Prince Fielder
The Angels are reportedly interested in acquiring the corpulent first baseman. What do you think the Brewers would want, and would it be worth it? I know the guy has power, but is it enough to make it worth trading away a slew of solid prospects? I'm leaning towards no. It just feels like Mo Vaughn 2.0 to me.His numbers are down this year, and really a man of his carriage is only going to remain healthy for so long. On top of that , he has stated he wants to continue playing first base. Could prove a problem next season.
So should we or shouldn't we try and grab the Prince?

reportedly ? ? ? ? ?
other than reportedly pulling this out of the thin air where oh where did you read one report anywhere that inferred, let alone stated, that the Angel were in interested in Prince Fielder?
According to Jon Heyman
Who also thinks the cashless Rangers are trying to get him

LAAInsider has it too...
What the hell else do we have left in our system to sacrifice??? I say, just say no. I’d rather see what we can get for Juarning Track, Collapso, and Naps? I’m ready to see some OF Defense that includes Bourjos in CF. Yes, I said that right, CF! Let the old man go run around in LF for awhile.
yeah thin air
thats where I got it. I was sitting here touching myself in an inappropriate fashion when I thought, “I KNOW! Prince Fielder to the Angels!!”

I hadn’t thought of that, but now that you mention it, it’s perfect! Though I probably shoulda said “Prince Fielder to the Angels, Butthead”

sometimes theres at least a little fire, or a spark, to the smoke
this has little to no real value, but I had heard from a few friends (one an intern for the halos and another working with MLB leading up to the all star game) that Fielder was a name getting kicked around their offices a bunch a few weeks back. Not that this is in any way indicative of what may actually be happening…but I think it would be silly to assume that the Angels brass isn’t at least weighing the pros and cons of such a move.
Again, grain of salt. I’ve done internships elsewhere and chatter in the office of a sports team isn’t that far from what it is on here. People who aren’t calling the shots speculate just like we do, so take it for what its worth.

No, after the Haren trade, I don't think we can really afford another big trade.
I rather keep the prospects and use the money we would be paying Fielder to get someone like Crawford or Werth.
for purposes of winning it all in 2011 or 2012
Mike Trout is the only untouchable prospect.

Exactly
we get Fielder and sign Crawford in the offseason and now have a mixture of speed and power. WS Champs 2011 and 2012.
Now batting, our rookie of the year, Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike TROUT!

CF isn't a position of need for them
of course they’d want the best they could get. Starting pitching is what they want.
Getting Fielder might get us over that 84 win plateau.
Unfortunately that would still be several wins short of what it will take to catch the Rangers.
Torii Hunter has some Brain Movage
Come on how excited would you guys be if we got Fielder!
I know I would be. It’d be fun to have a proven beast in the lineup. Thorw K-Mo at 3rd and he can be the new kung fu panda and have Fielder and K-Mo back to back in te lineup. That’d be awesome! I know I’d be excited.
Now batting, our rookie of the year, Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike TROUT!
No thanks
We need an OF that can get to a fly ball or a decent reliever. I’d rather we just ride this out and fix our problems in the off season.
This isn't 'Nam. This is bowling. There are rules.
Couldn't you have both?
I mean… Include Rivera in this deal frees up left field for a guy like Willits or one of our outfield prospects.

Meh.
I’d say go for it if they’ll take Mathis, Kazmir and Wood—maybe re-sign McAnulty and throw him in there, too. Just don’t touch Quinlan.
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.
Would be nice but should address old outfield first
Fielder would be a nice infusion of youth and power to the lineup and I would love to see him in a Angels uniform, but I think the greater need is to improve the aging outfield with speed and defense from Bourjos and Crawford. Inproving the production at 3B also needs to be addressed. Does anyone know if Morales and or Napoli are able to handle 3B?
You know who REALLY could have fixed our aging outfielder problem?
Granderson.

i seriously doubt how much we need to involve ourselves withanother player that hits solo home runs and is slow and bad defensively
Fielder is worse than Napoli in the clutch bomb department.
24 HR 46 RBI .262 AVG
It might be a bad year for him. But he is also a dick (see video of him trying to run into the Dodgers clubhouse last year) and not the type of guy we need to fix how our team is playing.

even I would try to run in the Dodgers clubhouse and beat someone up
"Woody goes Buzz Lightyear over the green monster"
Is your analysis of his personality based on that video?
There’s more to the story and he could have gone in the clubhouse. He chose not to. He seems universally popular with his teammates. I’ve never heard a negative word about him. He isn’t what I would call slow and he isn’t bad defensively. Calling him not clutch is daft.
Do you want the team to trade for him if you’re wrong on every point in your evaluation?
no. because i genuinely dislike him as a player. obviously i don't know him.
but i do have a personal negative experience with him. i was seven years old, i believe (whenever we had his dad Cecil on our team), and waiting in line at angel stadium to take some swings on the simulated pitching thing that our team had back then. (basically a pitching machine that had a picture of an Angel pitcher throwing to you) i waited in the line for like 45 minutes to get in this thing and when I am the next kid in line, Cecil walks up with his fat son who was like 14-15 at the time. Prince then proceeds to cut in front of the line, and take five turns on the machine. After which, they shut down the machine. Cecil also didn’t even acknowledge the line or the kids who he had cut in front of with his son. And on his way out of the batting cage, Prince turns to the line and sticks his tounge out at the kids in line. So, I have no interest now in having the fat ass back in Anaheim.

thats a very good point.
but i cannot be blamed for how i feel about him. haha

Shouldn't 3rd place teams be sellers right about now?
That would be comical if the Angels became sellers. Set the record for the shortest turn around from buyer to seller.
It's tempting...
when I think of all the weight references that could be used whenever anything is written about him…hmm…no, that’s just selfish. Final verdict: no. No to the Prince.
We need prince and McAnulty so we can have the fattest line-up in baseball
and charge two bits a gander.

And trade for Joba Chamberlain.
Add some girth to the ’pen!
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
I would love Prince Fielder.
He is a legit power threat and he is an on-base machine, something the Angels need. He is only hitting .262 but still has a .400 OBP. His RBI numbers are down because he has been abysmal w/RISP (.176/.395/.242, .637 OPS, 1 HR, 20 RBI) and with runners on in general (.209/.381/.311, .691 OPS, 4 HR, 26 RBI). Yet he is a god with the bases empty (.311/.420/.684, 1.105 OPS, 20 HR, 20 RBI).
But I’m not worried about that too much since his career line w/RISP is a solid .262/.407/.467 (.874 OPS) and with men on in general is .274/.397/.505 (.902 OPS). So he has a good track record of producing when it counts.
Like Haren and Callaspo, he would not be a rental player and he will set us up beautifuly for 2011. He is under team control through at least 2012 (and possibly longer but I don’t know for sure) and he can be shifted to DH with the return of Morales next year, making his poor defense negligible.

He is in his 3rd year of arbitration in 2011. He’s a free agent for 2012, and a Boras client (so no extensions).
As I recall, he has also stated (when linked to trade rumors in the past) that he does not want to DH. Some players (especially younger ones) consider being a DH to be an insult, a declaration that their defensive skills aren’t good enough for the major leagues.
"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason
I think he just likes to play
He just said that he’d like to play 1st when he signs a new contract and accepts the possibility of being a DH till then.
I think he listens to his agent
If he elects to become a DH while still in mid-20s, then he is effectively cutting off millions of dollars of future revenue. A player who hits AND is a defensive player will earn more money than one who is a one-tool player.
No way he is going to blithely accept a role cast upon him as “only” a DH, not at age 26. Say what you will about Scott Boras, but no agent is better at maximizing the income of his clients.
Beyond that, our problem is we have too many statues in the lineup. Prince is fine if all he has to do is jog around the bases following a home run, but otherwise he’s pretty much a clot. The best route for the Angels is to move Abreu into the DH slot, which means Fielder would have no defensive role once Morales returns. There is no point in paying Fielder $12M or so in arbitration for one year if there is no guaranteed slot for him on the field.

If we are going to trade for a Brewer
couldn’t we get Rickie Weeks instead? Howie and Maicer for Weeks, make it happen!
by No Bologna Polonia on Jul 29, 2010 10:26 AM PDT reply actions
Hell no
Weeks is so unpredictable. He just had some season ending injury a couple years ago, and I’ll take Howie and Izzy any day.
He gets injured once and he's "unpredictable"?
What does that make Howie and Maicer?? Barring something happens in the next few days, this will be te first season Howie makes it past 105 games. And I think we all know about Maicer’s time on the DL. I guess they are more predictable in that you know they will be injured every year.
I find Weeks very predictable. He’s an awful fielder who smacks the hell out of the ball. He’s always had good power. He’s gonna have have at least 30 home runs and 100 rbi’s out of the lead off spot. And he has some speed. That’s not something I would mind having.
