Scioscia will get the last laugh
as Napoli air mails a throw to right center to allow the series winning run to score.
Did anyone not think Napoli would get the game winning hit?
It was especially cute to see La Russa pull off some moves that only Scioscia could appreciate while sniffing his greasy sausage fingers.
Somewhere, right now, Mickey Hatcher is ruining a swing.

I wish we could bring out the stocks
Put them right outside the hats in front of the stadium and place Scioscia, Reagins, and any other folks who had their hand in the Vernon trade, in them.
Re-up your season tickets and get a few shots in with some rotten, spoiled food from the Aramark concession stands.
How’s that for the 2012 Select-A-Seat promo?

I think Arte and Carpino are on that GM road trip just as much to avoid the press
and having to talk about Napoli as they are purely looking for a new general manager.
Napoli's 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th homers of the year (four more than Jeff Mathis' career total) rained down on Angel Stadium like knives from the ceiling.

Rumor Is...
The Rangers plan on honoring Scioscia for his decision to keep Mathis over Napoli with a pregame presentation when the Angels first visit Arlington next year.
Rumor is the Rangers will give Scioscia a WS ring for his decision to not sign Beltre and allow them to trade for Napoli.
Scioscia is the Rangers’ 2011 team MVP!

Time to stop our masochistic celebrating folks....
This whole thing has turned into the worst relationship nightmare…..and we are celebrating our own public humiliation by singing Napoli’s praises with multiple fanposts.
Your high school enemy steals your hot girlfriend makes out with her in public and the thought of him banging her every weekend only elicits your enthusiastic “I’m glad she’s happy now.”
This is what we’re doing here folks…. This is not something to celebrate. The Napoli for Wells trade and the subsequent 2011 season, and especially the 2011 World Series, may be the low point in Angels history…

1986 and 1995 surpass this dog’s breakfast by a very long shot
Well, come see a fat old man some time!
Well Moondoggy, it depends how you view 86'
I can see your point about 86.’ For me personally I found the 82’ playoff collapse just as if now more painful than 86.’ Primarily because I felt the 1982 team was a better team and that we were primed to win it all. I am not sure the 86’ team could have beaten the Mets, even if we had made it.
That being said, I still count the Henderson homerun as the single most excruciating baseball moment for me. Downing’s body language as that ball sailded over the fence perfectly embodied my internal feelings as a fan. If was more disbelief than anything else…
If you include the Donnie Moore tragedy in the 86’ scenario, then I think you are right. But to me that aftermath of the Henderson HR and the 86 ALCS was primarily a personal tragedy for the Moore family and the extended Angels family. I don’t think it is right to think about that in a sportsfan sense.
Anyway, point taken. I don’t agree on 95’ though. That team only missed out on the playoffs. It wouldn’t have been unchartered territory in the way that 86’ (World Series) would have been.
I agree with Moondoggy here
It is bad, but I don’t think it’s the low point in Angels history. I’m happy for Napoli because 1) he came up as an Angel, 2) he was a key member of some good Angels teams, 3) he didn’t leave the Angels by his own volition, and 4) his success vindicates what my eyes and my brain always told me: Napoli was a much better baseball player than Mathis.
It’s shitty that Napoli’s success has to come while helping a division rival, but I can’t find myself hating the guy. I don’t like the Rangers; however, I’m still happy for Napoli. It’s a complicated set of feelings.
Agree with Moondoggy on 86 and 95
But link, c’mon. I’m not going to keep celebrating Napoli. He’s just rubbing our noses in it now. Mike Napoli is dead to me.
I don't hate Napoli either....
I loved him when he was here…and my first thought when I heard about the trade was “What are you doing Angles?”. I thought it was incredibly stupid to get rid of our healthiest and best power source…….but now he’s a Ranger. At some point we have to let it go… How long should we keep cheering for him?
To me, if the Rangers win it all and Napoli is the main reason it just intensifies our pain. While I won’t exactly root for Naps to fail, I am not going to celebrate his triumph as if it were an Angels triumph.
We will cheer for him as long as Mathis is still on this team
conger > mathis
Mike is not rubbing Angels fans noses in it
he is rubbing Mike Scioscia’s nose in it. Mike was always good with the fans and the media. Mike is proving himself at the expense of the idiot who held him back.

This isn't some enemy stealing our hot chick
The enemy never even made a move. This one is totally on the Angels. You had the Brooklyn Decker of catchers. You treated her like crap. Talked her down to try and ruin her self esteem. Then one day you told her, hey! I need some more beer! Go to Canada and bring me back a case of Molson. She did. When she came back she found you in bed with Madeleine Albright. She left in tears.
Next spring you see her with a dude in a cowboy hat. Don’t blame him, blame yourself.

I totally agree with this, though I barely understand a word
I have zero problem rooting hard for Napoli this World Series. Like Eckstein or Erstad or Washburn or Vlad, I liked him as an Angel, and I keep liking him after he leaves. Besides, the Rangers are representing the AL West, and with every step closer to the MVP award, Napoli is making Andrew Friedman more likely than Omar Minaya. It’s kind of a win-win-win-win for me, not some self-punching exercise.

with you 100% Matt
I went to the deciding game in the NLCS between the Mets and the Cards intending to root for the Mets, but when Eck led off the first inning, I caved and rooted for them the whole way. Kinda sucks that Eck won and now likely Naps will win the WS MVP out of uniform.
Well, come see a fat old man some time!
Not as sick as

conger > mathis
Not Really
Toronto did not need a catcher.
Maybe the Jays could have gotten more for him, but they had Arencibia or whatever his name is.

As long as mathis is still on this team
I will continue to root for napoli. Sosh can come up with all the excuse he wants, but last time i check mathis didnt help this team get to teh world series let alone win the division. Unless somehow mathis and or vernon can lead this team to a division win over texas next year, sosh and mathis will always be dead to me.
conger > mathis
Me too.
I’ve been rooting for Napoli ever since the Angel season ended. I hope they win the world series, spend the winter celebrating, writing books, enjoying their new media attention. And come back next year a little too satisfied and out of shape, so the Angels can put things right in the world.

Mathis help the team get to a World Series or win a division title?
He can’t even help the team win a freakin regular season series against the Royals.
CONGER, CONGER, CONGER !!!
I wanted to write a fan post but I stopped myself. But I will say it here:
Once and for all, Mike Scioscia needs to say PUBLICLY that he totally underestimated/underappreciated Napoli’s talent and that he regrets allowing him to be traded. He also needs to say PUBLICLY that his decision to stick with Mathis was a mistake and that it cost the Angels first place in the division.

Scioscia Can't Say That
As much as we want Scioscia to eat crow publicly, he can’t. The PR part of his job is to show confidence in the players he’s got. He’s honest enough to admit when players aren’t playing “to potential” but to say that he regrets keeping them and not the guy that was traded would be unprofessional.
Privately, I’m sure Scioscia isn’t stupid. He’s watching what Napoli is doing too. When he’s asked about it, he’ll just say that he’s happy for Mike’s success.
Now what does Scioscia REALLY need to do? Support the selection of a GM with the smarts to know what trades are worthwhile, and then let them do their job.
The trades that are NOT worthwhile
would be anything that trades away Trumbo, Trout (absolutely),
or (arguably) Conger.
Along with Peter Borjous, we’ve got the core of a future winning squad.
just read that the rangers have not lost 2 in a row...
… in they’re last 48 games. The Rangers are gonna be world series champs and Mike Napoli will be WS MVP.
For those sick and tired of hearing about the whole wells/napoli/mathis/scioscia mess… get used to it. Its not going away, ever. The front office can do everything you could possibly ask for in hirings, firings, trades, etc… we could win the world series next year and of course that would ease the pain and make us forget for a period of time. But, the bottom line is nobody ever forgets fuck ups of this magnitude, ever. The Red Sox won 2 rings in recent years and we still hear about the ruth trade and bill buckner error.
People don’t just move on from one of the worst trades ever in baseball. The fact that Napoli is terrorizing for our division rival and about to be name series mvp just rubs salt in a fresh wound that will leave a scar to forever be remembered.

The words of David Murphy after last night's game:
“At this point, I’m not surprised by anything he does,” said David Murphy, who set up Napoli’s heroics with a single to load the bases. "He’s Superman right now. I knew we were getting a good player when we traded for him, but he has exceeded all expectations.
“We thought we were getting a light defensive catcher who could hit for power but he was going to strike out a lot and not hit for high average. He’s hit for high average, he sees a lot of pitches at the plate, he has great at-bats, he gets big hits, he throws guys out, he calls a great game. What else do you need?”

I do, and have already. It’s actually rather easy. We hear about Red Sox screw-ups of years past because they themselves created a myth of Perpetual Loser, and sat and stewed in their self-made loser juices for decades and decades. I feel sorry for any Angels fans that want to go that route.

Thats why i said "people" and not everybody. but hey i agree with you..
… I don’t think Angel fans will adopt that loser mentality though. All im saying is the topic will never go away. This isn’t some shea hillenbrand or justin speier failed experiment. This was a screw up of historic proportions. And that kind of shit isn’t lived down. So whether you’ve moved on or not, you’ll always be reminded of it. Especially if you’re involved in fan sites like ours.

I can dig that.
I spent the year being pissed off about it. “Getting over it” didn’t come naturally, as I have to actively push that trade to the back of my brain. One way to do that is to not continue to suck his dick while he plays for a division rival. I liked Mike Napoli, but I like the Angels more. So i’ll root for them, and not him.

Angels 2011 W-L record with the alternate red jersey: 17-12
I still haven't gotten over the Brian Harper, Dickie Thon, Carney Lansford, and Tom Brunansky trades
Even though I greatly enjoyed our ‘82-86 run, and appreciated the (few) contributing players we got in return for those guys. Doesn’t mean I’m stewing in loser juice, just means I’m a warts-and-all fan who hopes we stop making avoidable mistakes.
The OP said that even if the Angels do everything right from here on out, including winning a World Series, that we'd all still be crying about Mike Napoli leaving. I don't believe that.
After Game 7 of the 2002 WS, did you make a post that said “Winning the championship was great and all, but fuck this team for trading Tom Brunansky!!”?

I agree about the getting over point you both make.
But Matt’s version is more of a “Remember that trade? Yeah, that was horrendous. I can’t believe they did that”. Which I can totally see, because I’m sure if you asked me about it 10 years from now, that’s probably the exact way I’ll recall it. Maybe I’ll be wrong, and only time will tell, but right now I dont think 10 years from now the Napoli trade will be on the same level of the Red Sox trading Babe Ruth away or Bill Buckner single-handedly destroying his team’s World Series run.

it will be on the same level for me
Donnie Moore
1995 (aka Mark Langston is a pussy)
Napoli
Carney Lansford
Every time I saw Lansford in a game against the A’s 1987-92 mini dynasty I got aggravated about us trading him more than half a decade prior. With that foul trade as a benchmark, I can say with great confidence that I will never outgrow the misery of the Napoli trade.
