Saxon: Angels in on KC's Alberto Callaspo

ESPNLA is reporting that since the Angels recognize they don't have the tools necessary to get an "impact bat" like Adam Dunn, they have instead put their sites on 27 year old Kansas City Royals 3B Alberto Callaspo, a one time Angel farmhand (traded for Jason Bulger in '06).

Star-divide

Thoughts? the guys batting .276 with 8 HRs, 42 RBI and a OBP of .310.

Its definitely an upgrade to our current 3B - - though I do love me some Frandsen - - but apparently we've already been turned down for Sully plus a mid-level prospect.

More here. What say you, HH readers? like it? hate it? What makes this happen?

Isnt a flashy name, but its a clear upgrade

a .280 hitter who is on pace for about 15HR and 80ish RBI is exactly what we need right now for cheap.

I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

I am not sure this is an upgrade offensively.

44fan claims that it is a fact Vlad will get hurt. Here is to your "borrowed time" Vlad. You were, are, and will be the man Vlad.

This isn't a confidence-inspiring move...

…especially since KC passed on the offer of SOS and “other minor league scrub”. Embarrassing.

by sothball on Jul 20, 2010 3:27 PM PDT reply actions

Lets put it this way

Most of us would assume that a solid year from Wood would bring us closer to contention. Say he batted .250 with 18 HR and 75 RBI with almost no walks and solid D.

Well thats pretty much exactly what Callaspo would represent.

I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

According to fangraphs

He’s been good this year and in 2008 but he was awful in 2009.

Not the worst idea I’ve heard, but he’s still not a relief pitcher.

The Angels would certainly be upgrading on the cheap at 3B (assuming the angels player(s) in the deal are fair value). But, without upgrading the bullpen in addition to this, the Angels still stand to get outscored for the remainder of the season.

Deal

I wouldn’t mind going for Callaspo and DeJesus in a deal.

by tkemp on Jul 22, 2010 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions

In the minor leagues, writers/scouts went ape-shit over the Aybar/Callaspo combo around 2B.

For some reason unknown to Angels’ fans, they were split up in 2003 when Callaspo was promoted to A- Cedar Rapids, and switched from his normal 2B position, to play SS.

What I remember about Callaspo had zero to do with anything regarding bad defense. Actually, the fact that he was shifted ahead of Aybar to play SS seemed to intensify his defensive credentials, if anything. The one thing I remember about his development at the time is the fact that he was slow afoot. I can remember nothing negative about his defense at SS………or 2B (his natural position), for that matter.

I thought Callaspo was destined to be an impressive Angel for a long time. Obviously, in 2006 he was traded for Jason Bulger; the move seemed to make sense when I researched Bulger’s credentials. After some time with Arizona, Callaspo was traded to Kansas City. Stories emerged about spousal abuse; speculation arose that social problems might have been one of the reasons the Angels let such a talent get away. I suspect that that, plus the precosious superstar premonitions of Howie Kendrick made him expendable for a needed, talented bullpen arm Jason Bulger.

The absolute fact remains that Callaspo has been the most successful (so far) of the plethera of middle infield talents that the Angels possessed just a few short years ago: More so than Alexi Casilla (traded for JCRomero), Sean Rodriguez (traded for SKazmir), and currently our own Brandon Wood.

I don't like this

It’s not so much an impact player as it is a more-of-the-same-type bandage. KInd of like a symbolic “ See?!? We’re doing something!!!!!” Let’s hope the bandage is just what we need!

Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.

by Clutch on Jul 20, 2010 6:59 PM PDT reply actions

I don't see the upgrade

He’s OK, but Maicer is better, and Frandsen is just as good. Callaspo has done an OK job on defense at 3rd, last year he was below average at 2B. He just doesn’t have enough speed to play in the middle of the field, but his hands and arm are good enough for 3rd.

The timing makes no sense. I could see this move a month ago when Izturis got hurt. Now we’ve got 66 games to fill the 3B spot. I think Izzy can give us 40 and Frandsen covers the rest, plus once a week check in and see if Brandon Wood has stopped sucking.

With O’Sullivan’s win over the MFYs, I’d think the offer would be off the table now. Let’s see more of big Sean, and it wouldn’t bother me if I never saw Kazmir pitch in an Angel uniform again.

by RallyMonkey5 on Jul 20, 2010 7:55 PM PDT reply actions

I like this

He gives us a solid bat with some pop, and decent defense. If we could keep him next year, he could be platooned with Izzy. Frankly, I don’t think Frandsen is going to last a whole lot with the Angels. And don’t I remember a time when Callaspo hit 30+ homers in a season?

by nicolasville on Jul 20, 2010 8:36 PM PDT reply actions

Only if you were smoking hash in Tunis.

Callaspo has a career OPS of .740 and has never hit more than 11 HRs in a season. His best season was last year, and his slash line was nearly identical to Maicer Izturis’. In fact, the two are so similar that Baseball Reference indicates they are historical comps.

Callaspo is a healthier Izturis with more inconsistent defense. The Angels gain nothing in this trade, and just further deplete their farm for a 66 game rental that’s struggling to get on base at a .310 obp clip.

That Reagins is even considering this trade just lends more evidence to my suspicion that he’s making this up as he’s going along. He’s deeply confused about the strengths and weaknesses of this team.

Well, who says this deal is even happening?

1. This was reported by ESPN, those guys are freakin’ clueless regarding the Angels.
2. Mark Saxon is an idiot.
3. Consider the primary source, it’s not stated. Sounds like idiots making stuff up.

Should this deal go down (O’Sullivan + Moore?) you gotta figure Brandon Wood and Kevin Frandsen are done. Izzy means more to this offense than I care to admit most of the time. I mean he drives in runs, he gets into scoring position and scores runs, he plays terrific defense. The fact is, we got a better chance at winning with Izzy than Franny or Wood, bt we all know Izy can’t stay in the lineup everyday. So if we landed Callaspo I’d expect the following time share:

Per 10 games.
Second Base: Kendrick 7, Izzy 3.
Shortstop: Aybar 8, Izzy 2
Third Base: Callaspo 7, Izzy 3.

If Wood had any value left, I’d expect to see him packaged with Bobby Wilson in the offseason, perhaps for a pitcher.

We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.

by Halowood on Jul 20, 2010 9:22 PM PDT reply actions

Why is Frandsen "done"?

He leads the team in batting average, is hitting .333 over the past week, gets on base at a respectable clip, and has done it over 140 plate appearances now, so it’s less fluky. He delivered a crucial RBI double in a one run victory in the Seattle series over the weekend.

There’s nothing wrong with Kevin Frandsen on this team right now, and a platoon of Frandsen and Izturis at 3B would be just fine.

by Turks Teeth on Jul 21, 2010 4:15 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

At the very least

Frandsen should be our utility infielder for the next 3-4 years. Dude can play.

by RallyMonkey5 on Jul 21, 2010 6:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh I agree, I only think Callaspo's arrival would signal Franny's demise, no room.

Until Maicer gets hurt. Which esentially makes Frandsen our new Freddy Sandoval.

We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.

You're smoking crack.

Why on earth would we sit Kendrick 3 out of 10 games? Right now we can just as easily forget about Callaspo, play Izzy at 3B 7 out of 10, and let Frandsen and Wood divvy up 3 games.

I have noticed there has been no traction on this story since Saxon’s blog. Usually, there are secondary stories which independently mention the same prospective deal and thus provide some confirmation of action behind the scenes. I like to read the local newspapers for the other team to see if there is any mention from their end.

In this case, the only other mentions of any possible deal for Callaspo are references to Saxon’s ESPN blog. He appears to be the only one talking about this.

Agreed

Even the KC papers were mute on an impending deal up until it was about to be announced.

Saxon got this one. Blind squirrel or not, he was right on the story.

Put Callapso at first

play Maicer at 3B and put Napoli back behind the dish, that would give us a decent lineup.

this trade makes no sense if Callapso is playing 3B, he isn’t a big upgrade over Maicer, just a different kind of player.

Given the way Sulli pitched today, not sure I’d be willing to make this move. we have no SP depth in the minors, we kind of need Sulli. I’d probably pass.

I'd rather suffer a year off from the play-offs.

The Angels have made enough stupid decisions for one year. Let’s just see what happens with the guys we have, and regroup next year. We will either be pleasantly surprised to see these guys half-ass their to play-offs, or we will learn from our mistakes and sign better free agents this winter, plus call up some young guys.

Well here's a question that might give this thread new tread.....

If the rumor were true, and the Royals were interested in making the deal following SOS performance against the Yankees, would you do it? Who is more valuable to this team across the next 3 years, Alberto Callaspo or Sean O’Sullivan? If it’s just SOS and a fringe prospect, by all means I’d do it. Chances are SOS will never be anything more than a swing man or a spot starter.

We simply cannot assume Izzy will be healthy everyday. When he is, he MUST be in the lineup, he’s that good, but having Callaspo to share duties with Izzy at 3B and Howie at 2B would be extremely useful to this ball club.
