Angels finally place players on Waivers

Ken_Rosenthal #Angels finally place trade candidates on waivers: Fuentes, J. Rivera, Napoli, others. Abreu included, but he is signed through '11. #MLB I am happy to see this finally happen. Hopefully they can get some salary relief to apply to next years budget.

Interesting, I bet all get claimed.

I’m seeing a Napoli, Rivera and possibly Fuentes trade.

I'd be sad to see Napoli go.

Fuentes could be useful for a contender

Would you just release any of these guys if claimed?

No, I'd want something in return for all of them.....

If we offer Fuentes arb and he declines and elects FA, we will get draft picks. We should let him go for anything less than a AA/AAA starter like Palmer. Bell or O’Sullivan, guys like that.

Napoli is a catcher who would probably hit 30 HR’s if he played 150 games, making him one of the top 5 offensive catchers in baseball, and he only costs 3 million, I’d want a good A ball pitcher in return.

Rivera….yeah ’d just let him go, save 5 million next year, try to land Crawford or Dunn.

Me too, and if he didn't we'd have a solid closer again

This is a joke right?

Fuentes has some value and the Angels should be able to get something decent for him. However, if they cannot then let the guy walk. The thought of paying him $11m or so to be our closer makes me sick.

Rivera should also fetch something decent. He signed reasonably for 2011. Now his 2010 season has been awful, but prior to this he has been a solid player who signed an under-market contract.

Napoli should also fetch something really nice. An “A” type prospect or a couple B’s.

The big one is Abreu. If we can dump Abreu I would be thrilled. Even if we have to pick up $3m or in salary.

Would have liked to have seen Rodney, Hunter, and Kendrick also placed on waivers. Don’t think we can move Hunter but if someone wanted his salary I wouldn’t think twice about moving him. Kendrick, given his salary and team control, could get you something decent. Rodney I would let go for salary relief, no prospects needed.

Fuentes can't possibly be a type A free agent. I dont think he is getting an arb offer either

I would give Fuentes, Abreu, Rivera and Matsui away for free if need be.

Matsui wouldn't save us much money at all, no point in giving him away

Not when he’s an icon abroad. Abreu can still swing the bat a little, I’d keep him too. Rivera I would give away for free. Fuentes I wouldn’t give away for free but cheap, and Napoli would definitely cost a good prospect.

Abreu's contract next year is not very favorable

It also amounts to around 50-60% of what we would pay Crawford. Good way to clear salary. Although I doubt anyone claims him. Too dangerous.

Fuentes in my opinion, is not going to get an ARB offer from us. he is not worth the money and I doubt he turns it down.

No way, AAA at least if we're doing one-for-one

There’s far too much uncertainty with A-ballers. If we give Napoli up for that level of talent, I want at least two A prospects in return.

I'm not really privy to this whole waiver thing

How significant is this? Or is it just standard procedure that probably won’t lead to anyone moving?

In all honesty they probably put the whole team on waivers and most will be pulled back

Although I could see Fuentes and MAYBE Matsui getting moved.

They are available for another team to "claim"

the claimants rank in order from worst to best … once a team “claims” your player, then you can open a dialog for a trade. If you do not like the trade offer, you can bring that player back and deny the trade. At that point, your player in no longer available to be claimed by another team.

I love this team.

We got the worst pitcher on our staff on waivers last year

Its usually not a huge deal but some deals can still be made

poor fella. He was right on that Napoli is the better catcher. Maybe he can talk to Scioscia about it.

If the guy clears waivers (forget how long it takes), then he can be traded.

The July 31 deadline is only for trades where players don’t have to clear waivers.

Example: U-Haul was placed on waivers by ATL. We didn’t pick him up on waivers… instead he cleared, and then we traded Kotch for U-Haul.

I bet Napoli and Fuentes get claimed

I also think that we won’t get what we want for Napoli so we will pull him back. I do believe Fuentes will be dealt for a few lower prospects in return to paying off the rest of this years salary.

Matsui, Rivera, and Fuentes I reckon are the likeliest to go

Rivera seems permanently in Sosh’s doghouse, and now that Bourjos has taken over CF, there’s no real use in having 3 bad-fielding LFers for a maximum 2 slots.

by mattwelch on Aug 24, 2010 5:42 PM PDT reply actions

hopefully, some other teams see that Rivera usually heats up in the 2nd half...

and don’t look at his fielding.

Wait a sec
Napoli’s is one of our best offensive players, and is playing acceptable defense at C, while Mathis is playing similar defense and hitting below the Mendoza line. Yet Naps is placed on waivers?

by phoenix15 on Aug 24, 2010 6:22 PM PDT reply actions

Mike Scioscia man, he loves his defense and thinks Mathis is a good defensive catcher

Tools wise, I tend to agree, he’s athletic, has a strong arm and is smart. Performance is a different matter though.

DOOOD....

Look at Napoli’s average with runners in scoring position…Its under .200 this year. Solo shots are fun to watch but don’t do much for the scoreboard most of the time.

So what's your point?

Jeff Mathis hits .202 with RISP. Bobby Wilson hits .222 in those situations. Work whatever angle you want, Naps is still our best offensive catcher and it’s not even close. Unless Reagins can pull Brian McCann out of his ass you might as well try and appreciate Napoli for what he is.

Ineptness

I keep seeing if only we still had Kendry things might be different. Well if you had 3or4 of him it might be better.Shows how bad this lineup actually is. Bottom 9th 1 run down relief pitcher in throws 9 pitches and strikes out the side.Lot of talent on the Angels part.I also believe there are to many switch hitters onthe team they seem to be pretty good as long as they can bat lefty put them up against any lefty pitcher and they go softly into that good nite.People keep complaining about the pitching staff. lot of pressure on them to throw shutouts for a win if the Angels manage to score a run or 2.Also Hatcher has to go…!

by FredP on Aug 24, 2010 7:18 PM PDT reply actions

Kendry alone would net 4-5 more wins

Whatever stats you wanna go with, that’s pretty much a given. He would also have the effect of improving the guys immediately before and after him – so Torii and Matsui/Napoli/Rivera – which would increase their performance moderately, netting maybe 1-3 more wins. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that with Kendry, we could concievably be only 4-5 back right now.

Still, you are right. Even with Morales, this crappy bullpen’s pitching would have us in 2nd place.

The hope is

The Angels get anything in return for Matsui, find someone to take on Rivera and Abreu’s contracts, get a solid minor leaguer for Fuentes and someone offers them something that can’t refuse for Napoli. My guess is Napoli is just a “let’s see what happens” drop into waivers. He has heavy value and could be an asset for the team. Everyone else, I would be glad to see go for something.

Exactly… a gauge that can lead to off-season trade discussions. That’s the beauty of waivers is that while you may not want to trade the guy, you may get a nice offer sometime down the road by simply letting other teams know “hey, we might be interested in dealing this guy … let’s talk.”

I love this team.
