Angels acquire Dan Haren for Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin, Rafael Rodriguez, and Tyler Skaggs

As a Diamondbacks baseball fan, I'm just glad he didn't go to the Yanks. The broadcast of today's Dbacks/Giants game broke the news. Here's MLBTR's report:

Star-divide

The Angels have acquired Dan Haren from Arizona, according to Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News (via Twitter).  Arizona will receive Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin, Rafael Rodriguez, and a player to be named later in return.

It was first reported by Bill Plunkett and Dan Woike of the Orange County Register that Saunders was involved in a trade.

Hopefully he can be the guy that gives the final push to get you guys to/through the playoffs. When he's in his zone, he can be one of the best pitchers in the game (see: first half 2009).

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

everyone?

Just kaplan and chuckles.

I love this team.

by Downing Rules on Jul 26, 2010 2:42 AM PDT up reply actions

And in my case

I was responding to Dipoto’s statement about what it would require for the a team to acquire Haren: Two starting arms and a relief pitcher, with the implication being “MLB-ready” or a current player.

Saunders fits that bill, but Corbin and (presumably) Skaggs are years away, and Raffi Rodriguez isn’t the sort of impact player Dipoto was describing, even though he is technically “MLB-ready”.

If you look at his standards as announced, it would have appeared to be Santana (not Saunders), Jepsen (not Rodriguez) and a AAA starter (not Corbin or Skaggs). I was stunned when I read the news bulletin because the players given up were far lower in overall quality than he had indicated earlier. Saunders is a nice pitcher but he’s a #3 going for a #1. Rodriguez might flourish in Arizona (assuming the state will let him in), but I never saw the stuff of a MLB player when he played for the Angels. Corbin and Skaggs might both turn out to be huge finds for the Dbacks, but neither figures to see the big leagues until 2012 at the earliest.

I don’t know if Diposto is that bad or Reagins is that good, but the players the Angels gave up are much less overall than the Dbacks had claimed would be required just a few days ago.

Possible mitigating circumstance: The Angels might have been the only team inquiring, since very few teams could take on Haren’s salary, much as with Kazmir. If the Yankees didn’t come to the dance (as has been rumored), then the Angels might have been the only trading partner the Dbacks had. I would have expected the Phillies and Mets to be in that mix, though.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

If this was a rental

it was foolish unless we upgrade the bullpen and the offense too. Dan Haren alone isn’t going to turn us into winners this year.

If this was for multiple years it might be a good thing.

Yes I agree. I initially thought he was a half season rental.

I can't believe it at the moment

I’m expecting the PTBNL to be someone relatively good but we don’t need Corbin or Rodriguez.

And Haren is a significant upgrade on Joe Saunders.

It’s what we said we needed when we get to the playoffs, having top notch guys to match up with the Yanks etc

But not Trout. According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

by Nashdiesel on Jul 25, 2010 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

I'd be surprised if Conger

Since they have Miguel Montero. Who is “outstanding” but not Trout?

Off the top of my head it could be Richards, Martinez-Mesa (AZ needs pitching, could be an all pitching deal), Amarista, Conger, Segura, or Bourjos. Is Reckling still a top prospect? Horrible at AAA but has pitched well since the demotion to AA and he’s still young for that level.

I could hope that they’d consider Brandon Wood. For him to play alongside Mark Reynolds might be the best, and only, option to salvage his career.

"That boy is our last hope" - Obi Wan Scioscia, as Francisco Rodriguez left for the Mets. "No, there is another" - Yoda Reagins.

But with a K/9 ratio of 9.00, an xFIP of 3.38 and consistent velocity over the last three years, the ovrerall numbers actually look okay. I hope the scouting reports confirm that his stuff is still as good as ever.

His ERA is high due to...

a career high BABIP rate and HR/FB rate. Basically a few more hits have fallen this year and he has suffered from homre run-itis.

There has been no noticable drop in velocity like Kazmir or in breaking ball usage like Kazmir. Likewise he hasn’t suffered any injuries this year (I don’t think). His BB rate and K rate are still excellent.

Give Reagins Some Credit

Nobody complained back in December when injury-prone Vlad was replaced by WS MVP Matsui. Only now that Vlad is healthy and putting up big numbers in the most hitter-friendly park in the AL do Angel fans complain. HINDSIGHT! Now, let’s look at the positive..we let Chone “every other year is a good year” Figgins go, and now we acquire a good player and great pitcher who won’t be FA’s for a long time. The jury is still out on the decisions on letting Lackey and Oliver go (although I’m confident we won’t regret it). Yes, the Kazmir move isn’t looking good right now, but, again, remember how well Kaz pitched last September. I still think he can get back to that…maybe.
Overall, Reagins is doing a good job and deserves to be acknowledged. I especially like that he got a great pitcher who is NOT a rental. Next year, we’ll have Haren and the Rangers won’t have Lee. ‘Nuff said! And there’s still some hope for this year.

Let me start this with a prayer that this situation doesn’t play out.
Dan Haren is locked up until 2013 with the option on the last year. Anybody else see that this is our management getting an ace for when weaver leaves in a few years. Preparing to have leverage against Boras. This is what we thought we were doing with the Kazmir trade because Lackey was all but gone. Just a thought.
But I think we will lock up Weaver long term in the next two years.

Other than maybe Richards, I honestly don’t see our other arms at Top rotation guys

by HaloFanInDC on Jul 25, 2010 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

He does have top of the rotation projection

But it does rest on development in his curve and additional velocity to his fastball.

I can live with it, as we have Richards, Mesa, Bedrosian and the AA boys Reckling and Chatwood.

by TheQuestforMerlin on Jul 25, 2010 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I've been down on Mesa, Chatwood and Reckling b/c of their control issues

I think that is really going to hold them back

Plus Bedrosian could start, but a lot of scouts have talked about him more as a power-reliever.

by HaloFanInDC on Jul 25, 2010 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

True

Bedrosian will start at first. We were really high on him. And he’s 18 as well, so he will follow the Skaggs development curve.

by TheQuestforMerlin on Jul 25, 2010 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

But I think Corbin and Skaggs are arguably the best arms right now.

If I were another club looking to poach talent, those would be the first two I would pick as well.

by Turks Teeth on Jul 25, 2010 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps, I sorta agree, I think they are safe/good picks for the D'Backs

I think they have shown the best control, Skaggs on a limited pitch/inning count though (which should be expected as he doesn’t have to go through lineups as often). Corbin has been an odd one, as he improved from the step up to A+.

However Richards and Mesa have been scouted to have the better stuff. And similar to Chatwood and Reckling need to sort out their control.

It’s a loss, but if one of the other four improve their control (probably with the exception of Reckling, whose stuff doesn’t wow everyone) in a meaningful way, their stuff would profile them as a better pitcher.

by TheQuestforMerlin on Jul 25, 2010 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I think there are a lot of prospects with good "stuff".

I like to see to control, diversity of arsenal, and composure — all of which those two have.

I’m optimistic about any prospect with K/9 of 9 or better, and a BB/9 under 3. Corbin and Skaggs have both delivered that this year.

Again, I think it’s a fair trade. But it’s a lot to give up, no question. Our system was really depleted before the very good 2009 draft, and early returns on the 2010 draft aren’t looking great.

by Turks Teeth on Jul 25, 2010 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

the 2010 draft is looking like a train wreck.

Lindsey and Bolden were huge overdrafts. Scouts didn’t even think Lindsey had the tools to be anywhere near the 1st round. Bolden is striking out in more than half his abs.

Clarke has been switch-hitting since he was like 13 I’ve read but scouts still talk about how his hitting is poor. At least he has tools.

Bedrock’s son so far isn’t doing well, and I know it’s small sample size, but man he’s getting lit up.

Then our top draft pick hasn’t even signed. And neither has the lefty from Oregon or Oregon State who can tough 97.

To begin with, it wasn’t as if Saunders’ name had been dangled as trade bait for weeks. I think we were all startled that his name was the one in the trade, and we weren’t going to be going anywhere. He must have been stunned.

Then consider that several of the players on the team are guys he came up through the minors with (Aybar, Kendrick, Morales, etc) and you have some daily friendships which will be lost (or compromised). The guys in the clubhouse crew, the trainers, everybody connected with the team are folks Saunders has been working with his entire professional career.

It makes sense that he’d be emotional. In fact, it is right.

That's prety cold.

Some carry the idea that loyalty is greater than $. I know…that’s foolish in professional sports. It appeared to me he did about the best he could with his ability.
I like the trade, AND salute the (apparent) fact he was emotionally affected by the trade.

Perfectly understandable emotion.

The Angels are a fantastic organization, have enjoyed great success while Joe was with the team, and the players are a good group of guys. Now, had he been traded away from the Mariners, he’d probably have been doing cartwheels and his enthusiasm would have been off the charts.

There has been no noticable drop in velocity like Kazmir or in breaking ball usage like Kazmir. Likewise he hasn’t suffered any injuries this year (I don’t think). His BB rate and K rate are still excellent."

They're looking to dump salary

Taking on Kaz would eliminate that. Plus Kaz is on the DL so they couldn’t trade him.

It’s already been mentioned that Trout isn’t going to be involved and I doubt Kohn is going to be a “Top prospect”

Conger and Bourjos are possibilities, but if they wanted a catcher, I don’t see why they didn’t go out and trade with the Yankees for Montero. As for Bourjos, the D-backs don’t seem to be hurting in the OF as much with Young and Upton, so i’d also doubt it’d be him

Checking in for the 1st time this season:

I’ve got tix to Wednesday’s game – where I presume Haren will slot into Hokie Joe’s spovt vs. Beckett. My excitement level just went up like 52%

The 1 (and only) Angels game I got to cover was a preseason game this year vs. San Diego where Joe pitched. He was a great guy to talk to and I felt bad as a fan to see him struggle this year.

I’m glad he had a quality start before taking off for Az. Via con Dios, Joe!

Nice pickup Reagins

I like the trade for Haren, a little concerned about who the PTBNL will be. To bad the Angels couldn’t have gotten him last year (Lackey, Weaver, Santana, Haren, Kazmir) against the Yankees in the ALCS, they would have beat them and probably won the World Series.

Still need some help in the pen, Scott Downs would be nice. Not sure even with the addition of Haren that the Angels can make the playoffs but who knows what other surprises Reagins has in store this week.

Weaver is an ace in the making (if he’s not quite there yet), Santana is one of the best #2 starters, Piniero has been pitching well and comes from a long line of great St. Louis pitchers, and while Kaz has lost his way, I’m hoping he can return to form somewhat and at least be #4 starter quality. This trade was a freaking STEAL! I don’t care who the PTBNL is, it’s not Trout, so this deal is amazing. If it’s for Tyler Skaggs, as a few preliminary reports are stating, we win. Hands down. This trade is basically Haren for Saunders and spare parts. Fantastic!

My dad worked with Dan Haren’s mom until he retired this year… She says he’s extremely excited to be staying on the West Coast, and he grew up a huge Angels fan, so he’s excited about that, too.

Reagins says he’s either starting Monday or Tuesday! This race just got really fun…

not to be a downer

but this doesn’t mean much if we don’t start freakin scoring runs, right? if our bullpen doesn’t keep blowing up. adding another arm like Haren is great but is this for next 2-3 years or was this trade to help us now? if we can’t score runs and hold leads, then what was the point making this deal now? crossing our fingers and hoping Matsui, Abreu, and Rivera start tearing up the ball and making up for the first 4 months of the season.

btw i love the deal, i really don’t care who the PTBNL is, as long as Haren is healthy we got ourselves another potential ace.

Pure comedy gold

You all must read the thread on LSB about the trade.

Basically, one gets the see the light bulb begin to glow, ever so dimly, above the heads of the participants as they realize:

° The Yankees weren’t in on Haren because they have their sights set of bidding for Lee in the offseason

° It is highly unlikely that the Rangers will be able to outbid the Yankees for Lee (or anyone else)

° That means the team gave up Smoak for a rental of Lee and an all-in attempt to get to the WS in 2010

° And unlike Lee, Haren isn’t a rental and he’ll be atop the rotation with Weaver in 2011 as well, even as Lee gets fitted for pinstripes

In between are the random notes of various posters whistling past the graveyard, convincing themselves that this doesn’t change anything (as if parting out Saunders for Haren in and of itself didn’t bode for an improved outcome for the Angels’ 2010 season).

It is great hilarity. Do yourself a favor and spend a few minutes scrolling through the thread.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

By my count, this puts next year's payroll around $130 mil plus change

Meaning we may be looking to shed salary this offseason instead of adding it. There are no real remaining holes on next year’s club – this deal takes care of that – but it doesn’t leave room for luxuries (read: Crawford).

by rghan on Jul 25, 2010 8:50 PM PDT reply actions

by Clutch on Jul 25, 2010 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Not that much for Rivera

Abreu for 2011 is $9M (plus $1M buyout for 2012), Rivera is $5.25M.

Honestly, I think Rivera would prefer to be paid as much as folks seem to believe is is being paid.

That said, my guess at this point is the team has decided to roll with Bourjos in 2011 instead of Crawford. Dan Haren just got the money which would otherwise have been spent on a FA ($41M over next three seasons if the option is picked up).

You know, Skaggs is really, really good

I don’t think it’s a question of Arizona overvaluing him. I was playing around with new rankings last week and he fell third, fourth, or fifth on every pass. Abe Flores talked about him in a totally different tone than he did with the other guys.

Also – seeing him live, on a game when he was on… well, he made a lot of 22 and 23 year olds look foolish. He was untouchable. If all goes well he’ll have 4 average to above average pitches.

Yeah

My wife hated the trade, she loves Saundo. I also liked Saundo a lot but this is not only an upgrade but a loud and clear message that the Angels are not conceding the season to Texas. Heck, we beat the Bosox two out of three and sweep Texas next weekend and we are right back in it. Go Angels!!!

Better chance of sweeping Boston than Texas, imho.

But, I like your enthusiasm. Let’s do this! GO HALOS!

I love this team.

Well, no doubt there will be some self-imposed and external pressure....

…on Haren tonight, but I think there will be even more on the offense.

They HAVE to provide some run support since they failed in 3 of 4 games in what was the most important series to date this year.

They can’t keep failing. I can’t even point at Oakland and make fun anymore as they might pass us. Thank gawd for Seattle.
