Angels Lose to Orioles and Lose Closer Fuentes
Final Score on Cub Scout night in Anaheim: Angels 1, Orioles 3
The Angels scrappy offense reared its deadly head tonight scoring their one run courtesy of a balk. Trevor Bell pitched a very solid game tonight giving up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, and 3 K's. Torii Hunter, once again, showed his mastery of the base paths getting thrown out by six, twelve, pick a number of feet... Essentially, he was thrown out by a long way (Little League Speak). Mike Scioscia showed his deft managing prowess starting the stalwart and dexterous outfielder Juan Rivera at first, who some might argue attributed to the 2nd run of the game. All in all the Angels gave another sub par effort that has defined this season. Sorry Trevor Bell.
Notes: Angels closer Brian Fuentes was traded to the Twins today for a PTBNL. According to Brian, Angel fans were mean to him.

What Fuentes meant
was that having to play for the Angels was mean to him.
I don't know who "Jaun" Rivera is
But he surely must be to blame. Perhaps Jaun is Juan’s evil alter ego, a la Bad Shields.
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.
There is no spell check for underachieving Angel outfielders/1st baseman... fixed

once again...
… The Angels make some shmuck no name starter look like Roy Halladay. Not that I really care about the loss given the whole shit stain that is the 2010 season, but still. Just another pathetic showing from these so called “big league hitters”.

5 hits?
I just got back home, checked on the box score, and was horrified. I know I shouldn’t be surprised these days, but just FIVE hits? Against a pitcher with a 5.55 ERA (which I guess was even higher before the game)? This team has a habit of making fifth starters look like Cy Young contenders.
I was thinking of a tactful way to say it
You win

On a positive note
Nice performance by Bell. I wonder if next year, when Piniero returns, whether Kazmir will be sent to the bullpen and Bell will be given the opportunity to occupy the 5th spot in the rotation. I’ve been thinking that Kazmir, with his pitch efficiency issues and strikeout capability, might not be better suited for the bullpen anyway. He could be the power lefty in the pen, to go with Walden, F-Rod, Kohn, Jepsen, and Rodney.
Kazmir's pitch efficiency issues
Are a direct result of issuing too many free passes – the last thing you want from a reliever. If he can get that under control he’ll be a successful 4. At least.

Howie?
Can’t blame him, scored the only run of the game. I can’t complain too much about Rivera playing first on a day when Napoli is allowed to catch. Beats watching Mathis play.

not sure why he was a choice?
Cupie scapegoat perhaps?
But the dude is having a great August. Team’s best player this month.

Light up the Halo for Nick!
More Howie please...
HK makes no sense at all...
I’m not a faggraphs disciple by any means, but they say Howie had the 7th worst win shares in the game:
http://www.fangraphs.com/wins.aspx?date=2010-08-27&team=Angels&dh=0&season=2010
Matsui led the shit-pack, followed by Torii, Aybar, Bourjos, F-Rod2, Rivera, Napoli, Abroo and THEN HK.
I love this team.

Anytime Juan is a choice
I pick him. I love Torii even with his horrible base stealing “attempts” but failure while trying will beat out failure by doing ****ing nothing any day for me.
So I have this rock in the back yard that does nothing but sit there so I named it Juan Rivera.
For the first time EVER
I left the game early… in the 7th inning. How pathetic is it that the only run we score is off of a balk. Juan Rivera please go away. And what the EFF was Torii thinking tagging up on that ball hit to left field? This team needs an absolute overhaul.
We tag-teamed...
I arrived in the 7th inning. I fail.
I love this team.

Torii was just trying to make something happen
The only problem is, these days whenever the Angel runners try to make something happen, they DO make something happen… something bad, that is. It shows how little confidence they have that the upcoming hitters are going to be able to move them over.
Torii was probably using the only strategy that seemed to work to get runs: Get to to third and wait for the pitcher to balk.
Rivera is at 1st because Gazoo went on the DL.
Otherwise it would still be Howie at 1b and Maicer at 2b.

Being that the Angels' offense went crazy on Wednesday, it was a given that they wouldn't show up Friday.
As seems to be the predictable pattern with this team, they’ll have one really strong showing every now and then just to trick us into thinking they’ve found their “groove”, then they take the day off the next time out. Especially if they are facing a nobody pitcher.
I won't be tricked until I see three or four wins in a row...
althought, I’ll be tickled pink if we see another 2-game win streak this year!!
I love this team.

Scioscia may not be the manager we thought he was. Another blogger made a great point on a differnet site: The Angels did well when Bud Black and Joe Maddon were part of the Angels coaching staff (they are both manging first place teams right now). Maybe Scioscia isn’t the manger we thought he was.
Bud Black and Joe Madden have not been angel coaches since 2005, 2006 respectively.
Pitching coaches and bench coaches both have input but Scoscia is the top dog and has been CONTROLLING the orgainzation since Stoneman stepped down and even before that. Scoscia has ultimate say. MIke Scoscia is one of the best managers in the game in the MLB today.

And what's with the musical chairs lineup every game? I think Soth has had a different lineup over a 100 times
Aside from injuries, what is the thinking behind shuffling the lineup EVERY game? If the Angels score 12 runs and certain players have a great game, that doesn’t seem to factor into his equation at all when he’s filling out the next night’s lineup card. The guy who hit 2 homers the previous game sits and the batting order is scattered all over the place.
I’m sure he would say he’s playing the “percentages” or something, but when the result has almost always been the team going from 10+ runs to under 2, at what point does it dawn that those percentages "just ain’t-a workin’ "?
Injuries and poor offensive showing ...
guys hitting below their expected levels. That’s what’s behind the gazillion lineups. This TEAM failed in its entirety. Failed.
I love this team.

Shocker
People boo’d a loser who grooved a 0-2 fastball to a scorching A-rod. Just a mind blowing revelation.

That doesn't mean its not bush league
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
We scored our only run against the lowly Orioles on a balk?

Against a guy with a 5.75 ERA going into the game...
FAIL.
