Lyle Spencer supports non-tendering of Mathis!
Got involved in a prolonged Twitter skirmish with Lyle Spencer the other day, covering such matters as why he sucks up to ballplayers and managers. It ended with Lyle casting his support behind the non-tendering of Jeff Mathis. Hurrah! !
davidbrad65 @ @LyleMSpencer So you will join me in proclaiming that Jeff Mathis must be DFA'd (sic)? LyleMSpencer Lyle Spencer @ @davidbrad65 Sure. Whatever makes you happy.

Either that or he just wanted to close a bad conversation
One that included references to him hitting a crack pipe with Darryl Strawberry.

I'm sure he just wants Jeffy to enjoy new, stress-free surroundings
In Texas, with best buddy (and rubber man) Mike Napoli.

Spenser comes off pretty okay in this I think
He still doesn’t get it, but neither does my grandpa.
Unlike this cat, my love for the LAA will never die.
I still think it's funnier than hell
Batshit crazy for sure!

I think it's illustrative that he admired Strawberry
The man — who I used to work with, years ago — never met anyone whom he could not drown in praise. There’s a straight line you can draw from his admiration of Strawberry — a drug-addicted train wreck of a human being — to his slobbering over Mathis, Wells, et. al. today. He practices journalism as sycophancy, i.e. a suck up. It’s high time it stops.
He thinks he's a serious journalist who never pulls a punch
@Amen367 I’ve asked tough questions for 40 years. I can’t manipulate answers to suit disgruntled fans. Sorry for that.
Just to be fair to the guy, it probably is pretty tough asking Mike Scioscia about what he had for lunch.
The sad part is...
He has a cartoonish view of fans — we are disgruntled, unreasonable, uninformed — but I know his act really well. He’s not capable of getting outside his own skin and learning anything new. And like Rev says, it comes off as condescension. He’s a dinosaur and he has no idea that both of his feet are stuck in the tar pits.

Don't forget the most important question
“Which one of Mathis’s perfect qualities is your favorite?”
My guess: "The Intangible one."

The issue with Spencer is his intransigence
He digs in his heels with his opinion and instead of considering the arguments presented against his stances, he asserts his authority as a baseball expert while demonstrating no grasp of any knowledge or comprehension out of the ordinary.
Stubborness combined with vanilla-ness combines with elitism. Adds up to a shit sandwich…

We talking about Spencer or Scioscia Rev?

Spencer
If Sciosica calls a canolini a rigatoni he will retract his assertion before the second plate.
Mmmmmmm.....
canolini

I think he just wanted to shut you up.
Kinda like what I do to my kids when they are annoying me

Yeah, and I don't blame him
Lyle may be an idiot, and he definitely writes many terrible articles, but that does not mean he is going to engage someone who is acting like a child on a public forum, as davidbrad65 was.
Sometimes guerrilla tactics are justified
Everyone seems to want Lyle to STFU and cry uncle. Well, my antics accomplished that. And frankly, IDGAS what the “tsk-tskers” think. I have Lyle Spencer, in writing, supporting the release of Jeff Mathis. And yes, I know, there’s considerable evidence that his support was given under extreme duress. But this is the Angels, the most childish indulgence of my life. So lighten up there.
you don't have him in writing supporting you. You have him in writing telling you 'whatever dude'
I'm an Angels fan
And my response acknowledges that
In the next sentence. And the last sentence says “lighten up” — which I might add, is directed at you.
Sure. Whatever makes you happy.

A pip?

You should be thanking Lyle Spencer
He gave you attention for a prolonged Twitter Battle. This coming from a guy that made an account specifically to battle Lyle Spencer. Why he would engage a guy with no avatar photo is beyond me, but you are very lucky. No wonder he feels fans are unreasonable and uninformed.
This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.

I used to work with Lyle Spencer
For several years. He knows me. I know him. Sorry I didn’t make this totally clear. So there was nothing anonymous about it. That’s why he engaged.
"Everyone"? No.
I might care about this if I read Spencer in the first place. The remarkable transference of aggression towards Spencer seems to parallel the whining about ESPN’s coverage of West Coast baseball. I don’t watch ESPN and I don’t read Lyle Spencer. Problem solved.
Instead of getting involved anonymously in electronic slapfights with strangers, maybe you might want to spend a moment and look at exactly how ridiculous you made yourself appear in the above. Calling someone you don’t know a crackhead in hopes of getting him to play on the swings with you isn’t your finest hour.

Totally agree GK.
I never read Lyle’s blog, unless it’s linked here, haven’t watched ESPN for about 2 years running now, except on the rare occasions they’re televising Halo games. Problem solved.

Which variety of "Special" do you mean?
A) “Special” so awesome it is the best in baseball history, or B) “Special” as in he takes the short bus to the stadium and back home at the end of the game?

Of course he does.
And when it happens he will claim that is was his idea all along. And that it is the best thing to ever happen to Jeffey. Then he will start to think about it for more than 10 seconds and will start to promote the idea that playing NINE players with an offense is going to be a better approach than these recent years when we only played EIGHT, especially in the AL where all the other teams have already committed to NINE.
