Torii Hunter Headbumps Ump; Mea Kulpa Earns Dual Ejection
Final Score in Detroit: Angels 4, Tigers 2...
Okay okay okay, Torii Hunter was expressing how bad a strike call was to sight-challenged home plate umpire Ron Kulpa and the brim of his plastic batting helmet tapped against the ump's thick skull. The whiner umpire used this ridiculous pretext to toss the gold gloving all starring community activisting rock and rolling hula dula face of the franchising cleanup hitting Right Fielder.
Immediately following Hunter's ejection, manager Mike Scioscia's on-field protestation earned him an early shower too.
Hunter had homered in the first inning to give Jered Weaver a 2-Run cushion.
Peter Bourjos earned his first major league RBI in the 2nd inning.
Weaver struck out 9 Tigers and allowed 1 ER in 7 IP.
Fernando Rodney and Brian Fuentes each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Solid game by the Halos!

If this was old school Halos Heaven POTG voting, Torii would win 90-10
Used to be more, how to put it, spiritually based. Just an observation.
I voted Hunter
I guess I’m old school. Been around since before the SBN hostile takeover.

It could just be that Weave pitched another great game, stopped the bleeding and finally got some support.
I’ll take a solid outing from our #1 that get’s us a W every time over an 8th inning ejection. looked to me more like Torii just blowing off his steam. Didn’t make much if any difference at all to the outcome of the game.

Voted Weaver for POTG, but re-thinking it should be Torii. I mean, spitting in the umps eye and a home run should be worth something.

I'm a Rangers fan
but I’ve always cheered for the Angels (or the AL West generally, in those years when the As would take it) once the playoffs started. I really don’t know what to do with myself this year, with something other than minor league player development to cheer for in the late summer months! :)

Wait a sec
I just looked it up to be sure, but the Angels were DOWN by a game in that strike-shortened season. And the Rangers were only 4 1/2 back of the Mariners that year. How does 1995 support your cause?
by K. Scott Bailey on Aug 6, 2010 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions
1995 was strike shortened too
Except at the beginning of the season instead of the end like 1994.
BOURJOS BOURJOS BOURJOS BOURJOS
You're right.
My bad on that. I got the two years mixed up. Why do Angel Fans not like to talk about 95? That was when I was still in school, and before I moved to Texas, so I’m not sure what happened.
by K. Scott Bailey on Aug 6, 2010 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions
Imagine the Angels caught the Rangers at the end of the season this year
And then proceeded to win the 1 game playoff. That’s pretty much what happened to the Angels in 95.
Ouch
I had completely forgotten about that comeback by the Mariners. Wow. Sorry for the bad memories…
by K. Scott Bailey on Aug 6, 2010 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions
To this very second,
that is still the biggest claim to fame and crowning achievement that the Mariners’ fans feel in their collective hearts.

THIS
is a point about the scenario that I had never heard before….
It’s interesting to also note that if the Mariners had blown that playoff game, because the Angels played so badly that the M’s opened up a three-game lead at one point, the ’95 Mariners would rank 13th on this list.
Very Interesting!
I don't hate the Rangers.
Sorry to say. They haven’t earned my hatred yet. It may take a few years of real rivalry for them to get there.

String together more winning seasons, then it might be a real rivalry.

that the players (ex-Kinsler) are not obnoxious. FO is not arrogant. The fans are actually nice and respectful. Hard team to hate.

LSB isn't so bad
I mean, I do more lurking in the comments section here (and at AN) than I do there, but the fans over there are just pumped that the Rangers are finally good. That, and they just can’t seem to resist Rev’s blatant baiting! :)

Ok, so they don't have Bucky as GM anymore to tell their pitchers to throw at guys
and they don’t have Vicente Padilla who would throw at guys’ heads without being told to. Half their team belonged to our team within the past few years, so you may have a point, aside from Kinsler.

Ump sucks
Three questionable strike call and then he moves towards both MS and Hunter during the argument. Toss him if you need to but it’s the umpire who’s supposed keep his cool when there’s a argument… that guy was loosing his mind.
Weave did a great job tonight (pretty much like every other night for him this year)
But Torii has to be POTG today. He’s probably gonna get fined/suspended for showing the umps that we take no mess.

he was once good.
We can’t be sure which one we are getting back.
So ... why was Tori upset?
gameday shows all three pitches as strikes.
Tori Hunter looks like the biggest douche when he tries to act hard.
At least he didn’t push the umpire in the back.

There was something said earlier in the game...
Torii said the ump was acting “like a drama queen”
OUCH. That’s gonna be some bad blood in the future, although Torii also said that this ump had thrown him out when Torii was a Twin …
I love this team.
by Downing Rules on Aug 6, 2010 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions
The 1st definitely was not a strike
The 3rd was borderline. The ump overreacted to Torii’s challenge, and then Torii overreacted as a response. I think these guys have a history too.
I think your too quick on douche assessment, but different strokes for different folks I guess.
all 3 are strikes on game day
was he not calling it that way earlier in the game?

Pitchfx has all 3 as strikes too
I was going off of what I saw while watching. But shit, I’m ok with our players showing emotion now and then. I hate seeing a lackluster environment on the field.
Torii's lower end of his strike zone is at 1.75 feet...
so strike three was a ball. I contend that this strike zone is bunk as well.

But IIRC, the umpire wasn’t giving that pitch most of the game.

BOURJOS BOURJOS BOURJOS BOURJOS
Was that Torii?
We laughed a little bit when we heard that the balls had been thrown onto the field, and Terry Smith didn’t confirm who had done it while we were listening, but we might have missed it when we were getting out of the car and moving stuff into the cabin. (Every time we are forced to go down the hill we do a little shopping because some things are simply not available here, or are extremely expensive.)
