hrs, 19 rbi, 0sb, .234 avg
In Kobe we trust!
Vlad's also playing in a bandbox
and Matsui is slumping right now.
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

What was Matsui playing in his whole MLB career
He loved Yankee Stadium and thrived there. Say what you want about Texas and the stadium but Vlad has hit no matter where he has played.

No one is arguing that, but Vlad has hit better in Texas than anywhere else.
And Matsui actually hit better outside of Yankee stadium last year
Not true
He loved Riverfront , and he killed it in Phil

He's played a lot more in Texas than either of those though.
Let me rephrase what I said though. "Vlad hits much better in Texas than almost anywhere else. "
I know that, I meant what their numbers are likely to be at the end of the season.
I doubt there will be a huge difference at the end of the season
There will be a big difference, but it would not have been as big a difference had Vlad stayed in Anaheim...
My pre-season prediction:
Matsui: 260, 19HR, 90RBI
Vlad: 310, 29HR, 90RBI
It ain’t gonna be close average-wise and home-run-wise.
Had Vlad stayed in Anaheim, I pegged him at like 25 jimmy jacks. Matsui just isn’t going to be equal to Vlad. But, our management did not want a two-year commitment to a player who may really be 40.
I love this team.

I was starting to miss Vlad too.......
till the other day when the Rangers were down 2 and Vlad was pinching hitting late……and had the bases loaded with 1 one out…….
Guess what he did?

Its okay. We’ll always have the memories……especially 2004.

I'm in agreement emotionally.
I miss Vlad. He was fun to watch and he put up big numbers when he was healthy. That having been said, I feel that Matsui was the safer choice to sign as DH between the two.
Matsui will (hopefully) break out of his funk and start hitting, and his only major health problem since coming to the majors (i think, though I could be wrong) was when he broke his wrist diving for a ball a few years back. From a numbers stand point, Matsui was the safer choice, while Vlad was the high-risk/high-reward choice.
Vlad certainly looks like he would have been the better choice, but when Reagins made the choice, he chose the safer player.
I was totally wrong about Matsui and injuries/health. I’m having another off day today. ignore that part of my thought.

I miss Vlade and Chone AND REX, those guys represented the heart of the Angels for me.
There was way to much change for me this off-season. I feel the same way as far as Vlade goes, every time he was up I would give the game my undivided attention.
Sure Matsui was the safer choice, but I am a big loyalty guy, and I feel Vlade should retire a halo!

Vlade was a major part of the our Halo communal psyche
We all miss having the big guy in the lineup, hacking away at the ball, clambering down the line, a big dopey grin on his face.
Godzilla is like a Samurai Terminator—all biz, no play…
As for Bigsy and his use of the double quotations to emphasize “specialized meaning” (a rhetorical strategy not endorsed by either MLA or APA documentation), I always laugh at that—it reminds me of Chris Farley and his pissed off guy on the SNL news putting all of his comments in quotes: “People say I ‘smell bad’ and I ‘look like a bum’” etc….

how much money did we really save from not signing Vlad. I didnt like the off-season signing of Matsui all that much and even though the idea of a player being the “face of a franchise”…no one seemed to embody it more than Vlad.
Someone the other day asked me who my favorite Angel was. I almost said Vlad but then immediately remembered…damn…dude’s a ranger!
I dont even know who my favorite angel is anymore. I miss the Impaler!
On another note, my girlfriend has all but stopped rooting for the Angels since Vlad left. She’s pissed. It might take a year for it to wear off….

Vladdy was looking for a multi year deal at the time, and ended up settling for 1 year deal with a mutual option
The Angels didn’t end up saving much, but it took Vlad another month to settle for the deal he took. As much as I like Vlad, I can’t blame the team for not wanting to wait around to see if Vlad would take a 1 year deal.

Disagree
Yes, let the Ninja sign Bobby Abreu to 2-3 yeear deal with at least 19 million guaranteed. It’s one thing to get Bobby at a value…going almost $10 mil a yr for a 36 yr old outfielder….really smart. Then they went cheap on someone that meant so much to the team…unbelievable.
Vlad meant a lot to the Angels Franchise….he deserved the benefit of the doubt over Matsui. This whole “he’s playing in Arlington” nonsense is BS…pitchers are the same no matter where you go. There are bandboxes everywhere, Yankees stadium for one…and it’s not out of the ordinary to hit better at home. Let’s diminish Yankee Greats while we’re at it.
It’s called Home court, or for you baseball fans, Home field.
Over the past few yrs, KRod, GA, Lackey, Figgins, and Vlad have all left. I remember KRod leaving….many HH members defended it by “comparing stats” with Fuentes and stating the Front office was saving money to Re-sign Lackey. Well now the team is paying big money for two closers in Fuentes and FRod…and Lackey is in Boston.
The Front Office is trying to outsmart themselves. When there is a winning core, it’s probably a good idea to keep certain members around…..

rec’d dude… the Angels front office definitely seemed to have over thunk themselves!
What i wouldnt give to have K-Rod back as our closer, Fuentes literally gives me nightmares! especially with the stache and the blowing of 3 run leads! 3 runs!?
Abreu might have been a great RBI guy, but now that we have no chone, we have nobody on base for him to drive home. Reagins definitely got a little cocky in himself, when Tex walked and we just filled his stats with the Cuban Missile.
He definitely thought lightening would strike twice… no 3 times by having both Aybar develop into a great everyday lead-off guy, and Wood living up to the hype, which is never a guarantee
In Kobe we trust!
So what's the solution?
Fire Reagins? Scioscia? What are the answers?

its just all about reflecting back on how this all happened. if our FO just waited i’m sure things could have turned out different. it is what it is. we have to deal with what we have. i never understood the Matsui singing in the first place.
I think the FO assummed that Vlad...
was physically incapable of putting up good numbers anymore. The thought he was a DL stint or two waiting to happen. So far this year they were wrong. But I don’t think it’s them being down on his performance but rather his ability to stay on the field.
I feel bad saying this, but I still expect that 1 of those stints is going to happen this year

lets say we didnt sign Vlad or Matsui…big friggin deal. We can then have a rotating DH spot made up of Abreu and Napoli. This would give Mathis more time behind the plate and allowed some prospects like Evans or Willits or even Bourjos to get more AB’s.
Shit, at this point, I almost wish we had Abreu DH’ing, Willits and Evans taking turns in RF. Sounds a whole hell of a lot better than what we got now.

Really, you rather have Abreu + Willits/Evans than Abreu and Matsui?
The guy who’s shown he can produce at the MLB level for years is struggling, and we’re to the point where Reggie Willits getting more playing time sounds like a good idea?
When you consider defense, yes
We’d have a weaker bat replacing Matsui and a stronger glove in right. If we had waited there still would have been other choices. For one, Jermaine Dye is still out there. Jack Cust could have been claimed off waivers. And whoever had signed Matsui, they would have not signed somebody else, and that player would be available at DH.
I miss Vlad.

But that's assuming what we have right now continues.
I see no reason to assume Matsui will continue to struggle like he has.
He has been in the majors for several years now, and April has been his worst month throughout his career.
Also, while Matsui has been struggling, Reagins has to make decisions on paper.
Pretend it’s the beginning of the season, which lineup sounds better?
One that has Hideki Matsui and Bobby Abreu in it all the time, and Mike Napoli roughly half the time, with Jeff Mathis in Napoli’s spot the rest of the time.
Or, one that has Bobby Abreu and Mike Napoli in the lineup almost everyday(Assuming Abreu plays the field when Napoli is DHing, and Naps catches most of the time while Abreu DHs) but also has Reggie Willits/Jeff Mathis/Bobby Wilson in it every day
I like one with Terry Evans....
in it. Also if you platoon Willits, at least it would give him a shot at being a good lead-off man.
ALL I am saying is that if we didnt get either Matsui or Vlad, I dont think things would be all that bad. I am not saying that would be better, Im just saying it wouldn’t have been as big of a deal as we all thought.
I mean really, your replacing one hitter with bad knees with another hitter with bad knees. Whats the difference? Matsui grounds out into DP’s less. Yeah, but Vlad hits for better average and power.
I dunno…I see your point, I just see the angels now with MANY declining players and not a whole lot of speed. What does that remind you of? Mid-nineties Angels? You bet.

I agree that the team doesn't have a whole lot of speed and has quite a few declining players
But I don’t think having Matsui for 1 year is really a huge part of that problem.
Here’s a positive though, next year we could see Bourjos in the outfield and we all know he has speed
Isn't he struggling at the plate, though?
I’d love to see him here too, but we need speed that will be used on the basepaths, not just the path from the dugout to the batter’s box and the OF.

PhiSlamma must have been frosting cupcakes when Vlad would hit a single
that should have been a double, but was’nt, because his knees were just too lame all last year to carry him on to second base. I won’t even mention how bad he was playing the field because of his chronic knees. Phi must have been trying to decide which “sprinkles” to use on the cupcakes and missed all the at bats where Vlad so often grounded weakly in to double plays.
I’m not hot at all on Matsui, but I am glad Tony Reagins saw the writing on the wall and moved on from Guerrero. I am glad Vlad has done well in Texas and I feel like he needed to prove something to himself and his playing ability, a drastic contrast from his phoning it in so often in Anaheim. Vlad was not that healthy last year and with a player of his age and wear, it was a big risk to sign him for a few years more.

Vlad
has been hitting well in Arlington but nowhere else. Everyone seems to just be looking at his overall BA, HR stats, RBI, etc.., but Vlad’s splits from road/home is a lot. Matsui’s with his slump is hitting just about Vlad is on the road. So if the Angels became the Anaheim Angels of Arlington, then maybe the management would sign Vlad for 2 more years.
Road
HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
1 12 3 5 3 1 .258 .299 .323 .621
Home
HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
6 19 4 11 1 1 .402 .429 .683 1.112
UHHHHH....
HERE IS MATSUI’S LINE ON THE ROAD:
BA: .182
OBP: .258
SLG: .287
HR: 1
RBI: 5
K: 14
BB: 6
So when you say that Vlad and Matsui are just about equal on the road, you were literally TALKING OUT OF YOUR ASS, correct?
Oh and as far as Plate Appearances on the road, Hideki has 5 more than Vlad. Now look at that K rate. Now look at that BB rate, now look at…you get the point.

I think that Vlad and Matsui are a wash....
Vlad might be hitting better at the moment- but Matsui will break out of his funk their career numbers are similar.
Matsui is a more patient hitter which, it is crucial to have a patient hitter in the heart of the lineup, remember Teix, something that sometimes killed me about Vlad- but I also secretly loved it.
HOWEVER
I would take Vlad in a heartbeat over Matsui- just because of the reasons you stated- Vlad was my hero. Literally my childhood hero… Whenever I would step up to the plate in community softball leagues I would tell all my friends to look out because “big daddy vladdy” was stepping up to the plate. Vlad meant so much more to the Angels Organization than his numbers. He was the face of our franchise. The part that makes it hard for me is the fact that Vlad wanted to stay- and looking at his contract in Texas we could really afford him- It reminds me of what Lackey said
Why couldn’t the Angels take a risk on a guy that gave so much of us fans a reason to cheer?
What are all of us fans with 5 Guerrero jersey’s supposed to do? Well- much like you cheering for Vladdy when he bats for Texas- I wear my jersey proudly. I wore it to the HH get together Sat.
I know that upstairs wanted to turn the page and I respect that- but I’m going to take quite some time to turn this page…

But weren’t his demands of the Angels greater than what he accepted from Texas? As I recall the Angels expressed a willingness to sign him as a full-time DH for a year, but he wanted more years and time in RF. I could be wrong, but it seems to me Vlad is just as much to blame for his leaving as was the FO.

I don’t take the FO company line without a grain of salt, but I do believe they did want to keep Vlad on terms that didn’t constitute undue risk. Anyone who remembers him limping around the bases last year would have to admit that the terms Vlad wanted were risky.

If I recall correctly, Vladdy was initially looking to be someone's full time RF or at least play a significant amount of time in the outfield
Matsui was looking to play LF once a week or so
I'm talking about what he wanted to do when the Angels signed Matsui.
If I recall correctly, he was looking to play quite a bit in the OF.
And Vladdy has played the outfield this year, in fact he’s played just as much OF as Matsui.
I recall MMP's opinion as the correct one...
it was, after all, only about 6 months ago.

by Downing Rules on May 20, 2010 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions
He DID want to play the outfield, but he didn’t turn down any offer from the Angels. And I swear I either saw it in a n interview or read it that he said they never made him a formal offer and that if they had he would have stayed at the end of the day. I just can’t find it anywhere, but I know I didn’t hallucinate it…..I HOPE I didn’t hallucinate it!
I think I read the same thing - MLB.com article if I recall
However, there’s really no way to know for sure what went down. It’s not like the front office is going to tell us. I don’t know much about Vlad’s agent, but lawyers are always wheelin’ and dealin’ – I know because I work with a bunch of them. Perhaps an offer was made and Vlad’s agent wanted more. Maybe his agent approached the Rangers first?
No matter what happened, Vlad’s agent and the FO are both responsible for him no longer being an Angel. I’m sure we’ll never find out which is primarily at fault.

I am hearing more and more bad things about our front office. I am moving down in my “front office confidence factor” from a solid 100% to, say, 80%.

by Downing Rules on May 21, 2010 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, like Nate said, obviously we'll never know for sure what happened.
But as far as never making an offer, that could just be wording. It’s possible that the FO and Vlad’s agent talked. Through those conversations the FO figured out that Vlad wanted more than they were willing to give him, so a formal “offer” was never made, not because they didn’t want him back, but because they knew he wouldn’t accept it.
We may not know for sure what happened, but I find it pretty hard to believe that the FO didn’t show any interest in bringing him back.
Not Having Vlad Hurts ...

Quantifying the Angels woes.
For all you stat heads, I think the biggest difference between this year and last is that we have 2 less smiles. Vlad and Chone were replaced with Matsui and Wood. That is the main reason why this team is more glum. Also, their crappy playing is sort of a factor, but I really miss seeing those guys’ joy for the game.

Less Angels fans here in OC and the US give a crap
about the sad old little Lizzard, and it is easy to say that if Arte signed this guy with the idea that Matsui will sell in Japan, well than Arte fucked up on this decision when it comes down to how Godzilla will be percieved versus Vladdy. Vladdy will be far more loved and productive than Godzilla will ever be as an Angel.
Don’t care about Matsui. Love watching Vladdy bat.
When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!
I agree. Vladdy is ten times more entertaining to watch than Matsui.
After all, isn’t baseball all about entertainment? I want to be entertained, not marketed too.

Vladdy enjoys playing the game and it is obvious.
That is what endears him to his fans. Watch the first time he comes back here to play. I know I will be there, standing and cheering and chanting his name.
and another thing, my girlfriend doesn't even watch the games anymore.
Her top Favs were Vladdy, and Figgy. Her first was Jose Molina. ‘sigh’.

You definitely hit this one out of the park, Phi
I mean that not having Vlad anymore is emotionally a bummer—despite his lack of clutch hitting he was a tremendously popular player and his image resonates with all of us in a positive manner.
For instance, I was thinking about him the other night and I realized he is one player I will never want to see do badly—unless it’s like the end of the game against us or something along those lines. I will always be a Vladdy fan.
One wonders what our record would be if...
We had Figgins, Lackey, Vlad and Oliver instead of Wood, Pineiro, Matsui and Rodney.
Would it be better? Yes. Would we win the division? Not if the rest of the team is playing the way it is now. On top of that we’d be stuck with an additional 6 years worth of contracts and another 100 million or so on the hook to pay them.
Add Vlad to that group too
Really the only player that is performing is Oliver.

you're kidding right?
Vlad has 10 homers is batting about 340 or so.
Take him out of Arlington and he's merely ordinary.
Of course, “merely ordinary” is better than Matsui right now.

he leads the majors in RBI’s, is second in Avg. and 4th in home runs. Say whatever you want about the split, but saying he isn’t producing is just weird, sad and flat out untrue. Even if he was doing all that at home (which he isn’t), it’s still production. Impressive production at that.

Yes it is impressive
but to believe he would have put up those numbers had he still been with the Angel is disillusion. His stats are a product of Arlington.

until last night...
he had about half the plate appearance away (67) vs. home (119). You are talking about a sample size that is very small. Look at his numbers for the past 28 days and 14 days, respectively, and you will see that he has been heating up over the past month, even more so over the past two weeks. It’s more likely that he is getting hot in general.
Wait
You tell me I’m looking at a small sample size then you want me to look at an even smaller one?
He may be getting hot, but before last nights 3-5 2 hrs 1dbl 5 RBI night he was hitting .258 1 hr 1 dbl and 12 RBI’s in 18 games away from Arlington.
You may not like it, but everything he does this year will be enhanced by Arlington, he would not have those numbers had the Angels resigned him
I play music for your entertainment
His numbers last year at Arlington were down just like everywhere else. This year his numbers at Arlington are back to what they normally have been. It’s not a question of whether his numbers would be the SAME, it’s how they would compare to a normal Vlad year. You guys saying his splits are horrible are making the argument that he would not be producing out of Texas. It’s a silly argument, considering his numbers in Anaheim have always been pretty damned good too.
Looking at his health, the way he’s hitting and running it is perfectly reasonable to say he would have likely thrown up another .300 and 25 hr year here in Anaheim. The ballpark hasn’t improved his overall health.
However when I made that comment
He wasn’t hitting anywhere outside of Arlington, so my point was valid. If he can continue to perform like he is now, then cool Texas had a great find.
I still don’t think we made a mistake. Vlad was asking for something we weren’t willing to give, so we moved on. It’s business. Take your emotions out of the equation & you’ll see why this move made sense.
I play music for your entertainment
It's the Matsui thing that is a bit puzzling
Matsui is just as unhealthy and a year older than Vlad (we think) and our outfield is already crowded and aging with a 30 year old Rivera being the youngest.
I think a better decision would have been to have Napoli be the primary DH and spend that $6 million on relievers/utility guys.

Ya, Napoli or even Abreu DHing would have worked
The more I think about it, the more I’m a little iffy on the Matsui signing. It certainly wasn’t bad, but I’m not sure I would have done it.
Then again, this all kind of falls under “Hindsight is 20/20” if Matsui was tearing it up, we probably wouldn’t be having this discussion
Vlad wanted a mult year deal from us...
we were able to grab Matsui for one year.
I think in hindsight your idea looks good but I think in the off-season if we had just let Vlad walk and replaced him with nobody people would have been completely freaking out instead of just sorta freaking out.
At this point I think Napoli is on point to DH starting next season.
I think had more to do with him being Left Handed
With Figgins moving on, it left the line up with 1 Lefty 2 switch hitters & 6 Righties if Napoli had been the starting DH.
I play music for your entertainment
Oh, I think they thought that they could get similar production with Matsui for about the same price Vlad would take and they would get the added benefit of the Japanese revenue stream. I think that is pretty much how the story went. It makes good business sense on paper, and I won’t disagree with that.
However……thus far, they have LOST production on the field and signs point to the notion that they would have seen increased production from Vlad this year over last. I don’t know what impact the Japanese deal has had on Arte’s wallet, but I can guarantee that if this team doesn’t improve dramatically, we’re going to see a LOT more empty seats at our stadium by season’s end. Not to mention the effect it has on your roster who see you drop a fan favorite, clubhouse favorite, hall of famer-to-be simply because it seemed to make good business sense at the time.
The roster is full of Professionals
They get paid to play the game and know they are assets to the company they work for. they know they can be traded, waived, or sent down to the minors at anytime. (I know not all players can be sent to the minors or traded)
The biggest affect a move like this has is on the fans. Its change & people don’t like it.

It is hard to admit a mistake
I was in favor of letting Vlad go because of his recent apparent decline in performance and in health despite what was supposed to be corrective surgery. It now appears that the team (and I) gave up on Vlad too early. Vlad is having a great season, and his performance cannot be explained away by his home/road splits.
On the other hand, there is an old adage in baseball — better to let a player go a year too early than a year too late. I think that after 2009, the Angels concluded that Vlad was no longer healthy enough to contribute for a whole season. They may still end up being correct about that. We will have to wait and see.
With an option for a second though

But when the Angels signed Matsui, he was looking for a multi year deal, hence the Matsui signing.

Well written, I miss Vladdy. I think the team misses him too, in every way. I think letting him go was a huge mistake.
What are his career numbers in Anaheim?
Pretty sure they would have warranted a Matsui-like deal had one been possible.

Right, but he demanded a multi-year deal.
The Halos were not going to pony up. Vlad settled for much less in TX. I wish we could have at least matched the deal. Not sure of the internal communication on the whole thing, but it seems that bridges get crossed that cannot be gone back across (see Frankie Rodriguez expecting $15M when he had a 11.3M offer on the table from the halos finally settling on $12M).
I love this team.

I don’t, nor have I seen anything that suggests they made any serious effort to retain Vlad. I’m sure they talked to his agent, but there is no evidence whatsoever that any formal offer was made. That kind of thing almost always ends up in the press. Their plans did not include Vlad.
Obviously we don't know how the discussions went, but no formal offer being made, doesn't mean they had no interest in keeping Vlad.
It’s possible through discussions with his agent they realized that what they were willing to give him and what Vlad wanted were so far off, that making a formal offer was pointless.
Once again, none of us know for sure though
Moreno: “How many years does Vlad want?”
Agent: “two”

That’s how I think it went down.

Is there a link to this story?
I have never heard of Vlad demanding a multi year deal, or refusing to be a full time dh anywhere but here. The only thing I have actually read was the quote from Vlad himself that stated he was never offered a contract from the Angels and he would have taken a deal if it had been offered. So if you could provide a link or any kind of proof of these outrageous demands I would much appreciate it.

Many proofs of my statment:
OC Register:
Snippet from Bill Plunkett, staff writer in the comments section:
“Early in the off-season, Guerrero’s reps were firm in seeking a multi-year deal from the Angels.”
Mark Saxon ESPN Blog and also a Register reporter (former?)
Snippet: The Angels decided early last winter that Guerrero wasn’t in their plans, especially after his agent made it known he was seeking a multi-year deal."
TR Sullivan of MLB.com through MLBtraderumors.com
Snippet: “Sullivan notes that the Rangers have interest in veterans Vladimir Guerrero and Jermaine Dye, but that Vlad is looking for a multi-year deal, while Dye may not want to sign with a team that will use him primarily a DH.”
Downing Rules’ additional comments:
I don’t think Vlads demands were outrageous, btw. Were you saying MY STATEMENTS are outrageous? If you think my statements were outrageous, then you were just pwned.

by Wally's World on May 27, 2010 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions
He wasn't willing to take a 1 year deal when the Angels signed Matsui.
If the Angels wanted to wait around for who knows how long to see if he would get a multi year deal, then he might have finally settled for a 1 year deal.
However, the Angels wanted the DH spot secured early on and Matsui was willing to take a 1 year deal.
Thanks for the links
This is why the Matsui signing made sense at the time, especially considering that Vlad had declined and had significant health issues while Matsui had remained consistent. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Splits
Wow – this is the dumbest shit I’ve heard. You can’t entirely blame Vlad’s production on the fact that he does well at Arlington.
Last time I checked, Arlington was a location. It wasn’t a hitting coach or a PED. It just happens that he hits well in Arlington coincidentally.
More importantly, I think it is Vlad’s health that contributed to his success so far this year.
Angels 2009 WS Champs
I don't think anyone is saying his production is 100% because of Arlington.
But I think it’s certainly helping him.
Adding to the point of his health, I think being let go by the Angels and then not getting many offers from teams motivated him to prove them wrong. He said that his offseason routine this year was a lot more intense than in years past.

I also think lack of pressure helps
Throughout Vlad’s career in Anaheim, he was expected to carry our offense to the World Series. I think that playing in relative obscurity for a Rangers team that has not done anything in years also is helping him.

but to bolster Brody’s statement… Vlad is not the “big contract” free agent for the Rangers in 2010 that he was to the Halos in 2004.

Yeah, he did... what's your point?
Read the thread instead of scanning.
Brody: Lack of pressure helps Vlad
Jack Frost: Anaheim is low pressure
Downing Rules: Anaheim had more pressure, as it was a big contract; 2010 Vlad has little pressure, because it is not a big contract.
a4a: (out of left field) duh, he won the MVP in 2004.
How does your statement fit into that? Help me. Maybe I am dumb.

by Downing Rules on May 30, 2010 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions
Vlad has performed well under low pressure (Montreal),
higher pressure (Anaheim), and low pressure again (Texas).
You dudes are reading way to much into the pressure thing. I honestly don’t think Vlad gives two shits about pressure, especially pressure put on by the media.
I still don’t get if you are agreeing or disagreeing with Brody, because you said you were going to “bolster” his statement, but then you proceeded to disprove it.
Brody: Lack of pressure helps Vlad
Jack Frost: Anaheim is relatively low pressure
Downing Rules: Anaheim should be considered high pressure, because of his big contract in 2004; 2010 was a smaller contract, so he’s performing better.
So which is it? Because if you’re saying Vlad can’t hit under pressure, and you said 2004 was high pressure, and he won MVP in 2004, then you need to revise something. Or at least clarify, preferably without talking down to me, because it super hurts my feelings.
"Precious in the sight of the Lord, is the death of His Saints." - Psalm 116:15 Rest In Peace, Nick.
Ah I see where you went ...
Vlad can hit under any pressure… you are right.
But, IMHO, the change of scenery helped him this year in the 2009 low point of his career performance to the 2010 ass-kicking that is going on.
I did not intend to go to the point where “under pressure” equaled poor performance. That’s where I made my mistake in not being clear. In 2004, Vlad was under somewhat high pressure (yes, a big contract, but it is still laid-back Anaheim) and lived up to our expectations.
Sorry if I spoke down to you.

In fact, it’s almost 400 points lower on the road. That comined with the much lower average is incredibly odd.
Still though, he also hit quite well over his career in Anaheim, so I think he would have performed well here too if he had been brought back. Whether or not that was ever really possible is uncertain.
