Top 10 Most "Premium" Players of Recent Memory (2004-2010)

Now how exactly do you classify a "premium" player?  Well Big Mike classifies Jeff Mathis a premium player, and we all know that Mathis is a worthless player to have playing everyday. Being a premium player is the exact opposite of being a Panther, so instead of being Blame of the Game, how about being "Premium" Player of the Game? Just an idea. So anyways, to make this list you must have been worthless to this team by either being paid to much money, not living up to expectations or been kicked off the team for disiplinary reasons. This is not a list you want to be on.

  1. Jeff Mathis: Yes, Mr. Premium himself, Big Mike's son has been as worthless to this team as anybody because of the amount of playing time Scioscia has given him, and the fact that he can't seem to hit .210.... well you get the point.
  2. Mathis, Jeff: Yes, this guy has been so useless, that he qualiffies for the top two spots on this list. By the way, he has a .200 career batting average.
  3. Gary Matthews Jr: Coming off his only All-Star season in 2006, the Angels decided to give this guy a 5 yr, 50 mil contract. Lets just say that this was by far the worst signing the Halos have ever made, because he was a part time player and never hit over .252. He didn't even play gold glove callibar defense, and was probably the nail in the coffin to Bill Stoneman's GM career. Very premium.
  4. Jose Guillen: Hit .294, 27 HR and 104 RBI's in 2004 and had he not got in a fight with Big Mike, he could've helped the Angels beat the Red Sox in the ALDS that year. What a jackass. He did help us get better though, beause we got Juan Rivera and Macier Izturis for him from the Nats.
  5. Brandon Wood: Heir apparent to the 3rd base throne after Dallas McPherson had injury problems, and has done worse that him. Has a career avg of .178 and has a .207 OBP. Probably the Angels biggest bust, and thats saying something since we have had some colossal busts.
  6. Raul Mondesi: In May 2004 he left the Pirates for personal reasons, and had his contract terminated. 8 days later he signed with the Angels. After playing just 8 games, and batting to the tune of .118, he tore his quads and then rufused to go to therapy. The Angels then released him in July of 04. Just a pretty useless signing.
  7. Josh Paul: This is the guy who ruined our chances of going to the World Series in '05. The Angels 3rd string catcher ruined our chances of going to the World Series, just think about that for a second, and while we can't completly blame it on him, he was the main reason. I'm pretty sure Bobby Wilson would've tagged Pierzynski.
  8. Steve Finley: Signed to be the Angels starting CF in 2005, Finley was coming off a year in which he hit .271 and hit 36 HR, so you would expect similar numbers the next year right? Well he proved us wrong. He hit a mere .222 in 112 game and only hit 12 homers. If he couldve hit .252 with 20 Hrs we might have made it even farther in the '05 playoffs, oh wait no we wouldnt, Josh Paul ruined those hopes. Well anyway, he was traded to the Giants for Edgardo Alfonzo, another worthless player.
  9. Aaron Sele: Signed as a Seattle castoff in '02, he never had an ERA under 4.89 and the lowest BAA he had was .289. He was a decent workhorse at best.
  10. Shea Hillenbrand: Hillenbrand was a jackass in Toronto, and the Angels tried to aquire him then. He was traded to the Giants. They ended up signing him in the '07 offseason anyways. He got booted out of Toronto for writing comments like,"This is a sinking ship" and "Play for yourself" on a white board in the clubhouse, which got him in a fight with then manager John Gibbons. I don't see why we wanted him so badly. After hitting .254 and not playing very much he said, "If I'm not going to play here, give me enough respect to trade me or get rid of me", and that's exactly what they did.

Other Notables: Jeff Weaver, Justin Spier, Macier Izturis (2010), Jose Arredondo,  Erick Aybar (2010), Brian Stokes, Ben Weber, Jose Molina, Ryan Budde, Edgardo Alfonzo, Estaban Yan, Scott Shields (2010), J.C Romero and recently released :( Robb Quinlan. :''''(

Steve Finley

My favorite topic here in 2005

I'd rank Finley higher than Hillensuck.

Hillensuck was kind of a panic acquisition, after Juancho broke his leg in winter ball.

Edgardo Alfonzo

The dreck left after Steve Finley. $8 mil for 50 abs and an BA of .100.

Yeah but at least Finley bounced a bit in 2006.

Alfonzo just sucked.

The Rev's righteous Finley hatred may be clouding his memory

Financially the deal was a wash. Frosty the No-Man: STEVE FINLEY has been traded The 2007 option was a mutual option, so there was no way any team was picking it up.

Scott shieelds should not be up there.

He was a beast until this year. He is far from the ranks of wood and mathis

I wonder if Mathis saw your screen name on this post

and thought “alright, finally I have a fan who is going to post stuff about bad players and leave me out of it,” then he sees hes at the top of the list, and the only player mentioned twice. he left here more confused than mathisrocks5 is about his feelings for Mathis.

WTE must be higher. Much higher.

That assbite single handedly cost the team more than half a dozen wins and a playoff slot only to turn around and grab a WS ring for his dick-headed self, making snide comments blaming the franchise he screwed into an early grave.

  1. The definition of “premium.”.
  2. Yup.
  3. God, that GMJ deal is still going to hurt for awhile.
  4. Guillen is a little crazy, but he gave the Angels some value in his time. It’s not like the Angels gave him $36 million to play below replacement level like the Royals did…Oh wait, they gave #3 on the list $50 million to play below replacement level. Still, I’m surprised I’ve never heard anyone second-guess the decision to suspend Guillen. He was the second-best hitter on that team, and they could have used his bat in the playoffs. He’s mostly behaved himself since (except for the whole PED thing, but who wasn’t on PEDs in 2004?). What really happened?
  5. What a shame. But at least the Angels haven’t stuck with him through arbitration like #1 and #2. Um, how long until Wood hits arbitration, again?
  6. Eh, I hardly even remember this now.
  7. Why are we still blaming Josh Paul for the Pierzynski Incident? It was such a bullshit play, they even revised the rules to prevent it happening again. Besides, that game was tied in Chicago, meaning the White Sox had a better-than-even chance of winning in extras anyways. And Josh Paul had absolutely nothing to do with the next three games, in which the Angels got outscored 19-7.
  8. No argument here. It might be fun to add up all the dollars the Angels have spent on center field since Erstad became a cripple. Then again, it might not be.
  9. Yeah, this contract was garbage. The Gil Meche of the early 2000s.
  10. Hillenbrand’s problem was not attitude as much as it was being bad at baseball. If only Jeff Mathis had the same problem.

This franchise is going to have a hard time outdoing itself on GMJ. The money wasted on Mathis is just teaspoon-full compared to the volume of rectal discharge that was the GMJ deal. Developing situation: the Angels could lose a shitload of money on Torii Hunter too. And Bobby Abreu, now that you mention it. I really, really hope Bourjos learns to hit soon, because this team just does not know how to get value from free-agent outfielders.

by Suboptimal on Sep 8, 2010 12:40 AM PDT reply actions

Guillen

Guillen would not have helped against the Red Sox in the playoffs, because the odds are we would not have even been there. The 2004 Angels made a fantastic final week comeback to steal the division from the A’s, and they did it all without Guillen. They seemed like a team that was happy to be rid of him.

And then in the offseason, Stoneman made one of his best trades getting Izturis and Rivera for Guillen. So I would not change a single thing about how the Jose Guillen experience worked out for the Angels.

"That boy is our last hope" - Obi Wan Scioscia, as Francisco Rodriguez left for the Mets. "No, there is another" - Yoda Reagins.

by RallyMonkey5 on Sep 8, 2010 11:26 AM PDT reply actions

EASILY his best trade

I doubt I’m forgetting one as he only made a few during his tenure…

Vaughn for Appier was solid, and he played a big part in winning the wild card that year, but the money ended up being wasted either way.

Adam Kennedy will forever go down as a Halo legend for taking down the Twins in game 5 but it was still an awful trade for one of the best center fielders of the era. The trade also foreshadowed Stoneman’s weakness for flukey ERA seasons (see Sele, Yan, and Carrasco).

He also traded for Alex Ochoa to be Salmon’s caddy down the stretch. Am I forgetting one?

Oh man.

this post begs for someone a little older than me to really get into the TRADITION of the subject. I mean, i was just a kid, but the Mike Port era was awesome for useless players. And he was really good at trading major league ready prospects for old corpses. Here I’ll start….

Dante Bichette (and his roids) for Dave Parker (and his cane.) Willie Fraser….
…. and so on.

Good lord...

…one of the worst trades EVER by the Angels (I believe it was Port, but it may have been Bavasi) was Mark Clear, Carney Lansford and Rick Miller for Rick Burleson and Butch Hobson.

We traded 2 of the best players developed in the organization at that time (Clear and Lansford) for an SS that was mostly injured (Burleson…he played in a total of 253 games for the Angels) and a 3Bman that had ONE horrible year (a grand total of 85 games) with the team before he was traded.

Lansford won a batting title – the year he was traded!! – for Boston, and had 4 consecutive years of batting .300 or better with decent power stats.

Clear went on to pitch 8 more years in the majors, with moderate to good success.

I can’t think of a more lop-sided trade for the Angels. They were completely hosed.

Huh?

Outside Salmon he might have been the team MVP in ’95. Even in his crack-tainted season he was mostly productive. Honestly, that situation was just sad.

Uh

Maybe as a cheerleader? His pitching left a lot to be desired. Classic example of Stoneman being fooled by a fluky year in a pitcher’s park.

Does any other name case so many people to draw a complete blank as to anything he did here? he did have a nice smile though.

How many of you remember Ken McMullen?

35 years ago, the Angels aquired him from the Dodgers. That lasted for two years before they sent him back. For some reason, which I now don’t recall, he used to be my favorite player. He had a knack for clutch pinch-hit homeruns (well a few here and there).

A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
