Fun HaloLinks Today
Reminds me that the offseason is its own brand of fun, especially when the World Series champs aren’t the Rangers.
I only see the Angels pop up once or twice in the FA pool, and I am happy to see this. After they were going to get an ace bullpen arm, a third baseman, and a left fielder last year, they took the big splash and were the laughingstock of baseball.
That DiPoto passed on the Orioles but did go witht he Angels is heartening. The Angels are in better shape overall, sure, but when we know that Angelos scares people away, the perception here is that DiPoto has been given the power he would not have in Baltimore.
I like Bobby Abreu, but I would be down with the Angels finding a taker, like Kansas City or something, and splitting the salary cost. Abreu had a big impact on the Angels in 2009, and I imagine his approach could pay dividends elsewhere, too. Even another $5 million might get the Angels in on the kind of presence that would solidify the rotation and/or lineup.
Also, if you get, say, Prince Fielder, I think you get more revenue just from having that bat in your lineup. It’s one thing to say, “Our budget shouldn’t exceed $140 million”, but if you look at what determines payroll, attendance and playoff presence are big factors. You get a superstar in that lineup, maybe more people show up, maybe you make it to October baseball.
I like Trumbo lots, but I think he may be more valuable as a trade chip for a decent starter, say a serviceable #4 while the young Angels pitchers mature some more.

I thought for a second we were gonna lose Vernon/thebigtizzle.

He wanted to be there for the team.
While also financially crippling them.

okay i cant (or dont know how if possible) to link from my phone...
… but Wells posted a tweet about 8 hrs ago ~ “goodnight all, been a busy couple of days but excited to start hitting tomorrow!! Show my new team what I am real”. ??? Anyone know who he’s referring to when he says “new team” ?

Thinking the same thing. New Team??? Been traded??? OH YEAH??!!??
Here it is …

Then he twitted this …

Oh… Now I get, it. He really didn’t show up last season since he had the choice of opting out of his contract if he wanted to sign a better, more lucrative, one with maybe the Skanks, or stRangers, to name a few of the other teams bidding for his services.
Vernon I think we all agree.
Nobody wants to see anything close to the sackless performance you put up last year.

TR single handedly made an entire fanbase hate VW’s guts and he really had nothing to do with it….it’s not like he said “toronto, pay me the worst contract ever, i want to cripple you financially…then trade me to the Angels for naps.”
i’d be thrilled if VW just got to his pre-2011 career #’s.

Folks may start asking whether Trout was the biggest collateral damage suffered by last offseason’s hijinx.
by Turks Teeth on Nov 3, 2011 9:51 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Per Lyle Spencer on Mike Trout:
When he found he was struggling with pitches in the lower reaches of the strike zone during his first visit to the big time, Trout adapted. He lowered his stance and began to feel more comfortable taking his hacks at sinkers down in the zone.
"He’s been really impressive," Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos said. "He and Mickey [Hatcher, hitting coach] worked on his stance, and it’s paid off. He went down and hit a couple of balls that weren’t even strikes."
That article is dated 8/31/11. Mike Trout went on to hit .182/.250/.236 in September and October.
Vernon Wells 2011 Stats (.218/.248/.412) and 2010 road stats (.224/.299/.400). The front office shouldn't have been surprised.
This makes me sad.
"I have something 95 percent of all those All-Stars only wish they had: a World Series ring. If I had to choose between that and being an All-Star, it would be no contest. I’d grab the gold ring and never look back." -Tim Salmon
Why do we let Hatcher work with anyone?
Has he ever made anyone better? We haven’t developed a star hitter since Troy Glaus. Our next closest were Napoli (who we traded for garbage) and Kendrick (who has been great at times and mediocre at other times).
We’ve had 12 years of Hatcher. Are the Angels absolutely sure they can’t possible do better?
That's scary
When he first came up, I remember Trout looking like he had better plate discipline than most of the guys on the team.
"He went down and hit a couple of balls that weren't even strikes"
. . .that’s why you take them and get some walks. What the hell, Hatcher?

Its almost laughable

by Quad Fin Rider on Nov 3, 2011 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions
Yup it must be Hatchers fault.
It probably has nothing to do with Trout playing the longest season of his life and being tired.
According to Keith Law Trout looks tired.
If he was tired in September and October, why is he still playing?
Vernon Wells 2011 Stats (.218/.248/.412) and 2010 road stats (.224/.299/.400). The front office shouldn't have been surprised.
he's a what 20-21 year old stud that is out of condition?
if he is tired now from playing extra games. Wouldn’t the scouts have seen that when he was still in high school? I’m sure he was in all types of leagues, or other sports, playing all the time for the past five to ten years in Joisey.
It's a lot different quality of play
With a lot more travel, more responsibilities, especially off the field. It’s a completely different ballgame, pun intended.
It’s really not uncommon at all for young guys to get worn out at the end of a long professional season.
The decision to send him to Arizona anyway is a rather striking one, however.

What if DiPoto makes a move for Votto using Trumbo as one of the main pieces (after he wins the RotY). I would think Trout would be brought up but is obviously untouchable. not trumbo
even though he could be traded for something decent out there, it would never include getting pujols or fielder. i think they should shop abreu, hunter, mathis, and fuentes/rodney. maybe the change of scenery will improve their pitching, but if we can unload all that money, we could make a serious run at albert or prince. and they’re the only real players out there to go after.

And the great thing is that we don't have to trade Mathis.
We can just dump him by not tendering him a contract. We have no financial obligation to him if we do so. That’s $1.7m off the books right away.

Every now and then it’s good to remember that there was a point in time where Joe Mauer was the no.1 catching prospect in baseball and Jeff Mathis was no.2 and “not that far behind” per some scouts.
I don’t think he was destined to be this bad. He could have been decent at the very least.

I’m convinced that Mathis and Wood should have never placed as premiere prospects. I’m also convinced that their offensive flaws were enhanced by a man with a poor understanding of how to score runs in baseball.

My gut feeling for the offseason
Stay low key, pick up some pitching depth, perhaps a non-“big splash” trade for a little offensive help and/or roster space/salary relief. DFA Mathsi. Walk into 2012 marginally improved.
2012 will be a big season for DiPoto. Lots of veteran pieces walk years and tons of money coming off the books. He could swing major trades to either make a run or re-stock the farm depending on the standings around the break.
i like how they play up the team player role
wells knows that no-one would give him a tryout much less a contract. he is gonna live up to his contract no matter what. cause it will never happen again, there are no stupid gm’s out there

The sad thing is that Tony would 100% agree with the quote while not understanding it at all.

A team might be moving a contract (JUAN RIVERA), they might be moving a player who’s bearing down on free agency or getting up there in arbitration (MIKE NAPOLI). I've heard a couple people who have seen Trout play in the AFL say that he looks tired out there.
In fact, from Keith Law’s chat today:
Greg (LA)
I know that we discount hitting in Arizona, but what about lack of hitting? Trout’s been average at best.
Klaw (2:01 PM)
He’s visibly tired – 20 years old, been playing almost nonstop since early March.
I’m really not concerned about his AFL numbers. I’ll start freaking out of they carry over to next year.
That last line was my comment, not Law's
I realized after posting that I didn’t make that clear.
I'm not freaking out over Trout's lack of success in the AFL
But IMHO no one on this team is “untouchable”. If Trout + Santana could get us a proven, young All-Star like Evan Longoria – I’m pulling the trigger on the deal.
From Jeff Mathis' TOPPS card: "Jeff is a defensive catcher, but he can rake it when it counts." Jeff has a lifetime .199 MLB batting average
Being "tired" might explain a lack of BABIP, power, stolen bases, loss of range
but not being able to lay off pitches out of the strike zone. In fact it takes less energy to not swing.
Hatcher and Sosh’s mentality continues to absolutely ruin our young hitters and franchise value.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
Being tired would effect every part of your game
Mentally, physically…
It certainly doesn’t make me happy that he struggled in the AFL, but I don’t think that means he’s been ruined.

It's okay, last offseason Arte spent all his money on a statue of a leftfielder so there would be no expectation nor disappointment in Pujols by us.
Vernon Wells 2011 Stats (.218/.248/.412) and 2010 road stats (.224/.299/.400). The front office shouldn't have been surprised.
I don't think that's fair
If you put some wheels under a statue, it would probably have more range.
Meh, the statue's advantage in range is offset by VW's advantage in blessed to stressed ratio making it a wash.
Vernon Wells 2011 Stats (.218/.248/.412) and 2010 road stats (.224/.299/.400). The front office shouldn't have been surprised.
What, precisely, is VW's B/S number, as opposed to ... oh, say Pujols?
B/S = Blessed/Stressed
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
I'd venture a guess that Pujols' ability and desire to produce pushes up his stress level.
VW = Blessed/Stressed > 1.0
AP = Blessed/Stressed < 1.0
Vernon Wells 2011 Stats (.218/.248/.412) and 2010 road stats (.224/.299/.400). The front office shouldn't have been surprised.
Angel imagineers are still working out the components of Vernon's stress-bless tensor
![]()
The prevailing theory is that last year, Wells was so blessed by a $23 million salary that the corresponding decrease in normal stress led to an asymmetric loading of shear forces, causing him to try and pull every baseball he saw and thus creating an irrotational vortex in the heart of the Angel lineup.
by Suboptimal on Nov 3, 2011 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions 3 recs
Speaking of statues. Juan Rivera just got 4.5 million from the Dodgers, which seems high.
But it’s still 1/6th of Vernon Wells’s 2012 salary after he had a better(or less terrible, really) season than Too Blessed.
I hate that contract so much.
It's like the Dodgers want to mock our overpaid left-fielder with their own overpaid left-fielder
It’s Ned Colletti’s way of saying, “you thought this guy was worthless, but we gave him $4.5 million!” When Arte tries to come back with “but you paid him at least twice what he’s worth,” Ned will be ready with, “yes, but how many times more are you paying your left-fielder than what he’s worth?”
One final jab to be exchanged at a Christmas party, before Ned inevitably loses his job and goes to work writing lousy columns for ESPN. That’s got to worth at least $4.5 million for a guy who doesn’t have to pay it anyways.
We gave Jeter a painting
From Jeff Mathis' TOPPS card: "Jeff is a defensive catcher, but he can rake it when it counts." Jeff has a lifetime .199 MLB batting average
The statue wasn't erected by the Cardinals
It was in front of a resturant in a St. Louis suburb that Pujols owns himself!
Texas is "an early favorite" to sign Prince Fielder- Peter Gammons
If this was the case, would the Angels go “all out” to get Prince, just for the sake of keeping his bat out of a very potent Texas lineup?
