2011 Angels Free Agents and Contracts
So I wanted to see how next season would shape up, what we can afford to do, and what we couldn't. While searching for contracts, I found a good site that has all the contracts of every player in the majors posted. I am not 100% sure if all this information is correct, so let me know if I made any mistakes.
Players that we have under contract next season:
Torii Hunter: $18 million. FA in 2013.
Bobby Abreu: $9 million. Vesting option in 2012, guaranteed option if Abreu gets 550 plate appearances in 2011 or 1,000 PA in 2010-2011 (he currently has 485 on 8/12/2010).
Dan Haren: $12.75 million. Club option in 2013.
Scott Kazmir: $12 million. Club option in 2011.
Joel Pineiro: $8 million. FA in 2012.
Ervin Santana: $8 million. Club option in 2013.
Juan Rivera: $5.25 million. FA in 2012.
Fernando Rodney: $5.5 million. FA in 2012.
Maicer Izturis: $3.1 million. FA in 2013.
Players in an option season:
Brian Fuentes: Vesting Option in 2011, guaranteed option if he finishes 55 games. If he doesn't get the option, I believe he goes into free agency.
Contracts under payroll obligation:
Gary Matthews Jr.: $11 million. Done after 2011.
Players with expiring contracts but cannot go into free agency (Player: What they made in 2010):
Jered Weaver: $4.265 million. Scott Boras client.
Mike Napoli: $3.6 million
Erick Aybar: $2.05 million
Howie Kendrick: $1.75 million
Jeff Mathis: $1.3 million
Kendry Morales: $.7 million. Scott Boras client.
Alberto Callaspo: $.46 million
Other players with expiring contracts: Reggie Willits, Brian Stokes, Matt Palmer, Jason Bulger, Kevin Jepsen, Brandon Wood, Ryan Budde, Bobby Wilson, Anthony Ortega, Chris Pettit
I'm not sure how resigning these players work. Does the organization and the player go through contact discussions in the off season? What happens if they can't work out a deal? Do they go into arbitration?
Players going into free agency (Player: What they made in 2010):
Hideki Matsui: $6 million
Scot Shields: $5.35 million
Players called up in 2010 with Minor League contracts: Robb Quinlan, Kevin Frandsen, Cory Aldridge, Trevor Bell, Peter Bourjos, Bobby Cassevah, Michael Kohn, Francisco Rodriguez, Freddy Sandoval, Rich Thompson, Mark Trumbo.
*Players in bold represent likely candidates to made the 40-man roster on 2011 Opening Day.
2010 Opening Day payroll: $121,000,000 approximately
2011 payroll with players under contract: $92,600,000 approximately
We have about $29 million (Moreno willing) to spend on free agents and our players with expiring contracts in 2011. Will we be able to sign our big name players (Weaver, Morales) to multi-year contracts? If so, I believe Weaver would get no less than 11 million a year and Morales gets a moderate raise, due to injury (but with Scott Boras, who knows). If Weaver and Morales go into arbitration, then we'll have maybe about $17 million to spend next season, if we also include the money we spend on depth players.
Our needs include a closer and/or bullpen depth, an outfielder and possibly an everyday third baseman (via trade). Will we actually have the money to spend fill our holes? What are the chances that we don't sign Weaver to a multi-year contract? If we don't, should we pick up a free agent starter to fill the hole left by Weaver in 2012? Which starters would be in our price range?

You honestly think Weaver's going to go from 4MM to 11?
Weave’s gonna land around 7 million, which is great for a pitcher in arb. So you can add 3 million more to this total. Brian Fuentes option vests if he FINISHES 55 games, not appearances, which he’s just about guaranteed not to do. You also completely ignore the 5.25 million we wont be paying Justin Speier after this season, so throw another 5 million in there.
Your figures are all off, just go to COTS. All in all, we should have about 26 million to play with. After arbitration, you can expect this to be about 15 million to spend before we’re at a payroll similar to this year. We don’t need a 3B, we landed Callaspo and have Izzy, and don’t tell me they play 2B unless you plan on trading Howie, which you didn’t mention in your post.
The only real spots we’re looking at filling is bullpen and possibly OF/DH. Just throwing randomass guesses out there, I think we’ll bring in a LHRP Scott Downs at 4 million a year for 3 years and Adam Dunn at 4 year with an option for a 5th at around 12 million a year.
The 3-4-5 spots in the lineup would be Hunter, Dunn and Morales, which is much better than what we have right now. Downs would serve as our setup man and lefty specialist.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
Me too, and we'd also have to somehow shed Rivera's contract.
But it’s looking more and more likely we’ll see at least one bad defender in the OF next year. No way around it really, unless we land Crawford.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
We can just bench Rivera.
He’d be a much cheaper bench warmer than GMJ, and a bigger offensive threat.
But I don’t really want Dunn. If we get Crawford, great. If not, I still think we need to split DH between Napoli and Abreu primarily. I don’t want to stock pile any more aging OFers.

I think Sosh would rather
Nab Crawford than Dunn and you can’t have both unless Bourjos isn’t starting next (which we’re pretty sure he will be).
Can you imagine a batting order like that?
Aybar
Abreu
Hunter
Dunn
Morales
Crawford
Napoli
Kendrick
Callaspo
I'll be stunned if Napoli is on our roster next season
He and Soth obviously do not get along. Via an arbitration raise, he will be overpaid for the number of games/AB’s he currently plays. We can not continue to carry 3 catchers indefinitely. The only way I can potentially see Naps on the roster is if he is the primary DH, p/t catcher/1b. This means no Dunn. Dunn does not want to DH…he ain’t coming to Anaheim.
Napoli/Soth = oil/water.

I definitely sense that.....though I think Napoli stays, it just means no Dunn.
He should get plenty of AB’s, catching 4 out every 10 games, DHing another 2 and 1B for 1. He’ll probably be in the lineup 70% of the time. The biggest issue next year for me is going to be DH, and who mans it.
If we manage to sign Crawford and Rivera is traded, which seems possible, I think we’d see Abreu handle DH 7 out of every 10 games and RF for another 2. This leaves 3/10 games open for a new DH, I think we’ll rotate Hunter into that spot for a game and Naps for 2.
Just so long as we keep our boppers (Hunter, Abreu, Morales, Napoli) in the lineup 70% or more of the time I think we should be good.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
you are giving Napoli way too many at-bats
considering what is happening this season with him. If Kendry hadn’t gone down opening a spot for Nap then I doubt he’d have half the amount of at-bats he has right now. which sucks.

What is "happening this season with him?"
He’s most likely going to have career highs in HR and RBI. He’s hitting just 1 hundreth below his career AVG. Also, his defensive numbers are all improved. Why wouldn’t you want a guy like that in the lineup as much as possible? What more do you want from a catcher? There’s only one Joe Mauer.

you misunderstood me completely
when I said “what is happening this season” I was talking about Sosh going out of his way to bench him. I wasn’t knocking his performance at all, I think he should be in the lineup 4 out of 5 games. what I meant was that Scioscia obviously prefers to not put him in the lineup if he has another option. when I siad “which sucks” at the end of my post I was saying it sucks that he wouldn’t have gotten the playing time if it hadn’t been for injuries to other guys.
to start the season Nap was the backup to Mathis, which was puzzling considering it had mostly been close to a split the past couple seasons. if Mathis and Kendry hadn’t been hurt I think its pretty clear that Nap would probably have less at-bats than he had last season. for whatever reason Sosh would rather get creative instead of just playing Nap (ex: playing Howie at 1st recently even though Mathis is catching).
I love me some Naps, and as long as he’s healthy think he should be in the lineup just about daily.

My bad
I’m totally witchoo. Love me some Naps. Don’t forget, Sosh also started WILSON ahead of Naps, and would have continued to do so if Bobby hadn’t gotten knockedthefugout.
Sosh’s Naps hate is so bizarre. Late last season, the word on the streets was that it was because Naps was not executing defensive fundamentals. But then we saw him work his butt off in spring training. Even still, Sosh chose to start Mathis AND Wilson ahead of Naps.
Now, in the season, we’ve seen Mathis’ defense slip to embarrassing levels, and his offense has continued to be nonexistent. On the other hand, Napoli has career best numbers on both offense and defense, and has raised his value by filling in at 1B admirably.
It’s got to be a personality conflict. But I have never seen any evidence of Napoli not being a hard worker or good teammate. Since Sosh won’t tell us, I guess I’ll have to wait for the Lord Almighty to reveal all things to all men.

maybe
Naps banged Sosh’s daughter. and if Sosh doesn’t have a daughter, maybe he seduced his wife. those are the only things that make sense.

Why should we conttinue to use Naps at 1B?
Morales will need the bare minimum number of days off. He’s still young and limber, and has no real history of injury aside from this fluke accident. Izturis is the kind of guy who needs a day or two off every week, not Morales.
Naps should just split between DH and catcher. And if I had my way, I’d release Wilson, trade Mathis, and call up Conger.

First things first, the payroll on that team would rival the Red Sox, so no effing way.
Secondly you’re outta your mind if you think Crawford will bat 6th while Erick Aybar bats leadoff, that’s just stupid. Third, Scioscia seems pleased with batting Abreu before Aybar, not the other way around.
I know it’s all hypothetical.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
He's more of a leadoff hitter than any one on our team. The Rays definitely don't seem to mind.

All my information came from Cot's
So if any figures from the contracts are off, it’s on Cot’s. All the payroll totals come from Cot’s as well. The money left to spend is purely an estimate from me, since I don’t know how much the depth players are going to make. I guessimated at around 400K per depth player.
I fixed the Fuentes vesting option information.
"Just another Halo victory" - Rory Markas
Also if you look under "Contracts under payroll obligation"
Speier’s name isn’t there.
"Just another Halo victory" - Rory Markas
Check it out, right at the bottom of the page. His name is in italics....
as he’s no longer an Angel. We’re still paying him in excess of 5 million dollars this season, and then we’re done.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
So if Weaver gets 7 million in arbitration for 2011
Do we say good bye to him in 2012? He’s going to ask for a lot, especially if he puts up similar numbers in 2011.
"Just another Halo victory" - Rory Markas
No we don't say goodbye at all
Weave’s our ace, and aces generally cost you between 10-15 million dollars. Because he’s young and under team control, you’ll see Weaver make slightly below the 10 million dollar mark. In fact the only players to make over that in arbitration are guys like Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder and Tim Lincecum. In 2012, if Weaver repeats his 2010 performance in 2011, then we might see him at 10, but we’d still pay it.
Once Weaver hits FA then it’s a whole new ball game. Teams will be offering him 5 years 65 million. The Angels will need to open their pocketbooks to keep up.
We betrayed Vlad, the greatest Angel. Epic fail.
So Weaver doesn't qualify for Free agency until the end of 2012?
I wasn’t able to look it up, but he wasn’t on the 25-man roster in 2006?
"Just another Halo victory" - Rory Markas
We must learn to make nice nice with Boras.
We’ve got to keep Weaver and Morales. They are the defensive and offensive leaders of this team, and will be for years. Torii has been great, but he won’t be able to carry us forever.

Weaver
There is no way Weaver is going to land around 7M.. are you crazy? He is a Scott Bore ASS client and will get at least 10M, if not more. My fear is the Angels traded for Haren to mitigate an impending loss of Weaver.
Light up the Freakin Halo!
It makes sense in terms of arbitration
Scott Boras will probably ask for something above his going rate, say like 10 million. And the Angels will probably want something safer, closer to 6 million.
If they can’t make a deal happen, arbitration will make a one-year deal worth somewhere in the middle, like around 8 million.
"Just another Halo victory" - Rory Markas
No.
The arbitration process will not precipitate a compromise deal “worth somewhere in the middle, like around 8 million.”
MLB arbitration is “winner take all”. It is not a facilitated negotiation or an evaluative mediation process. The arbitration panel must choose to award either the player’s proposed salary number or the team’s proposed number. The panel has no power (or, even, desire) to create a “meet in the middle” solution – it’s one or the other.
"That's the true harbinger of spring, not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of a bat on a ball." ~Bill Veeck
But what usually happens
-because no one wants to lose – is that the initial offers/counter-offers get moderated before going in arb, so essentially a “compromise” is achieved. Those that don’t often get their asses handed to them.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

Boras
really doesn’t become much of a factor until free agency is hit. He can’t do much in arbitration – if he asks for the moon the arbitrator will simply side with the team. The only impact he makes is preventing his clients from agreeing to any extensions before they have a chance to test the open market.
And there is no club option for Kaz next year. If there was we could kiss his ass goodbye.
Technically the club has to decide whether or not to pick up his 2012 option in 2011
Boras is a pretty big factor in the arb hearings, he has books of data that he’ll show the arbitrator to justify giving his client what he wants, just like the Angels will have people try to say he’s not worth as much as he’s asking for
Nick Cafardo on the 2011 payroll
“The Angels have close to $110MM tied up in 2011 payroll counting arbitration raises, which could hinder their pursuit of free agents this winter.”
44fan claims that it is a fact Vlad will get hurt. Here is to your "borrowed time" Vlad. You were, are, and will be the man Vlad.
So $17 million
is a little high for free-agent spending money, but it’s not unreasonable. They’re probably assuming we resign Brian Fuentes, because that would take about a 6-7 million chunk out of the spending money.
"Just another Halo victory" - Rory Markas
The arbitration bill could easily reach $17M
I doubt anyone is including Fuentes – who will be a Free Agent when his option doesn’t vest – in the arbitration numbers.
Thumbnail example:
Weaver….. + $4.5M
Morales…..+ $3.5M
Aybar……..+ $2.5M
Napoli……+ $2M
Kendrick…+ $2M
Callaspo.. + $1.25M
Stokes….. + $1M
Willits…….+ $0.75M
Mathis…….+ $0. 5M
Frandsen..+ $0.25M
…………..——————-
………….+ $18.25M
…and some of these are shown significantly lower than what I expect will be the actual case. The total would be even higher if Saunders hadn’t been traded. I don’t know if the Cafardo quote predates that trade.
"That's the true harbinger of spring, not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of a bat on a ball." ~Bill Veeck
Matsui's gotta go
eventhough my son’s Japanese father in law loves him. Shields gotta go too, though we still love him. The last of the 2002 team! Woodie has to move on. We won’t give him a chance again, not with Callaspo. Wish it would have worked out, we all liked the kid. We’ll probably keep Willits, he is fast.
Can we please get Lee? Could you imagine our rotation then?
Xavier Calvera
The moves that make most sense...
Try to sign Crawford and try to trade Rivera for bullpen help. If you can trade Rivera for bullpen help (or at least get rid of his contract to free up money for bullpen) then you don’t need to make any other moves. Napoli/Abreu handle DH duties. Crawford, Bourjos, Hunter in the OF. Callaspo, Aybar, Kendrick, Morales around the IF. Some mix of Wilson, Mathis, Conger, Napoli behind the plate. Rotation is already set. Defense would rival any team.
As for Weaver’s arbitration, he isn’t going to get more than Lincecum who got a unprecented figure. Weaver has had a great year, but it isn’t comparable.
