Vlad in 2011?
Since most many of us are already thinking about 2011, I thought I'd throw an interesting question out there.
What about Vlad as DH in 2011? While most fans wanted Vlad to stay around for the legacy of the Angels, many reluctantly agreed that letting him walk after 2009 was a sound business decision. But now that he appears healthy in 2010, I wonder if he and the front office would consider reuniting, so that Vlad could finish his career as a Halo.
His current contract contains a mutual option for 2011. Thoughts?

No.
As much as I love Vlad, based on talking to actual players, he simply wouldn’t have had these numbers in Anaheim. He will also be a year older in 2011.
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.
Allow me to be sentimental with Arte's money...
I say yes. The guys gonna hit .300. Who knows how much power he’ll maintain. But I don’t care. He sure as hell proved the Angels wrong this year. And I personally think he’s got enough in the tank for a good couple seasons. Vlad’s the one guy where if he’s up, you stop what you’re doing and see what he does. There’s not too many of those guys in baseball. And the Angels sure as hell don’t have one right now.
Plus I REALLY WANT TO SEE HIM IN THE HOF IN AN ANGELS HAT!

It's a big difference in terms of weather, etc.
Texas approximates the Domican much more than Orange County and Montreal ever did. Perhaps this has reinvigorated him. I highly, highly doubt he would ever replicate that in Anaheim again.
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.
And if he wins MVP this year and subsequently goes into the Hall as a Ranger or an Expo, I'm going to be really freaking pissed.

Prepare to be freaking pissed.
He is going in as an Expo. All he needs now is to win the MVP, and he is putting himself into consideration.
And it has nothing to do with being reinvigorated because Texas is a lot more like the DR than OC. It has a lot more to do with nobody giving him the multi-year contract that he felt he had earned, even though he had just given the Halos the worst 4 years of his pro career, and feeling disrespected. He took less to go with the Rangers than he wanted. He could have gone LOTS of places and taken less than he wanted. Revenge is an excellent motivator.
"Wastin away again in Minor-Leaguer-Ville..."
6/29/2010 through 7/1/2010 say hello.
6 for 11.
3 home runs.
8 runs batted in.
1 walk to go with his only 1 strike out.
Pretty much his finest 3-game performance of the season.
"Wastin away again in Minor-Leaguer-Ville..."
So you're saying he's going all Ty Cobb and just being awesome when he feels like it at the exact right time?
Or is he just feasting off of mediocre pitching, Exhibit A Kazmir?
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.
Really? Link?
He took less to go with the Rangers than he wanted. He could have gone LOTS of places and taken less than he wanted.
It seemed pretty clear that the only teams which asked him to dance (without something really demeaning like a minor league deal or a $1M salary) were the Angels and the Rangers. Vlad didn’t sign with Texas until the middle of January, which indicates he was either very picky and patient, or glad to see Texas open its wallet to him. Remember that Jermaine Dye still hasn’t received a deal to play, and Dye figured to be a cheaper alternative to Guerrero. It wasn’t a really good market for aging DH types.
That said, MLB will decide what hat Guerrero wears if he is voted in. MLB showed with Andre Dawson that it had no problem assigning an inducted player to wear the cap of a defunct franchise. On the other hand, I can imagine Arte working the room to persuade the committee to have that cap adorned with an A; nobody will be making a similar appeal on behalf of the Expos.

Nope.
Let him go to the highest bidder. Watch Seattle sign him and he returns to his 2009 status.

'his 2009 status' . . . you mean his .370/.393/.593 in the postseason?
Figgy sucked and we needed to let him go because his terrible postseason.
Vlady sucked and we needed to let him go because his regular season reminds me a lot of Matusi’s.
The players can’t win. But No one can deny we are a much worse team without them.

I didn't mean his playoff status
I mean the painful to watch Vlad chugging around the bases and often injured.
I think if Vlad was on this team now, in the same role as Matsui, he would have been the same player Matsui is. I think Vlad has been benefiting of playing in Arlington.

Probably with a World Series ring too!

Neither. the Rangers won't be able to afford him
and the Rangers aren’t beating anyone in the playoffs
small sample size, but...
how did he do in Anaheim earlier this season? And what are we afraid of this upcoming series?
There are other variables, but he just looks healthier overall.

Vlad Review
Age/BA/OBP/SLG/OPS
2008: 33/.303/.365/.521/.886
2009: 34/.295/..334/.460/.794
2010: 35/.307/.356/.519/.875
Vlad’s essentially the hitter he was in 2008. Note however that he will be 36 in 2011. Abreu and Matsui are both 36 this year and there’s been plenty of bitching about those two.
Beware of chasing after older players. That was the Angels trAdition back in the 1980s and it wasn’t the greatest stategy.

Yeah those signings/trades really were frustrating...
trading prospect after prospect and spending millions on the likes of Von Hayes, Claudell Washington, Dave Winfield and Dave Parker.
Ugh.
I'd love to bring him back
But only if we were unable to unload Abreu’s contract, which is unlikely. Vlad, Bobby, Matsui, and Rivera are 4 people I don’t want to see in the outfield next season. We would have to clear the DH spot for him.
Bring on the athletes! Promote Bourjos and sign Crawford!

nope.....

Absolutely!
Despite his great season, and the sentimental reasons of having him back in an Angels uni, and wanting him in the HOF as an Angel…he’s just fun to watch! At the end of the day, you go the ballpark to be entertained.

Love the guy but he wasn’t fun to watch last year! At all! Double plays way too many times
by NJinHB on Jul 28, 2010 8:21 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
what are you talking about, in the post season he was money, he was the only reason we got by Boston last year
In Kobe we trust!
Exactly
And it was a perfect farewell gift from Vladdy. I’m glad he’s having a good year this season (as painful as it is to see it) but let’s just leave well enough alone. Sometimes DH’s bounce back for one last big year (think Frank Thomas with the A’s) but then fall back to earth after signing another big deal (think Frank Thomas with the Jays). Let someone else gamble on Vlad and his knees.

He has been playing like shit the last few weeks
I doubt he keeps up his 1st half production for 162 games.
I took your stash.
he wasn't playing like money in the playoffs.
he was a gimpy version of ichiro who couldn’t play the outfield. he was a singles machine, and while that’s all well and good from certain positions, some pop would have been useful.
we already have abreu to play DH next year in our revamped OF of hunter/bourjos/PLEASE CRAWFOD. this team needs to shed the aging aspect of our offense.
vlad was an awesome angel. now he should focus on playing in hitters’ parks to pad his hall credentials.
but like someone else said, and i also noticed recently, his july has not been on par with the first few months of the season at all. will his body hold up as the summer goes on and into the fall?
his ba/obp/slg looks like this in july:
207 .289 .322
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart - Always an Angel
he slugged almost .600
It’s ok to look up the stats before posting.

Bad things happen when you sign someone because of one good year in Texas. The Angels learned this from Gary Matthews Jr. The Cubs and now the Mariners are seeing it from Milton Bradley.
Guerrero seems to be slowing down in the second half anyways. I expect his $9 million mutual option for 2011 will be exercised by both sides, since the bankrupt Rangers won’t be able to find a power bat any cheaper, and Guerrero should know he’ll never get more than that on the open market.
