Shoemaker
Does anyone know about this guy and how does he compare to Richards and Chatwood?
Shoemaker got lit up in AAA
Since Richards and Chatwood pitched in the majors last year, Shoemaker likely will be pushing 27 before he gets an opportunity for the majors.
From Jeff Mathis' TOPPS card: "Jeff is a defensive catcher, but he can rake it when it counts." Jeff has a lifetime .199 MLB batting average
OTOH, Richards and Chatwood would likely have got lit up in AAA as well.
But they never got the chance — and they subsequently got lit up in the Majors.
Point being, a lot of people get lit up in the PCL, even good pitchers. Shoemaker only pitched four games in Salt Lake in 2011, and he arguably outpitched Chatwood and Richards in Arkansas this year — though he’s a couple years older.
I bet we see Shoemaker in some spot starts in Anaheim next year. Pitchers get injured, he’s very much on the depth chart now, and this award shows how much the organization thinks of him.
valid points....

Correction on Shoemaker
He started the year in AAA, got hit hard, then went down to AA for the rest of the season.
"That boy is our last hope" - Obi Wan Scioscia, as Francisco Rodriguez left for the Mets. "No, there is another" - Yoda Reagins.
I am confused
How does a guy who gets busted down to AA win pitcher of the year over someone who was called up to the bigs late in the season, like Richards? Also, unless he’s a late bloomer, what’s the point at this juncture?
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart - Always an Angel
21 IP in the PCL.
They basically jumped him from Rancho to Salt Lake, he played four games, then he played almost the full season in Arkansas.
Tyler Chatwood has played five games at Salt Lake as well, and has an ERA over 5 in those games. Ervin Santana had an ERA over 5 while playing five games in Salt Lake in 2007 at age 24 as well.
Salt Lake is an EXTREME run environment. Really doesn’t say a lot about a pitcher’s talent or how that pitcher will perform in Anaheim.
