Rangers acquire Cristian Guzman sell more of the farm
How much of the farm will be left when new owner buys team. At this rate they should do a wal mart rollback on their price.

Shoot for the moon!
Boosting the sale-ability of the franchise with a deep playoff push. Too bad the new buyer will have a rough hangover of fan indifference shortly thereafter when they are 70 and 90 next year.
I love this team.
Yeah but if they actually win the World Series
That would probably be worth it for them. Look at how the whole dynamic of the Angels has changed since ‘02. Sometimes you have to shoot for the moon. If the Nats or the Pirates suddenly found themselves in a what if situation like the Rangers, I kind of think they’d just run with what they got. So I can see how a Rangers fan could be all for it right now.
Plus it would suck for the Angels not to go, but I’d rather see the Rangers than the Skanks or Sux.
Any time you think you have the game conquered the game will turn around and punch you right in the nose.

It’s a smart move. They have the top farm system, why not go all in?
I love this team.

Well
Other than Smoak, they haven’t gotten rid of any top prospects. But you have to figure that their minor league depth is being depleted pretty well. As halowood mentioned yesterday, almost all of the guys they traded for will not be kept after this season.

That may be whistling past the gravestones.
There is no reason to believe that the change of ownership will transform the Texas mindset into that of, say, Kansas City.

not really...
MLB is paying for them which in a sense means all fans that attend games are (meaning we are).
Don't disagree with what they're doing.
They obviously sense a legitimate shot at a world series this year and are going for it. Other than Smoak, are they REALLY going to regret any of this?

These "prospects" are nobodies.
A 25-yr-old 18th rounder, and a 23-yr-old 25th rounder. Neither of these guys were in John Sickels’ top 20 prospects for Texas this year, or even in his second tier of twenty.
So two scrubs who were not among the top 40 kids on their farm coming into this season just snared them a very Callaspo-esque player (save for the Ks).
This is similar to us trading Mike Anton and Mason Tobin for Callaspo. Instead, we traded a 3rd and a 7th rounder, both of whom Sickels had on his top 20 list for the Angels in ’09 and/or ’10.
Again, outside of Smoak-for-Lee, the Rangers have barely touched the blue chips on their farm.

Wait, you're saying they won't miss the 25 year old in AA with pretty bad stats that they gave up for Guzman?
by ~MMP~ on Jul 30, 2010 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
More or less -- without my reflexive irony -- yes.
Just tired of Halosphere rubbernecking at fake catastrophes.
Texas really is not depleting their farm. If they were, I would take no little pleasure in it.
by Turks Teeth on Jul 30, 2010 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Same here; we don't need them to deplete it anyway
We just need to get back to being ourselves. We are not the full-strength Angels this year.
Losing Kendry is seriously turning out to be like losing Vlad circa 2005. He really is that key to our future success. Kazmir has been an absolute trainwreck. Matsui has been mostly a disappointment and Abreu and Rivera are both underperforming. The bullpen needs some new arms. Most of this should be fixed medically, via farm depth or through free agency by next season.
So basically…

I like the way they are going balls to the wall.
… they are giving themselves the best chance. Do you realize they have never been to the world series? That they have never made it to the ALCS? That in the history of the franchise they have only won 1 playoff game??? . . . . If you were a Rangers fan, tt his is what you would want to see.

They're giving up the best to give themselves the best chance
Not a bad move here. Covering all potential injury issues and filing up holes.
I don’t know what pitchers got sent to Nationals, but if it’s not Perez or Scheppers, it’s not that big deal. Those prospects will be replaced in a couple years. Smoak hurts, but if that’s what you have to give up to go all the way, it is worth it.
I do see the Angels and Rangers battling in 2011 for the West division title, with the edge to the Angels (full season of Haren and Morales).

Only, they're not giving up the best.

ranger danger!! they are going all in!!
if you look at what they’ve given up for cliff lee, jorge cantu and christian guzman, they are clearing out their cupboards. they’ve traded 5 pitchers (one of them their 2007 1st round pick), a 2b and a 1b (smoak who was their 2008 first round pick). with lee, cantu and guzman being free agents and the possibility of texas not being able to re-sign them, only lee gets you 1st round compensation based on the latest elias rankings. guzman nets them a sandwich pick and cantu gets you nothing in return. with the ownership in question and the rangers giving up the farm, could the rangers actually be in the middle of a going out of business sale?
wait...traded five pitchers???? Thats crazy!
Oh wait, didnt we just do that? Yep, sure did.

They did gut their AA rotation
to bad it was considered to have the least talent of all their farm teams going into the season..
Texas is top heavy in AAA and stacked in the Complex league and A- and A+
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
Why Not?
I will say this: kudos to Jon Daniels. No matter what he does, no matter how well the team does, he might find himself without a job next year if a new ownership group decides that it wants its own man in the GM seat. He sees that Texas has a window, perhaps a very narrow one, to make something happen this year, and he’s not going to pass up any chance to make the team better and deeper.
Assuming that the pitching staff outside of Lee is actually legitimate (I still have my doubts), they’re still going to be OK for the next couple of years. They’re well ahead of the Mariners & A’s.
Wtf
This is really cool for Ranger fans, but it’s going to be that much funnier if and when the A’s overtake them for the division crown.
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.

So Alex Ochoa wouldn't come out of retirement?
"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason
Buster Olney of ESPN reports that Nolan Ryan is going to pitch for the Rangers again this year
damn they are going all in
They gave up a couple of good swingmen for this deal.
Seeing as their rotation this year is largely comprised of swingmen, this either hurts them immenesly in 2 or 3 years or doesn’t affect them at all.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
Doesn't impact them at all.
Not Robert Erlin.
Not Tanner Scheppers.
Not Kasey Kiker.
Not Wilmer Font.
Not Nefteli Feliz.
Not Alexi Ogando.
Not Matt Thompson.
Not Tommy Hunter.
Not Robbie Ross.
Between their recent graduates and their up-and-comers, Texas pitching remains plenty deep.
Under what circumstance does it “hurt immensely” to give up two guys that weren’t even on the top 40 list five months ago?
by Turks Teeth on Jul 30, 2010 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Over rated prospects to begin with....
Robert Erlin, swingman in A ball.
Scheppers, a reliever in AAA with an ERA over 4.
Kasey Kiker, a swingman in AA with an ERA over 7!
Wilmer Font, career minor league ERA over 4.
Neftali Feliz, no longer a prospect, will never be a starter.
Alexi Ogando, a 26 year old reliever in AAA.
Matt Thompson, in A ball with an ERA of 4.48.
Tommy Hunter, major league starter, no longer a prospect.
Good looking prospect in A ball.
Texas sure is deep, completely stacked with mediocre minor league arms, hardly any of which project into legit major league starters. Eventually you and everyone else will realize, Texas is deep, but not any more talented than any other system.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.

So... Texas has traded 1 guy out of their top 10 coming into the season in Smoak
2 guys in the 10 to 20 range in Main and Beavan and 2 guys maybe in the 20 to 30 range in Reed and Poveda (pre TJ)
Not really seeing that large of a hit to their system. Bigger hits have been through graduation than through trades the last year

frankly, they havent really gotten much in return except for Lee...
Guzman is injury prone, slow and has no power, never walks and has a below average OBP. Cantu is decent but has shitty D.
Molina? Falling off and still slower than McAnulty running after three cheeseburgers.

Cantu is an upgrade over what they had at 1B
Molina is an upgrade over what they had at C
Guzman is a better bench/Util guy than Arias or Blanco
May have not improved a ton, but all where positive moves to address positions that where below league average and are now approximately league average.
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
Agreed, however, seeing as they are giving away tons of pitching prospects
and their strength is in numbers, as they don’t have any can’t miss pitching talents, they are pretty much decimating their system. All these moves don’t make them better at the major league level (aside from Lee) but they will prevent a collapse because of injury.
The real difference we’ll see in Texas is between this year and next year. Too many FA, too many arb eligible players, there will be a very sudden drop off. Their FO is smart to realize this and go for it all this year.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
All four are rentals...
thats a pretty risky game…especially when its 3 out of the 4 are mediocre rentals.

An upgrade if you consider tinting your windows in your car an upgrade....
Its pretty hard to not get an upgrade at first for a dude who is batting below the mendoza line. And is Molina better than Teagarden or that other dude, nowadays? I mean he’s hitting .245 with a .292 OBP for the season with only five jacks. As a Ranger he’s batting .203. Defensively? Sure. But I cant imagine any of these upgrades other than MAAAAYBE Cantu making any sort of real difference.

God needed a starter. RIP #34
Bottom line is they aquired proven MLB players for suspects&mayybe a prospect
I recall a club a few yrs ago, along with those associated here at Halos Heaven wanting nothing to do with and trade of some so called top prospects for proven big league talent (McPherson, Mathis, Kendrick, Wood etc..) and now they find themselves 9 games out with a .500 win %, and better then only 4 that’s right 4 American league teams (Orioles, Seattle, Kansas City, and Cleveland)
When you see a chance to reach/win a championship (World Series) you go for it! Now a team has a chance to win and win big and this blog wants to try and make one another feel better by saying that the Rangers are mortgaging the future? Please the team has been around for 38+ yrs and hasn’t won squat and you wanna say they are depleting the minor league system? THIS IS THE THEIR FUTURE!! With a team that hasn’t been to a World Series ever and finds itself in the middle a bankruptcy its a no brainer.
I have said many times that the minor league system is in place to help the big club win. If trading unproven talent for proven big leaguer’s is how you win then that is just another way to build or put together a winning team.
So many fans here have bought into the Reagins Ninja bullshit it makes me ill! The man is a front office guy… not a baseball guy. The hopes of catching lighting in a bottle with Matsui like they did with Abreu was comical. Thinking Rodney was an answer was questionable and thinking that Vlad wasn’t able to produce anymore was moronic. The Fuentes deal is a whole different rant (guy doesn’t have a swing and miss pitch).
I don’t give a shit what you say but I am betting if T. Reagins was picking a fucking softball team to play at the company picnic he is picking Vlad before he picks Matsui.
The whole thing is based on the economics and what is taking place across the country. Those that have money (Yanks) are buying up the little people and will once again be the ones that prevail. Those that have nothing will buy on credit (Rangers) in hopes that tomorrow their ship comes in (Cuban/ Ryan). Hell we buy the plain wrap and feed it to our kids telling them it is the same thing just different packaging. Well, thats what the Angels did the past few years when they purchased bottom feeders in FA and refused to trade for proven talent.
Not to burst your bubble fella's
but the rangers have a deep farm system (only the rays have a better one) and it’s still better than the halos
Merry Cliffmas
HAAAAI FagforFeliz...
Get a grip. You’re not bursting anyone’s bubble. Contrary to popular belief a large majority of us on here graduate high-school and have at least a basic understanding that the Angels farm system has its gaps.
WHAT WE ARE SAYING, is that its a pretty risky game to trade away a shit-ton of prospects for FOUR-rentals: Lee, Cantu, Molina, Guzman. None of which you will probably have next year. NOT to mention, all of them which pretty much DEFINE the word MEDIOCRE (except for LEE).
Cantu with his 16 errors. Molina with his five jacks and .298 opb, Guzman is slow and had the 4th worst fielding percentage of all shortstops in baseball last year.
But hey man, its your division to win. Feel free to fuck up your chances anyway you’d like.

I'm not going to pretend to know how good any team's farm system is.
But the sheer number of moves the Rangers have made this season is breathtaking. The team is showing absolutely no fear in going after what they need to win. We can harp all day about mortgaging their future, but it’s undeniable that they’ve put together one of the more formidable teams in the majors. The road ahead looks bumpy for the Angels if they want to overtake this team.
