Part of the job is signing autographs, maybe not at your own home, but still.

Don't be so quick to take Howie's side, yourself
I’ll say that it’s a non-story, as I really don’t care how an athlete behaves himself around his neighbors.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Is "believing this trashy website" without Howie's side
any different or silly than assuming all the athletes on your favorite team are good people?
I don’t think anyone is right or wrong in this situation. Both sides could have handled it much better but I think people assuming there’s no way in hell Howie would be a jerk outside of the stadium is also a little foolish and naive. Many athletes are.

One-sided story
Maybe the kid was a pain in the ass all summer. Who knows?
I’m not going to read much into this.
Yeah there's not really enough to go on
I could see how Howie would not like to get harassed at home, and if they were actually constantly berating him all year then yeah it makes sense. Or maybe their side is the complete 100% truth (99% chance it isn’t the whole story), and then Howie might be kind of a jerk. Truth is probably somewhere in the middle, as it always is.
Yeah, we're only hearing one side
Who knows what else could have been going on. Maybe these people had a dog that constantly barked and Howie finally called them on it, or something similar. Howie does not seem like the type to be a prick. If this was A-Rod or Barry Bonds, it would be a little more believable.
I would do the same thing as Howie if some prick kid came to my home bothering me.

Hey Dad, that's what Autograph Day at the the ball park and organized signing events are for.
What a player wants or does not want to do in his own free time is his or her own business. Privacy should be respected once you are rejected. Do you think dad and mom would be calling up Radar on Line if Howie had signed an autograph and posed for a picture saying what a great guy he was? I doubt it.
Chances are Howie had just found out that Jeff Mathis will be on the 2012 roster and was in a bad mood about it but knew he couldn’t say anything.
Napoli's 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th homers of the year (four more than Jeff Mathis' career total) rained down on Angel Stadium like knives from the ceiling.

Who the hell are the Anaheim Angels?
….I’d love to see Howie signed to a 4 or 5 year extension
Reminds me of a story from when I was a kid...
My dad got transferred to Boston for a year from 69-70, so we lived in transient housing. In our building, during the summer, there were a bunch of Red Sox players, and in the winter, Bruins.
Anyways, our apartement was directly below that of (the now late) Dick Williams, who was managing the Bosox at the time. My mom always wanted to ask him for tickets (all the adults in the building knew each other socially), but she could never get up the nerve…
Anyways… she FINALLY gets up the nerve, goes upstairs and asks him. He had just been fired as the Bosox manager.
Talk about lousy timing!!!

Nice story. How about this one?
I can still recall old Mister Barnslow getting out every morning and
nailing a fresh load of tadpoles to the old board of his. Then he’d
spin it round and round, like a wheel of fortune, and no matter where
it stopped he’d yell out, “Tadpoles! Tadpoles is a winner!” We all
thought he was crazy. But then we had some growing up to do.

It is possible that they were not very welcoming to him or his family
“We respected their privacy” can also mean “we ignored them completely”.
If the 8-year-old had made friends with Howie’s kids (I don’t know how old they are so it may be moot) the story might have been different, as in we’d never have heard of these people.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Never mind, Howie's child is only 3.
But it still sounds a lot like “we ignored them”.
We had an Angels player and his wife who lived in our apartment building in 1970 and I can’t for the life of me figure out who he was, but they were included in a couple of parties that everyone in the building went to. They didn’t seem special, just nice. I don’t remember anyone asking him for his autograph, but I also can’t imagine him refusing anyone in that particular group.

I sat next to Adam Sandler at an Angels game once
I obviously knew who he was, but I figured he didn’t want attention drawn to him so I didn’t ask him for an auto. Well eventually he got spotted and he started signing autos during inning breaks. He signed them for a long time too and he didn’t make any 8 year olds cry. After he got spotted I had him sign my ticket for my sister who wasn’t at the game who was a huge fan. That ticket is still one of my sister’s favorite things.

Take it for a grain of salt (which I actually do as well) but I was told a couple seasons back by a friend that interned with the team that Kendrick was far from a popular player in the clubhouse at the time. My point is that this does not change anything about how good of a player or Angel Howie is…just that people assuming all Angels are great guys and that there must be some missing element to this story (or that these people are more than just neighbors who’s EIGHT YEAR OLD son also bought into Howie’s cordial smile) can sometimes be wrong.

I've never heard of it
It sucks that this is the only thing passing for “news” about the Angels right now. Like Matt, I read everything I can about the Angels, and everything I have read has indicated that Howie is a good guy. For example, Howie and his wife organized the “Angels for Animals” event to benefit the OC Animal Care Center. As part of that event, Howie participated in signings where the proceeds benefited the Animal Care Center — not himself. Howie also was the Angels’ main representative at the Angels VIP Fan Experience. One of the posters here, raskul, attended that event, and this was his account of Howie:
Howie is a very, very nice man. He kept thanking the people for supporting his wife Jody’s fundraiser (she led the event which supports the OC shelter and several rescue and spay/neuter groups). He liked the fact that we have a rescue dog, and he noted the lens I was using is one of his favorites – he’s a Canon shooter too. He seemed to be enjoying himself; he was there first and stayed longer than all the others.
http://www.halosheaven.com/2011/9/8/2413172/angels-vip-experience
So before I am willing to throw Howie under the bus as “kind of a prick,” I am going to need a lot more than the word of an 8-year-old kid who showed up at Howie’s house demanding an autograph.
That is fair
And again, I’m going off something I was told 2 years ago by someone who was in a position with a little more insight than the average fan. It’s possible that was overblown, but I frankly didn’t see any reason to think someone would make stories up.
I guess I’m just wondering why it makes a difference. We root for a baseball team. Michael Jordan was a dick. Kobe Bryant IS a dick. A-Rod and Barry Bonds are people you would hate unless they were winning games for your team.
Were the athletes you went to high school with the most humble, self-aware, thoughtful people in school? Probably not. Some, absolutely, but not all. There requires a certain amount of ego and cockiness to dominate at a sport…we should be happy as fans to have productive players regardless of whether or not they can be rude.

I'm torn on this one
I don’t think that kid’s family should have made such a huge deal out of Howie not signing, but I really thinking Howie should have just signed the damn autograph for an 8 year old. If it was some 20 something or older then obviously telling him no isn’t going to represent poorly on the Angels or Howie because someone that old seeking autos isn’t going to get sympathy from the public. He also asked him during the offseason and IMO the thing that rubs me the wrong way about this, is that I’m sure Howie had no problem cashing the checks from Howard’s Electronics that have helped make him a bit more well known. If you want to make extra money doing endorsements Howie, and represent people, sign autos for 8 year olds………

In 2012, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Angel's First World Championship
Was GA hostile?

I was going to comment on how GA Howie is
But, I’m just too GA.

no, no, there is a longstanding joke about GA that even those who loved the guy like to use, you will see.

You know which former Angel was great for autographs?
Tim Salmon. Signed my ticket for my 11th birthday. Didn’t just say “Oh, sure, I’ll sign that!”, he actually took the time (albeit after the game) to sign the ticket, ask me how old I was turning, patted me on the back (in a non-creepy, non-Billy Mac sort of way) and wished me a happy birthday.
Don’t think I’ll ever forget that.

Rec'd for the Salmon story
Also rec’d for mentioning Billy Mac’s pedophilia during a sweet story.

This is some serious suburban dramaturgy
Apparently it’s only a crime to refuse a sense of entitlement if you live in a gated community. Assuming that this is even what happened, justifying your kid’s hurt feelings to the tabloid press is a really whacked-out form of soccer-mom justice. I’d sooner believe that this family was trying to run Howie off the block for not joining their homeowner’s association.

And concert halls…
And echo with the sounds of salesmen!
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
I still have unconditional love for Howie.
I don’t believe for a minute that he is a prick.
Trust the Deception
God damn this pisses me off.
Screw you, Howie.
I’m officially boycotting watching all Angels games until at least March of 2012.
I've got nothing.

I may boycot as well...
… but it will have nothing to do with this. It will depend on the catchers on our roster, and whether one of them has a last name that rhymes with “Nathis”.
Why did the parents of this kid
let him go to their door and ask for an autograph?
I think there is plenty of time to get autographs and not go to these players homes.
Now if you saw him walking around a mall or something like that it might be different.
apparently he was their neighbor
and the kid asked when they were moving out at the end of the season.

Sounds fishy...
Reading the story, it sounds like it was more than just the kid coming over. There had to be a lot of discussion beyond, “sorry, I don’t sign autographs at home” to become “isn’t going to happen” and her to retort with her whole spiel to him about being able to sign 20 of them in the time they apparently badgered him about saying no the first time.
Also, I’m guessing the kid was crying over the embarrassment of his folks losing their minds more than not getting an autograph. He’s probably still crying now that the kids in school are making fun of him for it as they read this article. LOL
For the record,
don’t come knocking on my door asking for my autograph either, bitches!
