Angels Still In The Race (For A Protected Draft Pick)
How are you with handling conflicting emotions? Well, the Angels may be 8 games removed from a playoff spot, but every frustrating loss brings them one game closer to winning a race that could mean a lot for the future: the race for the last protected first-round pick. Maybe it's wrong to root against the Angels, but this particular contest is a lot closer than the AL West. They're even in first place! Click through for upside-down standings.
The teams who finish with the 15 worst records in 2010 will earn the luxury of not having to surrender their first-round pick in the June 2011 amateur draft as compensation for signing a Type A free agent. This is pretty important because it allows a team to sign at least one top-shelf free agent in the off-season and still keep its top pick. (Such a team would give up its second-round pick instead, but the talent pool drops significantly after the first round.) How potentially important is this for the Angels?
The last time the Angels accomplished this anti-feat was 2003. That off-season they signed the 2004 American League MVP and the 2005 American League Cy Young, all while turning the #12 overall pick in the June Draft into some guy named Jered Weaver. Not saying that's likely to happen again, but it's something to think about.
Let's take a look at the standings:
Rank Team League Games Wins Losses WPCT
1 PIT NL 117 39 78 .333
2 BAL AL 118 41 77 .347
3 SEA AL 118 46 72 .390

30 NYY AL 117 72 45 .615
The Angels are currently sitting on the 15th pick overall (plus whatever compensation picks for amateurs who don't sign today), the last protected spot. It's close though. The Dodgers are just half a game behind and tanking hard. Colorado is probably too good to finish under .500, but the Blue Jays could make a late run. Are the Mets as good at coughing up draft picks as they are at choking away division leads? Will Mike Stanton's rookie performance cost the Marlins in the end? (Nah, they'd never sign a Type A anyways.)

No way dude.
Rooting for your team to lose to get higher draft picks is what the losers at Lookout Landing do. I’m not stooping to that level ever.
I hate the Texas Rangers

All I know is....
Angels get two top draft picks in Erstad and Glaus and become a lot better
M’s get two top draft picks in Griffey and A-Rod and become a lot better
Rays get a plethora of top picks and get a lot better
Nationals get a lot of top picks and things are looking a lot brighter.
Heck even the Pirates are excited about their possible rotation of the future.
If the Angels are going to lose I’d much rather they add another Mike Trout or Kaleb Cowart to their system instead of lose him when they eventually sign someone this offseason.
Having a top 15 pick is definitely more valuable to the franchise in the long run than a few extra wins in a lost season.
Every loss brings us closer to the prize and while other members incessantly whine about this season, I celebrate every loss like a victory.
Go ask Seattle executives how they feel about losing out on a talent like Stephen Strasbrug just because Yuniesky Betancourt decided to mash like Albert Pujols the final week of the 08 season.
Plus you can bet your ass Arte is going to sign at least one Type A this offseason so the pick must be protected at all costs.
I took your stash.

I hear ya
If we’re not getting to the playoffs, wins don’t mean a thing. While I’d never root for a loss, I really wouldn’t mind them if it means a protected pick, especially in next year’s draft.
Is the talent level next year significantly higher than previous years?

Funk tanking.
Look at how that ended between the Cleveland and LeBron. I can’t believe people are actually willing to discuss such a topic.
They want power. We want respect...
I mean, there's tanking
And there’s being realistic with the team’s current condition. They’re probably going to finish around .500. It would be a damn shame if the Angels lost an unprotected pick to a Type A free agent because they finished 84-78 instead of 82-80. Or conversely, I wouldn’t want to see the Angels neglect to sign a quality free agent because it would cost them their draft pick.
We'll probably just get there without needing any tanking.

i dont know if we will get a top 15 pick because of the top picks not signing
- and #9 didnt sign so we need to lose more games to get #15 in 2011
BTW Great post SubOp
Andy Seiler on MLB Bonus Baby was keeping track of the standings until a few weeks ago and I was too G.A. to look them up myself.

I say Live and let be.
If we get a good pick, sweet. But Nelson Cruz got put on the DL.. so lets make one more push!
You've been Bourjos'd!

Getting a protected draft pick would be a nice consolation prize should we tank
but to tank on purpose is not the Angel Way.
Tough Topic
I remember reading an article about how the Angels were able to choose Erstadt in the draft. This was when he was not only an admirable man but also a good MLB player. I believe he was either, by far, the best player available or the best player that was still available when the Angels chose.
The article told of a late season loss that ensured the Angels’ ability to be in the position to sign Erstadt. After reading this, I felt grateful we lost and were able to sign Ersty but that left a bitter taste in me.
I always want the Angels(us) to win. If a loss somehow helps us, wonderful. But how can a fan ever root against his team? I am saddened that, as of this writing, 60% of the voters here are recomending that our boys lay down for the opposition.
I wonder how many of you who voted for us to take a dive are against steroids and other PED’s? Isn’t losing on purpose as reprehensible as trying to be the best athelete possible by taking banned substances?
I hope that any of you who voted to cheat by intetionally losing will rethink and retract your vote. If you don’t think that quitting was the implied meaning of your vote; please explain.
P. S. I don’t think that we have much of a chance to win the West. But I hope our boys fight on until the end.
Who goofed? I've got to know.
the pride in knowing the Halos fought til the bitter end
will be pointless once the season is over and Texas is in the playoffs. I would much rather have a protected #1 pick AND have them go get a top free agent (Carl Crawford perhaps) if they want to as opposed to the Angels fighting for pride and then either losing out on their pick in a deep draft or them not wanting to give up their pick and in-turn not signing a top free agent.
the draft is designed to make the bad teams better in the future. face it, they are a bad team this season (not in the bottom half, but close), so might as well capitalize on their misfortune and turn it into a positive.
if the worst thing that happens by them losing a couple extra games is that you will have a bitter taste in your mouth, I can easily live with that.
and comparing the situation to taking PEDs is just stupid.
Be-cause YOU"RE THE ONE!

i'm not advocating laying down
but this team obviously doesn’t have what it takes to win the west. the rangers have stumbled pretty hard of late and have tried to give us games back, and we’re just not taking them.
i don’t ever hope we suck, but i can still look at the positive of being so inconsistent – a better draft pick.
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart - Always an Angel
We cannot jeapordize the culture of winning
So therefore, strategies in 2010 that help in 2011 and beyond need to be ones that can also at least be sold as strategies to help in 2010, a la sticking Flete Pete in CF, letting Kohn & Thompson get seasoned in the bullpen, putting Abreu at leadoff. The Arlingtons are in full choke mode, so we fight like bitches until we’re 15 games out or mathematically eliminated. I don’t think that’ll happen until late September at the earliest.
you should run for Congress
you’d fit right in
