Peter Bourjos Called Up

According to Tom Krasovic, the Angels have called up speedy outfielder Peter Bourjos (Krasovic's Twitter Link and his article on the move).

UPDATE Confirmed: at the LA Angels Insider.com site. Corresponding roster move has not yet been announced. Bourjos will join the team before Tuesday's game in Baltimore.

Now new questions arise. How much time will he get in the outfield? Could he be a crucial part in toppling the Rangers?

However much time he gets up here or how important he will be remains to be seen, but many Angel fans, including me, have been calling for this for days and seems that our demands have been met. In my opinion, it'll be better than crossing our fingers and hoping Juan Rivera catches a ball out there.

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Is Sosh planning on platooning Abreu/Matsui?

by linkbruin on Aug 1, 2010 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

That would be a weird platoon

Considering both are lefties. Career-wise, Matsui has been fine against lefties, but this season he seems to be guessing when they’re on the mound. Abreu was fine against lefties last year, but is abysmal this season.

Who knows? I just know that I’m going to be awfully excited the first time I see Bourjos run something down in the OF.

Yeah I hate both of their bats against lefties

I’m guessing Bourjos is probably going to play against lefties with Juan DH’ing. And Juan probably playing the field with Matsui DH’ing against righties.

by linkbruin on Aug 2, 2010 1:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe Matsui is a goner?

There really should be a platoon here, with Juan playing against lefties and Abreu/Matsui alternating days off against lefties.

He could just rotate through the outfield.

He’s young. Give all those old timers a break. Let’s see what he can do. None of this Reggie Willits stuff. Pinch running, late game defensive replacement, etc.

I want to see him play everyday!

Willits has kinda redeemed himself this year.

.355 OBP isn’t great, but sadly it’s high for this team. 14 runs scored in only 95 AB. 12 BB and only 11 K. Plus, he looks amazing in the OF compared to our old men.

If the Angels call him up and don't play him at least 4 games a week

then IMO this is stupid just like all the times they did the exact same thing to Wood. If he has a good game against a stud pitcher and then rides pine for a week, I think myself and a lot of other Angels fans will be upset.

Good Luck Peter! We’ll all be rooting for you!

2 PAs since the ASB… just sayin…

by Rev Halofan on Aug 1, 2010 10:33 PM PDT reply actions

No reason to do so

They haven’t really replaced him with anyone. If they had picked up a genuine 3B in the meantime I’d assume it was over, but no rational person considers Callaspo, Izturis or Frandsen to be a first-string solution.

The rosters go to 40 in one month but the team might have a plan for him in the offseason and one more chance next Spring. After all that has been invested in him, getting him a hypnotist might be a good place to start, get some of that regressive mental energy out of his brain.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

by Rev Halofan on Aug 1, 2010 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe

Or maybe he makes Izturis trade bait in the offseason. Izturis is signed for about $7M over 2011-12 and very affordable, but we know his durability is in question. He’d be good depth for some team, while Callaspo gives the Angels much the same depth, but in his arb years through 2013.

Alternatively, it gives the team the chance to trade Kendrick (I don’t see Aybar as available) with Izturis moving to 2B and Callaspo the understudy for the middle and left side of the infield.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

by George Kaplan on Aug 1, 2010 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

All of these trade scenarios imply that Wood will become a 3B.

Not simply a replacement-level 3B, but a “genuine” or “first-string” 3B, as you say. Which Callaspo, Izturis, and Frandsen, as you say, are not.

Wood cannot even eat the garnish on the plates of Callaspo, Izturis and Frandsen right now — yet we want to find more ABs for Wood so he can replace the above?

This all seems founded on wishes and dreams. Wood is done with us. Yes, they have replaced them with Callaspo, Izturis and Frandsen — because in 400+ plate appearances, he simply could not hit a major league pitch.

by Turks Teeth on Aug 2, 2010 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Assuming you're right, then:

Why hasn’t the team DFA’s him already? What possible reason could there be for him to still be on the Angel roster unless the team was going to take another attempt to get him on track for 2011?

It isn’t as if the team would have to write off a huge salary or it is afraid that Wood would be picked up by the Rangers and blossom in the pennant drive.

The only conclusion I can come to is that the Angels currently feel that Wood can be fixed (not like a dog) and thus are keeping him around. Reagins hasn’t traded for or signed a “true” 3B, leaving the team to play with a out-of-position middle infielder, just as it had before. If I’m Wood, I’m feeling frustrated, but not fired.

Hopefully Wood is history (in ever sense of the word)...

…and he gets an equal chance to prove himself like Wood was given, especially since the season is in the tank (most likely).

Also, since I don’t think we’re going to be able to compete with THE big boy(s) when it comes Crawford, we need to find other alternatives.

Now is as a good of a time as any to know how much of the OF picture Pete will play next year…

I can't see Red Sox or the Yankees or the Phillies going after Crawford

Yankees are pretty much set with Gardner, Granderson is signed til ’13, and Swisher for another season.

Red Sox are probably resigning Ellsbury (unless his injury makes him ineffective) and they have Drew and Cameron for another season. Unless they feel they need more OF depth, I don’t see them signing Crawford, especially when Werth (also a free agent next season) would come cheaper.

Phillies are all set with Ibanez, Victorino and Brown.

Please, you know if the Yankees can get Crawford (and they will)...

…they will find somewhere to put Swisher or Gardner.

Swisher is having a career year in every single offensive category. Yes, every one. He might not finish with 35 HR so that will be the only one he doesn’t exceed.

Like with Figgy, is he the player you are seeing now or the one he has been his whole career (albeit not 10+ years). They’ll trade him high if they get Crawford, and would be brilliant in doing so.

And Gardner vs Crawford? I didn’t need to waste time typing this, did I?

It’s the Yankees. They Never™ Ever™ sit pat. If they can improve one player by a few % they will. Crawford is twice the player.

All three of those outfields are pretty flawed. BENCH MATSUI

This guy Matsui only tries to hit a homerun with his hard swing trying to hit it out to right field. Thats why everyone pitches him outside and high he swings and falls out of the box 3/4 of the time and never tries to go opposite field

by Angelfan27 on Aug 1, 2010 11:51 PM PDT reply actions

Good news for 2011, hopefully good news for 2010

We absolutely need Bourjos to be the starting CFer next year, with Hunter shifting to right, so that MLB’s worst OF defense can stop sabotaging the rotation. Getting his first 150 PAs out of the way will help him be an offensive non-suck next year.

I’m guessing/hoping he gets all the starts vs. lefties, with Matsui & Abreu (mostly Matsui) taking a seat. This way we can also put Matsui on waivers and maybe get something back for him along with a little payroll relief.

If the team falls out of contention (which I don’t think it will), Bourjos should get all the starts.

by mattwelch on Aug 1, 2010 11:58 PM PDT reply actions

not yet

I say trade Abreu and put Bourjous in right and hopefully sign Crawford. I don’t think the Angels should move Torii to right yet. Don’t get me wrong Bourjous is the fastest guy in the organization but I don’t think Torii wants his job taken in CF just quite yet. Torii is still great in CF for his age but if he starts to struggle next year then they will probably move him to RF and Bourjous to CF

"Great for his age"

My Dad is great for his age in CF too, but he’s 51. Torii WAS great in CF, now he’s about average, maybe a bit below. He’s lost a step. I’d move him to left (I just don’t think he has the arm for right field) and he’d instantly become an above average left fielder.

Can his ego take it? I don’t know. I’d like to think it could. Our best outfield defense would be Torii in left, Bourjos in center, with either Rivera or Abreu in right.

It’s irrelevant. Actually, that’s not true – it’s relevant because it’s the biggest reason why Hunter’s defense has declined this season. Whether or not his defense is good for someone of his age doesn’t matter, because his defense isn’t good, period.

His range would play much better in left field right now.

THAT BEING SAID, um, wow. Does this mean that Juancho is benched? I notice that Willits has been getting more and more starts? This is a pretty hasty move by the Angels that I like. I feel as if this team sometimes has waaaay too much patience with players.

But mostly about the upgrade in defense. I’d like to think we’re all realists about his offense. The kid is not going to hit much right away. He might be decent against lefties, but I would expect some pretty overmatched at bats against any righty with a clue.

It’s fine, though. He’ll get good experience, and we won’t have to watch balls drop in front of Rivera/Abreu five times a game.

Bourjos will get plenty of playing time. How?

- Matsui will only be DHing against righties.
- Abreu needs to rest his legs and will need some time at DH and the bench.
- Hunter’s bat must be in the lineup if we want to catch Texas. When he’s rested Bourjos is a better option than Willits.
- Bourjos is faster than Willits, and better defesnviely, which will mean more pinch running duties and late inning replacements.

Why does everybody seem to assume (hope) that he will be an everyday starter?

My experience is that guys on their first real call up usually stink…even the good ones. The best we can hope for is that we catch lightening in a bottle the first few weeks before the scouting reports find the inevitable holes in his swing. My guess is that he will be a spot starter/pinch runner/defensive replacement. Essentially replacing Reggie. If the FO/Soth thought that he could have been that much of a difference, don’t you think he would already be here? Our offense has been running through the poppy fields outside the Emerald City all season.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think you guys are being unrealistically optimistic here.

I don't see that

There are very few comments that mention his offense as something to be excited about. I don’t think any but the most delusional are expecting more than a minimal offensive contribution from him.

This move was done for defensive purposes, and defense/speed doesn’t slump. So yes, he’ll be a downgrade offensively from whoever is sitting (although he may not even be that bad if he puts Matsui or Abreu on the bench against lefties). But he’ll definitely be a HUGE upgrade defensively, and I think that’s what people are anticipating. At least, that seems to be the general theme of the comments in this thread.

Not always

Napoli was a monster his first month. True that Kendrick, Aybar, Morales all struggled at first, and Wood struggled and never came out of it. But look how other teams have done introducing speedy CF:

Jacoby Ellsbury hit .353 in his first 33 games at age 23. Julio Borbon hit .312 last year, playing 46 games at age 23. They were a bit above their heads, and the league caught up to them.

But we’ve got a speedy 23 year old CF too, who has been red hot. He’s as likely to continue that hot streak as he is to struggle. Who knows what will happen, but I like that the Angels are willing to roll the dice.

I expect Bourjos to play fantastic defense and steal a few bases

I don’t expect him to be an everyday starter or the savior for this team this year. It’s a great organizational move that makes us MUCH better in areas that we are weak and it’s all the more exciting because he’s one of our own that we’ve kept an eye on for quite some time.

I’m expecting him to give all three of our OF’s regular rest, struggle a bit at the plate and be pinch hit for late in games that he starts. I expect on the days that he’s not starting, Mike Scioscia only intends to play Torii, Bobby and Juan about 7 innings. These guys aren’t young and we need all three of their bats in the lineup. We’re one of them to get injured, you can forget about contending this year.

This is pretty swesome

I was at the Bees vs. Beavers game yesterday (game 1 of the double header) and I watch bourjos knock a lead off single stretched into a double, home run, single and draw a walk. Plus he grabbed a fly ball near the warning track like it was a can of corn pop up, and he caught a ball in right right-center. He got there way before Trumbo did (who is crazy slow).

During the entire game I kept telling my fiancée that we’d see bourjos in an angels uniform soon enough. I guess I was right.

Also, I got video of a trumbo double and home run. I’ll post them if I can figure out how.

Bourjos Debut

Righty on the mound tomorrow, MLB debut on Wed vs Matusz?

Probably makes the most sense, I doubt he will play vs the righty tomorrow.

Pretty excited, hopefully they can get him in there 4 times a week.

RE: Bourjos callup...

I remain skeptically optimistic. I tend to follow along with “Moondoggy” in that Bourjos should be brought in slowly. If he’s comfy, then turn him loose. Don’t want the second coming of Brandon Wood OR Dallas MacPherson.

GO PETER, GO HALOS!

I love this team.

Bourjos will be a significant upgrade defensively

But I don’t expect him to hit more than .220 in his time with the Angels this year. He might go on to hit something like .250 next year, but he is not the answer to all our problems right now, unlike what many people seem to believe.

by nicolasville on Aug 2, 2010 9:51 AM PDT reply actions

tony gywnn junior was a positive WAR purely because of his defense. If bourjos can match his offense

we have a solid option for the rest of the year.
If he does better than gywnn (which he will because of: superior power, more success at the minor league level, and not being in san diego’s stadium) then we have a solid piece. and one that will develop into hopefully our next leadoff hitter.

I like this move.

IT shows me they are not folding this season and they know they have a chance too. Bourjous will help regardless of what anybody says. He will be excellent defense taking a HUGE amount of pressure for Hunter. He will know he doesn’t have to cover 90% of the OF anymore. This move will do nothing but help us.

It also shows that they want to know what they have in Bourjos so...

they can better gauge just how hard they should go after CCrawford.

Exactly, even if this kid hits .200 in the lineup he will still be an offensive upgrade because of his speed

BaseballAmerica Prospect (weekly) HotSheet

LINKIE

No. 4 (of 13) Peter Bourjos, CF Angels

Team: Triple-A Salt Lake (Pacific Coast)
Age: 23
Why He’s Here: .438/.500/.781 (14-for-32), 2 HR, 5 2B, 8 RBIs, 12 R, 3 BB, 6 SO, 0-for-1 SB
The Scoop: No prospect has had a better month of July than Bourjos, who has hit .445/.484/.714 in a 26-game stretch, collecting a hit in all but three games and 10 times snagging three or more in one contest. Bourjos’ slugging percentage for the month is nearly double that of his work from April through June. He has a staggering 53 hits for the month—with two games still to play—which if you multiply by five months in the season gives you 265 hits. It’s enough to make Ichiro’s head spin!

If Bourjos in August settles in somewhere between his incendiary July and his first-three-months numbers (.255/.313/.383), then it would be a fitting way to close a positive developmental year for the gifted defensive center fielder.

I say, if you are bringing him up, let him play. Hunter needs to suck it up and move to LF and let the young gun do the heavy running in the OF. Hunter’s hitting should only improve with the lightening of the workload in the OF.

The only way he's not better than Willits is plate discipline

Bourjos hasn’t shown the same ability to take a walk or work the count like Willits. But his ceiling is definitely far above Reggie’s.

by Gorbachav5 on Aug 2, 2010 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Which is why he will fit in better with this team than Willits has. But, if he ever does learn to be more patient he will be a stellar lead-off hitter. If not, well 9 batter is alright.

by angelskid2210 on Aug 2, 2010 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

It took Figgy 6+ years to develop the plate discipline for leadoff

And he’s a rare case – a lot of guys never develop that kind of batting eye. Not that it’s impossible, but I’m not expecting Bourjos to turn into a walk machine all of a sudden. If it happens, it will take awhile.

Figgins

I guess he developed it and lost it one year later.

by Robviously on Aug 2, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

To be fair

He didn’t lose a lot of his plate discipline. His walk rate is still very good. He is striking out a bit more. Mostly he’s lost a step of speed and he’s lost any ability to drive the ball with authority. His slugging percentage is awful. Throw in a bit of bad luck and you’ve got a terrible season.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him bounce back a bit, but 2009 was probably his last good season.

Defending maligned chants since 2009

by Gorbachav5 on Aug 2, 2010 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think he's lost speed yet

Figgins has stolen 27 bases in 35 attempts, a better rate than last year’s 42/59. What he’s lost is the ability to hit the ball with authority.

by RallyMonkey5 on Aug 3, 2010 6:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, his SBs are better this year

Maybe it was a one-year blip. His baserunning value was pretty consistent throughout his career, even when he had down years with the bat. Then they went way down last year, even though he had his best hitting season (OBP-wise). They’re down again this year, although not quite as much.

Defending maligned chants since 2009

by Gorbachav5 on Aug 3, 2010 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

I think he can sustain a .360 OBP purely on his ability to drive the ball and his speed, but anything above that wouldn’t come for another 5 years. His best season in terms of walks was last season with a BB/KK of .636, which is slightly above average this season.

So I think a 1:1.75 BB:K ratio is the best we’ll see out of him. If his bat, defense, and speed stays consistent, then he’ll emerge as an above average outfielder.

Few things terrorize an opposing defense like speed. Speed kills.

Just making contact with the ball freaks out the fielders. It’s a joy to watch.

Gorgeous Bourjos!!!

I look forward to seeing what the kid’s got. I like the idea of him getting 2 or 3 starts a week, alternating DHing Rivera and Matsui on RHP vs. LHP. We need to keep Rivera in the lineup right now, but I’d rather have Bourjos’ defense than Matsui’s offense right now.

However, I’d also like to add that Willits has been better this year on offense. It seems like he has been forever written off by most HHers, but he’s definitely contributed this season, and shows way more passion than many of our regulars.

I love Willits

I don’t know why. Maybe he fills the diminutive scrappy white guy void in my life that never got filled when Eckstein left. He does have value as an on base guy and as a plus baserunner (although his stealing instincts aren’t that great). Plus I always liked Willits’ story.

Hey

Remember that time the Angels showed Glaus and Eckstein the door so that they could sign Orlando Cabrera and let Dallas McPherson play 3B? Wow, what a great moment in team history that was. [/sarcasm] Seriously, it’s amazing the Angels ever won anything given Bill Stoneman’s complete ignorance on how to build an offense. How many homeruns is Troy Glaus up to now?

I like Willits a lot too. He’s a a great player to have. Probably not good enough to start (unless you’ve got big production from other parts of the line-up), but great at getting on base and very good on defense. I like him as our no.4 OF.

Another luminous player!

To rifle the fires of this illustrious team of Los Angels. This team my favourite team, I study all matches and Peter Bourjos is my favourite player. I study all his at bat and Angel fire. In outfield he cover all the grass as he have done for luminous Salt Lake appearances with a glove like magical. Peter Bourjos is Number One.

Reminder

Reggie Willits hit .327 / .448 / .426 in his last full season at AAA Salt Lake. I’ve tried, but I just can’t get excited about Bourjos. I’m as frustrated with the outfield defense as anyone, but I think this kid can do the organization more good by working on his plate discipline in AAA than shagging balls in the bigs. I can live awhile longer with Juan Rivera.

by Suboptimal on Aug 2, 2010 3:06 PM PDT reply actions

Willits

Willits put up good numbers in his first (and only) full season as a big leaguer.

Bourjos will have to learn how to face major league pitching at some point. No time like the present.

by Robviously on Aug 2, 2010 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

In the scouts eyes

there is no comparing the two players. Bourjos was our #2 rated prospect this year by BA – Willits never sniffed the top ten. Bourjos is bigger, faster, hits with more power. Better tools. I like Willits, but he was never the apple of any scouts eye.

Scouts seem to have a weakness for this type of player

Tall, athletic guys who make it out of the box in a hurry. There are just too many guys like that kicking around the league who just can’t hit. Remember how excited people were about Carlos Gomez? Sure he’s fast, but what anyone ever saw in his bat is beyond me.

A cheap poorman's Crawford

He doesn’t have nearly the base stealing instincts or the bat of Crawford. Defensively they are comparable, but Bourjos still has a lot of things to work on.

His numbers and style compare very similarly to Austin Jackson.

Look how well he is doing for the Tigers. And he does strike out a lot. I bet Pete the Fleet can comp him well, while striking out even less.

There’s our answer. Which means we’re still subjected to Rivera’s lazy, nonchalant defense in LF. They should have moved him to right and Torii to LF. But what do I know? Interested to hear some of our more experienced uzr guys talk about this move.
