Frank McCourt Almost Bought the Angels
A fantastic summary of the entire Dodgers McCourt escapade brings up the chilling, if already reported, fact: In 2003, Frank McCourt almost bought the Angels.
McCourt wanted to make a nothing-down offer for the Angels, eventually purchased by billboard magnate Arte Moreno for $180 million. McCourt didn’t have much more cash on his third try, bidding for a Dodgers team (then) considered more than twice as valuable as the Angels... (Fox) executives estimated he wouldn’t have the financial resources to wrest the Dodgers TV rights from Fox and start his own (network).
Find me a scarier proposition this Halloween than FrankenJamie owning the Angels...

I remember
this from when the team was for sale (and have mentioned it in various contexts since then). Disney wasn’t stupid. As between Arte’s cash and the McCourts’ IOU, the choice was pretty easy.
It's been easy for the last while
To feel smug as an Angels fan while the Dodgers go up in smoke.
It’s sobering to hear about this. Damn.
"I have something 95 percent of all those All-Stars only wish they had: a World Series ring. If I had to choose between that and being an All-Star, it would be no contest. I’d grab the gold ring and never look back." -Tim Salmon
I wonder who McCourts would have hired to be the GM after Stoneman

the Angels being contracted even though the LA Times said it was unlikely the day before

Times are so much better now than they were then
This is what could be said about the team then:
Anaheim officials said they have received no indication from Disney that they would consider dissolving a franchise with four decades of history and the still-fresh memories of former owner Gene Autry’s passion, a franchise that has illustrated, although not recently, it can draw close to three million fans with a winning team.
Today, the team has drawn at least 3 million fans in nine straight seasons, and it recorded the fifth highest attendance rate this year in MLB.
there wee rumors that the kings might move south
As of last year.

It was more than just rumors
It was all but a done deal (the team name Anaheim Royals had even been copyrighted) that fell through in the last hour.
I'll raise you one Rev...

Scarier proposition:
1) Omar Minaya hired as GM
2) No new TV deal
3) Mathis offered a contract with a raise
4) Trumbo, Bourjos and Aybar traded for David Wright
5) Reyes and K-Rod signed to multi-year deals.
Muahahahahahaha!!!

Few things have ever given me greater joy than the McCourts ownership of the Doyers

All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

Bloomberg has done a great job following this story
I subscribe to the magazine and they have had several articles on this. One came out around the time of Spring Training and spelled out just how bad of a decision it was let them buy a team, how deep in debt they are, and how FUBAR this whole situation is.
Absolutely
It was a horrible idea to let McCourt buy the team with IOUs, and everyone but Selig could see that. What annoys me about this whole thing is that so far Selig has so far escaped any blame for the near-destruction of a signature MLB franchise.
You boys stick around--there'll be turkey and ice cream later!
Yes.
I found this interesting little article from 2004: http://www.boston.com/business/globe/articles/2004/01/16/the_mccourt_appeal/
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
And TBH, Disney was probably smarter as an owner, too.
At least, post 1998.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
