After watching, no, make that suffering tonight's miserable loss against the Orioles, I found myself asking that seemingly unanswerable question: What is wrong with this team? There have been several attempts over the past couple of weeks to pinpoint the answer. Is Mike Scioscia Derelict? Is Juan Rivera Worthless? Is Anaheim Minor League? These and countless posts about trades and line-ups litter this blog site, but without producing any satisfying answer to this all-consuming question: What is wrong with this team?
Patience, dear reader, is all that is required now, as I believe I have hit upon the answer! After the abysmal performance by our favorite team, I flicked the remote until I found the Discovery Channel- Shark Week! That's not the answer. While watching divers bait and evade great whites, a commercial came on. I don't know what product was being hawked, but the music that filled my livingroom hit me upside the head like a giant hammerhead going in for the kill. And here it is:
Why do you build me up (Build me up)
Buttercup baby just to
let me down (Let me down)
And mess me around
And then worst of all (Worst of all)
You never call baby
When you say you will (Say you will)
But I love you still
I need you (I need you)
More than anyone darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (Build me up)
Buttercup
Don't break my heart
I'll be over at ten
You tell me time and again
But you're late
I wait around and then
I went to the door
I can't take any more
It's not you
You let me down again
Baby Baby
Try to find a little time
And I'll make you happy
I'll be home
I'll be waiting beside the phone
Waiting for you.
Why do you build me up....
To you I'm a toy
But I could be the boy
You adore
If you'd just let me know
Although you're untrue
I'm attracted to you
All the more
Why do I need you so Baby Baby.....
ooh ooh ooh
Why would any team have its fans sing a song during the game about being built up just to be let down? About being "messed around"? The song concludes with "Although you're untrue I'm attracted to you all the more". Has Arte been playing us for suckers all along?
I say we as fans DEMAND that Arte stop this nonsense, and eliminate this song from our recently added trAdition- it's plan bad luck! I have a vague memory (please help me, HH members if any of you has any details of this) of Don Sutton getting rid of a guy that use to show up at the stadium dressed in an ape costume because he said it brought bad luck. If Don Sutton can get rid of the ape, we can lobby to get rid of this gawd awful song. Who's with me?!
