Angels Trade Brian Fuentes to Twins for PTBNL
As reported and confirmed in numerous media, the Angels have traded closer Brian Fuentes to the Minnesota Twins for a player to be named later. Here on Halos Heaven, EPIC DEAN posted the FanShot Scoop.
As reported in numerous media outlets, the Angels have zeroed in on a few prospects with upside in the Twins organization and are holding meetings with scouts to decide on the player.
Here is a recent look at the TWINS minor league system - does anyone there catch your eye?
The semi-reliable Fuentes tossed 93.1 innings as an Angel. He ranks 4th all time as an Angels reliever with 71 saves and his 48 Saves in 2009 is the 2nd most in franchise history.
Jordan Walden and his 101 MPH heat would seem the logical choice to be closer, so of course the Angels will be going with Fernando Rodney in save situations for the remainder of the season.

Next year should be interesting...
I’m looking forward to seeing how the team looks next year.
ABOUT TIME.. WE PROBABLY WOULD BE ONLY 1 GAME BACK! HAHAHAHA!

Lol
Texas will take him to be a left specialist.

Wrong
Unlike just about every other member of the bullpen, indeed, unlike just about anybody not named Weaver, Santana, Pineiro and Napoli, Fuentes actually did his job this year, by and large.
Hey, that was pretty funny.
Am I the only one who didn’t fall into the sar-chasm?
I love this team.

PTBNL gets traded A LOT
Must not be a very good player, no smoke without fire.

So, bets on when Rodney blows his first save?
I’m thinking tonight.
Never
He’s too good to blow a save.
by TheQuestforMerlin on Aug 27, 2010 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Never...
we won’t ever hold a lead again this year, thus nullifying the need for a closer.
I love this team.

It definitely won't be Hicks nor Revere
But the enthusiasm here is nice.
They have some projectable arms (it's the Twins, they love developing their pitchers)
So any of them would be nice (i.e. Salcedo, Bullock, Bromberg, Manship or Gutierrez). We won’t be getting Gibson. Unless miracles do happen.
Basically, I want a SP. I’d take one of the toolsy hitters though as consolation if thats how the cookie crumbles.
by TheQuestforMerlin on Aug 27, 2010 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions
I doubt we're going to be getting a projectable SP...
…for six weeks of a LOOGY.
From your list, Salcedo or Bromberg are very unlikely. I think a Bullock or Hermsen is more likely. I don’t think Gutierrez has much value, and Manship seems too much to hope for, but who knows.
I wouldn’t put it past Reagins to get us something we can’t use, like a Chris Parmelee, just due to the Chino Hills connection.
I'm hoping the Twins do a "Dodgers"
And give up a wee bit too much for a RP. Especially one we considered our “closer” {i.e. more valuable than a regular relief pitcher1}
Come on Raegins… I still believe…
by TheQuestforMerlin on Aug 27, 2010 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions
I'll take Billy Bullock.
He has some control issues. but is definitely an “upside” arm. Probably only a year or so away from the show.
Yup
Would add to our collection of young bullpen arms

Or Anthony Slama.
I could almost see that happening. He was born in Orange, SoCal kid, a bit over the hill for a prospect, but definitely of use.
Well, I'll take him purely for the name and potential puns when he inherits the closer role (as anyone with that name rightfully should)
But those walks… kill… me…

Whoops wrong fella
Thinking of Shooter Hunt with the walks I think
by TheQuestforMerlin on Aug 27, 2010 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions
He's definitely been lit up in his first cup of coffee.
But the underlying fundamentals have been sound.
A 26 yr old from Orange County, #39th round pick for the Twins, some control issues — seems like what we should get for Brian Fuentes. Especially, as he’s likely to get B Type status in the off-season, and earn the Twins a sandwich pick.
Twins fan here
but I occasionally lurk on this blog (I have a favorite blog for nearly every MLB team for some reason). I’ll add that Slama makes sense, if only because the Twins obviously have never trusted him. He was repeatedly passed over by younger, worse players long after he’d proven himself in AAA. I don’t know why someone in the Twins organization doesn’t like the guy, but someone doesn’t, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he was your man.
Yeah his stats look nice
I’d take him fo’ sure. As a AAA pitcher currently, he can compete for the bullpen next year with Walden and Kohn which would be really good. Rebuilding the bullpen back to its early 2000s heyday hopefully.
I don’t know what happens with the option for Fuentes in 2011, if that carries over or not. I doubt the Twins would offer arb, as surely, Fuentes would accept it (as it is likely to be quite high).

Another look at Slama from a really awesome Twins site.
Nice breakdown of prospects there with a good dose of video. Would be sweet to have a similar sidebar here at HH, and I’m sure rghan could do it.
I thought we did?
(goes off to check the front page). Although if we could get some video of guys that would be great.
I’m feeling Tyler Robertson as a LHP guy we could move into the bullpen… Also from Cali…

Hey let's not all trash Rodney for closer...
You gotta be winning a game to bring him in anyways. Not like we’re doing too much of that.
On a serious note though. I hope we shake off Rivera and Matsui too. Here’s hoping. Any contenders out there want the reigning World Series MVP? He’ll help you win I promise!
Any time you think you have the game conquered the game will turn around and punch you right in the nose.
Mike Schmidt
He wasn't that good
of a closer. The riff on him in Detroit was that he always gave up the maximum number of runs possible without blowing the game. His numbers that year weren’t very good, and the Tiger faithful were calling for his head.
Good analysis.
Never been a Rodney fan. Not an issue with personality, just performance. He’s a very lucky guy, and his salary reflects it.
Sarcasm. Hello?

i still like Rodney, I think he will step up, go after it, and get the job done.
At least he is more intimidating looking than Fuentes.
I hate the Texas Rangers
Is it too late to include Mathis in the trade?
All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.
Good deal

Well Fuentues.. congrats on making yourself look like an idiot..
“It was funny. I felt like I was pitching on the road quite a bit,” Fuentes said. “I came in to a lot of boos, but the fans here come out in droves. They’re here to be entertained. They’re entertained one way or another, through my frustrations or through my success. I felt like I’ve given them a lot more success than failure.”
You know that failure? the one that cost us a legit chance at the world series?

Oh come on, there was a lot more that cost us a chance at the World Series than that pitch to A-Rod.
The circus defense for one, Kazmirs complete dud of a start, etc.
If he doesn't give up that HR,
They win that game. Changes the outlook of that series, IMO.

You want to win a ballgame...
…play better. If a game is decided by a HR or by a blown call by an umpire, that means there are other things you could have done before that could have won you the game, such as flubbing a double play, dropping a fly ball, hitting a pop-up with the bases loaded, etc.

The Ninja says the club won't need to look for a closer in the offseason
"We feel good about Fernando and what he can bring in the ninth inning to close out games," Reagins said.
Be afraid, be very afraid!
the horror ............... the horror .......... the horror
Not afraid
If he fails, then we can look to Jepsen or maybe Walden. I’d rather do that then spend 5-10 million on another veteran closer, money that we need to spend on either Carl Crawford or a big bat.

I don't want a big bat
I want reliable hitters that can get on base and score runs.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Great move
Fuentes was everything I thought he’d be…a definite liability. World Series caliber teams don’t have guys like Fuentes closing games.
yea they have them pitching mostly against lefties
like the Twins will likely have him doing.
Ok...I just got home...
and Funtesarous got traded? Ok, good, he sucked, but who is gonna close? Rodney? He sucks too…I dont get it…what the hell am I missing?
So then should i drop Fuentes from my fantasy team and pick up Rodney Dangerfield?
Now stuck in Colorado Springs

Good riddance!
I’m not sure the Wierd Beard is any better than the Trash ‘Stache, but at least we’ll get a player for F-Bomb and not have to risk offering him arb in order to have a chance at a draft pick, or not offer arb and not get anything at all.

Interesting...........last Angels' trade I remember with the Twins
involved a left handed reliever, also. (J.C. Romero).
The Twins picked from our “list”……….Alexi Casilla.
When the Twins are involved, it's always interesting
to read what Aaron Gleeman has to say.
This stuck out:
Assuming the player to be named later is no one special this is an ideal stretch-run pickup for the Twins
This one caught my eye, too:
PTBNLs always make me nervous, but as long as the prospect proves palatable this is a sound move and in fact adding a quality arm so cheaply makes me question trading Wilson Ramos for Capps even more than before.
We haven’t been on the receiving end of the PTBNL in my recent memory. However, I still remember how much it hurt when we learned who we sent to the Rays.
