Poll: Why are the Baseball gods crapping on us?
I'd have made this a fanshot, but I can't figure out any way to attach a poll to one.
So here we go.
We all know that this season sucks. It's a given. Kendry's leg. Pineiro's ribs. The offense. The bullpen.
The question is what happened to make the gods of Baseball so pissed off at us to make this happen.
The poll includes the usual suspects, but I'm not going to put a "something else" option. Please feel free to post alternative explanations in the comments.
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

"Garbage in, garbage out"
The team did nothing to improve it’s talent level at the ML level from 2009. The freaking lowly Baltimore Orioles just swept the Halos!
Wake-up call: best not expect much different next year unless Arte decides to go into 2011 with a payroll over $150m.
Also..
…Reagins ans Soth crapped on the “baseball gods” first by running that weak-ass lineup on to the field.
It's because Scioscia has a man-crush on Mathis which is breaks the 11th commandment.
Thou shalt not have man-crushes on terrible catchers named Jeff Mathis who don’t belong in the Major Leagues.

Before all the injuries mounted
Jeff Mathis started 10 of the first 14 games before his wrist injury. That stupidity earned all the bad mojo that followed.

Do you remember how many HHers were all gung ho for Mathis when he started the season with like 3 hits and 6 RBI? It made me laugh to hear talk about how he was continuing where he left off in the ’09 ALCS and how he had finally figured it out.

I am proud to say,
I never drank the Mathis Kool-Aid, not during the ALCS, or ST, never. Even when he was on fire, earlier in the season, I figured it wouldn’t last. I had already seen enough of Mathis’ play to realize, he just isn’t all that good.

Light up the Halo for Nick!
More Howie please...
Couldn't hurt if we scored more runs
and actually support the SP. I believe run production this year will barely break 700 runs total. Even in years where we didn’t make the playoffs, we still had greater run production from those squads compared to this season
2003: 736 runs
2006: 766 runs
2010 (projected): 710 runs

I'm pretty sure it's targeted towards a younger crowd
I’m very happy being part of that target audience. It’s a fun show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, like most other sports talk.
Target audience is indeed skewed younger,
I used to think Jim Rome was cool. 20+ years ago that is. Then I realised that he too was a douche.
You too?
Back in the early 90’s, I started listening to Rome, and thought he was pretty good. Now, he’s the TMZ equivalent, in sports media. Rome is a constant suck up, who, much like Skip Bayless, was always picked last in any pick up game.

And if it is skewed to a “younger demographic” – that’s fine. As a professor (a young professor, BTW) I can tell you that that ass-hat probably would relate to the current college-aged student.

Oh Boo Hoo
We won the division 3 years in a row, we have made the playoffs a near given for almost a decade. Its an off year, we’ll be back next year.
Anyway, I think it was just something that grew out of the massive changes the team underwent in the offseason. A mix of losing Figgy, Vlad, Lackey and Oliver and greater things being expected of guys like Aybar, Kendrick and Morales.
While I dont put much stock in “chemistry” I do think it takes certain roles put in the right places for that team to win. You need a few on base guys, guys to drive them in, defense oriented players a strong pitching staff and lockdown bullpen to win. Also having automatic outs in the lineup- Wood and Mathis- certainly doesnt help.

After being shut out for 26 of 27 innings by the worst team in the AL...
I am not sure we can blame the “Baseball Gods” on the Angels’ problems. Maybe it’s because onone on the team can hit. The Angels have now been shut out for 26 consecutive innings. What is the major league record?
I am a fair weather fan so the Angels better win!
The difference between this team and 2008
is consistency. We’ve scored 13 runs over our last 4 games. Not great, but looks much worse when 12 came on Wednesday and only 1 since. The 2008 team would have gotten 13 runs over 4 games and won 3 of them, with K-Rod racking up 3 saves.

As much as Scioscia sells the fact that our offense has been the problem,
I suggest that a combination of three things occurred:
Our relief pitchers did us in early and often: Shields, Fuentes, Stokes, Palmer. Not that they didn’t have their positive moments, but collectively, their timing was very, very, bad. And, unfortunately Kazmir has caused more trouble than it has been worth overall. I think Darren Oliver has been our biggest loss.
Psycological Weakness.
Like a 1996 Jim Abbott, everyone kept waiting for the star player to perform up to his capabilities (Brandon Wood), which never happened. That kept everyone back on their collective heels and threw them off their game to the point where there was no rhythm and no momentum. Try as they may to fight back from the inevitable, the loss of Morales was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. Aybar can’t function properly without his hero Vlad there to frolic with. Kendrick presses too much because he feels the need to carry the other underachievers. Napoli can’t see straight if someone is breaking his concentration by being on base. And, everyone knows that there is no one at AAA SLC capable of coming to bail them out.
Age-Delayed Recovery from Injuries. Hunter and Rivera have been slowed by previous injuries; they’re losing in a race with age to recuperate. Abreu aged noticeably over the winter. Matsui is toast. Izturis stays injured. Mathis’ wrist injury halted his most prolific stretch as a major league player.
But why was the team able to rally in June...
…to the point we were 9 games over .500 on July 1?
Even with;
1) The early failures of the bullpen;
2) The injury in late May to Morales;
3) The worthless performances of Wood and Kazmir (season long);
4) The same crap-assed baserunning we’ve witnessed in previous seasons;
4) The toughest first half schedule in the majors…
..the team had rallied to 9 games over .500 and 3 games behind Texas on 7/1.
It was at this point the season went into death spiral. We lost 8 of the next 11 games to the Royals, White Sox, and A’s to finish 4 games over .500 at the ASB. They haven’t looked competitive since that stretch of games.
Perhaps the better question is how did THIS team manage to get 9 games over .500? That is the real mystery to me.
Were they playing over their heads through June, or under-performing now? Or a combination of both?
......and why can't they score runs?
The troops rallied after Kendry went down……good for them!
The bull pen is being fixed.
Some part if their psyche finally gave in when each saw another bitter disappointment caused by one of the three subjects I mentioned…..and Texas just kept winning.
Interesting in my mind is that John Lackey won three games against the Angels, the Orioles swept us (Buck Showalter is 100% behind that for all the years we kicked his ass when he was in Texas), and Vlad’s Rangers have won more than they should have…….all fairly demoralizing. Think of what if we had won 3+3+3 more games in those series mentioned.
Hud used to preach, “Hitting is contagious!” Well, the Angels haven’t caught the fever. But something is wrong there mentally; they can’t just will it done, and sometimes their exasperation has seemed to turn into panic (base running gaffs…stupidity).
Like I heard Terry Bradshaw once say on TV when he was asked why the Pittsburg Steelers weren’t able to win again after four Super Bowl Championships from ‘74-79: "You can’t win if you don’t have the horses."
Right now, assuming Morales returns to form, I’d guess that we’re certainly one horse, probably two horses, possibly three horses, short of a championship team.
by wumbug on Aug 30, 2010 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
My best guess...
…it’s a few big things and lots of little ones.
BIG STUFF
Kendry’s broken leg, Wood, Mathis and Kazmir providing negative value to the team.
LITTLE STUFF
Atrocious base-running. Aging fielders. Untimely errors. Just about zero clutch hitting.
In previous seasons, Scioscia was able to will this team through tough offensive stretches with this template:
- Scratch out an early lead through speed or clutch hitting.
- Rely on SP to keep the game close.
- Turn the game over to a dominant bullpen and closer.
- If all 3 of the above fail, rally late in the game for a lead or victory.
How often have we had a lead this year? How often has the team scratched out a run or 2? How often has this team rallied from behind for a victory?
They have been rare, especially over the last 2 months. Not much spark or enthusiasm. In years past, you could almost feel a rally coming. This year, they just seem hopeless.
So I agree it’s mental weakness or demoralized psyche. This team seems either flat dead or dead flat.
You can add "overall bullpen suckage" to the "BIG STUFF" tab...
I love this team.
by Downing Rules on Aug 30, 2010 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions
Even with semi-good horses we can win. We need foul balls, not HRs.
Our team in 2002 wasn’t that stacked. I pitched a lot when I was younger. I used to dread those hitters that, every time I put a good fastball into their hands, or sank one a little outside, they didn’t miss it or ground out, they fouled it off…. over and over and over. An inning or two where each batter makes you throw 8-10 pitches can really cook your mind and your arm…. and shows everyone how your pitches look so you are more hittable in innings 4-6. It sucks.
Frankly, watching Brad Fulmer take 15 pitches to eventually fly out… followed by Spezio requiring 10 more pitches, etc. was far more impressive than a 1 run Napoli blast. Every foul ball, every spare pitch, defenses had to move, managers had to relay new signs, etc. we just burned teams out to the point that, even if we were down in the 5th, our bullpen would hold it, and we’d come back and win.
Though I’d like some more power, we don’t need Bautista or Dunn or a power hitter in left to do that. We need a bunch of guys to play Cricket in the off season or something…. learn to guard the plate. I never see any one “fight it off” in our line up anymore…. at least not more than one pitch.

Among other things I thought that made 2002 special...
…and that Scioscia seemed to prefer was a platoon system. We had lefty-righty platoons at 1B, 2B and DH. And yes, Spezio, Eckstein, and Fullmer did guard the plate better than anyone on the current roster.
That team also had scrappy guys that…just got the job done. Let’s bring back Eckstein and Erstad!
That was 8 years ago! Damn!!!
I take full responsibility
There’s this project that I’m suppose to be working on, but I’ve put it off until now. If the Angels played any better and actually made the play-offs I would never get it done. and if so, is there a way we can legally force Jeff Mathis to take a DNA test to prove that he’s really one of Steve Garvey’s illegitimate bastards and not Scioscia’s long lost son so we can finally be rid of him?

This started out as a reply to ballsandstrikes above. Decided it was too lengthy of a rant and moved it down
“Not winning it all last season” was likely what caused the baseball gods to turn on us. We were built to win last year…
I am a huge believer in “roles” and the “execution” of roles as part of a team. Part of what got me banned from LL was for telling the M’s fans they were not utilizing the players they had in their proper “roles.” I digress.
Angels 2010 roles:
- no leadoff role player (no one stepped up and NO, Abreu is not a candidate long term and neither is Eybar) NO TEAM “led by” Eybar is EVER going to have the team IQ to build a ginger bread house much less win the AL West. As a supporting player he is fine, as a leader or lead off man, forget it!
- realistically, no true #2 hitter on our team except for possibly Gazoo or Collapso (stop with the Howie is a #2 hitter BS people until he learns to lay off the low outside slider)
- Abreu is the ONLY real #3 hitter on this roster and I say this reluctantly. This team does not have a pure hitter, someone who can strike fear into opponents and hit .310 – .320 with (at least) gap power on a consistent basis. This left with Vlad.
- Kendry is the ONLY real #4 hitter on this roster (STFU Torii, no you are not anymore, if you ever were)
- Torii is the ONLY real #5 hitter on this roster (barely)
- In his current age/health, at best, Matsui is a #6 place hitter on any team
- Angel management gets an F- for their handling of Wood (last 3 years)
- I said it before this season started, “the Angels OF is OLD. Flyouts will become singles, singles will become doubles, and doubles will become triples.” I totally blame Reagins for this. I also give him some credit for making the really tough call to move Torii to RF (though he s/be in LF) and bring up Bourjos
- Who knew Rivera was going to go to the Bahamas and not return this season? Anaheim police should have an APB out for him and his streaked hair or at least his lost vision.
- Catcher. God, where do you start? FAIL, FAIL, AND MORE FAIL! The mismanagement of Naps/Mathis/Wilson only tries to rival the mismanagement of Wood.
- Bullpen woes in general. I fully expect this to be the season the Twins win it all. Reason, they have an incredible bullpen. Bullpens are what made the Angels incredible the last decade. Sorry Scoty, it was fun while it lasted dude. I really like the potential bullpen for next season, especially with Kaz as our situational/token lefty (tongue firmly planted in cheek).
- Bench? Who threw this collection of players together? Total and complete FAIL on Reagins’ part here. 3 catchers on the roster for most of the season? Q? REALLY??? I understand the need for a Willits on your bench. Gazoo too. From there? This season’s bench has been a clusterf*ck.
I keep reading here that this team will win next season. Really? This team does not have a 1, 2, or 3 hitter. Crawford and his .349 OBP in one of those holes? Okaaay, I suppose, but does that make this a lock to win the division? Only if the bullpen reverts to “game over” after 6 and our starters stay healthy, because this lineup is flagrantly flawed.
Now I am going to ask you 2 questions to end this with. Do the Angels really have the players who can execute their “roles?” Or, given salary restraints can the addition of 1 player really fill all of these “role holes?” Secondly, given the mismanagement of several players and this year’s roster, do you really want Reagins leading this charge? I have given Reagins a complete pass up til now. No longer!

Next season...if I am the opponent manager...
I’d walk or pitch around Kendry nearly every AB and see what the rest of the rot can do to beat me…
If I'm the opposing manager...
I’d call up a new junk lefty from the minors just to face the Angels. Guaranteed CGSO every time! My work here is done.
I love this team.

why baseball gods are crapping on us?
beacuse we gave GMJ $50 Million dollars for 5 years……
Mark Gubicza says "hi"
0-1 with a 25+ ERA in 4.2IP … all for $1.6M in 1997! ($2.1M in 2010 dollars according to this Inflation Calculator)
And now he’s demanding that we stay within our mechanics and change our eye levels dozens of times a day.
I love this team.

Why people listen to the tv broadcast is beyond me...
Terry is pretty decent despite having Mota beside him frequently.
Frankly, it is often really enlightening to get the opponent’s announcers perspective on the Halos…and some of the opponent’s announcers are really good and even know what they are talking about…you do have to be selective cuz some are really lousy too…hello skanks and W/Sox
Radio is always off one way or the other from the tv broadcast
And watching with the sound off is creepy/borderline stalkerish. MLB.TV isn’t worth the price of admission for anyone who lives in market, which is the majority of Angels fans, so opposing announcers are just not available. Lack of viable other options is why people listen to the tv broadcast.
Actually, I'm pretty sure that the audio portion is still available despite location/blackout restrictions...
I live in Sea so you are correct on the rest of that however.
This season I have found that there is minimal lag between mlb.tv and mlb.audio so I am able to listen to one and watch the other w/no distraction. Works well for me.
That was a complete thought
The fact that MLB.TV isn’t worth the price of admission for people in the home market means that a listening to opposing announcers option just isn’t feasible.
BE. CAUSE. YOURE THE ONE.
get it out of my head…..please……
