From outside the pay wall, ESPN's David Schoenfield breaks down the Halo's current lineup and arrives at the same conclusion that most of us cynics likely do:

"Right now, this a lineup with depth but not one that should strike fear in opposing pitchers."

Not to be a wet blanket with all the excitement surrounding El Hombre, but seriously: who bats cleanup if Kendrys can't play? And who the hell bats lead off?

1 2 3 4

Bourjos (bunt single)
Howie (fastball fastball double)
Pujols (9 pitch walk)
Torii (frustrated pitcher throws a meatball = grand slam)
Abreu (5 pitch walk)
Wells (popout)
Callaspo (single, Abreu goes to 3B)
Aybar (productive out RBI grounder to 1B)
Iannetta (who cares at this point)

by Rev Halofan on Dec 18, 2011 11:16 AM PST reply actions

The negative part of me would counter

Torii comes up with the bases loaded and grounds into a double play. one run scores

Abreu takes 6 pitches, strikeouts looking while not swinging at a single pitch.

Weaver has to shut down opposing lineup again.

No it's not.

Prince Fielder has a great OBP, should we put him in the leadoff spot?

The whole purpose of a leadoff hitter is to get the offense started. A big part of that is getting on base, but another big part of it is what you can do once you get on base. A great leadoff hitter is one who not only gets on base, but gets in the pitcher’s head once he is there. A great leadoff hitter is one who changes the way middle infielders position themselves, because they know that on any given pitch the guy can steal second, go first to third on a blooper to right or pull a hit and run. A great leadoff hitter is always causing a stir once he’s on the bases. If that’s the guy you want, Abreu no longer has the ability to do that and Callaspo never will.

Soon the love affair between Callaspo and HH is going to end. He’s an average 3B at best. We’re just happy because anything is better than Wood, but once we get a real 3B in there we’ll see what we’ve been missing.

morales is right some regards, but Callaspo is fine

Nice OBP, above-average defensive player.

More Howie please...

Prince Fielder...

would be the best option at leadoff on this team besides Albert Pujols

He's right

Prince Fielder would be our best leadoff hitter by far. For that matter, Albert Pujols IS our best leadoff hitter by far. However, both are more valuable in the middle of the lineup. With Albert and presumably a healthy Kendrys, I agree with batting Abreu leadoff (presumably over batting Wells at all). You need guys to get on base in front of Albert and Kendrys. I don’t care if they run like Bengie Molina.

Aybar/Izzy/Bourjos are our best options now

Trout will be soon.

Yea our offense isn't going to be Top 3 or anything

Vernon is still going to be dead weight, but he will be better than last year otherwise he won’t play as much. Iannetta could lose his right arm and be better than Mathis was the past what 5 years offensively. No one on the Angels had a year that I’d say they can’t repeat which I like.

But the strength of this team is the starting pitching. Santana is our 4th starter. Angels are going to win a lot of 4-2 games and 5-3 games. Our pitching staff even with our bullpen inadequacies was 1st in the AL in ERA. Even with Pinero and Chatwood not doing very well, and now their innings will essentially be replaced by CJ who has been one of the best starting pitchers in the AL the past 2 years.

Jim Bowden on Tony Reagins.

Style: Authoritative, brilliant baseball mind who works well in the trifecta with owner Arte Moreno and manager Mike Scioscia. Builds teams on pitching and defense up the middle. Active at trade deadlines, will trade prospects and has the resources to acquire All-Stars

by MH252525 on Dec 18, 2011 11:50 AM PST reply actions

Even though he's CRUSHING the ball in BP....and we all know how critical that is

…..the team would be foolish to expect anything from Morales in 2012. I do believe the team as currently constructed will still be manufacturing runs in 2012 to win games. Pitching remains the differentiator for the Halos.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

by mustard_man on Dec 18, 2011 12:20 PM PST reply actions

Schoenfield is an idiot.

I’m surprised he unlocked his lips off of Verlander’s genitals enough to have the time to write an article.

That aside, though, this offense should be in the 5—7 range in the AL. With the pitching staff, that really should be good enough.

by GTFO Fernando on Dec 18, 2011 12:30 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

Pujols certainly makes the line-up non-anemic...

but overall it’s still not great in my mind.

The most notable weakness is the lack of a left handed power bat. Now, if K-Mo can somewhat return to form and give us 25 homers and an .850 OPS batting primarily from the left side, that would be a huge boost. But then again, that’s a big “if” at this point in time.

Of course, there is reason for cautious optimism when it comes to guys like Hunter and Wells. Hunter started off terrible and then rebounded late. His overall numbers looked pedestrian due to the bad start but he showed that he can still produce at an above average level and now with Pujols in the mix, there will be less pressure for Torii to do as much so he can relax and I don’t think 25 homers, 90 RBIs, and an .820 OPS for Torii is out of the question.

The same argument can be made for Wells, though to a lesser degree. He showed that he can still hit for some power at the very least, even outside of Rogers Centre. He is never going to be good again and he will never live up to that contract, but there is no reason why he can’t improve from his abysmal Mathis impression in 2010. I could see him hitting somewhere in the neighborhood of .240/.300/.450 which isn’t great obviously, but would provide a huge upgrade to what we got last season.

we definitely need more to protect Pujols

Wells, Hunter, Trumbo really don’t do it for me. Morales might, but he’’s an unknown for now. We need a #4 hitter who will strike legitimate fear into opposing pitchers.

by Rex Fregosi on Dec 18, 2011 2:27 PM PST reply actions

Still think we should pull a trade for Youkilis.

His D at 3rd is no longer above-average, but I don’t think it’s as atrocious as some would make it.

Three way trade with Houston and Boston — send Wandy to Boston, and Trumbo and others to Houston. Houston saves money, Boston gets the SP they’re hunting for. Callaspo could even be a chip here.

Youkilis is an injury risk, but a 3-4 of Youk-Pujols for the next two years would score a lot of runs.

Probably just a pipe dream.

I would love to have another .400+ OBP guy in our lineup

what??

Is he serious? Apparently this guy hasn’t been reading Vernon’s tweets this offseason.

by Wytelitning on Dec 18, 2011 4:27 PM PST via mobile reply actions

We don't need a spectacular offense.

We aren’t in a position like Boston where we HAVE to hit in order to win. Rather, our offense just needs to do good enough. When all is said and done, all we will need from our offense to get into the postseason is league average production. Our pitching is so good, we don’t need to score 8 runs a game. With the staff we have, 4 should do it on most nights.

What stats can’t account for is the intangible effect that Albert will have on our lineup. Sure, it’s great to add a perennial 30+ HR, 100+ RBI guy into your lineup, but with Albert you get more than good offensive production. He is one of the few guys in baseball who can change an entire lineup. His presence makes everyone better, and his production alone takes the burden off our aging veterans to be “the guy”.

Not only do I expect better seasons out of guys like Hunter and Wells, I also expect our young players like Trumbo and Bourjos to take their game to the next level. We already know the absolute bottom for Wells, and nothing he can do can be better than last season. Given the trends with Scioscia the last couple seasons, if Wells doesn’t perform significantly better in the first month he is going to be replaced by Mike Trout. That’s a win-win. If Vernon produces like he did several years ago, we get good production from a position we got almost nothing from the previous season. If not, we begin the Mike Trout era.

Trumbo can hit 35 HR and drive in over 100 if he is given the opportunity. Bourjos has the potential to steal 40 bases, and I think in a year or two he’ll be doing it regularly. I thought even if we didn’t add any superstars this offseason, with a few teaks to our bullpen, we could win 90 games next year. Now, I expect somewhere around 95. When I look at this roster compared to our 100 win roster a couple years ago, I think this team is better.

by moralesforpresident on Dec 18, 2011 7:44 PM PST reply actions

Great points

but I think the ’09 offense was vastly superior to what we have so far this season. I could see Pujols being the equivalent in production to what Morales did that season (if not more). I think the difference is that we do not have a Chone Figgins-career-year-leadoff hitter that completely transformed that offense.

With that being said, the starters have the potential to put this team over the top. I pray this offense produces, or else we’re just this year’s version of last year’s Phillies.

Maybe the lineup looks weak around Albert

but that lineup won 86 games in ’11,
… without Pujols
… without Iannetta instead of Mathis
… without CJ instead of Piniero.

Should be good for 96+ wins in ‘12.
Don’t worry about the rest of the lineup. They’re good enough to win it.

Doesn’t ever feel like the Angels have an OK year offensively. Either everyone is on fire or everyone is awful and we scratch and claw for 2-1 wins

A lot of Sports Writers talk about Pujol's decline...

….but don’t they remember he broke his wrist in the middle of the season, healed like Wolverine and still 37 HRs in 147 games?! He ONLY missed 15 games this past season due to his broken wrist….or arm. Don’t remember which one. If Izturis sneezes, he’s out two weeks.

Pujols is THE MACHINE. I expect a .900+ OPS season from him.

by cuscus85 on Dec 19, 2011 12:22 PM PST reply actions

With Pujols in the line up...

This Angel Offense has been great improved. But with the exception of first base, isn’t pretty much everyone else in the Rangers batting line up more of a threat?

Someone who loves the stats compare:

2B Kendrick – Kinsler
SS Aybar – Elvis
3B Callaspo – Beltre
RF Hunter – Cruz
CF Borjous – Hamilton
LF Wells – Murphy
C Iannetta – Napoli
DH Abreu – Young

Not bad off of memory and sorry if I didn’t have the exact roster for the Rangers…

Just rating offense:

Kinsler over Kendrick
Elvis over Aybar
Beltre over Callaspo
Cruz / Hunter even
Hamilton over Borjous
Murphy over Wells
Naps over Ianetta
Young over Abreu
Albert over Moreland
