Vlad off the bench?
Its looking more and more like Vlad won't be returning to Texas. Designated Hitters are a dime a dozen in MLB, but what Vlad means to the Halo organization, plus how the fans feel about Vlad. Giving Vlad a 3-5M contract per year for 2 years. Kind of like over paying for what he's done. Plus he'd be a great insurance policy if another accident happens like what happened to Morales last year.
Would Vlad consider a reduced role, a part-time DH and part-time late inning pinch-hitter?

Please, no.
We need another DH like we need another catcher.
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
It's a shame he really cant step foot on an outfield anymore
Because we could really use the depth but we’ve spent our way into a corner already with old outfielders and catchers with crap defense who have to DH
RIP Nick Adenhart
Doubtful he'd accept the role
Even more doubtful that he’d be right for it. We’re talking Vlad Guerrero, not Manny Mota, and Vlad most likely needs his regular hacks to stay sharp. Playing as an occasional pinch-hitter and as DH every three days wouldn’t get it done.
"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason
All true
But feeling nostalgic and hopeful that Vlad finds a good spot. I will continue to root for him on unless playing against the Halos.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
I blog about the Angels at First2Third.net
Nostalgia
The Masada for loopy sports fans. At least there’s nothing about Figgins coming back and being our lead off hitter in this shot. Vlad will only clog our roster. Mathis is almost more useful. He just doesn’t warm the cockles of your heart the way a broken down shell of Vlad circa 2012 will.
Most Ex-Angels are ex-Angels because they aren’t very good, can’t help us much, and are over payed. Just accept it.
The further into this Dark Winter we get, with all the desperation and failure to sign B+ talent for 142 million, the more Thelma & Louis we get about things.

Given that this could be a lost season anyway--
Even though we won’t really know that until at least into May—why not salvage some of it and bring Vlad back for a farewell tour? Best case scenario he repeats at least some of his first-half 2010 performance and we get a great boost. Worst case he provides some good leadership and draws more fans to the park, and further solidifies the Angels’ chances of getting Vlad into the HoF as a Halo and not an Expo.
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.
Better yet
Let’s not.
I appreciate the way you’re raising the white flag already. That’s great.

I'm not raising the white flag.
Note that I said “COULD” and further “we won’t know that until at least into May”—probably not even until later.
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.
Oh, that's different
The semantic difference makes you Norman Vincent Peale.
The decision to sign Vlad to boost attendance would need to be predicated upon the idea that the season is a lost cause before Opening Day. It makes even less sense to sign him if the season is going poorly “into May”, and he would be drag on the lineup if the team was doing well.
Besides which, the HoF will decide which hat he wears into Cooperstown, and stunts like signing him for a valedictory year in which he shares the DH role with two other players would do nothing to advance the case for his being an Angel.
Any way you look at it, it is a bad idea.

So, essentially, what you are saying
is this.
Longtime fan of what has become the State College Angels of East Anaheim
Gotta love that enthusiasm!!!

Scioscia: I have a radical idea. We crapped all over our own offseason plans anyway, we could flip a giant bird to all the experts and simply make our fans happy.
Reagins: How?
Scioscia: [hesitates] We’ll re-sign Vlad for millions.
Reagins: ‘Scuse me Sosh? You said re-signing Vlad was bad!
Arte: Re-sign Vlad…
Reagins: You’re gonna endanger us, you’re gonna endanger our clients – the corporate season ticket dicks, who paid us in advance so they can resell their seats to Red Sox jackassery …
Scioscia: Not necessarily. There’s definitely a very slim chance that he won’t suck and won’t cost us our miniscule shot at the playoffs.
[pause while they consider this]
Reagins: [slaps Sosh] I love this plan! I’m excited to be a part of it! LET’S DO IT!

Yes! Now THAT I can see and get behind!
Although I can see that exact scene having already played out over Mathis…
Light up that halo! RIP, Nick.
If nothing else, he'll bring his mother's cooking back to the clubhouse.
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
Altagracia's cooking FTW.
This is the space where you write a clever quote or something like that.

I like Vlad.
I’ll root for him else ware. But if we give him a chance to repeat some of his first half magic, which he won’t, those are ABs that Napoli/Abreu won’t be getting, or Abreu will be toading it up in LF. BAD! Leadership, I thought Hunter and Abreu provide that. HOF hat, I don’t care, I want to win, that is a pathetic reason to give a broken/breaking down DH 2 years to play on a team full of slappers and DHs. No old men! Nil. None. Nada. I don’t care if we can get Ozzie and Jose Canseco for $5 and they’ll draw fans by battling to the death in the Chevy Cheap seats. No.
