Rangers go all in, sacrifice future
The Rangers have gone all in for this season, with the specific knowledge that this is the ONE and ONLY year, they will have their shot at the playoffs and a World Series. Don't believe me? Take a look.
Rangers Free Agents: Vlad Guerrero, Cliff Lee, Jorge Cantu, Rich Harden, Frank Francisco, Darren Oliver, Bengie Molina.
- Does anyone here actually believe the Rangers, who are bankrupt and have to get the "ok" from their creditors to spend money, wll be able to afford Cliff Lee's ace performances, or Vlad's offense? Will their bullpen still be good with Francisco and Oliver?
Players/Prospects lost via trade: Justin Smoak (blue chip, 1st round pick), Blake Beaven (1st round pick, 3.29 ERA in minors), Josh Lueke (3.31 ERA, 11.7 K's per 9 in minors), Evan Reed (1.76 ERA in AA/AAA this season), Omar Poveda (21 year old AAA pitcher).
- This would be the equivilant of the Angels losing Mike Trout, Trevor Reckling, Tyler Chatwood, Fabio Martinez and Trevor Bell.
Arbitration Eligible Players: Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, CJ Wilson, Darren O'Day, Derrek Holland, Chris Ray.
- There's already talk that the Rangers may be unable to afford Josh Hamilton after this year and Nelson Cruz after next year.
Fret not, Angel faithful. The Rangers will be in a self inflicted state of disarray following the 2010 season. Fortunately, the Angels GM was smart enough to reel in another ace and a starting 3B, thereby avoiding any possible bidding war for the services of a SP or Adrian Beltre/Jorge Cantu this offseason.
The Angels have problems, the bullpen and offensive woes are undeniable, but just by looking at this, we aren't totally screwed like Texas is.

Considering Mark Cuban is going to steal this team from under Nolan Ryan's ownership group I would do the same.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
I read the Nolan Ryan Ownership has challenged the legitimacy of the auction in court
Apparently it may not have even been legal and the Ryan ownership group may end up with the team. However, I agree. Should Cuban land the Rangers, I think their financial woes will be done.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
Oakland gonna sneak up on them
Rangers fade will shock them all and contraction may become necessary

wasn't chris ray traded for lee?
i remember that being part of the deal.
and Vladdy has an option for next year. not a guaranteed FA.
That being said, I agree with a lot of this. Texas will still be good next year, not THIS good. But still very good, very young, and very athletic. Something that I hope we will be able to say at some point in the future.

it was smoak, but he wasn't the only player traded.

Ah, right then.
I was thinking he was talking about Chris Davis, as I didn’t remember/hadn’t heard of Chris Ray.
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.
Yup, Chris Ray to the Giants for Molina
still cannot believe Benji Molina hit for the cycle…but, it was Fenway, and the CF was no CFer, and new to Boston.
Blez: Most folks seem to believe that the big flaw with the 2010 Oakland A's will be the lack of any power.

hmmm
not sure I share the enthusiasm.
many of Texas’ s players are pretty young. Feliz, Andrus and Kinsler come to mind. they have an option for Vladdy, so he’ll prob be there next season. if the auction gets finalized then the new owner will surely make Josh hamilton’s contract the #1 priority, unless Josh wants to go somewhere else, of course.
besides Smoak, I’m not really sure they’re going to lose much. not to mention they had the #1 system in MLB, so they can easily get away with losing a few prospects.
i think you're really grasping here
of all of those prospects lost via trade, only Justin Smoak really has the likelihood of being a quality major leaguer. The others are not necessarily scrubs, but the Rangers have a deep system still – plenty of young pitchers with similar or better stuff than what they gave up. Far from “sacrificing the future”.
Of your arb-eligible guys: Hamilton, Cruz, Wilson, and O’Day will all be back with only Hamilton and Cruz getting decent raises. Most of it will be offset by not having to pay any more money to Catalanotto, Padilla, and Millwood like they are doing this season. I don’t see how Derek Holland is arb-eligible. He’s got like 2-3 months of service time. Even if he was, he would get a minimal raise. Chris Ray was traded for Bengie Molina.
Of the FA, I’m sure they’ll work out something with Vlad. The market for an aging slugger with bad knees who has to play in the AL is fairly limited. Plus, I would think if the Rangers make a fair offer, he would accept it considering how well he plays in Arlington. Darren Oliver has a team option so he’ll be back. Francisco is likely gone, and that will bring more draft picks to Texas…not a huge loss considering the strength of the bullpen. Harden is a mutual option which Texas wouldn’t want to pick up anyways.
Their ownership situation will be settled shortly (the auction is next week) and most of the prospective bidders have already declared their intent to raise the payroll.

Your fooling yourself if you think Vlad will be back
The only reason you guys got him in the first place was because of his dismal play last year. Angels fans were tired of watching him fail. Remember we tried to “work something out” too. He wasn’t interested in redeeming himself with the team he had just spent the last 6 years with. He preferred to stick it to his former team and fell into your lap. Now that he has regained his a semblance of his former self he will be looking for a multiyear deal. You think Vlad will take less money and fewer years to stay in Texas? Thats funny. On the other hand you could always overpay him.
realistically, what do you think Vlad's options are
nobody would touch him in the NL. At least 1/3 to 1/2 of AL teams wouldn’t have any interest due to money and/or a better/cheaper alternative.
If the Rangers get in the ballpark, I think Vlad would want to stay on a team that is good in a stadium where he hits well, and in a state with no income tax. We’ll see.
If some team wants to offer him 3 years, $30 million, then I could see him leaving.

I agree with most of your points.
It’s a bummer when fans have to lie to each other for collective approval. It’s wimpy as hell.
I’ve lived through a shitload of crap Angels teams, and am grateful for the past seven years. Now we’re in crap mode again, and my motto is the same: Good fans fight for good results.
Folks shouldn’t have to pimp fictions to get behind the mule and push. Texas is good, and the Angels have to get better. Spin doctors can suck it. We got work to do without them blowing smoke up our keisters.

Don't think so
Texas has a deep farm system, they really gave up nothing to get Cantu. Texas has the depth in the farm the Halos aspire to, therefore the trade comparisons being made are not germane. As soon as the ownership issue is resolved in Texas….and it will be resolved….they most likely will not have the same payroll constraints that exist today.
As for losing Lee – even if / when it happens, the Rangers will be a team to be reckoned with for years to come.
If they did "sacrifice the future," trying to win THIS YEAR ...
is a good idea to boost the value of the franchise and help attract a buyer. Hopefully they can find an owner in spite of the impending Great Texas Rangers Collapse of 2010.
I love this team.

Eh, Texas has used a lot
I think they might drop slightly, but not too much. They have a good farm and an excellent young core still, and the new ownership should run the ship better.
It’ll be a fun few years in the AL West.
Texas has no lcues what will happen after this season
So theyre gonna do whatever the f* they want to win this year.
I cant see them being half as good with all the mone and an abundance of prospects gone.
Why is it so windy in Oklahoma?

Word.... we are in relatively good shape compared to Texas....
Although, haven’t Texas been bankrupt since last season?! I don’t understand how they are able to still add to their payroll?!
It’s very strange for me to see us being sellers rather than buyers at this point of the season. Tonights Texas win truly put us in an inconceivably large hole!
O well…. at least we got a good future ahead of us, hopefully our prospects don’t pull a Woody on us
You've been wrong on Texas all season.
Now you’re still trying to please the crowd.
Fake populism blows. Texas is good this year, their farm is still quite stocked, and they have a future.

These guys aren't going away soon
They have a glut of pitching talent still moving up in the system. They’re pretty light on hitting prospects now that Justin Smoak is gone, but even mediocre offenses can win games when coupled with strong pitching.
The ownership situation is a big problem, however. This might severely hinder their ability to fill the holes in their roster in the off-season, depending on how things play out. But check your facts. Vladimir Guerrero has a $9 million mutual option on 2011, and Darren Oliver has a $3.5 million option that vests with 59 appearances. Oliver is almost guaranteed to return now, and Vlad could very realistically be retained. And Nolan Ryan will personally rob the Treasury Department to keep Josh Hamilton.
Stick to your delusions Angels downers/Ranger trolls, and I'll stick to mine
We’ll see who’s right in a year, if we actually remember and care enough to bring it up.

I was really hoping that Cuban
was going to buy the Dodgers. I think the Dodgers need an owner like Cuban. And that is a franchise that will make you more money down the road than the Rangers. The Dodgers are a National Brand, just bellow teams like the Yankees and Red Sox. Rangers aren’t really a nationally recognized brand… even if they win the West, even if they win the ALCS, they are still the Rangers.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
I blog about the Angels at The Diamond Aces
The McCourts need first to be convinced that they can't own the Dodgers anymore
That will probably take a year.
And who knows, if Cuban doesn’t get the Rangers, maybe he does make a bid on the Dodgers when they hit the market.

Rangers et go of a couple more prospect in return for Christian Guzman
I’m not lying guys, they had deoth before, and they sac’d it all for this season. Best of luck.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
I don't disagree with their strategy
Sometimes, the stars really do need to align for a World Series title. Take the Angels in 2002, Frankie and Lackey were little known rookies who saved the day. Scott Spiezo was our 1B! Nowadays, the team has a much larger payroll. While postseason appearances have increased, there has not been a return trip to WS. Texas right now has a good combo of young talent, productive Vets and great pitching. Sometimes, you just have to roll the dice and see where it lands. If giving away Justin Smoak means getting over the top, you have to do it, esp since the team has been mired in the AL West cellar for so long. The Marlins have won 2 titles, anything can happen.
Mark Cuban would be good for MLB…someone to shake things up a little.
This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.
-Clipper Darrell
Mark Cuban is a P.O.S.....
And isn’t good for any game. He’s no better than the loud mouth drunken fan who gets tossed from the stadium. You can root for your team, but do it with a little bit of class. We know Arte Moreno does.
Having said that, yes, the Rangers are making an intelligent move by putting it all on the line for their one shot at the World Championship. The facts are; the Angels having a greater degree of success, a better manager and a higher payroll, these three factors combined indicate that the Angels will more than likely be favored to win the West year in and year out as they have for the past 6 years. Meanwhile the Rangers minor league system isn’t necessarily talented, but it is extraordinarily deep, embarrassingly deep even, their payroll is low, their ownership is no sure thing and soon enough those youngsters will be expensive. A team like that has to strike when it’s their chance. Guess what everyone, this is their chance, they probably won’t get another one.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
We only lost one guy out of our Top 30 prospects, chew on that fat.

All we lost was Smoak and a some depth.
Everyone still rates the farm as a top 3 farm in baseball.
