Reagins "believes"

He damn well better. He traded a useful piece to a team in a pennant race. I am pretty sure teams do not trade us relievers in pennant runs for free.

FYI

The Minnesota newspaper is reporting we might get cash.

Also MIN traded their best prospect for Capps so I would hope we get something of value. Fuentes has a higher K rate than Rivera Pappelbum, and others of note.

Im not saying I want their number one prospect but look at the history of relievers being moved.

I guess
we had too many good closers this decade. Is the “PTBNL” another one of those slap hitting infielders? I guess the Halos can’t have enough of them.

PTBNL

I’m sure we asked for a second baseman with a .300 OBP and 5 HR-a-year power. You know, to build on a strength. Never have too many of those guys around.

And, in keeping with the spirit of the Angels' trAditional offense:

No Halo shall ever get a hit off of Fuentes. Ever. Anywhere.

Fuentes is no big loss

Rodney aside, I think Walden, Jepsen, F-Rod, and Kohn can serve as a nice young bullpen core for the next few years. Buying another overpriced closer on the FA market is not what the Angels should be spending their money on this offseason. Some offense should be the priority.

by The_Question on Aug 27, 2010 10:37 PM PDT reply actions

Jepsen needs to learn to trust his location on a 95mph fastball,

and stop worrying that only a 98mph fastball can get a guy out. Hell, perfect location on an 86mph fastball can make for quite a career. Just ask Jamie Moyer.

by Stirrups on Aug 28, 2010 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I think

Jepsen’s problem is more than just location. His fastball just doesn’t move. Major league batters will hit a straight fastball no matter how fast it’s coming in.

He deserves a little more credit

I mean, he led the league in saves last year and he did shut the door on Boston in the playoffs last year.

Good luck.

To be fair

he gave up a homer to A-Rod that most trackers indicated was one of the luckiest of the year…a flyout in 29 other places.

He GROOVED an 0-2 pitch

Know your surroundings. I don’t care if he was pitching in a stadium with 600 ft walls. Why throw that dogshit pitch on an 0-2 count

I'm not trying to defend him

i’m over the guy…done with him. He’s dogshit.

But that was a fucking pop-out.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 28, 2010 10:21 PM PDT up reply actions

And it was A Rod for crying out loud

that’s what he does. He torched Joe Nathan in a similar spot. If he had given that HR to Gardner, then I would be pissed.

He did a good job for us and I think that a year of \rodney will have us longing for him IMHO.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

Regarding the PTBNL in the Fuentes trade

http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/Twins_Insider.html

“Don’t expect a big name player going to the Angels in return for Fuentes. I asked someone with the club if someone like Juan Portes could be the one dealt and was told it was someone of that caliber.”

Here are Portes’s stats: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=3B&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=457542

god those numbers are so horrible.

great pickup by the twins if thats the case… fuentes can be used as a situational lefty, greatly increasing their run in the playoffs.

Article states FUentes to be a type A free agent...

Not according to most recent Elias Rankings, but if he is, then we F’d up. I would happily take 2 draft picks for FUentes.

it is irrelevant, we get nothing.

there is no way we’d offer arb. However we save almost 2 million, and we get a player. Even if the player turns out to be a dud, it was all we could get.

How come when players go to Texas they revitalize their careers? could it be the roids?

by Sinatrasratpack on Aug 28, 2010 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Quite frankly just the salary relief from dumping our $9 million meatballer is enough compensation

but if the Twinks want to throw in a nebulous prospect with about as much chance of success as your average lottery scratcher, then we basically got something for nothing.

Would Love to See More Humility from Fuentes on the way out, but.....

Am I the only Angel fan in the world who is thinking maybe the guy has a point. I’ve been a diehard Angel fan for 30 years, and they are by far my favorite team, but I am honestly disappointed in the way Angel fans treated Fuentes prior to his departure. Fuentes completed 71 of 82 save opportunities (87%) for the Angels. To give perspective on what that % means, 8 out of 24 closers this season with at least 20 saves have a better save % than that. Doesn’t sound that awful. In his final two years, K-Rod saved 102 of 115 save opportunities (89%) for the Angels. Not much of a difference. In the last 3 playoff games K-Rod pitched in, he entered a tie game, and in each case, the other team took the lead for good off of him. But yet Fuentes is horrible because he made one bad pitch to A-Rod in the playoffs. A pitch which frustrated the daylights out of me, but it was the only mistake he made in the postseason, as he registered 3 saves.
Why did K-Rod not get ridiculed the way Fuentes did (and does)?
Make no mistake…I don’t blame people for being frustrated about Fuentes’ decision to comment on the fans, he was paid a good wage by those who booed him, but what bothers me is how he was treated before that. Frankly, it makes Angel fans look bad in my opinion. Fuentes is still one of the better closers, even if his stuff doesn’t have the look of a great closer…but who cares about looks…in sports, results are all that’s important.

by JWbruin on Aug 28, 2010 10:38 PM PDT reply actions

Yankee fans boo their players if their beard is the wrong length

Ok, not really, but welcome to being on a team that has become accustomed to success.

I actually don’t think Fuentes was too bad of a pitcher, I just don’t think he should have been closing. Bad performances always stick out in everyone’s mind and his two appearances in the ALCS last year were a disaster (Game 2) and a near disaster (Game 5).

And to be fair, I HATED K-Rod after 2008. I was suspicious of him after 2007, but sitting there, draped in an Angels flag and a cloud of rage in the upper deck during Game 2 of the 2008 ALDS sealed the deal. This was after blowing another key game in the 2007 ALDS. I never want to see that man in an Angel uniform again. He can’t handle it when it really matters.

Fuentes and K-Rod both failed in important roles when the lights were brightest. They may have been good at other times, but hat’s what people remember. As my drunken frinds and I say to each other frequently, “wear it.” If it really bothers them, they can just look at their bank accounts.

You are overreacting or making the wrong comparison between K-Rod / Fuentes

K-Rod got a lot of crap from Angels’ fans and from comments here, you’d think every K-Rod outing was time for some Tums.

On the other hand, Fuentes wasn’t even a homegrown guy – he was mostly effective, but some of his stinkers were pronounced and gave more fans ammunition when he had his share prolonged struggles.

If fuentes had gone 82 for 82, then fans would have been more tolerant – only guy that would get a free pass in the Angels’ bullpen would probably be of the Troy Percival ilk [regardless of actual performance].

I have no problem with Fuentes and didn’t realize how good he has been before the trade – I was even looking forward to perhaps seeing where Fuentes fit in the Angels plans for 2001.

Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?

by BBFan1 on Aug 29, 2010 1:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I would have hated him less if he looked like he cared

He came in so “meh, lets see what happens today” and then he’d blow a save- and not just blow it, but BLOW it- and say crap like “well, I just gotta turn the page, it was a rough night tonight, but I have to give credit to the opposition they made some good swings.”

I loved the percival mentality, you knew it bothered him when he failed and you knew he was going to give everything he had. Fuentes? I never felt like that.

by Balls and Strikes on Aug 29, 2010 8:27 AM PDT up reply actions

This ^^^^

Honestly, I wouldn’t have minded having Fuentes next year, but not as a closer. He never really seemed to have the “closer mentality”. He seemed to be pitching scared, for lack of a better phrase.

A true closer walks on the field, knowing…. KNOWING he’s going to blow away the opposing batters. Percy had it. Rivera has it. To some extent, even Papsmear has it.

To misquote Viper in Top Gun, “That’s pretty arrogant. I like that in a closer”.

"8 of 24 closers"

The problem is that the Angels (the team AND the fans) expect to be one of the best 8 teams in baseball. So, in turn, we expect to have one the 8 best closers in baseball. Really, we expect to have one the 8 best EVERYTHINGS in baseball. That’s how you get to the playoffs.

The thing about Krod that was different from Fuentes.

When Krod would blow a save, he would usually keep the game tied and the Angels would come back in the later innings to win the game. But when Fuentes blows a game which happens more frequently he BLOWS it and puts the game out of reach and the hands the opposing team a W. That is the difference between the two closers.

by jjackflash on Aug 29, 2010 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

It is closer than you probably think

From 2005 through 2008, when KRod held the full-time role of closer, the Halos were 10-12 in regular season games where Frankie blew the save. Interestingly, in 2007 the Halos were undefeated in such contests, going 7 – 0.

(While I am at it, the Angels went 3-7 in regular season games when Fuentes blew the save.)
