Dan Haren Injury Masks Angels Bigger Weaknesses

Final Score in Anaheim: Red Sox 6, Angels 3

Star-divide

Did I ever tell you the story about Mo Vaughn in 1999? On Opening Day, his first game as an Angel after signing a big offseason free agency contract, on the 2nd batter of the game, he sprained his ankle on the dugout steps fielding a foul ball.

Well tonight, Dan Haren made his Angels debut and partied like it was 1999 alright. Haren took a line drive off of his right wrist in the 5th inning and left the game without even throwing a pitch. He was diagnosed with a contusion although no X-Ray was taken. Haren will visit the Angels team doctor Lewis Yokum on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, even with world class starting pitching, the team's glaring holes in their offense, defense and relief pitching added up to an atrocious evening of baseball against the weakest Boston Red Sox team the Angels have faced in any of the past 12 years. Clay Buchholz tried his best to hand the game to the Angels but they refused to do anything more than the occasional single. Terry Francona tried to give the game away by putting some really washed up reliever and the Angels climbed aboard a 2-run HR by Hideki Matsui to complement their earlier solo HR by Bobby Abreu, but gutless grounding out by Howie Kendrick and Erick Ayabr and just about everyone else was laughably overshadowed by Fernando Rodney coughing up a bomb to David Ortiz when all the terribleness and misfortune of the contest seemed like it could be washed away.

Nothing else to say... Angels tied with Oakland, 7.5 games behind the Cocaine Cowboys. Biggest deficit of the season. We're just not that good, folks, but I doubt this is news to any of you...

Kohn

can we get the KOHNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!! fail yet? I was so pumped about this game, Kohn up, Haren starting… Watching with the brother in law from New Beanland…. I’m disheartened. Just hoping Haren dont miss no time now

I blame the three idiots who

Mostly Mathis because..

I'll bet Buchholz was pretty relaxed even as he was getting into that jam--

Because he knew he’d get right out of it because Black Hole Mathis was coming up.

Load bases, nobody out. Then

  • Popup to first

Of course, since the first two popups were Rivera and Mathis, I was expecting:

  • GIDP

part of our 95 collapse was the mariners winning a ton of games in a row

Do you really see us being able to pull off a 45-15 record the rest of the way? 40 and 20? The way this team is playnig right now 30-30 would be a stretch.

baseball gods = Bud Selig

It only makes sense that it’s all a conspiracy for the Rangers to be really good this year, seeing how the MLB is paying for the franchise atm, and the want to find a good owner who thinks they are buying a winning team.

That, and we have a pretty crappy, underachieving team this year..

1 degree of separation from Ms Tyler. My wife met her while she was filming That Thing You Do.

Liv was just standing around on the sidewalk on location in downtown Orange doing absolutely nothing and being totally ignored by 1000’s of passersby. My wife was there to meet Tom Hanks (she did), but accidentally struck up a long conversation with a very nice, very pretty, young lady. It wasn’t until later that my sons informed her of who that girl was.

GOOD NEWS: Haren can throw strikes! What a contrast to Kazmir. In the 2nd & 3rd innings, I think he threw 20-25 strikes to one ball.
BAD NEWS: He may have been too much around the zone. Plus he went and got blasted by that line drive off. He hasn’t even had a welcoming press conference yet!

GOOD NEWS: We got bases loaded with no outs!
BAD NEWS: The next 3 batters were Rivera, Mathis, and Aybar…

…Rivera…weak pop-up to 1B. Since Rivera had set such a high bar, Mathis decided he couldn’t exceed it and promptly did the same thing. Aybar followed with a weak pop-out to LF.

So, what Aybar got done is he hit a pop fly a little farther than riveramathis…

The only backfilling I can ponder...

…is out hopes for a 4th consecutive crown in 2010.

That backfill will be equal parts;
1) Wood’s hopes and dreams.
2) Kazmir’s shoulder
3) Morales’ broken leg.

Valley

This is just a dip. Sometimes you gotta have a mediocre season. Put it in perspective!

I think the Baseball Gods have spoken to us in bold capital letters.

And they’ve said, this isn’t our year.

When our best hitter breaks his leg hitting a game-winning grandslam, the writing was on the wall.

I've got nothing.

I'm not sure we know what they want, or if they care.

Last year, the gods (or God) tapped a young and promising starting pitcher on the shoulder and told him…it was his time to leave this good earth.
The earthbound Angels Baseball Club responded with a memorable season where they beat this same Sux team 3 straight in a 5 game ALDS series, including a highly improbable 9th inning rally in game 3.

I wouldn’t try to read too much further into what the baseball gods may or may not have said with Kendry’s injury…

Was the only one thinking "only the Angels"

When Haren took the ball to the forearm tonight?

There's no "I" in team...

and there is also no “I” in your message.

:)

I love this team.

It's official. . .

We have been Cursed In every way, shape, and form.

And I blame Juan Rivera’s epic piss-poor hustle for pissing off the BB gods. What a effin’ lop of shit.

If ain't nothing wrong, something just ain't right.

hahah i remember that mo vaughn injury. I was at that game, it was sooooo back breaking at the time. Little did we know that the mo vaughn we thought we signed was really on roids during at least part of his time while in Boston cough kinda like one former Bosox/ current Doyer, and former twin current beantowner

It seems like Haren will only miss one start if that, but it goes without saying that the fact one of our major coups in recent years gets injured almost instantly upon becoming an Angel

In Kobe we trust!

Ah, the Moo Vaughn injury

That’s why the railings they put up in front of the dugouts in response to that injury are called “cow catchers.”

On one of the few nights that the team could make it a "feel good" story...

…and they managed to eff that up too.

Is it the Rex curse?

The Vlad curse?

Oh, it’s a curse alright…

…But it’s simly nothing more than the We Suck Moaky, Vinergary Balls After a 5-Mile Jog on a 98 Degree Day curse.

Wasn't the pregame question...

Will the Angels use more than 3 pitchers? Since the Angels used 6, shouldn’t the correct answer be Yes and not No?

Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

I'm still depressed

Might take a couple weeks to get over all this stuff.

me too...

… Even if Haren’s injury isn’t that bad (which it probably isn’t), its a microcosm of how this season has gone. For every bit of incouragement we’ve gotten, we’ve received a double helping of despair. Kendry hits a walkoff salami, breaks leg. Any win streak is surmounted by an even greater losing streak. Bases loaded less than 2 outs in so many crucial situations, no score. Excited about Dan Harens 1st start as an angel? Here’s a harsh reminder that this is 2010 angels baseball…

All I’m thinking now for the rest of the season: Wtf is next?

and with that said...

… Let’s play playoff spoiler! I still have love for the man but, I really hope Big John gets lit up tonight. That might make me feel better even if for a short while.

Revisiting Mo Vaughn's legendary rant (2002 spring training)

Vaughn quickly hit the roof when he heard that Percival said in the Times story, “We may miss Mo’s bat, but we won’t miss his leadership. Darin Erstad is our leader.”
A handful of Mets teammates watched in astonishment as Vaughn began venting a stream of 35 expletives in about 10 minutes.

“Let me say this: who the [bleep] is Troy Percival?” Vaughn bellowed yesterday morning. "What has he done in this game?

“Has he led his team to a pennant? Has he ever [bleeping] pitched in a big game that meant something?”

“This guy talks so much [bleep], and he hasn’t even done [bleep],” Vaughn said of Percival. "He has the right to evaluate and analyze people, but what the hell has he done to deserve that right?

“He hasn’t done [bleep] to lead them anywhere. I got hardware, I got playoff appearances, I got an MVP. I’ve been to the playoffs twice. What the hell has he done? Who the hell is he?”

“They ain’t got no flags hanging at friggin’ Edison Field, so the hell with them.”

has some sweet baseball stitching welts. It’s like being branded.

How did we fall so far from last year to now?

What is currently missing in our lineup. I say our two glaringly obvious holes are in LF and RF. And let us not for get about the little lizard doing virtually nothing. It is going to take a lot to catch up to the talent on the Texas team.

When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

Good thing I didn't follow the game . 2nd inning .

Bases loaded and nobody outs . No FFFing runs . I would probably be banned right now from what I could have said .

I'll be that guy

Ok. When are we going to start the “get rid of Hatcher campaign”? Someone usually starts it by now. With all seriousness though “who has lived up to their top potential or surprised on the upside?”. Have we acquired anyone who has gotten better than what they were when we got them? Just asking.
