Spring training suggestions and info?
I am looking for suggestions regarding spring training.
I have never been to spring training before, and recently was discussing the possibility of coordinating a trip with my brother (he is in Anaheim, I am in DC) for a long weekend in late February or early to mid-March. I know that I have read comments on this site before referring to spring training excursions. To those who have made the trip before, did you enjoy the experience? What specifically would you recommend in terms of places to stay, places to eat, things to do, when to go, or anything else that might enhance the experience? How often do you usually stay? Is there access to the practice facilities when the players report, only when the games begin, not at all?
Any observations from the community would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Spring Training..
Is absolutely a BLAST!!! Know that Pitchers & Catchers this year is Feb 20, with position players arriving a week later. There are NO Angels games until the first Monday of March. There’s nothing like going to Tempe Diablo and smelling that fresh cut grass after a winter.. Now, lets answer what I can from my experience. Yes, I’m going again this year. Normally go for a least a weekend, and then I can’t stand it and have to go and do what I call my “fly by”— I get on the first plane out of Orange County, go to the stadium, see the game and then get back on a plane and fly home..
Depending on what you like, will determine when you go to spring training. The first couple weeks or so, you’ll see the 25 man only for the first couple innings of any game. Then there’s the replacements and more replacements.. If you don’t mind watching the minor league kids, and just want a baseball fix, going earlier in the month is normally less crowded (maybe NOT this year!!!). If you just want to see the normal 25 man roster, you go later in the month, since that’s when those guys are more stretched out and they play more innings.
Where to stay: Many options are available. You want to stay somewhere in the “Tempe-ASU” part of the city, since that’s closest to the stadium. If you go on Hotwire or Priceline, there’s a 3.5 star Sheraton close to the park and you should be able to get it cheaper there. The rooms normally go for over $150 there, but we have gotten it closer to $60 a night thru Hotwire/Priceline. If money is no object, stay at the Marriott Buttes. This is the hotel right over the left field wall at Tempe Diablo. REALLY nice hotel/resort, but VERY pricey. If you look on Hotwire, if you find a 4 star in that neighborhood, and in the amenities it says RESORT, that’s the Buttes. Sometimes, closer to the date, you can get a GREAT deal there and book it for around $75 a night..
I’ll let someone else tell you about what all there is to do around Tempe.
ALL facilities for Spring Training are located at Tempe Diablo. This means minor league camp, too!! There are “lower” fields located on the other side of the parking lot from Tempe Diablo. Admission is free if you want to watch drills and stuff down there, or depending on when you go, there are games there, too. If you want to go down and watch when the Angels have a road game, you can go into the stadium and watch for free, too. Know that for road trips, only a few of the 25 man roster actually go, and most of them are at Tempe Diablo, normally having a simulated game with some of the minor leaguers. Practice fields (the lower fields) are always open to the public.
I can give you a normal timeline, too. Depending on how early you want to get up while you are on vacation… Players arrive about 8am. The walk for them from the main stadium to the lower fields starts approximately 930am. You’ll see more of the minor leaguers first, but then you’ll see the big boys, and NOT all of them. Normally, the starting 9 stay in the regular stadium. Game days, the stadium itself opens 1 hour before the game. If you are an autograph seeker, you’ll want to go down towards section 22, which is where the clubhouse entrance is. The players walk thru there all the time, or if it’s early in the season, once they are done playing, some will stand there and watch the game and chat with the fans. By the way, the Angels dugout is on the 1st base side of the stadium.
Hell, I just realized I need a life. I know all this without looking.

This comment should get it's own section on HH.
“Tempe Spring Training FAQ”, maybe?
Great stuff, patti.
I’d add that the Legacy Resort is a pretty dang nice place to stay as well. It’s only about a 5-minute drive from Tempe Diablo.
Some, if not all, of the Angels players stay there so you might have a sighting or two. My friend and I ran into Scot Shields and Jered Weaver at the hotel bar there two years ago. They also have a golf course on the grounds.
Christmas List: DFA Mathis, Trade Abreu, Fire Reagins, Sign Buehrle

A couple seasons ago
we had Hideki Matsui staying with us at the Sheraton.. It’s the one that says airport, not the Four Points Sheraton..
Yep, I stayed at the Legacy 2 years ago. Nice place.
There was at least a handful of players that would hang out with Shields there.
I saw Shields, Weaver and Kazmir playing with RC cars in the parking lot one day. I saw Mathis very briefly another day.
There could have been more, but I wasn’t at the hotel much.
Thank you so much pattimelt!!
This is incredibly helpful!! I will definitely use this to plan my trip if we can go.
Disregard above
Spring Training is no fun. Do not go there. Tell everyone you know.

Also, with "Rex Fregosi" usually on the scene ...
you feel like you’ve been there after looking through his pictures he occasionally posts from Tempe. So, no need to actually go in person with a great reporter like that posting pics!
I love this team.

Most of the strip clubs are around the airport.
"One time, when we got back to the locker room, all of our clothes were gone," Trout recalled. "They left me a Lady Gaga costume and I had to wear it."

My favorite time of year
Patti hit it on the head. I have a few favorite spots I like to hit as well. The Brewers ballpark in Maryvale is a hidden gem; quiet with shade over the seats and the best brats I’ve ever had. HoHoKam, where the Cubs play, is a big outdoor party with a baseball game going on and should definitely be on your radar.
The master schedule is listed at www.springtrainingonline.com and I’ve already planned my trip.
Don't forget the "Beer Guy"s at HoHoKam!
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
I've never been either
but me and some friends are trying to put together a trip over St Patty’s weekend. St Patty’s falls on a saturday, and I am seriously frothing at the mouth to go watch some Halos, then hit up downtown tempe to take full advantage of the ASU crop of ladies gallavanting around on the #1 drinking holiday of the year. fish in a barrel
"You realize that Ive been posting on AN since 07 on this name and I am one of the most rec'ed posters there right?" - Some tool named Designatedforassignment from Athletics Nation
That weekend might actually work for us too
As a newlywed, I think I will avoid the barrel of fish.
we are going that weekend also
2011, it's going to be a heck of year, or not

I live in Phx area so March is my favorite month of the year
You will definitely want to be centering your trip around Tempe because, well, thats where the Halos are based. But also, as Patti mentioned – you can head up there early to catch practices, also the starters at bp before road games, etc. The one thing that I would recommend is to try and catch games at other parks outside of Tempe as well. The cool thing about Cactus League is that now ALL parks are in the Phx area so none are gonna take you more than 45ish+ minutes to get to.
The new Salt River Park (AZ/CO) in Scottsdale and Camelback Ranch (LAD/ChiWS) in Glendale are beautiful. They are the two newest but they were built bigger than the original/older parks and (at least to me) feel a little less intimate (yes, I love my baseball). They are very cool though.
Scottsdale Park (SF) and Hohokam (ChiC) are really cool places to watch games too. They are older but really fun – if you plan on Hohokam, try and get your tix early cause there are an abundance of Cub fans (and they sell Old Style!). I agree with JeffJoiner too, Maryvale (MIL) is a nice hidden gem and a fun park (I say hidden because its in the least desirable neighborhood of all the parks). IMO, Phx Municipal (Oak) would be the “skip it” park. It is small so no seat is a bad seat but there is no outfield lawn and it just doesn’t create the best atmosphere – plus, there tends to be some A’s fans. It is the next closest park to Tempe though.
Peoria Sports Complex (SD/SEA) is not a bad place to go either (they have a lot of cool eateries not too far away too – and deep fried Oreos at the park), but it would be one of the farthest drives for anyone staying in Tempe. I have not yet been to the stadiums in Surprise (TX/KC) or Goodyear (CIN/CLE) but hope to soon (have heard some good things about both though).
Just my thoughts on some in case you wanted to plan around them.
I should be working right now...
LOVE Scottsdale park
But the funny part is that I’ve never been there for a spring training game. For some reason, I always end up there during Fall League!! I like the Peoria park too— not a bad seat in the house that I saw, but again, only during Fall League, and they block off the practice fields there for some reason, which I didn’t like..
I made myself laugh last night, when I realized I was making 3 trips to AZ during spring training this year!! Once before the games actually start, because my “adopted” minor league kid has his birthday then, and then a week at the beginning of the month and another couple of days later in the month.. I am gonna be so sick of the Phoenix airport after March.. sigh. But I DO have a frequent user card for super shuttle.. LOL
I've been to Goodyear and some others
They make a great cheesesteak and I was able to buy some autographed Bob Feller memorabilia. It’s surrounded by desert and has the feel of a really nice cookie-cutter home. It’s nice, it just feels like it was assembled at the local Home Depot.
Scottsdale is great, the garlic fries remind me of my time in NorCal, and HoHoKam is a blast. This year I’m going to hit Talking Stick; last year it was packed. I love the practice fields at Camelback.
Talking Stick is OK. The only problem is that it's so big, it loses some of the intimacy that I've come to expect from ST parks.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
Haven't checked the 2012 ST schedule yet...
…usually, the “main” team only plays one weekend game in Tempe, while the other weekend game is away at another teams ST facility. So if you get 2 weekend home games (i.e., at Tempe Diablo), one of the games will be mostly minor league players. That’s OK with me…I like to see the younger players. Just be warned.
At Tempe, try to arrive early (9:00 AM) to visit the practice fields to the west of the main stadium. You will see literally hundreds of Angel minor league players practicing/drilling on separate fields. To me, this is one of the highlights of ST. It gives a rare glimpse into coaching at this level.
The field closest to the main stadium is where is where that’s days players warm up. This is also the field where you will see the most ML players & coaches. And even the manager.
I wrote a series for HH almost 3 years ago. They can be found here, here here, and here.
Forgot to add...
…what Pattimelt wrote above is pretty damn good advice. Agree with all of her suggestions.
I wonder about that..
because when I have seen a split squad game, only a couple of the “main” guys have gone to the away game, and the rest are still at Tempe.. I forgot the rule about how many on the regular 25 man roster have to make a trip, but it’s not more than like 5…
66 days till I go to Tempe.. :)
