OT: Cupie and the A's Friday, July 9th

My family and I are going to the Oakland game Friday night.  This is our first trip The Mausoleum.  I have a few question for fellow HH peeps.

1.  Anyone else going to the game?

2. Should I buy tickets before the game or are walk ups cool?

3. The family and I are in staying in San Francisco (proper) should we take BART or just drive?

4. Any FAMILY recommendations for San Francisco?

Thanks in advance...  Cupie's July 9th photo essay to follow at a later date.

well...

From going in June and last season I know…
1. We always get our tickets by walking up. Although we pay for bleachers and then move because our tickets are never checked.
2. I drive in from Davis, but instead of paying the $15 for parking we park at the BART station for FREE and use the walkway which connects the two.
3. Our guys have been extremely friendly when approached pre-game.

Enjoy! Fans aren’t as bad as everyone makes them out to be in my dozen experiences the past 4 years.

Can't hate the game gotta love it man.

Recommendations for SF

1. You have to do Alcatraz—great trip and educational experience
2. the Embarcadero (sp?)—the kids love it, and take the trolley there if you can

I may or may not be at the game....

Walk ups are cool, Oakland never sells out. You’ll see as many Angels fans there as A’s fans. Depending on the age of your kids, San Francisco can be great. You should certainly tour Fisheman’s Whorf, that’s great for all ages. If you make a weekend out of it, Alcatraz isn’t bad. The PF Changs in San Francisco is my 2nd favorite outside of the one in San Diego. There are tons of good hotels, if you’re looking for something downtown and close proximity to everything, King’s Cross Hotel isn’t bad, and it’s affordable.

We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.

Neither did I. Apparently, my life is incomplete.

Perhaps I should start a list of my favorite Applebee’s. No, Maybe Chili’s. At least I have been to one of those. Somebody is probably already doing a list for In’N’Out.

You guys might like that one that Reagins uses off the 91, but I live smack between 2, both within walking distance. They rule my world.

I don't really know, but it's the A's....

You should be able to get any tickets you want…

With Billy Beane selling them to you personally after begging you to watch the A’s in the first place.

Any time you think you have the game conquered the game will turn around and punch you right in the nose.

Sit near the bullpen

Living in Sacramento, I usually only get to see the halos when they’re in Oak-town. I usually take the BART in, it’s very easy. (parking at the colosseum is $17). Seriously, you have to pay seventeen bucks to park your car… In Oakland! They should pay me to feel comfortable about leaving my car in Oakland for three hours.

Also, pay attention to the news, if the verdict on the BART shooting goes in favor of the cop, stuff may get violent in the east bay.

Don’t worry about A’s fans, they’re not from Oakland. They try to act like it, but they’re really from Los Gatos…not mention that there will only be about 5,000 of them there.

Bring a sweatshirt, sit near the Angels bullpen, and have fun!

From memory..

I went to a game up there a couple years ago so from memory…

2. I bought before but only because I wanted really good seats. Obviously walk-ups won’t be an issue if you just want to be in the park.
3. BART for sure. Cheap and easy and you don’t have to deal with traffic and parking.
4. We’ve been absolutely DYING to get back up to San Fran to check out the newest additions to the Academy of Sciences museum in Golden Gate Park. We spent a few hours there last time we were in the city, but since then they’ve added a 4 story rainforest and a living roof. Sick.

by ReggieBullits on Jul 6, 2010 2:14 PM PDT reply actions

Academy of Sciences is PANTHER

The rainforest alone is worth it, but it also has an aquarium and a planetarium, as well as a bunch of other exhibits.

Damn you are one insensitive turd!

How could you be that way to people who are less fortuneate than yourself. Do you know what they’ve been through? No. So why call them bums????

Don’t you know the politically correct term is homeless.

When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

Do YOU know what they have been through?

No? So why assume that their circumstances are the result of misfortune?

I would suggest that most A’s fans, every day, have a choice to improve their lot in life and NOT be an A’s fan. That they remain A’s fans means that they have made a choice to continue being an A’s fan. That is not being “less fortunate”. That is choosing to be a bum.

Answers

1. You, your family and about 12 A’s fans
2. Best purchase in advance, they haven’t had a walk-up purchase in 11 years, I doubt they still staff the box office at game time
3. Police escort seems prudent
4. Family recommendation? Don’t go to Oakland

(Have a great time, by the way, I’m just jealous)

by The Limey on Jul 6, 2010 2:24 PM PDT reply actions

I would go on the weekend if i did not have kids (damn i hate them now)

2) buy tickets before so you dont have to walk around that shit hole to the box office. it is a friday and if no give-away tickets will be available, but a rip off.
3) Fridays in the bayArea are more like a parking lot. You can use car pull but that still will not help. If it is a night game leave early get to game for batting practice and to beat traffic on bart, in a car traffic starts at 3pm and over the bay bridge it last until 10. You will get back late when you take bart but it is best bet if your close to a bart station. Parking at the shit hole is alot too but if you have a large family it maybe cheaper then bart.
4) Go to the golden gate park. the Academy of Science is nice but packed on the weekends. i recommend taking a tour of the city that stops at alot of locations, one of those double decker buses. and if you want to travel go to santa cruz boardwalk.

I want to set up a meet up on the weekend tail gate at the a’s game
have a good time and dont eat the food at in Oakland it is crap get a foot long at subway

Bart

17 bucks in Oakland sucks. We went in May to the SF/Oak game, and I have to say it was like a parking lot coming in from San Jose.
Like they said, you can probably walk up for tickets. That place is old, ugly, dirty, and downright scary with SF fans in it. I think against anyone else it is probably quiet. You should have a good experience. Sitting above the bullpen is cool. Especially when the knuckler is working.
As for SF, I like the Fisherman’s Wharf, you can drive past the new stadium in SF, it is a fun experience seeing the piers.

The only bad things about SF/Oak, the whole bay area is the self important fools that are on the road. Driving sucks there. If you do take the wharf trip, be careful of the outside lane, cause those fool cable cars in the outside lane have no problem bashing into you. We have had to run red lights on several occasions so as to not get bashed into.

Hope you enjoy everything up there

Head to the aquarium on fishermans wharf

They have a couple tunnels you walk through where the water is all around you. Its really cool- especially for kids- when the fish swim over you and you feel like you are underwater.
Chinatown is fun, especially if you go for breakfast and get some dim sum its delicious.
Alcatraz is awesome- go on the night tour, it is way worth the extra couple bucks for the views of SF at night.
Ive always enjoyed old san francisco too- the mission is a pretty cool thing to see (although the neighborhood isnt great)
Have fun its a cool place to visit

I'm thinking

about going to the Saturday game. I’m in Vegas so it’s gonna be like a road trip. I’d like to be on the Angels dugout area but I have to study the seating chart to do so.

There was a good thread on McCovey Chronicles about this

Locals tips
I also highly recomend the BART when going to the coliseum. There is amazing food everywhere so look up on Yelp for whatever area you are going to be in.

This isn't 'Nam. This is bowling. There are rules.

...

1. I’m going friday night.

2. Walk up are definitely doable. Last time I was there 75% of the stadium was empty. You can pretty much get seats wherever you want.

3. BART is the best option for travel. It’ll be about $10 dollars or so round-trip from downtown.

4. Golden gate park is always a good experience, especially now that the Academy of Sciences and De young museum is there. There’s also the SF Exploratorium, which is a hands-on science museum so to speak. Kids seem to love it. Naturally fisherman’s wharf and Chinatown are always cool too.

Take the BART

Bay Area traffic is nightmarish.

by Teh Phil on Jul 6, 2010 7:54 PM PDT reply actions

Stubhub or craigslist

You should be able to get sweet tickets for face or less day of game or 1 day before. If not, walk up. You want the MVP seats directly behind home or 2-3 sections in either direction. Go for the lowest row number, behind home plate I think it starts at 11 or 12 due to diamond club. $45 for these primo seats is a steal. Don’t get anything beyond row 25 and don’t go beyond either dugout towards the outfield. If you can’t get the sweet seats, most others will do, but if you sit in the bleachers you run the risk of sitting next to some douche bag A’s fans.

by LosAngel on Jul 7, 2010 1:35 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

Correction

rows 1-20 are MVP. I know it seems kinda obvious to say get the best seats, but a little leg work and a little cash at the last minute will score you an experience you can’t get at the big A unless you take a second out on your house. As for food, if you want to eat there, go for the Saags or check out the. Bbq place on field level in right field, roughly around the foul pole. The pork plate is pretty decent. Other than that, it’s standard ballpark garbage. If the giants are in town, I highly recommend watching a game there. Beautiful stadium, great experience.

It may be best to avoid Oakland this weekend...

and attend the September series at the Coliseum instead. The city of Oakland is bracing for riots pending the outcome of the BART shooting trial.

no one goes to the games so

it should be safe there
the stadium is right off the freeway so
if there are riots stay off bart
the riots are weak up here and will be in downtown miles away from the shit hole they call a ball park
