This off-season has obviously been disappointing to say the least. The bullpen has seen some minor improvements, however there have been no upgrades on offense yet (I'm still holding on to hope that something will happen). So my question to everyone is, is it time to rebuild?
I refuse to believe that there is no room for optimism, holding on to hope for multiple breakout seasons, and a return to form by some of the players. We are all frustrated but if you have been a fan for as long as I have, for as long as most of us had it is hard to give into the idea of not contending especially with our recent success. However there is always a time that teams have to rebuild, and that time for the Angels may or may not be right now.
With the young talent on the Rangers it will be a challenge to win the West even with an addition of an Adrian Beltre type player. I believe that it may be time to try and restock the farm system. I don't know much about our minors but from what i have read on this blog there is definitely a lack of strong young pitching more specifically starters. Also with the obvious lack of offense at third base and left field would it behoove the Angels to trade some of their current major leaguers to find young bats and young arms.
It is uncertain what players like Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar, Alberto Callaspo, or Mike Napoli could bring in a trade, or what teams would even be interested. I think that unless we see a return to form by Kendrick or Aybar that we should try and move them. From what I've read there may be a few minor league middle infielders that may be ready to take over in the future. Napoli obviously gives huge offensive production, and a little flexibility with his new found first base ability, but with Hank Conger, Jeff Mathis and Bobby Wilson all fighting for a job it's not clear how much playing time he will see. I also think he could bring quite a bit in a trade with the right team. Of course there is always the possibility of packaging these players to try and bring in an offensive presence to help the team contend in 2011, but I am not a big fan of packaging 2+ major league players for one person.
So please give me some feedback it would be great to know what you guys are thinking because my hearts torn between wanting to win now, or admitting defeat and plan to win in the future.
