Lyle Spencer's take on the trade
Basically he's a 3 time All-Star, don't worry about his road splits, don't worry about his left/right splits, don't worry about all those years of turf on his knees because he'll be on grass now, don't worry about the money because it's Arte's not yours.

If Lovable Lyle actually wrote for a newspaper...
I’d wipe my Aase with his articles.
This is the space where you write a clever quote or something like that.

I don't think you'd want to wipe your ass with fluff pieces
Wouldn’t that be like wiping with cotton? Probably wouldn’t help too much.
The goggles!!! They do nothing!!!

Is it ironic
that our new LF cost just a bit more than the cost of that acid scene?
His headline: "Seriously, what's not to like?"
Which indicates, above all, his fundamental lack of seriousness. Check out this logic bomb:
The Angels just landed a three-time All-Star at 32, with four years on his contract, for two players who might not have had starting jobs but will get shots to play every day in their new environment. You have to be reaching hard not to like that.
What the living HELL? First, Rivera had a starting job in left field, unless Reggie Willits was given a promotion I wasn’t aware of. Second, much as I love Mike Napoli I want him to get his shots for MY TEAM, the one I root for. As for “three-time All-Star at 32,” that has described many a player who has no business being on a baseball field, starting with the retired-for-three-years Ken McBride back in the day.
This is also precious:
The big talking point is Wells’ huge contract, which wouldn’t have been an issue back in the day when it was the game that mattered, not economics.
What is he even talking about?
as a person who has been arguing for the positives of this trade.
I am again amazed at the incompetency of Spencer as a reporter. and he makes everyone who is in favor of this trade look bad.
I have absolutely no idea what the economic statement means or is supposed to mean. He is an idiot.

I am pretty sure that what he is trying to articulate there is this:
The main thing that everybody is chattering is about is not his talent, but his salary. Once upon a time we used to worry about player talent, and leave player salary to the owners.
What he is advocating is that we should put ourselves back in that old-timey mindset and leave the finances to Arte. So everybody should just shut up about the money and focus on the talent.
I don’t actually know what his motivation is for taking this position, but maybe he feels that we are too naive to understand the impact that an overblown contract might have on player personnel flexibility for any team not named “Yankees” or “Red Sox”.
Such silly children we are. We should just all go back to boxscores in the dalies and leave the important stuff to management and Lyle.

Why is this so shocking and upsetting to everyone?
Short of protecting the initiated, we should expect nothing less from Spencer. He works for a league owned information service paid to espouse the “Company Line”.
MLB.com’s purpose is to build excitement for the upcoming season for each and every franchise. Independent thought and intelligent arguments should not be expected.
Spencer is no different than a staff writer for the Soviet controlled Pravda during the 1980’s. The only difference is he probably won’t get sent to Siberia if he criticizes the team’s front office but maybe toledo…..

Lyle Spencer is to baseball
What Wilfred Wong is to wine.
I know there’s a chance absolutely no one out there will get this reference, but if just one BevMo regular is reading, it just might click.
"Mike Scioscia?! Didn't you get radiation poisoning?"
"I sure did. And it gave me super managing powers!"
This was worth a chuckle
Predictably, the Angels’ acquisition of Vernon Wells at the expense of Mike Napoli and Juan Rivera has the critics howling. They do that largely because that’s what they’re paid to do, and you can’t really fault a person for that.
True enough. So there’s no reason to fault Lyle for doing his job either, which is to spin the Official Spin. I have to admire him for trying, since he has his work more than cut out for him.
The comment thread for that article is even more consternating. These people vote?

A paid beat writer for the Angels is musing about paid "critics" on other sites.
Ain’t that cute.
Of course, “critics” are under no pressure to favor one team over another — they certainly aren’t asked to report back to the hive mind with rhetorical honey.
