It's your turn to fix the Angels... Where do you start?
As the Angels limp in to the final month of the season trailing the Rangers by a touchdown and a field goal the question has to be asked what could have they done differently? I was perhaps too optimistic when I predicted in early March that I thought this team could win 97 games again but to play below .500 through the first 5 months of the season would have seemed even more unlikely. So what would you have done if you were in Tony Reagins shoes? What trades or signings would have made sense AND WERE AVAILABLE?

This is why I accussed him/them of pimping their website in the last fanpost.
Odd that i got no reply to comment while most everyone else did. This has never been allowed before on HH, why is it now? It seems only fair that Rev Halofan should be given an extensive on-air interview so he can promote Halos heaven in the same way Jason Brennon is allowed to promote his Insider blog here and suck in the high traffic this site offers another, lesser blog.
I hate the Texas Rangers
AM830 already reps HH a decent amount
See what occurred here for example. I don’t mind the threads since it’s likely someone else would end up linking them here anyway. Although, I agree some of them would be better as fanshots.
No harm, no foul in the end.

we have a good relationship.
LAAAI is the only true INSIDER blog and Halos Heaven is by far the biggest Angels fan community with the largest reach across the internet.
They are there for our staff when we need direction “on the inside” of the organization and we are there for them to help them build traffic to the only other indispensable Angels fan blog.
Maybe then
LAAAI should have a tab on here like Yahoo, Fangraphs and Fanhouse do on SB Nation sites, where links to their recent articles could be accessible.

I actually have done very little of the posting here and only post under the name Throwbacks. We do a good amount of pushing HH on the air and we consider it the best Angels site on the web. LAAI was created as an outlet for the tons of audio we collect and a place to put some of our thoughts. When our show is less structured in the off season expect more HH love.

I like the LAAI stuff
And don’t mind (too much) that readers have to leave the site to finish the post. How about returning the favor and linking to some of HH’s stuff on LAAI. Suboptimal has been posting some really good content, maybe a link from your site to HH?
Since I don’t live in SoCal and typically forget about the online streaming, I miss out on the on-air HH love, but I do appreciate it.
I would have still done the Haren trade and that's about it
Haren was a good move long-term. The only 1B worth going after would have been Konerko, and frankly Chicago was never really far enough out to shop him, thanks in part to like 5 or 6 games we handed to them. I would have been pissed off if we gave up 3 guys for D. Lee. Callaspo was an okay move, but I don’t think I would have done it.
I also might have tried to trade Mathis to Japan in return for Godzilla’s lost mojo. I’m sure that violates some kind of agreement between MLB and NPB, but as we’ve seen lately, MLB doesn’t seem to care if clubs break the rules as long as the details of it are kept out of the press.
Drop money on a bat and a reliever or two this winter. Remember, the Angels should have some extra cash from All-Star Week to compensate a little for missing the playoffs.

Which wouldn't have happened had the information not been leaked
And, correct me if I’m wrong, the Pirates are also being frowned upon for taking revenue sharing money and pocketing it instead of putting it back into the team. If there was no leak, nobody from the MLB front office would be doing anything about this.

Not exactly
The Marlins were reprimanded before the season and to fix the problem they signed Josh Johnson to an extension and increased payroll. They also kept Uggla.
The Pirates built a brand new academy in the Dominican and have spent more on the amateur draft than any team in baseball over the last three years.
The revenue sharing dollars are to be spent in a way that helps the team win. It is that vague. The Pirates are not in violation of that.
Ethically i think what the Pirates and especially the marlins are doing is unforgivable.

The Marlins and their stadium is the big issue to me
This discussion has been had just recently here about the overblown “benefit” of using public funds to build stadiums. Bud Selig goes around pushing them in every city he visits and out comes an example of a team using the threat of relocation to get the public to pick up more of the bill than necessary. To me, if MLB is going to push new stadiums for every club, they ought to at least get off their asses and make sure the teams are negotiating fair deals with their cities.
And I still don’t see why we shouldn’t be able to trade Mathis to Japan like I proposed…just sayin’.

The bigger crime in Florida is that public officials agreed to pay $1.2 Billion back in order to borrow a mere $91 million in principal. Far more attrocious to me.
The Yankee Stadium scandal also pissed me off.

Screw that, this is a business remember? I have seen no evidence to show that was the case.
I cannot believe the angels- or any other franchise- would pass on two high draft picks to be kind to a player. DO could have still been signed by the rangers, or he could have retired. It doesnt make any sense.

I agree with you about DO,
but I have been reading lately that a few players are now putting that in their contract (not to be offered arbitration). I doubt anyone would have realized a couple years ago that offering arbitration to a player would reduce his “signability”.
Sure they would prior to the 2009 lots of guys were left in the cold due to their Type A status

For my money, I think fixing this team starts at returning to what worked best....
Aggressive small ball, defense, pitching and bullpen. Say what you want about being dominated in the playoffs, we got there year in and year out. We’ve gotta grow our own players and stop having a team salary North of 120 million. That’s for the Red Sox and Yankees to buy a World Series, not us, we should grow ours, and supplement it with FA vets. The Rays know how to do it and they got it from us, for whatever reason we just forgot how.
Here’s the needed changes.
- Let Brian Fuentes walk, I understand he’s been pretty good this year, but I’d rather save that 9 million dollars and stick with Rodriguez, Kohn, Walden, Jepsen and Bulger.
- End this whole Juan Rivera charade. I don’t care what last years numbers say, the guy is a God awful defender and just doesn’t fit our scheme. Trade him away, save that 5 million.
- Let Abreu play out next year and that’s it. So he’s a Latin American clubhouse leader, I don’t care. Morales, Aybar, Izturis, Santana etc. are all old enough and have been in the league long enough to know what to do.
- Gulp, trade Mike Napoli. Look, I know he hits the long ball, but 6 million dollars for a catcher that’s not great defensively and doesn’t play more than 100 games a year for us isn’t a good move. Other teams would love to have Mike Napoli, go get some pitching in return.
- Cut Jeff Mathis. I understand all the tools are there to be a great backstop, but this is going on 4 seasons or so now and he still can’t stay above .200 and still hasn’t put it together behind the plate.
- Try to sign Crawford. Yeah, I wanna limit the payroll, but to me, it just seems like he fills too many needs. I wont’ go on about this because I already have several times. Suffice it to say, I think we need him.
- Promote Hank Conger. He’s shown in AAA that he’s ready offensively and defensively. He’s young and under club control, is inexpensive, smart and immensely talented. Even if he doesn’t hit a lick, he’s still better than Mathis, and we have Wilson who is better than Mathis as well.
- If we do all these things, this team will be better offensively, better defensively, faster and younger and will be about 5 million less expensive than it is now, so we’d be operating in the low 120’s for next year. But then we’d become much lower than that when Abreu is gone and we’re done paying GMJ and we give a shot to guys like Trumbo, Pettit, Amarista, Trout. We continue across the next few years, going with our young guys and limiting FA signings unless they are too good to pass up.
No more Shea Hillenbrand, GMJ, Steve Finley, Kelvim Escobar, Scot Shields, Fernando Rodney crap. These were all questionable moves that smelled of a FO that didn’t know what the hell to do. It’s simple, if the FA’s out there aren’t for sure going to help this team and are long in the tooth, forget about them and go with what you have. Save yourself and the fans some money and give the young guys a chance.

Halowood
I don’t understand how you lump Shields in with Hillenbrand, GMJ, S Finley, Rodney —Scot Shields is the best set up guy in Angels history and Escobar was nails until he got hurt so why is he included with these other deadbeats? Plus Shields was homegrown.
Angels in 2010!
I lump Shields in there because offered over 5 million a year for someone who was aging
and getting progressively worse year after year. He WAS great, there’s no denying that, Shields was the best at what he did. But if most of the fan base saw health issues coming with age, why didn’t the FO?
With Escobar, we threw 9 million a year at him, without looking at his medical charts or getting a physical. Stupid, dumb, idiotic, everything.

What the hell is your point? Are you a rare snob of an Angels fan because it makes you feel good and smarter than you really are or is it because the cool kids made fun of you when you were younger?
You’re right though, no proof of there never being a physical. At the same time though, can you offer concrete evidence that says the Angels specifically had Dr. Yocum look him over?

Hate to burst your bubble
With Escobar, we threw 9 million a year at him, without looking at his medical charts or getting a physical. Stupid, dumb, idiotic, everything.
Each of these players has a life insurance contract taken out on him at the time a big free agent contract is negotiated. There isn’t an insurance company on Earth which would provide insurance on Escobar or anyone else without medical records, and those records are provided by the Angels and the medical staff attending to Escobar.
Furthermore, every free agent signing is contingent upon the player passing a physical; sometimes, one can even read in news stories about Player X rumored to have signed with a team that an announcement of the signing is pending the player’s physical. Very rarely, a deal isn’t consummated when negative info is found in the physical (see: Sheets, Ben).
The Angels had all the medical info needed, pure and simple. The team did its due diligence, which was mandatory to get the required insurance on the player. To insist that he was signed without medical testing is simply hysterical posturing about imaginary events.
Finally, regarding Shields:
I lump Shields in there because offered over 5 million a year for someone who was aging and getting progressively worse year after year. He WAS great, there’s no denying that, Shields was the best at what he did. But if most of the fan base saw health issues coming with age, why didn’t the FO?
Would it kill you to pay even the tiniest bit of attention to history? Shields was signed to an extension for 08-10 before the start of the 2007 season (he had already signed his 2007 deal months before), and 2006 was arguably the best year he posted for the Angels. Furthermore, he improved between 2004 and 2006, he wasn’t in decline. Despite your assertions, most of the fan base (correctly) saw a pitcher at the top of his game, blessed with a “rubber arm” and durable as all hell.
In addition, he was solid and dependable for 2007 and 2008; it wasn’t until last season that the wheels began to come off. Given that, even after what transpired in the last two seasons, he is regarded as one of the great bullpen arms of the last decade, it can hardly be said that it was foolish to sign him in March of 2007.

Because I use five words when one will do?
Thanks for the kind words just the same.
BTW, it occurred to me later, in the discussion about Escobar, that his deformity (for want of a better word) wasn’t discovered in the medical exams he took to complete his free agent signing in 2004, nor in any medical exams for the Blue Jays, nor in any subsequent exams he took for the Angels, up to 2007. I think it was in surgery that the doctors discovered he had been born without one of the four muscles of the right shoulder; despite an obvious handicap, the threw well into the 90s for most of his career. Some medical problems simply go undiagnosed, despite the level of attention the individual received during the exam.

I'm looking for more concrete players....
Steve Finley in his late 30’s vs Carl Crawford, 29 years old. Shea Hillenbrand….HA! I just think Carl Crawford isn’t old, has the tools we need and in this offseason or any, is about as close to a “sure thing” as there is. And by “sure thing” I mean a guy that is going to do exactly what he’s doing right now, which is producing.

Can I ask you something?
I won’t challenge your right to your opinion. But out of curiosity, can you just explain to me why you are so convinced that Carl Crawford’s offensive value is not going to depreciate significantly over the length of a long-term contract? I’m actually not being a smart-ass here. It’s a professional thing. My line of work requires more attention to why people think they’re right than whether they are actually right.
It makes great sense to sign Crawford to a deal as long as it is not a 7-year deal
He’s the best base stealer in baseball. He hits for power and average. And is among the best defensive OF’ers in baseball. What’s not to like?
Yeah, he’s 30. He’s not 35. A four or five year deal would be great. But, the bidding is going to be steep.

this Monday-morning QB stuff is ridiculous for a game like baseball (but great for a blog)
There are so many unexpected twists and turns in a season — from injuries to underperformance and overperformance and sheer luck — that make handicapping baseball, even at a season level, a very difficult task. A boatload of variables are at work, so to me this kind of retrospect minimizes the challenge the FO faces. It’s pretty fucking easy to say “don’t play Brandon Wood” now, isn’t it? It’s almost as easy to say “make Mike Napoli the catcher” after watching Mathis solidify his historic career.
So what would I have done? On Reagins’ side, nothing at all. Instead, I’d make the players perform at their expected levels. But that’s why they play the games, and this year we lost.
If there had been some really controversial move in the off-season, then I think there’s a legit argument to second-guess the GM now. But going into the season, the team looked good on paper. Maybe not as great as we had hoped, but certainly good enough to win the division. They just sucked donkeys on the field.

But going into the season, the team looked good on paper. Maybe not as great as we had hoped, but certainly good enough to win the division. They just sucked donkeys on the field.
(And with Collapso and Eybar on this team that last sentence brings new meaning)
Who’s to say that Brandon would have sucked that badly if the rest of the team was playing to their capabilities? Much of the “suck-fest focus” fell on him and, IMO, unfairly so.
What has Rivera been smoking? Is he sick? Is he hurt? Does he have a disease? Something just ain’t right there! “I can’t see!” Really? Ya think? Then you shouldn’t be out there!!!!!!
Stupidity intertwined with more stupidity, game after game. Just DUMB DUMB DUMB baseball. It is like Eybar rubbed off on them instead of the other way around. I am dead serious here. How many times this season have you just sat back (when done cussing) and said, “that is one of the dumbest plays I have ever seen in baseball?” More times than I can count…(Torii, Torii, Torii)

Prospects, Prospects, Prospects
Our minor league system is poor. We need to move Rivera, Abreu, Matsui for prospects and start over. We also need to sign Carl Crawford. Our starting pitching is fine and I’m a big believer in not signing expensive, free agen relievers so we’ll need to fix that in house.
None of those 3 are going to bring the prospects we would actually care about
Matsui has a month left on his contract- do you think ANYONE wants to give you a prospect you would care about for a month of 2010 matsui?
Abreu costs a lot for not a lot of production and it is looking like he’ll be around for 2 more years at nearly 10 million a year. No one will give us prospects unless we pay a good portion of the contract.
Rivera is unpredictable- one year you get a .310/ 25hr guy, the next you get a .270/ 15 hr guy. Thats gotta be a hard sell to most clubs. With his defense tanking, maybe we could get a couple A ball guys for him because he is so affordable though.
by Balls and Strikes on Aug 29, 2010 8:54 AM PDT up reply actions
More speed. Better defense. Less drama/better performance from the 'pen. Better catching.
How to do this? With a depleted minor league system? I really don’t know.
Signing Crawford at the right price is one option that helps offense, defense, and overall team speed. But then it will also cost a high draft choice and a long, expensive contract. Is a combination of Pettit/Bourjos a better long term option? Maybe. Willits? Doubtful, but give him a chance over the next month as a lead-off hitter.
Bullpen? Keep trying with the guys we currently have on the roster. But Rodney for closer? Scary thought.
Get rid of Mathis and cycle between Wilson & Naps. Konger? He gets injured as ofter as Izzy. I’m not convinced he’s a long term solution.
I don’t know if these suggestions will turn the team around. Texas has a nucleus of young, speedy reliable guys on offense and a decent SP staff and bullpen. They will be challengers for the next few years, barring injuries.
I actually would be curious to see how willits does hitting first
He posted a high BA is first season and hes pretty patient at the plate. I couldnt see it being dramatically worse than what aybar has done
