If an Angel did what Zambrano did, would you...
...be against him or support him?
If you've not seen/read about it, you can find it here.
The last incident like this the Angels really had was Jose Guillen. The difference, of course, was:
1) His outburst was against management, not other players
2) He was an everyday player and was one our best hitters
That said, most fans had a hard time accepting it because he was hitting well but were ok with the idea that he was gone. If his outburst was against players rather than management, would most of you had still been ok with him being traded? Lackey also had his share of outbursts of varying degrees but I think because he was our ace, we accepted it at the time.
I know Zambrano has a history of outbursts... He also isn't having the best season and is relegated to the pen instead of starting, so it's easy to throw him aside (indefinite suspension).
The guy is a total arse, but emotions aside, I think if his teammates are willing to accept an appology and his explanation for why he was upset, then let the firecracker back on the field.

I was absolutely for dumping Guillen.
And would do the same for Zambrano, however I think the Cubbies have a few more dollars invested in Big Zoloft than the Angels had in Crazy Jose.

Ummm...yeah
In round numbers, Zambrano makes $18M this year and $36M over the next two seasons, with a $19M player vesting option for 2013, which means the Cubs could conceivably be on the hook for $45M after this nightmare season ends.
It is tough to choose among this deal, Milton Bradley’s and Alphonso Soriano’s as the worst of the Hendry era. Never complain about Reagins before you look at the decisions made by GMs of other teams.

Yes, but...
In all fairness to JP Ricciardi, he had to overpay to get quality players to stay in Toronto. At the time of the Wells signing, the Canadian $ was worth about 75% of the US $, and he was betting that Wells would continue to develop into a monster player. I think he underestimated the effect playing on that artificial field has on the long-term viability of the players. I think you can make the same argument about the Alex Rios deal.
I don’t think Hendry has to pay a premium to get players interested in playing in the third biggest media market in the US, on the field of one of the oldest and most storied ballparks in the game.

I get that
still, though.
He gave $126 million to a man who, at the time, had a career .828 OPS (112 OPS+). He was coming off a great season to be sure (in 2006), but he was nothing if not inconsistent in the years prior, and even if he was going to continue to develop (and going into his age 28 season, you had to know whatever prime there was left wasn’t going to be terribly long), the probability of him being worth anything near that mark was remote.
Same thing with Rios. He paid for the talent that COULD be there, rather than the production that already was. Then add in mistakes like the Burnett opt-out clause, The B.J. Ryan and Frank Thomas signings, and probably some other shit I’m forgetting and…well, yikes.
Though to be fair, Wells has torn it up so far early in the season, and he’ll be worth the money for at least ONE year if he can continue this pace. And my late round fantasy gamble on him is all the sweeter for it right now.

The BJ Ryan signing never made sense, I’ll grant you that. It wasn’t about overpaying a player to entice him to come play in Toronto, it was about giving a contract to a player who was never that special to begin with.
Frank Thomas was a roll of the dice that the guy who revitalized his career in Oakland still had plenty in the tank; the Burnett deal was a misstep, though we don’t know if the opt-out was the only way the deal would get signed by the player. Burnett lives in MD and his wife won’t fly, so it may well have been a condition of signing with Toronto that he be allowed the option to walk after two seasons (his wife received 8 round-trip limo rides from MD to Toronto per season as part of his Blue Jays deal).

Lackey's outbursts <<<<<<<<<<<<<Zambrano Outboursts.
Hell, Zambrano’s are beyond epic and almost seem like theatrical productions.
Alright Brandon, you're free..........and we're waiting.
Def agree.
Lackey’s a big baby…Zambrano’s a prize-winning moron.

What a joke
Saunders would never throw a tantrum over anything. Weaver would and probably has in the clubhouse from the way we have seen him react to some players on the field while he is pitching.
I'm not as bad as all of you.
Didn't Weaver beat up a toilet?

I did that once.
Eating chicken burritos bought from a guy selling them out of the back of a truck was a bad idea.

Haha yeah....
…I knew using Zambrano to make a point was risky at best because it’s near impossible to defend him.
I think as someone mentioned above, and instead of using Saunders as an example (I used him because of his similar era/w-l record if he had say two more losses), Lackey would have been better.
I just didn’t want to use Lackey because once he left, he went from being one of the most popular players to one of the most hated, so it’s easy for people to say “of course I would have suspended him!”
So far though, it seems Zambrano has the fan support so far on this one from reading many of the message boards.
Where do you get this?
Go over to Bleed Cubbie Blue. They overwhelmingly want his fat ass out of their ASAP. I’m one of them.

Yeah I noticed that it has changed...
I was just monitoring MLB general on ESPN and was reading the initial comments on Chicago Tribune, etc.
It seemed the most passionate fans voiced their opinions first, but the general opinion doesn’t seem to be quite the same.
from what I saw he yelled at some players to dive for balls and then knocked over the gatoraid cups
pretty jerky but not the end of the world.

He's not in the bullpen anymore
he’s back in the rotation…even pitched for the Cubs in their win against us a few days ago. And since his move back, he’s actually be all right…2-2 with a 3.63 ERA.
But yeah, he’s a nutcase asshole.

Zambrano.....
…. has a history of this. He beat up his catcher in the dugout a few years ago, he destroys coolers and fountains, throws tantrums on the mound, and routinely breaks bats over his knee. Derrek Lee finally told him to STFU in the dugout. He’s been suspended indefinitely. ESPN has been running a montage of his worst moments. The Cubs will take a warm bucket of spit and a corked bat to be named later. You guys want him?

We can talk about the corked bat, but I'm not interested in dumping out the spitoon.

I'd give him a hug.
I am fan various years ago.
yes, we can’t let people get away with that in our clubhouse now or ever… otherwise we’d end up being like Florida, CWS, Cubbies
If we’ve learned anything from the Giants, BoSox, or any other team with a milton bradley, the best thing to do is cut ur losses, and maintain order in the dugout at all costs even if it means ur trading Manny ramirez
