Angels Payroll Questions

As far as our payroll goes i had some questions that i thought some of you guys could help answer. I know that Matthews jr and Speier are still on the payroll this year but when will they be dumped off.

Does anyone know what kind of contract Crawford is looking for, and what possible free agents we have from our current team and what they will be asking for.

And I'm not sure this is possible to find out but what is the Angels payroll and how much money will be available at the beginning of the resigning period.

Speier is off the books at the end of this season, GMJ is owed money for 2011 too though.

Not sure what Crawford wants.

Our free agents are: Fuentes, Shields, and Matsui

Opening Day 2010 payroll was roughly 121 million, and Haren added 4.5 million to that(which is how much more than Saunders he makes)

by ~MMP~ on Jul 29, 2010 9:40 PM PDT reply actions

Speiers contract is finished after this year

we still owe GMJ 11 million next year. Nothing major by way of people leaving us. Matsui, Q and Shields all expire. Fuentes option wont vest so I don’t know what they’ll do there. We also have 10 players going to arb over the Winter. Before the arbs our payroll will be around 94million next year, I would guess the arbs will cost around 30million so we’re looking at 124 million without any free agent signings

by Epic Dean on Jul 29, 2010 9:47 PM PDT reply actions

I dunno

Kendrys 1st year arb and Bora$$ is his agent, Weave coming off an All Star year with the same agent, there could easily be 14 million on them alone then Nap, Aybar and Kendrick will collect about 10. Mathis, Willits, Frandsen, Callapso and Stokes will combine for around 3

by Epic Dean on Jul 29, 2010 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

kendry wasnt putting up AS good of numbers before he got hurt as he did last year

and they could argue they dont know what theyre getting post-surgery

I’m getting around 77 million give or take for active roster minus free agents. even with GMJ its below 94 million

by firebird81 on Jul 29, 2010 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Here is where I got the number

there is a link to a spreadsheet there with our payroll obligations for 2010-2014

by Epic Dean on Jul 29, 2010 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

This is where we're at

And best to overestimate arb – In addition to Weaver and Morales, Napoli will likely get a huge raise, and Aybar thought he was ripped off this year so will push hard. Unless the Halos are able to recoup some 2010 cash by trading Fuentes and Matsui, and/or free up 2011 payroll by trading Rivera and Rodney, Haren was our big acquisition for the year

by rghan on Jul 30, 2010 6:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Ya, I was looking at that too. There is that 93.667 and then the arbitration guys

Even if none of them got raises, payroll would be at 110 million and obviously they are getting raises.

Hopefully the team can free up some payroll though.

Should have put another choice: complete player

Our team is old, slow and rough on D.

We must get Crawford, no matter how many $$$ or years.

by elricsi on Jul 29, 2010 10:34 PM PDT reply actions

I wouldn't mind Jayson Werth either if we can't get Crawford.

And for all you people who thinks he’s just a product of the Philly bandbox…

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?n1=werthja01&year=Career&t=b#hmvis

His home/road splits this year are a bit more drastic in favor of home but if you look at 2009 and 2008, they are pretty even so he is legit.

the one thing i dont like about Werth is

he will be turing 32 next year, so that means at the end of his 4-6 year deal he will be turning 35-37

if Crawford gets a 6 year deal he will be turning 34 at the end of that contract

No I mean its pointless

with the emergence of a much cheaper, almost as effective Brett Gardner it would just be reckless to sign Crawford.

I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

by PhiSlamma on Jul 30, 2010 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

But they'll do it anyway.

They have Mark-Freaking-Teixeira, and that still didn’t stop them from acquiring Lance Berkman today.

Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.

by Clutch on Jul 30, 2010 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

One thing is for certain....

They’re not going to get significantly better next year unless they either increase payroll or dump a large contract and Bobby and Kaz are the only two large contracts that aren’t performing to value.

These questions can all be answered at Cot's

here is a link
http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/los-angeles-angels-of-anaheim.html

This may sound snide. I don’t mean it to be. If you searched for Angels baseball contracts (or some variation of that), Cot’s would be the first hit. If you searched for Angels baseball salaries (or some variation), it would be among the first hits. Almost everything is on the internet these days, so you should try your own searches before just spewing questions that easily can be answered.

by Brody on Jul 30, 2010 8:54 AM PDT reply actions

Thanks for that information

But if you wouldn’t mind a suggestion regarding style: if you want to avoid sounding snide, avoid snide words such as “spewing”. In fact, you should lose the entire last clause (after “these days”).

Part of the reason I ask the questions is to get others opinions on what they think the Angels should do this offseason as well

One time...

by mikvitu on Jul 31, 2010 2:49 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

We are likely to drop Fuentes, Matsui, Speier and Shields

That’s $9 mil, $6 mil, $5.25 and $5.35 for a total of $25.55 mil coming off the books.

Even after arbitration and picking up Haren, we should have some flexibility to say, sign some competent relievers.

I used the link Brody provided for this in case you were wondering.

Look I hope no outfielder FAs get signed

and instead we bring up Bourjous and move Abrea to the dh spot. If we can trade either Bobby or Juan then maybe we go after an outfielder. If rout also wins a spot in training camp and no trades Juan and Bobby and be the 4th outfielder and share the DH spot

No way Trout wins a spot in training camp

He’s barely just made it to high A ball, is only 18 or 19, and is still rough around the edges. He’s probably 2-3 years away, at least.

THANK YOU.

I’m sick and tired of the so called Ninja getting aging OF.

Arte isn’t going to move the team to Boca, Tony!

by Halos in DE on Jul 30, 2010 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

The Angels for much of the 2000's have done similar

Steve Finley..GMJ Bobby Abreu twice, Matsui. Along the way, they have declared Garret Anderson and Vlad as too old and too unproductive, only to sign and re-sign more aging OFs. A very practical front office.

Bobby Abreu was clearly overpaid in the off-season, as the front office got carried away with his plate discipline and bid against themselves for his services. v

We have two “closers” FROD and Fuentes making 14.5 mil total. The offseason the Angels will likely throw more money at the problem to get more relievers. I guess uncovering diamonds in the rough for the bullpen is no longer the Angel’s forte.

This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.

We really stink at buying free agent relievers

So let’s just stick with the cheap ones like Jepsen, Bulger, Kohn, Thompson, K-Rod II. If they succeed then we’re back to the good old days of cheap effective bullpens. If they fail, they can’t be any worse than Speier/Rodney/Shields (after extension)/Fuentes. But at least they’ll be cheap, allowing us to spend $ elsewhere.

Doubtful we'll see any contracts for pitchers like Colon's again

I think Arte got snakebit when he saw what happened to his money in buying a pitcher for 4 years. The offer to Lackey was for 4 plus an option (as I recall) and it wasn’t that lucrative, or at least less so than the more-per-season 3 year deal he was offered previously.

Likewise, Fuentes’ deal is effectively a 2 year deal, as are the ones for Pinero and Rodney. I don’t anticipate more contracts like those given to Shields and Speier ever again, unless the pitcher is still in his middle 20s (25-28, and infrequently does a pitcher hit free agency while still in that frame).

If we bid on anyone for the bullpen it will be a 2-3 year deal, tops. There is too much money wasted in months on the DL when the timeline gets stretched out longer than that.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

by George Kaplan on Jul 31, 2010 8:41 AM PDT up reply actions

This is a completely accurate assessment of our strategy

The front office has moved away from long-term contracts, especially for its pitchers. If we have a real need for a hitter who offers multiple skills (for example, Torii), we will offer five years, or in the case of an extreme talent like Teixeira we will go even further. In general, however, we have offered no more than three-year contracts for hitters — this is why Figgins left. This is even more the case for pitchers. The only ones to receive offers exceeding two years in recent seasons were Santana and Lackey (both four years). I, for one, agree with this strategy.

by Brody on Aug 1, 2010 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

On a side note...

Does anyone think Angels will be able to dump anyone by end of today?

I think we are stuck with all this dead weight.

Any time you think you have the game conquered the game will turn around and punch you right in the nose.

Yeah, there shouldnt be a problem with them passing through waivers

Not too many teams would be willing to put a claim on any of our overpaid flops. I’d imagine Abreu, fuentes, Matsui and maybe even rodney could all get through because of their salaries.
