Scouting Reports: Garrett Richards/ Fabio Martinez

EDIT: Rev Halofan Here: Frankie Piliere is a former pro scout who wanted you all to read his analysis of two of our top prospects. HE is employed as a scout by FanHouse, a partner site of SBN. Enjoy!

I wanted to be sure I got the reports on these guys in front of you.  I was in Peoria this week to check out the Angels' visiting Low-A Cedar Rapids club.  I chose to fly out and see them because, well, look at their roster.  I wasn't disappointed.  We'll be posting some more reports on guys like Trout, Grichuk, Segura in the coming days but here are the reports I did on two tremendously talent righties, Fabio Martinez and Garrett Richards.

Excellent stuff

Glad to hear more good scouting reports on Richards, despite the recent shaky performances. Also, there’s good video up now on Fabio Martinez Mesa at www.futureangels.com .

Watched the new vids of Trout and Grichuk that were up.

And Grichuk’s swing is ALL arms. Is it probably safe to say that he is gonna be a year behind Trout, or is Trout that far advanced out of HS?

Alright Brandon, you're free..........and we're waiting.

I think Grichuk is being coached to go the other way

He’s definitely tinkering, based on the difference between the predraft footage and what we see now, but I think that’s in an effort to become a more complete player. You can see more, non-Future Angels video on Grichuk in April here. He works the count, and then pokes a breaking ball to the opposite field. Arms heavy, like you say, but he’s a longterm project, they’re trying to make him a confident, all-around hitter, and I think he’s making a good showing so far in May. You also have to remember league context — so far, through April and early May in the Midwest League, Grichuk has actually been around league average at the plate, and compares favorably to other teenage bats.

Thanks for that rghan.

Cool, thanks for the great reads!

It is exciting, especially considering our current pitching woes, to know we have a lot of potential on the way.

From the sound of it, this scout is more excited about Martinez

Sounds to me like John Lackey and Ervin Santana version 2. So what’s the 2013 rotation look like now? Santana, Richards, Martinez, Reckling, Chatwood? Assuming Weaver goes the way of Boras, Saunders, Pinata and Kaz aren’t resigned.

I didn't get that at all.

In fact, it sounded like he thought Richards had more upside, but was the greater project. The fact that someone his age with four quality pitches is completely salvageable as a reliever if he washes out as a starter is an incredible hedge for the organization.

How do Martinez or Richards remotely resemble John Lackey?

Halowood, you run completely on enthusiasm. Slow down, stop speed reading, and allow yourself to think a little bit. You might actually produce some useful analysis to accompany the data hoovering.

by Turks Teeth on May 9, 2010 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I should have explained myself better...

Richards reminds me of Lackey in that they are both physically imposing creatures from the South. They both offer a strong fastball, very good curve that should probably be used more, and a tailing change. Richards happens to use one more pitch that Lackey generally doesn’t. However, that’s probably where the similarities end. By age 22, Lacks was throwing in the World Series. Richards i in A ball.

Martinez I believe resembles Santana more. The taller, thin body type, electric heater, and killer slider. I’d love to see Martinez jump through the system in the same manner as Santana, but that seems doubtful, I’ve seen him and in my amateur opinion he has work to do.

Please quit with the advice TT. You assumed I was all excited and words just hot out of my mouth. Reality is I typed down what I know and think, but failed to clarify as I incorrectly assumed everyone already made these connections.

I love this stuff. Thank you.

Interesting insights about key prospects most of us don’t get much detail on as yet.
Looking forward to getting out and seeing firsthand what Garrett and Martinez look like at Rancho Kook next year.

Glad you enjoyed them

If you guys have any follow up questions, I’d be happy to follow up. I’ll say this…when milb rosters were released I started hand picking the best rosters in the minors to go see and Cedar Rapids stuck out. I wasn’t disappointed. Most loaded roster I’ve seen in quite some time.

It was very close between these guys who I liked better. Richards is the one not getting the best out of his ability yet. He should be much, much more effective. Martinez is on the developmental path I’d expect him to be on. It’s so rare though to see two arms in a minor league rotation of this caliber, so I’d be pretty excited as a fan.

Then of course Trout, and I like Segura and Grichuk but they require a little more work. Trout’s one of the advanced HS drafted players I’ve seen.

How does one become a scout?

Also, could Trout potentially handle a higher level of play right now, like advanced A or AA?

Have you seen Tyler Skaggs throw yet? Does he compare to Richards and Martinez?

...

Really has a lot to do with knowing the right people to get your foot in the door. Obviously you have to know your stuff but getting the foot in is the challenge. I like Skaggs but much more of a projection case. The present stuff isn’t close to those guys. Trout could handle Hi-A right now I believe.

Grichuk

What did the Angels see in him (aside from raw power) that caused them to draft him ahead of Trout and in the first round? Do they just trust their ability to develop him into a hitter with plate discipline and make him a usable outfielder, or were they just smitten by his yoke-ability?

by Sethy on May 9, 2010 7:43 AM PDT up reply actions

It's my theory that they knew they were going to draft Trout and Grichuk

With Trout clearly being the better player. Why not draft Grichuk first, his signing demands would be less and it would also help drive down the price of Trout.

For example, we draft Grichuk before Trout, sign him and then say to Trout, “Well hey, this guy we drafted before you, we signed for this much, so we’re offering you this”.

It didn’t really turn out like that, I think they signed for right around the same. But just in case they didn’t, I think the Angels made the right move. If it’s the same team, what’s the difference in being selected 24th or 25th?

Trout, Grichuk...

Their reports will be up this week. Also will have notes on Segura and others.

As far as Trout, I think he’s just that advanced. If he’s not a northeast guy and had more exposure, he’s a top 10 talent.
