Trade rumors are swirling and Upton's name has come up a few times over at MLBTR, which essentially means.....nothing, nothing at all. But if we're going to talk about bringing in help from the outside to get our offense running on all cylinders, Upton's name should be among those tossed around.
BJ is a mega talented outfielder, who has seen his playing time diminish recently because of a lack of effort on his part. This isn't the first time we've seen him benched for this reason either. So needless to say, if Upton is available, it's a "trade at your own risk" scenario, similar to what we did with Scott Kazmir, hoping he had figured it all out. Talent doesn't always manifest into performance, again, as we've seen with Scott Kazmir.
However, bringing Upton in, would theoretically make our outfield defense much better, he has great range and a good arm in my own observation. He has the potential to bat .300, hit 30 HR's a year and steal 40 bags to go along with the defense. He just hasn't put it all together yet in one season. To be honest, it sounds eerily like Scott Kazmir all over again and so far, that hasn't worked out for us, but if we're going to discuss 30 year olds in Kansas City having career years then we might as well discuss 25 year olds with immense talent.
The Rays are deep in outfielders and pitching, so it's just a guess but I think that if they were to trade Upton, they'd be in the market for Carlos Peña's replacement and also a DH. Perhaps Mark Trumbo, Hideki Matsui, Will Smith and cash (they do need to try and resign Carl Crawford in the offseason) would do the trick. For Tampa Bay, this would give them the DH they need this season, a solid backup option for Peña in the coming years, a solid young lefty arm and it would clear room for their super prospect, Desmond Jennings. For the Angels, we could slide Abreu into the DH slot, Rivera into RF and Upton in LF/CF with Hunter.
He'd probably bat in the bottom half of our lineup for the time being, but would certainly be capable of working his way into a lead off or 2 or 3 hitter. He'd probably be our main base stealing threat, a solid power threat, his defense could save a bunch of runs and I think he'd do well under Hunter's tutelage.
