Nice. I'm liking this hire more and more.
He’s also a fan of the Japanese league, it seems. There could be some Iwakuma or Darvish in our future.

I too liked what I heard him say yesterday...
I just hope it wasn’t just talk. I know we don’t have a lot of money to work with but I’m sure there are things that can be done.
I wanna go a WS game. In 2002 I didn’t have a job that allowed me to afford WS tickets.
Me too
I was in college in 2002 and could not afford any sort of playoff tickets. Now that I have a job I can finally afford tickets (at least one game) but alas no world series appearance.
Going to a world series game at Angels stadium is one of the things that I would like to accomplish in my lifetime. Hopefully sooner than later
You guys are friggin' pathetic!
Oh, woe is me, no world series appearances in the last 9 years. The horror. THE FUCKING HORROR!!!!
Jesus – entitled much?

And we've had that.
October baseball does not equal a World Series in Anaheim. Right? It is a crapshoot once the playoffs start.

I will never be convinced of that.
I will always be convinced that great players find ways to win, while those players who are merely good will find ways to lose.
"I am become Death, Destroyer of cERA" - Oppenheimer FTW!
Crapshoot is a loaded term...
But don’t you agree that there is more variance in a 5 or 7 game series than we’d see over a season? One bad inning and the series could be lost. The whole “it evens out over the season” thing is null and void in the playoffs – not enough sample to get even when a bad day happens.
All that to say, it is more likely for an 86 win team to beat a 102 win team when they only have to win 3 out of 5. That 102 win team is better, no doubt, but there is no guarantee that they win the series. That doesn’t make them a less good team in the regular season – but it does make them less good in the short series. (Or just less lucky?)…
I think it’s more complicated than the great players know how to “win” while the good players find ways to “lose”. Why didn’t the merely good players find ways to lose more during the regular season – thus never giving themselves the opportunity in the playoffs?

Right...
playoffs in 2002 (WS win), 2004, 2005 (ALCS loss), 2007, 2008 and 2009 (ALCS loss). We have raised the bar, and met the expectation. I just think it’s a little whiny to be lamenting that there have been no WS games in 9 years after the previous 41 didn’t go so well…

Food for thought:
New GM Dipoto believes Angels can contend now
Jerry Dipoto believes the relationship between pitchers and catchers comprises 90 percent of baseball. Perhaps that’s why the former major league pitcher believes he’ll get along quite well with old catcher Mike Scioscia in their new partnership with the Los Angeles Angels.
………………..
"I’m a fairly energetic person, and I expect that from the people around me," Dipoto said. "I can’t wait for the opportunity to learn everything I can from Mike to get us back right where we should be."
Now, just to let you know, I’ve accepted, and therefore believe, the pitcher/catcher shtuff. However, I know how the thought of such things shoves a stick up the ass of many of you.
I agree.
I don’t think any logical baseball fan can deny the importance of a pitcher/catcher relationship. I agree with Scioscia to a point, but when you make it the most important thing, bad things happen.

Jeff Mathis says "whew...I thought the new GM would not offer me a contract"
“Wearing that funny hat made the guys laugh and sealed the deal with them liking me”

From Jeff Mathis' TOPPS card: "Jeff is a defensive catcher, but he can rake it when it counts." Jeff has a lifetime .199 MLB batting average
With that being said, Dipoto has a tough task in front of him...
He values the pitcher/catcher relationship, but he believes in players getting on base…so what will he do with Mathis?
If I was Dipoto, I’d offer Mathis a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. If he can win a spot from there, then we can move to step 2…but what do I know

No, No, a thousand times noooooooooooooo
Sosh has no willpower, you can’t dangle Mathis as an option.
CONGER, CONGER, CONGER !!!
I agree
Offering a spring training invitation will only result in Mathis making the team, resulting in more of the same. Jeff needs to go somewhere like Cincinnati, where Dusty Baker will over-use him much like Mike did.

Haren Deal.....
….I’m still a little mystified by those who think that Reagins got the better of the deal (for once) from DiPoto…..the aim of this deal for the Angels was to make the playoffs and have a solid starter available for the playoff rotation; and, while Haren pitched well, the team finished 10 games back the past two years. So, while the idea was sound, the deal ultimately was a gamble that failed….unless Haren defies nature and continues to pitch at a high level for several more years despite his continual decline in velocity…..
…as for the D-Backs, they a) dumped a big contract; b) got a solid 4-5 rotation starter who helped them win the division, and should continue to contribute in that role; and c) got 2 good lefthanded pitching prospects, one of whom (Tyler Skaggs) was named the top prospect in the Cal League by Baseball America, and the other (Pat Corbin) also has done well……even if these pitchers flame out (as young pitchers often do), in any event the deal looks pretty good from an Arizona standpoint……
Really? Your going to complain about Dan Haren?
Our starting rotation was the reason this team was able to win 86 games. Theres plenty of reasons why this team didn’t the playoffs, but Dan Haren was not one of them. The D-Backs acquired some good young prospects from us, what do you expect when trading for an ace pitcher? Oh and I love Joe, but I wouldn’t exactly describe him as “solid”.

Hmmm.
You might be missing the point.
There were plenty on here suggesting Dipoto got hosed on the Haren deal… while in reality, he dumped a contract, acquired a serviceable SP, and two fantastic prospects. The D-backs found themselves in the post-season as well.
This trade was hardly Rivera/Napoli for Wells.

Fail!
They got some great talent in return. But what got my blood flowin’, was the " the deal ultimately was a gamble that failed" statement. Both teams received what they were hoping for.

The Haren Trade was one of the rare ones that are balanced on each end. There isnt a team that got the better end.

What's up with Lone Star Ball's obsession with us?
World Series just ended and they have nothing else to do but to talk about us. I got banned after 3 posts. GG.
They are bitter.
They know that after what happened in Game Six, this Rangers team will never make the World Series again.

Kinda OT, but still pertaining to Nolan...
I still feel, deeply inside, that Nolan Ryan did not want to be commemorated in this years 50th anniversary on purpose. I’m not saying he faked going to the hospital or whatever, but it seems too sketchy. IMO

I know that it is a weak and evil way of thinking, but I agree with your sentiment.
There is a lot of bitterness in that face. A lot of anger, hate and resentment. And we have seen a bucketload of those shots over the past couple of seasons. The man knows how reach his dark side.
It is not beyond the pale to think that he still holds some serious grudge against the Angels organization, which has been fed in no small part by the same envy that fuels Rangers fan resentment towards our franchise every single day.
I am a lesser person for feeling this way, but that is just the way it’s gonna be.
"I am become Death, Destroyer of cERA" - Oppenheimer FTW!
Not weak at all.
I think it’s pretty apparent that Nolan Ryan is bitter towards the Angels. He never wanted to leave Anaheim. I think he still cares about the fans out here, but the organization can kiss his ass. He scoops up our former players like candy and his team makes a point to wear their red and play all of our former players when they face the Angels. He might just be trying to create a rivalry that tends to be good for both teams’ business, but I think it’s more than that.
