Question About Scoring a Game
This question popped into my head while watching the Celebrity and Legends Softball Game last night.
Can a pitcher get a win and a save in the same game?
Let's say Jered Weaver starts a game and pitches the first 7 innings of a game. During those 7 innings, the Angels take a 3 - 0 lead. In the 8th inning the opposing team has 3 left handed hitters that will not get pinch hit for. Scioscia brings in Fuentes to face them. But Weaver has pitched so well, he puts Weaver out in Left Field for the 8th inning. Fuentes get throught the 8th inning 1, 2, 3. Scioscia then reinserts Weaver back as pitcher for the 9th inning, which he gets through and seals the win for the Angels.
I know Weaver is allowed to pitch again as long as he doen't leave the game. I remember Davey Johnson doing this with the Mets in '86 against the Astros with Roger McDowell and Jesse Orosco during the NLCS.
Does he get credit for both the win and the save? Or only for the win.

No....Rule 10.19 in the MLB Rulebook
10.19 Saves For Relief Pitchers
A save is a statistic credited to a relief pitcher, as set forth in this Rule 10.19.
The official scorer shall credit a pitcher with a save when such pitcher meets all four of the following conditions:
(a) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team;
(b) He is not the winning pitcher;
© He is credited with at least a third of an inning pitched; and
(d) He satisfies one of the following conditions:
(1) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning;
(2) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batters he faces); or
(3) He pitches for at least three innings.
Thanks for the info
I didn’t think someone could get both, but I wasn’t sure.
We're putting the band back togehter.
WoW
the third rule has a copyright. Was it okay to post on this site? Don’t want the Rev to get no C&D letter, ya know whattai mean?

I just wanted to say, "Good Luck. We're all counting on you".

"Fuentes gets through the 8th inning 1, 2, 3"
Made me chuckle. (Although, to his credit, he has done exactly that a few times recently.)
WHEN has he gone 1,2,3 in an EIGHTH inning?
I love this team.

I think the double switch is a National League only rule
So that scenario can only happen during interleague games in an NL park
nope Pitcher can go play any position he'd like and then reenter as pitcher
of course Soth would never do it because he’s not a matchup guy but a role guy.
April 3rd, 2008 Pittsburgh @ Atlanta
Roger and I saw Braves manager Bobby Cox pull off this stunt in Atlanta early in 2008. Chris Resop played left field for one batter between two stints on the mound in the top of the tenth inning. The Pirates won this game 4-3. A pitcher can play defense anywhere on the field in both the A.L. and N.L.
