Let’s All Go Jump Off A Bridge
I keep hearing "you can kiss my season seats goodbye," ... "Arte is an idiot," ... "Reagins needs to be fired," or "we didn't get anything done this off-season."
It seems like we have all the bandwagon fans jumping ship - I say good riddance to you!
I can't say that I have been a fan since '75 (born in '84), or that I know every player that has come through the Angels system. I can say that I have followed the team everyday, from 1999 until today. From the OC Register's sports page while on my way to school, to getting a text message every time the game had a score while serving in the Marines, all the way up to today, reading about the team when they don't play to watching when they do.
What I can say is that I love this team, no matter what.
I don't have season seats, because I can't afford them. If I could I don't know if I would because 81 games is a lot to go to. I do live close so I don't have to pay to watch on TV, I know some of the fans here do.
Clearly the fans are that, "fanatics" and I love that about sports; however, if you don't have a solution then shut up. Anyone can say what the front office has done is wrong, but if you can't come up with a way to fix it then just quit.
I live baseball everyday and know that anything can happen. Who is to say that Carl Crawford and Adrian Beltre actually perform as well as in the past? I feel they will but what if they don't? It is too much of a risk.
I can't sit here and say I would have done differently. When you offer the same contract as another team to a player, Crawford, and the player chooses them, there is not much you can do about it.
I would like to see Mark Trumbo move to 3B, or trade him for one. Regardless of the rest of the off-season, I am excited to see our new Pen in action next year, and horrified to watch the Juan Rivera / Bobby Abreu teamwork in LF.

But he has been playing some fall ball at the position, last I heard. I know they won’t play him in LF with Abreau playing there.

Uh oh
You’re not following the sky is falling line that seems to be dominating HH. Are you ready to be blasted?
I also am excited to see the pitching staff this year, then again I also believe the offense will be better than expected.

Someone has to hold up the sky for the few of us that have not succumbed to black thoughts.
Count me in with this crowd.
Trumbo is neither 3B material, nor trade bait for one
And part of the criticism here is of the apparent lack of Plan C. Oakland got two good corner outfielders for not much in return, and we got bupkus.
And Dunn.
Who cost markedly little compared to the rest of the top five bats on the market.
There were so many useful pieces not named Crawford or Beltre when this offseason started.
Dunn was the steal of the offseason by far.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
And Adrian Gonzalez
who went to Boston in a trade. A process that, for him and what the Padres were expected to ask, too many people around here scoffed at as impossible.
When all is said and done, and the list of players whoe moved are put forth, the results of this FO in that particular hunting ground can only be classified as failure.
Longtime fan of what has become the State College Angels of East Anaheim
Mixed Response Regarding this One
I will start with the positive side of things. I agree and am very excited about the 2011 season. There are a lot of really good things about this team, regardless of some of our holes.
1. Our pitching rotation is the best in the division. YES, better than the A’s, stop looking at the damn ERAs. I think Kazmir bounces back and has a much better year.
2. The bullpen is solid with the addition of Downs and Takahashi. Those signings are vastly underrated IMO.
3. The lineup is not as bad as we make it out to be. Callaspo, Rivera, Abreu and Aybar all have a great chance to produce at a much higher level than 2010.
I think we will win the West. Call me overly optimistic.. or as some of you who think you know everything there is to know about baseball… can call me stupid, but I believe it!
Now for the negative part. Yes, I am tired of the bandwagon fans too… but… we need them. How do you expect to maintain a 100M+ payroll if people are not in the stadium. You have only been around since 1999 and didn’t go through times where the stadium was empty and EVERY TEAM’s fans outnumbered Angel fans. The only good part was buying a really cheap field seat and moving down between the bases.
Texas improved their offense, but their rotations is weak!
Oakland has a strong rotation and improved their offense, but are we really scared of Matsui, DeJesus, and Willingham? I would argue we have a better rotation and comparable offense.
Do you really think we can’t compete with the A’s and Rangers? The Rangers will absolutely crush our offense, but our pitching will keep us in a lot of games.
Light up the Freakin Halo!
Well defined points.
I say, let’s Play Ball and see what happens. W/o Lee, Texas may be vulnerable and Beltre can still turn into a liability for them. As far as Oakland Goes, they look to be pretty competitive and I am sure they are looking to build on Last Season’s results. As for the Angels, I like our chances.
I won’t lie and say I thought more would happen this off-season, but that being said, what is done is done. Let’s see what happens when balls get pitched, batted, caught and thrown on the diamond. Go Halos!
if you don’t have a solution then shut up. Anyone can say what the front office has done is wrong, but if you can’t come up with a way to fix it then just quit.
you must’ve missed the 10 thousand or so comments/posts/tangents about how playing Napoli over Mathis would greatly help this team, or how getting rid of the BP roles would be a good idea, and instead focused on a post where a guy SHARES season tickets and now can’t renew because the OTHER PEOPLE aren’t willing to fork over the cash to do so.
overall, it seems like most people are pissed because with the bitter taste of a losing season still in their mouths, the team hasn’t done much to get better in its areas of need (mainly offense). this is understandable, especially after the lofty expectations that were created, whether by media hype for Crawford/Beltre, or by words possibly being put in Arte’s mouth. Either way, most of us bought into it. Not really our fault.
also, I would bet that 95% of the people who say they won’t be going to any games, or won’t get their MLBTV package are just venting and once ST starts will get that renewed hope that is there prior to every season, and they will be there, whether on the couch or in the stadium, come opening day.

Well said, Sir.
Once the season starts, this off-season will be a memory and the present will dominate our thoughts including actual game results.
I agree with everything you just said...
I feel that Napoli is an improvement offensively; however, I feel that a full season of Conger will be better then both of them together. Naps proved that he can hit for power, and that he is a streaky hitter. The catching situation sucks right now and I am not a fan of either of our main players, but I do feel that after the end of last season Conger is capable of playing on a regular basis.
As for the season ticket comment, it was not directed at AngelMike in any way, nor was it at anyone on this site. It’s from people who come through my work everyday and it bugs the crap out of me.

maybe you should have mentioned that this post wasn’t aimed at HH members, but more the people in your life who have commented on it. it reads like you’re saying it to us.
but I’m in the same boat, whenever someone sees my Angel hat they make a comment about how the team is going to suck this season. they are obviously casual fans since once I start talking about certain guys stepping up, the BP and other specifics, they get completely lost and have a look like they wish they hadn’t have brought it up. its awesome.

Mathis
All they have to do is DFA Mathis and some of the negativity will ease. The keeping of Jeffy Ballgame is boggling my mind like some of Mike Ports trades back in the day. If they would just admit that poop stinks and get it off the menu, I think a lot of us would stop wondering if the FO has gone insane or just stopped caring all together.
But apparently Soth and TR have watched Young Guns II too many times and understand the meaning of the word pals. Awesome cliches like “You gotta score runs to win a game.” still need to fall from Gubbies mouth… cause the FO still hasn’t heard it.
Still, the AL West will be a dogfight, and we’ll maybe have 85 incredibly boring wins. I love the Angels, so I’ll watch most of them and try and stay awake. I’m sure we’ll all pep up come the 6th 7th and 8th innings when our big splash free agents rear their heads from beyond the bullpen fence.

Don't confuse criticism with lack of loyalty.
Good fans fight for good results. If ownership and management are underinvesting and underperforming, fan fists should come down on their skulls like hammers. Otherwise we’re just a bunch of North Koreans on a 2012 Prosperity campaign.
In any event, there’s no real reason that someone should feel compelled to pay for season tickets or obsessively follow a team that’s boring to watch and fails to compete — just for the sake of self-petting “cred”. The fact that many of us stalk a losing horse is more pathology than healthy enthusiasm in the end.
A lot of folks here have offered suggestions and solutions. It’s disappointing enough when management doesn’t think like we do — though that’s fine, if they’re following a clear strategy — but it’s even more disappointing when they have no solutions themselves.
In this case, fans have every right to be pissed. I’m more suspicious of those that aren’t. This should be about fielding the best team possible, and one that’s entertaining to watch, and can win among the competition. If that’s what we get, it won’t be by design — it’ll be by fluke, and we’ll thank George Burns for that.

There's a difference between Criticism and Whining
There’s a lot of the latter going on around here and has since July ’10.
I’m not really pissed about the off season
Am I disappointed? Yes
Do I disagree with some of the decisions that were made? Yes
Its all about prospective. I love this team & have sported the colors since the mid 80’s & will continue to do so but I have other issues in my life that I’ll save being pissed off for.

Now I agree with moondoggy
Venting frustration and proposing ideas are the right of any fan. Being upset over what one perceives as a bad or foolish move is only natural if a person really does care about the team. That said, actually dumping a loyalty because of a losing season or worse, beginning to follow another team, well that thought is almost alien to me. No, Angles baseball has been in my blood since I was 10 years old, no way to get it out now.

Great post Turk.
It isn’t our job as fans to be the GM of this team. Offering advice is everyone’s prerogative, yet who in the hell believes that anything we say will ever lead to the FO doing something based on our humble comments.
I think it’s silly when someone says not to complain unless you have a plan to fix it, as if having a plan makes you a credible and worthy fan. I say bitch all you want, plan or no plan. Isn’t the ability to question authority a respected, if rarely used character trait?

I feel I might fall into this Whiner category
though I live 100 miles away and I am poor, so I have no season tickets to use as leverage in my bitching. Funnily enough, I never wanted Crawford or Beltre. In fact, I was far more angry about the Angels turning their backs on Vlad than I am about anything they’ve done this off season. Watching my little girl’s eyes well up with tears when I told her Vlad was leaving is the type of thing that leaves a bitter taste.
But really, the big problem I have, and the reason my posts are full of such venom for Arte and Co. is all the big talk. We all know by now what Arte said, and I could swear there was a quote from Reagins before he left for the winter meetings that he would “come back with somebody” and of course we know what all this big talk got us. I really feel betrayed by them both. And further, i don’t feel like either one of them are terribly bright. Shooting off ones mouth like this is something I’d expect from drunken fans, not the owner and gm of the team.
Obviously I don’t speak for everyone, but I really feel that the hate and “whining” wouldn’t be anywhere near the level it is if the powers that be had kept their mouths shut. Sure there would be a degree of disappointment, but nothing like what we are seeing now.

What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.
This is Roast Beef?
Here is my feeling on the subject that’s been going on for some time here on HH about the anger of those who post.
As someone that has been involved in the game and has been an evaluator of talent for a long time doing FA scouting and Pro Scouting I would be more upset by the FO telling its fans that the club can compete and has a chance to win. The club they went to spring training with not to mention the one they opened the season with had zero chance of winning. Please don’t tell me that they would have won had Morales not gotten hurt because we all know there will be injuries during the course of a season. Go ahead you can look it up I said it way back last year and even went on to say they would struggle to be 83-79 and 500 would be a good year for them. In fact Zulong challenged me about this. Speaking of Zu…where has he been? Hmmmm
The truth of the matter is they overvalued their prospects, and hoped that the big league staff that had done wonders before would get more out of the players. Problem with this thinking is they have lost some very solid baseball people over the last few years. The lost of Joe Maddon and his attention to scouting reports and detail cant be over looked. When Bud Black left it was a huge void. It would take one heck of an argument to convince me that the pitching staff has not suffered with his departure. I am not trying to blast the staff, but with another loss of a coach this season I am again left with the thought of another good solid baseball man has left the organization. Don’t get me wrong…its good that another organizations want your guys, and they think that highly of them to give them the the title of manager, but lets not forget that your only as good as those you surround yourself with.
The previous ownership had put together a solid organization and when ownership changed Arte did some good things early on. The fans liked the lowering of beer prices and so on, but lets be honest over the time he has been owner he has more then doubled his profit. The thing that should be questioned though is this….
Why the change in GM? Was it really the reason that was given, and why Reagins who some would not classify as a baseball guy, but someone that was more of a corporate guy. Again not my words, but from those that I know, and those that have worked for him in player development. Why is the organization now on their 3rd scouting director? They lost their international guy…sure it was because he decided to be an idiot and fudge contract bonus, but one heck of an evaluator of talent. This didn’t help the cause either
The truth is as long as they win more then they lose, and mix in some West Division Flags (meaningless in the grand scheme) people will buy into there being a chance to win the big trophy, and seats will remain full. Don’t forget for a second that Arte is a marketing genius and that is why he has been successful in business. He has been a marketing genius with the club. How the hell do you get the San Diego Zoo to be a sponsor? Arte has not lost money as the owner of the Angels and has shown his lack of willingness to spend during tough economic times.
I see no problem with anyone venting here at HH on the lack of commitment by the FO to improve a team that has no real star power…. my sympathy towards Tori (position change) Jared (plays every 5 day). For me the problem is hearing the skipper and FO say the team is strong / good. When it really isn’t. Stop feeding the fans shyte sandwiches and telling them its roast beef. I myself know the difference!

I’ll admit, this is one gripe that I have, speaking of marketing. Why do the Angels refuse to market Kendry Morales? This is a guy who was getting MVP votes his last full season. Do you ever see him on a billboard, or painted on the entrance to the stadium or see his jerseys in Sports Authoritys, or anything like that? It really seems strange to me. Is it because he’s a Boras client and they’re uncertain about hanging onto him long term? It just seems like if he was on any other team they’d be marketing the hell out of him….

The Best part about all this WHINING
is its because Plascke put words into Arte’s mouth
“It’s going to cost money, but our fans need to know what we’re committed to winning.”
He’s never quoted as saying he’d break the bank this off season
I play music for your entertainment
no, he said
“whatever it takes to return to the playoffs”. If you feel that 2 lefties are enough then you should feel he has done enough. I would point out that many fans and, by the tone of the articles written, the sports writers at large don’t feel he has done enough.
"Pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem".
Bullpen help might bete key to being in a position to win though.
Last season too many games were out of reach by the time the offense woke up. Perhaps if we have a competent bullpen, we might have a shot at pulling out a victory that was a loss in the same sitch last year. I am willing to embrace whatever help we can get on our side.
I also hope that the offense wakes up and STAYS awake for longer than a month at a time this season!

yes the Angels needed bullpen help
but they need a lot more. The Angels don’t have a lot of thump in their lineup, Hunter is going downhill, will the Cuban Missile be back to form, the catching and third base debacle…the one thing about Figgy was that he was a pure leadoff hitter, one to turn the lineup over. Can Prince Peter be a leadoff hitter?
Really
Then how come that line in the article isn’t quoted?
Plascke put words into Arte’s mouth

Yes, clearly
which is why Arte has come out and vehemently denied Plascke’s report and made sure all us Angels fans realize that his comments were taken out of context and that his word is as strong as ever…

Show me a direct quote from Arte
Saying whatever it takes to return to the playoffs, Plaschke used that to get everyones attention & get Angels fans excited and get more people to read his trash.
Apparently Plaschke did his job well and a lot of people fell for his ruse.
I play music for your entertainment
You are arguing semantics
Whether Arte said it directly, or was asked if he would spend what it took and he said yes is irrelevant, he did one of the two. If you truly believe he was misquoted or Plaschke made it up, then please tell me why Arte Moreno has never come out against the report? For me personally, if a huge chunk of my fan base was calling for my head and the national sports media was painting me as a cheap, dim witted, lying bozo over a mis quote, I’d be pretty damned upset. Further I would do whatever it took to make sure that everyone knew I was misquoted, or had words placed in my mouth. I find it extremely difficult to believe that Arte is some kind of silent victim in all of this.

Plashke wrote his opinion, that's what he gets paid for.
What’s Arte gonna do, come out and say Plaschke’s opinion was wrong, what good would that do? The story is already out there. Even if he did come out & say Plaschke’s opinion was wrong, what would your reaction be? I’m guessing something along the lines of oh he’s back peddling now, he never wanted to improve the team.
The only quote he’s given is the one that is above. Everyone read the teaser & assumed it was Arte talking.
I’m not thrilled with this offseason, but at least lets get our facts straight people.
I play music for your entertainment
Bill Plaschke does not get paid to report his opinion as fact
That would be an editorial piece. This is a news report. If he is falsely reporting his opinion as news he should and most likely would get fired. And I really fail to see how it being his opinion would stop Arte Moreno from coming out and saying he was misquoted or misunderstood. It’s very simple.
“The words used by the LA Times were the opinion of the reporter and not a direct quote from me. I had no intention of spending any money this off season, and never said I would. Bill Plaschke and the LA Times owe me and all Angels fans a sincere apology. Plaschke looks like a chubby Billy Joel and I hate his big dumb face”
Sincerely,
Arte Moreno

If he did that
Would it really make you feel any better about the off season?
I play music for your entertainment
At this point no
But earlier in the off season, yes it would have. I would have been willing to give him the benefit of the doubt back then. Now that he’s become a laughing stock and has been made to look like something of a shady character (because now on top of the “spend whatever it takes” horse shit there is “we never offered Crawford a deal” when it seems pretty obvious to everyone who isn’t a mongoloid that they did) no it would not make me feel better in the least.
I still, however, can not imagine a man in his position sitting back and not saying a word while his name is dragged through the mud had he not actually made the remarks. He comes off as a pretty proud and emotional guy. I really feel he would have come out and said something if he felt he was wronged in any way. Instead he came out and whined that he wasn’t the Yankees or the Red Sox… which to me further reinforced that he made the original remarks and was trying to back pedal. That’s just my perception though

I think management is doing the best it can. There are many other teams competing for the same players. Sometimes we get them sometimes we don’t. I appreciate passion for our team. I’m not here to argue with anybody. I’m just here to say I’m with the original poster. I will be a fan if we win, or we finish in last place.
