Trumbo Played on Broken Foot for Weeks
According to Joe McDonnell, Trumbo says his foot was broken long before he went on the DL. Shades of Erstad!

Shades of stupidity
Trumbo was horrid during the last few weeks of the season. He should be scolded instead of lauded for playing hurt and hurting his clubs chances of making it to the postseason.

Sure
That’s why I said shades of Erstad, because when Ersty played with a broken hand he still played pretty much up to snuff.
Rookie judgment, to be sure. Nevertheless, I admire the determination.
You boys stick around--there'll be turkey and ice cream later!
because they had someone on the bench who was ready to step up not be horrid
???

my names russell. you might remember me from being under utilized on an angels team that could have used a left handed power bat.

Who needs Russell Branyan when you've got Jeff "Mr. October" Mathis?

Totally...
If Sosh employed Branyan’s .197/.295/.370 bat more regularly we’d be playing in St. Louis tomorrow night.

Boy, I sit corrected
to think that this discarded DFA’d piece of offal was available and not used because Trumbo didn’t wuss out? Holy 1995, Batman! What an historic screw up!

I'm sorry
It’s hard to pick up on sarcasm over all these muscles and home runs.

Really?
It’s the manager’s job to put the best players on the field. A true pro is willing to take the field and play through an injury when his club needs him. If Effren Navaro would have been a better option down the stretch then point the finger at Sosh, not the dude that went out and played through a broken foot.
You’re a jack off.
He played on that foot because he knew there wasnt a better replacement than his injured self. He’s selfless

Scioscia had nice things to say about Trumbo in that article.
I guess durability of a player is not so much an issue with Scioscia when the depth at 1B was so shallow all season and offense was traded away absent except for Trumbo’s bat.
Napoli's 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th homers of the year (four more than Jeff Mathis' career total) rained down on Angel Stadium like knives from the ceiling.
are you trying to say that Juan Rivera woulda been a better replacement?

Duh! Juancho's a replacement 2B, not a 1B!!!
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?

Reported During the Season
Trumbo, who has played for about a month and a half with the injury, will not need surgery, but he will probably be placed in a walking boot and will be unable to do any rigorous activity for six weeks. He has already scrapped his plans to play winter ball in Venezuela.
Trumbo no hurt foot
Trumbo no feel pain!

What a stud.
Stupid as hell but damn, the man must have to custom order his cups for his enormous balls.

Damn.
And people think baseball players are pansies. If I have a blister on my foot I ain’t doing a damn thing! With a broken foot i’d be worthless.

Let's see....
He must not have told the team doc that it hurt, or the doc would have ordered xrays or an MRI.
I applaud the guy’s heart, but really question his brain. We’d all think he was a real “tough guy” if not disclosing the injury to medical personnel resulted in a long-term issue with his foot…right?
From Jeff Mathis' TOPPS card: "Jeff is a defensive catcher, but he can rake it when it counts." Jeff has a lifetime .199 MLB batting average
Shades of TORII, if you ask me
Torii Hunter has played both really well and really poorly the last two seasons. And then he reveals that he played poorly while dealing with more than the usual litany of ahces and pains that comes from being a late-30’s ballplayer.

This is both encouraging and disturbing
Encouraging in the sense that maybe this explains Trumbo’s nosedive in September (.233/.250/.453), rather than the generally prevailing theory that the league “figured him out.” This gives me some hope about his future performance and trade value.
Disturbing in the sense that the team either did not know, or did not care, that Trumbo was playing with a broken foot during the pennant chase. This raises more fundamental concerns about the team’s operations.
That's not a good thing
How could a team not know that he was playing on a broken foot?
I wouldn't let on unless the foot was absolutely killing me.
No way am I going to let the one shot I’ve ever gotten to live my dream go down the drain because of some pain; unless I knew without a doubt I was hurting the team and would come off as selfish.
I have no problem with this
A) He was a rookie who was given a golden opportunity to establish himself as a major league regular. If he sits, and Branyan takes off (or Navarro, or whomever) he might see less playing time when/if he gets healthy. Remember, Trumbo only got his job because the guy in front of him was injured. And, being a rookie, may not have wanted to come across as a whiner. Rookies that speak too much get the Jered Weaver cell phone treatment, or something similar.
B) The foot probably hurt like hell, but that’s what “pain” is. Most athletes try to play through pain at some point or another. All of them. Except Mike Marshall, aka General Soreness. Trumbo most likely genuinely thought the pain would go away in a few days. And although Trumbo’s numbers decreased in September, it wasn’t like they fell off the cliff to Mathisian levels.
C) The team was in a pennant race. All hands on deck. Just ask Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury, circa 2010.
In the end, this is just one of those things. Yeah, it would have been helpful if Trumbo had been more forthright regarding his health. But I don’t blame him for trying to play through it.

Once again we are on the same page
Trumbo had a hurt foot, not a hand or wrist injury that would totally kill his swing. I respect the hell out of the guy for manning up and playing through the pain. I can only imagine how a foul ball off that foot must have felt.
Branyan has been passed around the league because he is not that great of a player. A hurt Trumbo is probably still better than a rusty, aging Branyan.
The kid did everything he could to help his team win and probably earned a lot of respect in the locker room.
I one worked a whole week at the office with a broken heart.

Trumbo is John Wayne
Trumbo is so tough, he’ll eat the boogers out of a dead man’s nose and then ask for seconds.

All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.
