USA v Algeria
A match this morning will determine whether our country continues playing in the World Cup. Invest some time if you have it, to watch a little of the game this morning. I think USA wins, 2-1.
Ersty Berserker was a favorite of mine. The Halos should wear the 80's uni's more often. The movie Strange Wilderness made me laugh recently. It's a terrible movie. Yeswecan will push all his chips in with A-Q.

This is Halos Heaven, not Ties Are Awesome. Topics are supposed to stick to the Angels. Why don’t you go to a soccer blog to talk about soccer? If we all posted about whatever we felt like, or are excited about, we’d have to weed through zillions of subject lines about people’s babies, who’s going to win Idol this season, and eww SOCCER. It’s only fair.

by TheAngelsColts on Jun 23, 2010 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions
Thats my point, although I wasn't as clear...
If the league out here (MLS) drew 50k a game and had the incredible atmosphere that they have over in Euro/SA premiere leagues, I’d go because of the “event”.
Of course if you had that many people in attendence, we could pay the best players in the world, etc. etc.
Rest assured that if the Japanese or Korean baseball leagues were suddenly paying 50% more per position than in the US, you’d suddenly see some of the top names consider it if not outright jump into it. And as more did it, more would follow.
But I don’t know how soccer in the US will ever get there because we simply have TOO many sporting options with too much history for soccer to take root.
Then again though, I heard in the late 60’s (or was it 70’s), the Cosmos would sell out arenas because they had the best players in the world at the time. Not sure how accurate that is but it’s what I’ve heard/read.
Here is how it happens:
With each succeeding generation, a greater percentage of parents are raised playing competitive soccer in their youth. For them, resistance to the sport is zero and enthusiasm for soccer rises. And they beget children, and those children continue the upward spiral. Immigrant waves accelerate this trend.
Out of this, a greater percentage of youth athletes spend their formulative years developing soccer skills at the expense of baseball/basketball/american football skills. Out of those, more and more world class athletes will pop up. And they won’t ever be shortstops or wide receivers or point guards. They don’t have the years of muscle memory. They don’t have the hudreds and thousands of hours of instruction. And the preceding generations will follow these world class soccer athletes with interest.
So it won’t take the popularity arc of the current dominant sports. It will, instead, be dragged along by the tide of global interest.
In some sense, it may already be happening. American football and baseball are already struggling to maintain a movement among grade school athletes. A few years ago Sports Illustrated did a full layout on the deterioration of Texas high school football participation. And MLB is only recently taking up the challenge of driving their sport back into the inner cities to re-recruit young athletes. Track and field has nearly evaporated. Boxing is dead. Basketball is holding on strong. But youth soccer, well, that is booming.
"Wastin away again in Minor-Leaguer-Ville..."
As opposed to, what, stickball? Wadded up masking tape and a broken broom handle?
Gimme those things and a driveway and I can make a baseball game.
I spent unimaginable numbers of hours as a kid playing sports on the same budget. American football has the exact same overhead when you are 12. A field and some shirts to mark the boundaries will set you up at zero cost for lots of sports. If the ball is round you got soccer, but if the ball is obloid you got football. If it’s an old baseball you got Over The Line. If all I own is a basketball there are pickup games at courts already built and paid for, everywhere.
"Wastin away again in Minor-Leaguer-Ville..."
Yeah but we heard this all before after the women won...
…and that last about 9.26 days before people couldn’t even spell socker any more.
If you are looking for instant gratification, prepare for disappointment.
As I wrote, the popularity arc is spanning generations. A lot of girls who were participants in youth soccer at that time became rabid fans as a result of that result. Those women will remember their youth soccer experience when it comes time for them to choose a sport for their offspring.
The bump for each current event comes 20 years down the road, then another 20 years, then another, etc. NASL was one such event. Hosting the Men’s WC was another, as was winning the WWC, etc.
It’s safe to remain condescending because you and I won’t see this in our lifetimes, but the momentum is real and, so far, appears to be inevitable.
"Wastin away again in Minor-Leaguer-Ville..."
Yeah I get what you're saying, and intellectually it makes sense...
…but the landscape has changed. Instant gratification IS what society is about now.
News is meaningless 3 hours later because information (visual, audio, etc.) is available seconds after it happens and is a key-click away.
And that goes for entertainment/sports as well.
So I don’t think these cycles will apply any more, at least not in the historical sense.
As someone mentioned, do you think boxing or horse racing will ever be big again? Never. ever. ever.
You are not constrained to watching 3 channels on TV that everyone sees, whether you like it or not.
People have more choices now than they have time in the day to spend on.
BTW, with respect to "whether you like it or not"
I didn’t mean whether YOU like it or not (it came off as preachy) but I meant whether the viewer liked it or not.
You used to be stuck with the big 3 – ABC, CBS, NBC. When a boxing match was put on, everyone watched it because…what else were you going to do?
Play Xbox? Surf pr0n? Chat on twitter?
You pretty much could re-build your latest lego creation, ride your BMX bike (ahh the days), or play football in the cul-de-sac.
Now you see NFL, MLB, and NBA #1, 2, and 3 in that order because once people were given the viewing options and the respective sports had the ability to easily…and consistently…market to the fans, the best rose to the top.
Soccer might overtake hockey one day in this country simply because the NHL can’t manage tying their skates to save their lives, and our country has SO many immigrants that it could overtake hawkey.
Meanwhile, the growth in so much variety of programming has GROWN markets.
Take, for but one example, documentaries. Back when all the keys were held by a few decision makers there was not much space for documentaries. Now we have 18 hours a day on each of Discovery Channel, Discovery Health, History Channel, History International, TLC, Nat Geo, Science Channel, etc.
If you are in the business of creating documentaries, the breakdown of The Big Three is the best thing that ever happened to your ability to put food on your table. Your industry is thriving.
"Wastin away again in Minor-Leaguer-Ville..."
Our era of instant gratification does not preclude macro trending.
"Wastin away again in Minor-Leaguer-Ville..."
I agree with some of this, but soccer won't ever be tops in the US
It will stick around with a decent enough following though. I agree with you about the generational thing, considering that my generation is the one that saw the rise of youth soccer leagues to go along with little league baseball and peewee football. A fair amount of people in their 20’s like me either played it growing up or are used to it being around.
Soccer simply doesn’t have the cultural and historical connection here in the US that MLB, the NFL and the NBA have. Even the NHL has more of a connection, although I do think soccer could eventually overtake it. Soccer will remain in the US, kids will continue to play it, and it could become the 4th or 5th sport in America, but it won’t crack the top 3.

I agree that it may never be #1, but that is not what I am suggesting.
I am suggesting that it will become a viable, sustainable, major sporting interest and not remain the niche peculiarity with an occasional moment in the limelight that it is now.
I would be so bold, however, to up the ante in my prediction and claim that someday it will hold a spot among the top 3. I think basketball is going to collapse back to the doldrums that it suffered in the 70’s, and it may never climb back out.
"Wastin away again in Minor-Leaguer-Ville..."
What makes you say that?
Admittedly I’m not much of a basketball fan at all, but it seems quite popular around the nation at both the pro and college levels from what I can tell. I’ve lived in a city without an NBA team for the last four years and it’s easy to tell when March Madness and the NBA Playoffs are drawing near or in progress.
By contrast I see a small niche of people who might follow an EPL team or another European soccer team, but I’m not sure I know one person who really follows MLS. Obviously that’s likely to change at some point, but I don’t know about surpassing the NBA in the 3rd spot.
I’m curious why you think basketball is on the decline?

The difference is...
…people can identify with the NBA (though I’m not one of them) because they can watch their favorite players go from high school to college to the pro’s. Same with the MLB.
And this is ESPECIALLY true with the NFL. Not only does the NFL arguable have the greatest product (per unit of consumption) but also it is pretty much all-American still. Very few foreign athletes.
So with the NFL, you can identify with almost the entire league. We all loved Vladdy but it would have been nice to watch him come up through the ranks…or…speak some English. So while we identified with him because he was our player, it was still difficult.
With soccer, where are you watching these players develop before they “make it”? And I mean the average fan, not some soccer nut.
And then there is part 2 to this which is what determines a great player and when did they “make it”? The MLB, NFL, and NBA provide a consolidated, focused competition for the greatest players on earth – period.
With Soccer, that happens all over the globe depending on who you ask, and hence the need a tourney like the WC every 4 years.
So there are many challenges for soccer to overtake any of the big 4 ever here in the US but as I said earlier, the NHL is trying to make it easy :P
Well, a few reasons.
First, I saw this happen in the 70’s so I know that it is possible. I know that this is not an impossible thing.
Second, IMHO, I believe that David Stern made a deal with the devil in the late 80’s and early 90’s, by glorifying Michael Jordan and changing the NBA into a celebrity-based enterprise. With the retirement of Bird/Jordan and the end of that era, Stern had to fend off the less intersting defensive-minded game that the NBA was turning into via the Detroit Pistons “Bad Boy” success. Jordan was the hook to hang the league on. I personally don’t believe that Jordan was anything greater than Elgin Baylor or Julius Erving or even Dominique Wilkens, but the league seemed to change in terms of infractions called in order to liberate athleticism and make the night ESPN hilight reels.
This, I believe, is a tactical win but a strategic defeat. Now the NBA requires a phenomenal athlete to sustain such a promotion mill. After Jordan there has been Kobe. Now LeBron. But in between Jordan and Kobe you got a hint of troubles to come when the league was stuck with Iverson and advertising/ticket sales struggled among the white collar set.
The quality of actual play throughout hte NBA continues to deteriorate. Outside shooting percentages are falling off as the newer generation of players were raised to “be like Mike”, which meant ESPN highlight dunk fests. Jordan hitting a 2-point jumper is not a very sexy video clip.
The massive wrestling that goes on all over the court with every possession has handed over enormous power to the officials, as they can choose what to call or not call, when, and why. We are well past the point where the losing side in any critical game brings up some officiating disparity. And the whole Tim Donaghy episode raises the spectre that this is not an abberation.
So, as I see it, the NBA is heading full steam ahead in the midst of an ice field. There are far too many chances for this to all crash into an iceberg over the next decade, wherein Stern will grab the last lifeboat and climb overboard and “retire” before the whole thing sinks and he goes down with it.
We will be back at the 70’s again, but with a product that is far worse upon which to rebuild. And something will have a chance to sneak in and take over as the #3.
