Not To Be A "Debbie Downer" About Carl Crawford but...

While Rays outfielder Carl Crawford did tell "Angels On Air" host Jeff Biggs (interview can be heard here) that he would consider Anaheim his new home town it will ultimately be economics that will determine his 2011 team and beyond. He said his first choice would be to remain with the Rays but with their budget limitations and top prospect Desmond Jennings ready to take over an outfield spot it is highly unlikely he will return. Unfortunately for the Halos there are going to be many teams pursuing Crawford and the Angels may not be able to get into a bidding war.

Here's the problem...

It looks increasingly likely that the Halos will be outbid for Crawford's services anyhow.

That might not be a bad thing. He is a very good ballplayer no doubt, but he will certainly not be worth the money he is going to be paid, given his skill set.

I don't know

With a guy like Crawford, who has proven that he’s a well above average player, who works well with Scioscia’s philosophies, and who brings a skill set the Angels DRASTICALLY lack this season, it would be hard to overpay. I think you could make the case that anything shy of $20 million for 5 years is reasonable.

Will he get more than that? Maybe. And that’s where I wonder if the Angels will have the funds to compete. I would absolutely not complain if the Angels gave him a contract like Hunter’s.

But for a Pipe Dream what an outfield, defensively

LF Crawford
CF Bourjos
RF Hunter

Weird to think you could have an outfield that all 3 guys could win a gold glove in the same year…

There's no doubt in my mind trades and non-tenders will take place in order to save money

There’s simply no way this team opens 2011 with Juan Rivera on the roster. He has value, other teams wouldn’t mind having him for 5 million, but he has no spot on this team with the emergence of Peter Bourjos, displacing Hunter and Abreu.

The Angels will also not carry 3 catchers again, not when Hank Conger is so close to being ready. Even if he doesn’t start the year with the Angels, you can bet he will finish it. I think Jeff Mathis will be non-tendered. The charade has gone on long enough. I expect Brian Stokes will also be allowed to walk, we have too many inexpensive, younger, better options.

While it is clear that Napoli will cost us more than we’d like, this team simply cannot live without his production and it will get him into the lineup at DH as often as he catches, so you can expect 120 games.

The Angels will go “all in” for Carl Crawford, offering him 5 years at 16-17 million a year. We might have to bite the bullet next year with an inflated payroll, but the following years will clear up plenty of cap space to make this move reasonable.

- The ball club is simply lost on the base paths, and Carl Crawford plays Angels style baseball.
- He provides the additional pop we need (he’s a career .309 hitter with RISP).
- He would more than likely give us the best defensive OF in baseball, something the Angels have missed for years
- He makes it so Callaspo, Izturis, Aybar and Kendrick all remain on the bottom half of the order, where they are effective and where they belong.

Carl Crawford just makes too much sense, and fills too many holes for the Angels not to outbid EVERYONE. You can count on this guys, with Carl Crawford and Kendry Morales being infused into this lineup, we will be very effective.

Or do you envision Adam Dunn fitting in? Or will Tony surprise us with a ninja trade, or will we have another season of lackluster offense?

I agree

I don’t see how Crawford fits for 2011. However, I also don’t see anywhere else that the Angels can reasonably expect to upgrade unless we trade someone. Morales, Kendrick, Aybar, Callaspo are all locks and there aren’t any impact players available at catcher. So, absent a trade of one of those players, we are going to have to rotate Torii and Abreu at DH and sign Crawford.

I agree with you.

Since there’s no obvious replacement at 2B, and Mice Tits can’t go a full season without an injury, and I don’t see Callaspo moving to second, were pretty much stuck with HK. Not that I think that’s necessarily bad. In a season where everybody’s failed miserably, it’s hard for me to be too tough on Howie. Now Mathis, i’ll be one tough mofo on that waste of roster space.

Actually there is an obvious replacement, a couple really

Callaspo being the first, and of course this is contingent upon landing another 3B. The other is Alexi Amarista, who has impressed in the minors this year, is young, has Erick Aybar type of skill set and can play OF and SS.

I'm no scout or expert or anyhting like that

and I haven’t actually personally seen the guy play so I’m probably talking out of my ass here but looking at his stats didn’t exactly make me excited about what he will do in the big leagues offensively.

He has hit well for average in the minors but with minimal patience and power. I know power is not the name of his game but chances are he won’t be a .300 hitter in the majors and so the lack of patience will make him become an OBP black hole.

I hope I’m wrong but I have a feeling he’s essentially another Erick Aybar.

Ive seen amarista play quite a bit; the guy reminds me a bit of tony phillips

I dont think he has the pop that phillips did (steroids?), but he is a small guy who gets down in his batting stance and just seems pesky at the plate and on the bases. I havent checked the numbers on him, but it seemed he had a good eye and good contact skills.

At this point, I wouldnt expect much out of him in the bigs- he was in A ball to start the year. I would guess he would be a pretty average guy in the bigs- Maybe a .270-280 hitter, 10-12 sb, 5-10 hr. Not much to get excited about.

by Balls and Strikes on Aug 27, 2010 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd actually expect something slightly better....

HE just gets the job done at every level, and I think his biggest asset would end up being his defense and OBP. I’d say .290/.350 30+ DB 5 HR 15 SB.

Not an all star, but when you combine the fact that he’s going to be 22 next season, would only cost us half a million vs several million, can play multiple positions and defend well, I’d say he’s a useful player to have in the system. I DON’T think he should be promoted yet, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if he spent all of next year in AAA. But 2012 and beyond, I think he will be useful.

by Halowood on Aug 27, 2010 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Actually, no. I like having Howie Kendrick at 2B...

He has a solid BA, and gap power and some speed and defends the positions adequately. We don’t need a superstar there. Callaspo has been refreshing at 3B, he hits for average, has some pop and defends the position better than advertised, has a very strong arm.

But, should the Angels be presented with a trade proposal for Howie that makes a ton of sense for the team, then I wouldn’t hesitate to go with Alexi Amarista. I’d prefer it if he got another half season of AAA under his belt, but the tools are there.

He’s very similar to Aybar in that he hits for average, and is fast and steals bases, but his success rate isn’t very good. He’s a very good defender at 2B, and athletic enough for SS or OF, like Aybar. The biggest difference if Alexi has shown significantly more patience than Aybar in the minor leagues and could probably lead off for the Angels in 2 or 3 years.

So I pick Howie, but I do believe we have a nifty, young back up that can be ready to go soon.

I respectfully disagree

His offensive value is totally dependent on batting average, and if that slips by 20-25 points, you’re stick with just another light-hitting .270 batter who never gets on base. He’s Garret Anderson with twice the speed but half the power. He’ll turn 30 next season, he’s going to lose a step or two within the next four years, and someone is going to be very, very sorry to be paying him $15+ million a year once he does. Come on guys, haven’t the last few years taught us anything about offering long-term contracts to outfielders past their playing primes?

by Suboptimal on Aug 26, 2010 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I respectfully respect your respectful disagreement

However I don’t think Crawford losing a step will be a big deal. So he’ll steal 40 bases instead of 50? Oh well. So he’ll lose a step in LF, even though he’s the fastest LF to begin with and we have the fastest CF to help him out.

I see nothing indicating that Carl Crawford will only hit .270 and never get on base. I see every indication that he will hit .290ish maybe .300, get on base, provide pop, provide speed, provide defense, tons of things we are lacking. He’s grown as a player and has become a consistent contributor. Is he worth 15+ million? No, the only player we have that I think is, is maybe Kendry Morales, and we’re finding out this year just how important he was. But, seeing as we need him, and he seems to be a fix for a lot of different things, I’m currently in favor of it.

Two weeks ago I wasn’t though, so in a month, who knows, maybe I’ll change sides again. This isn’t one of those where I can claim I was the first supporter or opponent or strongly in any corner.

Fair enough

Just keep in mind that batting average is usually the first thing to decline after a player passes his prime. Crawford just doesn’t have other skills at the plate to compensate. I mean, he hit .273 just two years ago and ended up as a significantly below average batter that season, especially at a power position.

I agree that Crawford does have speed to spare in left field, and he’ll probably never become a below average defender. However, swiping 40 bags is actually costing your team runs if you get caught 20 times doing it. The break-even point is usually around a 73% success rate, so Crawford’s wheels just aren’t going to create enough value to make up for slippage in other parts of his game.

I am sick and tired of hearing about "Angels style baseball" bullcrap.

Unfortunately, the Angels have absolutely not played that style this year. With the way they have performed, I think that the organization will try very hard to go back to that style (It worked after all). I agree with you that they will go all in on Crawford.

I have to wonder how that style of baseball deteriorated so precipitously this year when the only thing that was different was the loss of Figgins, Guerrero, and Morales, and only one of those cats played “Angels style” baseball.

I've always seen it as branding

What is “Angels baseball”? Is it just stealing bases, sacrificing runners, swinging on 3-0, etc.? Well, that’s how literally everyone played baseball 30 years ago. And it’s not like these things have disappeared. Managers call for these plays all the time. The difference seems to be that Mike Scioscia has slightly less restraint than the average manager.

by Suboptimal on Aug 26, 2010 8:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I've secretly wondered if the skip was only managing based on his roster, rather than an organizational philosophy.

The Angel way is entirely predicated on putting pressure on teams, who subsequently make mistakes on the field. This strategy has always worked on most teams until you get to the post season and play quality teams that do not make mistakes as readily as the Royals’ of the world. That is where this style’s fundamental flaw lies.

We all know that the 2002 team was a team that thrived on a “batter’s box” offense. I think that this year was an attempt to test whether a lineup with more potential power would succeed. An all out blitz for Crawford would suggest that the FO made a mistake in their approach last offseason.

Tearing up the bases is great

So long as:
1. You have players with the baserunning skills to do it, and
2. Your players can get on base to begin with.
The Angels do not have either. The Rays have both. That’s half the reason they’re in first place and the Angels are not.

Yeah....UM...DUH.

As I’ve said before on this blog, Carl is going to get WAY overpaid by some team and chances are it ISNT going to be the Angels. Since letting the Reagins-era commence, Del Ninja has showcased his reluctancy in dishing out big, long-term contracts with Torii Hunter (his FIRST signing) being the only exception.

We seem to be entering an era where it has become a norm for players to get overpaid. Lackey is one example. If you follow an iota of the MLB, you could probably name about 400 other players who have received ridiculously high and wholly underserved contracts over the past 5-6 years. QUESTION: What makes you think Carl Crawford will end up any different. Get a clue people, Mr. Crawford is going to the highest bidder and it aint us…and you all should be thankful that there is some sense in the FO who wont be willing to shell those kind of bucks too.

Its not the angels style. Tony’s style is making trades at the trade deadline and making small, essential signings in the off-season. YES, Tony has overpaid but not in tens of millions of dollars…only in small increments. And frankly, in the grand-scheme of things, paying a reliever like Rodney six milllion instead of the 2.5 million that he probably should have gotten is small beans. If we DO get Crawford it will be because the major players like the Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox are content with their left-fielders…but looking at their rosters….i think they might throw in an ante for Carl.

by wumbug on Aug 26, 2010 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

The Torii signing

To begin with, I am reasonably sure Hunter could have received that deal or a better one had he really worked the free agent market. Instead, I think he saw the Angels as a team which is always contending, a manager in Scioscia he respected, and a good community in which to play. I wouldn’t doubt that the Yankees coveted him (with Bernie Williams gone, the CF position had been a revolving door) and there were other teams which could have stepped up. The Rangers thought they had a deal in place when Hunter was signing his contract with the Angels.

So Reagins sees what’s in front of him: A player who is a known leader, one who can become the face of the franchise (so important in locking up season ticket sales and creating goodwill in the community) and one who can provide a solid anchor to the OF, along with some pop in his bat—who is willing to take a small discount to sign here and now.

I don’t think Reagins made a bad decision. Had he dithered (see: Stoneman, Bill) and negotiated ad infinitum, Hunter and his agent would have been long gone. He kept Hunter away from the Rangers and brought mature leadership on the roster to a team which frequently has raw rookies.

The way he handled the Bourjos situation is basically all we need to know. Hunter was the right choice, and that contract will, in total, have paid dividends to the team when it is completed.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

I think he'll be fine

He mashed at every stop from Cuba on up. A somewhat down year might happen, but it looks like he’s got plenty of time to get back into the swing of things. Remember, when this first went down they were saying he might be coming back sometime around now. Obviously that was wrong, but add another 6-8 weeks and we’re in Oct/Nov.

I’m wondering if a stint in winterball might be a good idea provided he’s healthy enough and especially if he can spend a good chunk of time at DH.

Morales wont be ready for winterball.

They want him fully healed for Spring Training and they will take it slow. That said, I don’t expect him to be out for as long as Juan Rivera was. His injury was not as severe.

Yeah, it's mainly wishful thinking on my part

I was hoping there would be an outside chance of him paying in the Puerto Rican League since they start in mid-November, which is the latest I know of.

Everybody is put on waivers

Perhaps a team Tony never thought would be interested in him claims Napoli and they have a productive conversation about a deal. It doesn’t mean he’s going to be dealt tomorrow. But a lot of the waiver wire claims plant seeds for offseason deals.

As for Morales. We ask the good Dr. every time we see him and the answer is always that he’s progressing and working hard.

Sounds like a typical team doctor answer.

I doubt they’d say “We are very concerned about his progress.” I guess we’ll see next spring.

Crawford is not going to be an Angel next year, too much competition.

Thanks for the pure speculation and nice job of pimping your insider blog.

How does one go about being an insider? Do I have to move to the O.C.? And is it as great as the T.V. show?

Why do Victor and Gubicza always wear the same shirts on the show?

I thought matching outfits went out in the 80’s or something.

Signing Crawford isn't impossible

IF he really wants to play in the same OF as Torii (as has been reported elsewhere), he and his agent can massage the dollars and come up with a deal which might not be top dollar but which can be satisfying to both sides.

If he backloads the deal, for example, he can take a much smaller salary in 2011 and have it escalate in 2012 and again in 2013, when the Angels lose other deals from the books. Likewise, he can compensate with a signing bonus instead of straight salary, which, from accounting perspective, is handled differently on the books.

That said, I remain unconvinced he’s the right player for a long-term deal to play for the Angels. I just don’t think this is as unworkable a situation as the Insider post maintained. If he wants to play here, he’ll make it happen.

I say

Keep the team as it is and go with what we got one more year. Keep Fuentes and Matsui if we need the left hand bat (if the price is right on both). Then evaluate. Time to reload but now is not the time. After we dump the GMJ contract and keep expenses down then we can reload in 2012. Bite the bullet for the long term. Don’t be knee jerk fans that have to win now at the expense of the future. Let’s spend big on free agents when we have the money.

Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

We have the money

it is just a matter if ARte wants to open it up or keep the same pay roll. If he wants to keep it the same for next year then yes wait it out until the douchebags come off the books. But, does Arte want to sit through another shitty year, I think not.

I have to disagree with this

Although I agree with the sentiment of not sacrificing the future, bringing back the same team is not a good idea. We would have all the same issues as this season, providing no realistic chance to make the playoffs. And we would have an even higher payroll than this season (due to the acquisition of Haren and other automatic and arbitration-related raises).

If we want to improve the team, we should spend our money on someone other than Fuentes and Matsui. If we instead want to save money and rebuild for the future, we should replace them internally with our own young and cheap minor leaguers.

by Brody on Aug 27, 2010 11:49 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Crawford DOES seem to fit like a glove

However, this will be the first season in his career where his numbers do not improve from the previous year (ignoring 2008 when he was injured). In other words, this is more than likely as good as he is going to get. At $15 million a year for 5 years I’d say that production (defense included) is worth it. Once that annual salary gets closer to $20 million he becomes a dangerously overpaid player. The Skanks and Sux can absorb that, and the Tigers have enough coming off the books to take that risk, but I don’t see the Halos being that aggressive.

Another thing to consider, as our friend Mr. Kaplan has pointed out before, is that he has spent his whole nine year career on artificial turf. Those wheels will come off eventually. Do we want to be stuck with the slower Carl Crawford, especially if his power and plate discipline stay at their current, minimal levels? Sure, we’ve seen Torii pull off the rare feat of improving his plate discipline in his early thirties, but do we really want to count on lightning striking twice?

Again, I agree with George above me. If Crawford makes it a point that he wants to play here and pushes for something to get done, then great. Otherwise, Tony can get creative and replace his potential production in other areas.

I'd rather the Angels sign David DeJesus (if KC doesn't pick up his option)

Although he’s not the same player Crawford is, it’d take less years and probably at least half the cost. More bang for the buck.

He reminds me too much of GMJ

A pretty average guy who is having a big year just in time for a new contract

by Balls and Strikes on Aug 27, 2010 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

GMJ was never average

before his big year. DeJesus has always been a steady performer and would fit into this team perfectly. He is basically Carl Crawford with a lot less speed (and a lot less dollars). No way KC doesn’t pick up his very reasonable option, but he might be worth looking into as a trade option.

Looking big picture.

As I sit cross legged in my cubical, meditating on our future, I see a river, flowing through the gentle plain that is Angel Stadium’s outfield… Hunter ages gracefulish in RF as Pete becomes a solid contributor in center, we sign Crawford for 5yrs 17-20 mill max, we are not suffocated by our payroll because of the post 2012 departures, Aramastia coming in at 2nd, a bullpen that is young and cheap, etc. So a couple years of a Crawford, Bourjos, Hunter outfield. When Hunter falls off our books, Crawford becomes our slightly over paid outfielder (after providing good production and defense for three years) Now Trout, Moore, Grichuk are howling for playing time from Salt Lake. If one of them develops faster than a couple years, cough cough TROUT, then Torii becomes a DH a little faster.

I say throw money at Crawford, he’ll help keep our outfield fast and offensively effective while we allow our young beasties to learn to hit curvy pitches, etc. He’ll be 36 when that contract expires… just in time to give his job to a Bee.

I know I’m spending a little bit of Arte’s money for him here, but a couple years of Pete, Aybar, Callaspo, Hunter, Morales, Napoli, Crawford, and Kendrick (who I still foolishly believe will hit .300 more often than .270 most seasons) may not be as powerful as Texas’ players, but it’ll be a team that can come at you a lot of ways…. and we’ll have kick ass starting pitching at least one of those seasons too…. With one big spending kick we can rebuild and compete, like the Braves.

Sometimes I wish Rex would be quiet
