What would it take for us to land Martin Prado?
One last move this off-season to bolster our bench and provide a little pop. What would it take to get Prado from the Braves? They need a veteran SS for this year. Izzy fits that bill and he's pretty much excess for us w/ our youth coming up. It's said that the Braves GM wants a LF w/ some thump in his bat... How about Vernon Wells, and we'd eat $11M per year? Plus we could get a mid level prospect in return.

Dealing Wells allows us to bring Torii back on a 2yr deal to finish his career. If he just loses it this year, go after Ethier or hell maybe even Ichiro next off-season. I think the Braves may take Wells knowing they're only paying $10M per year for the next three years.

I am trying to wrap my head around this and then came upon the
“or even go after Ichiro next off season” and the head shaking started. It would be nice to move Wells but we don’t ever need to go after ichiro next off season. This is the new Angels, not the old Angels that signed marquee players that should have retired 3 yrs before we get them.
CONGER, CONGER, CONGER !!!
prado trade?
I don’t think Prado would give us anything that Trout couldn’t give us for less (especially if we have to eat VW’s contract) In fact I think Trout is probably a much better defensive player. Sure Prado might be reasonable for what he makes now, but if we eat Vernon’s contract you’re essentially paying 13million per year for a .260 15HR guy. Trout can do that for much less $$

Age is not a factor given that both of them will be 33 for the 2012 season. Wells was born in December 1978 while Willingham was born in February 1979.
As per the stats above, any team that wants a LF with a decent bat should just sign free agent Josh Willingham. Wells’ performance has been so poor in two of the last three years I doubt any team wants him. The Angels would have to take on an absurd portion of his contract in order to trade him.

Willingham really impressed last year playing in Oakland.
just about 30/100 for a dismall offensive team.

We need starting pitching....
…Behind the Big 4, there’s a huge cliff/drop off throughout the entire organization in starting pitching.
I hope we can sign a cheap 5th Starter(i.e. Jeff Francis), let Reckling & Richards develop more. Use Williams as our swing man. Better off making even minor league trades to aquire the pitching. God help us if any of our SP go on the DL.
But keeping everyone we have on the roster right now will give us that 2009 offensive depth that dropped off considerably in 2010 & 2011.
Francis is awful
Win-loss record be damned, he’s still very overrated. We’d probably get someone better out of an Abreu trade.
I'd say relief pitching
And maybe a #5 starter
Is more important at this point.
We’re good at 3B with Callaspo.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Wow they really want Izturis...
maybe we could get a guy like Randall Delgado for him
Also saw this comment
I say Jurrjens to the Halos for Erick Aybar!
I can’t decide if Aybar’s value is really that high or if the guy is an idiot but I would take that trade any day and take my chances with one or more of Izturis/Amarista/Segura at SS.

Jair Jurrjens?
Jurrjens hasn’t pitched more than 160 innings since 2009 and with the rotation we already have, I would think Aybar’s speed and defense would be more valueable in a playoff series. I don’t think we would go with a 5 man rotation in the playoffs anyway.
Plus as a lead-off hitter, Aybar’s career line is .284/.331/.400
as opposed to Peter Bourjos .254/.276/.467 …so it would be good to keep him around until Bourjos gets up to par in the leadoff spot.
We’re better off signing a 5th starter for a 1 yr 1 mill deal.
Or trade Abreu for Guthrie.
It's academic at this point
The most recent stories indicate the Braves have some concern about Tommy Hunter’s shoulder and may table the idea of trading Jurrjens, since he wouldn’t be “surplus” if Hunter lands on the DL.
That aside, it makes little sense to trade for Jurrjens to be the 5th starter. I think David Stern would void that deal, too, just on general principle.

Yes
Always get those two confused. I think it is damn inconsiderate of them to have their names so similar. Commissioner David Stern should step in and void one of their names.

I disagree
we have Santana and Haren entering FAgency after this season and Jurjens is signed through 2014. We have little to no pitching depth in the minors so this is a very favorable deal for the Angels.

NTC
Wells has a full no-trade clause in his contract. He waived it for the purposes of the trade to the Angels, but that doesn’t mean the clause is nullified in perpetuity.
In short, there is nothing for him to gain in being traded to Atlanta. The only conceivable advantage is that he would play closer to his home in Texas, and that essentially caps the list of “pros”. To make the move wouldn’t get him to a contending team from one doomed to fail, it wouldn’t provide him a better playing environment or better fans.
He will start in Anaheim unless he hits with Mathis-esque bewilderment, and his salary is the same in Anaheim or ATL. There is no reason for him to endorse a trade to the Braves.

We have a Martin Prado. His name is Alberto Callaspo.
Prado is nothing special.

Bingo, Callaspo did great last year
he improved considerably over the previous year and I would expect him to match last season at the very least, I don’t see a drop off from his OBP. This coming from someone who called him Collapso in 2010.
