Go ahead Beltre. Sign with Texas. But you will miss out playing with "premium" teammates!

Any time you think you have the game conquered the game will turn around and punch you right in the nose.

I don't see it that way

Young is being paid a crapload of money and he wants a ring. Torii moved to RF to make room for Bourjos. So were the Angels jerk offs for asking him to do that?

Well. . .

they already asked him to move to third to accommodate Andrus. They may not be jerkoffs, but they’re sure jerking him around.

The dude is a statue at 3B

never really figured out the transition… Was a poor defensive SS and a poor defensive 3B. Where do you put him at this point when you have a ground-ball slanted staff.

Truth be told he should have never been sent to 3B and should have been either traded or put in as DH last year.

it is always better to move a player a year to early than a year too late.

If Beltre does sign with Texas...

how can the Angels expect to compete in the division? If Beltre does sign with Texas it might make Vladdy more affordable but we don’t really need a DH. I wouldn’t mind seeing Figgy return to Anaheim to lead off and play 3B (especially if the Mariners pay part of his salary).

This seems like it is pretty much a done deal...
The Rangers have been engaged in contract discussions with Scott Boras, Beltre’s agent, since the Winter Meetings. No agreement has been reached, but general manager Jon Daniels and Boras resumed serious negotiations Monday night with the goal of wrapping up an agreement.

It seems odd that the Rangers aren't learning from their WS experience that pitching is essential

and if their rotation regresses at all from last year it’s gonna be ugly for them down the stretch, with or without Beltre.

though i guess you could say that they tried hard to get Lee.

by river-z on Jan 3, 2011 10:00 PM PST reply actions

my question is what is worse

failing to sign Lee and then doing nothing in a weak SP FA market or going in a different direction as a plan B?

Seems like the lack of a real impact SP outside of Lee in the FA market and KC’s desire to move Greinke to the NL left Texas with few real options. Outside of maybe Pavano there really isn’t much avaliable at this point in either the FA or trade fronts…

JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook

by laxtonto on Jan 3, 2011 10:05 PM PST up reply actions

yeah it seems like their options are even more limited than ours

Good pitching is harder to acquire than respectable position players.
Hypothetical Rangers with Lee (and not Beltre) seem way better and more well-rounded than with Beltre (and not Lee).

Young as utility & DH is certainly better on D than Vlad (which is saying very little), but Beltre + Young vs. Young + Vlad doesn’t seem like a much of an upgrade on offense.

by river-z on Jan 3, 2011 10:11 PM PST up reply actions

The difference in Beltre and Young's D is pretty huge

going from slightly below average to the best defensive 3B in baseball right now is a pretty huge jump.

I am not surprised to see Texas stay away from Vlad after his falling off a cliff the second half of the season. Combine that with his complete inability to play in the field he is a much greater crapshoot now than even two or three years ago.

The question won’t be will the contract be worth its value in the years 1, 2 and even 3 but the back end of the deal. It is interesting to note that Young’s deal is up around the time that Beltre might to begin to show chinks defensively.

Lets also not forget that the average $$ per WAR is still rising along with the average player salary, median salary and number of 100 M payrolls league wide. Those characteristics tend to help lessen the blow of bad contracts on the back end.

by Rev Halofan on Jan 3, 2011 10:34 PM PST up reply actions

it seems like they are content going with what they have, which is pretty much

the same thing they rolled out last year to start the season (Feldman, Harden, Lewis, Wilson, and Hunter).

Now they are just plugging in Holland and Webb for Feldman and Harden, which is hard to say with a straight face is any noticeable downgrade (Feldman and Harden were both bad last year).

If they’re in it at the trading deadline, I’m sure they’ll look to any potential sellers with a SP to move similarly to what they did with Lee last year.

The ABC 11 o'clock news in Seattle

announced that the rumored offer from the Rangers is $90 to 96 million for 5 years. I haven’t looked for a source yet.

THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!

by opiejeanne on Jan 3, 2011 11:37 PM PST reply actions

If that's true

I wouldn’t be so surprised. This offseason the value of free agents has gone up, and I just wish Arte and Tony were willing to see that that and spend the money, but they didn’t. This hurts the Angels so much, and it’s going to be frustrating seeing him in a Texas uniform next year.

By allowing the Rangers to get him, they gave up the division most likely and screwed themselves for years to come at third, unless a trade happens, which I highly doubt. Texas missed out on their big free agent, so they went to the next big one available, realizing they had to do something. Wish the Angels FO thought that way. And I really don’t believe it’s overpaying that much. The guy has had a better career and had a better season than Werth last year.

Sigh…

by Halo fann 2002 on Jan 4, 2011 8:29 AM PST via mobile reply actions

If the latest updates are true, and the Rangers are on the verge of signing Beltre....

Then it would appear that we have no viable plan for 2011. Although I never thought that we had the payroll space to add two huge pieces (like Crawford and Beltre), I did think that we would add one of them, not only because we have pressing needs at 3B and LF but also because our first round pick is protected.

It appears that our strategy is to go ahead with our current roster, re-evaluate the team’s standing at the trade deadline, and then decide whether to buy or sell. The upside is that we should be able to spend next year when we shed the contracts of Kazmir ($12M), Matthews ($11M), Pineiro ($8M), Rodney ($5.5M), and Rivera ($5.25M) — a total of $42 million. The problem is 2011 could be bleak, and if we have another losing season, we may have to pay a premium (like the Nationals did with Werth) to attract top talent.

One other silver lining: expectations should be lower than any point since 2002, so I doubt many people will be disappointed by the result.

by Brody on Jan 4, 2011 8:30 AM PST reply actions

Paying a free agency premium seems to be the de rigueur this offseason

All the big names got more than expected. The history of FA signings is littered with successes and failures. Only time will tell on the 2010/11 crop. Time to hope for a crafty trade for the Angels methinks.

I knew we should have been on Uggla or DeJesus, goddamn. Still plenty of time though.

by TheQuestforMerlin on Jan 4, 2011 8:45 AM PST up reply actions

I agree that there is still plenty of time, but I think options are kind of running out.

It seems like every player there have been trade rumors about has been traded or isn’t actually available.

Or maybe I’m just being a little pessimistic right now, I don’t know. I think the contract Beltre got is more than he’s worth and I would probably be upset if the Angels gave it to him, but it still really sucks to lose one of our major FA targets to Texas.

by ~MMP~ on Jan 4, 2011 8:54 AM PST up reply actions

I wanted Beltre and would be willing to (over)pay as the Rangers are/have

I think he would have provided good value over the duration.

But yeah, pessimism is bad. And rife. I’m always hopeful though, just as I believe a healthy Izturis at 3B (please!) would actually be quite good for us.

by TheQuestforMerlin on Jan 4, 2011 9:06 AM PST up reply actions

Not sure there is plenty of time left

Or, perhaps as MMP says, there just aren’t that many options left. At this point, I don’t see us doing much. I think that the most likely scenario is that we will sign a veteran to play left field (Damon or Podsednik) or to DH (Thome or Vlad).

The other 13 hitters that will make the team on opening day will be the ones we have right now — Abreu (LF/DH), Aybar (SS), Bourjos (CF), Callaspo (bench), Hunter (RF), Izturis (3B/SS/2B), Kendrick (2B), Mathis (Ca), Morales (1B), Napoli (Ca/1B/DH), Rivera (bench), Willits (bench), and Wood (bench).

by Brody on Jan 4, 2011 9:04 AM PST up reply actions

Yup, realistically Texas have to be favorites, although...

Outside of their interleague schedule in 2009 they weren’t all that awesome. It’s just that we were crap. I also don’t think the Rangers have actually improved. Perhaps a little. That SP staff is just risky and not all that good… Plus no Vlad who killed it for them last year (obviously replaced by Beltre, but you need to look at Beltre less as the 2010 version and more as the .260-.280 hitter judging by his career).

A vet is a definite possibility. A Thome, Manny, Vlad or Damon could possibly be okay, as long as he comes cheap, whoever it is.

by TheQuestforMerlin on Jan 4, 2011 9:10 AM PST up reply actions

It feels as if we are getting the leftovers.

A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.

by angelslogic on Jan 4, 2011 9:16 AM PST up reply actions

Problem with room-to-spend is that we have so many arb-eligible players

Most in the Majors this year, probably some high number the next, too. Our young core is increasingly expensive and so far not good enough.

by mattwelch on Jan 4, 2011 9:03 AM PST up reply actions

I agree with you completely

Having $25 million come off the books this year did nothing for us, because we are in for some big raises, particularly to Kendry (who, I believe, made less than $1 million last season). Still, we have substantially more money — an additional $17 million — coming off the books next year than we did this year.

by Brody on Jan 4, 2011 9:09 AM PST up reply actions

Kendry should only get a modest raise

considering he only played 2/5 of last season. thats pretty much the only silver lining to that injury.

But the greatest illusion the [Ninja] ever did, was make you believe he wasn’t there.

Players don’t report until February. I’m not sold the Angels are done moving pieces. And even if they are, I do not fear the 2011 season. Maybe I’m a hopeless optimistic, but I feel the Halos with the current pitching staff, returning Morales, and a year of Callapso will be better than last year. Adding Abreu leading off, Aybar batting 9th, using Napoli more frequently, will all benefit the line up.

If the Giants can win it all with their best hitters being Aubrey Huff and half a season of Buster Posey (with bad years from Sandoval and Rowand) then so can we!*
