all out- trade for longoria
sign Oswalt or Kuroda to $10m/yr for 2 years
Trade-SP-Santana, he is due to have more or less than John Danks money ($65/5) to the yankees for C-Gary Sanchez(Top 2 NY prospect),LHP-M.Banuelos(4th),SS/3B-Nunez(8th)
then trade for:
3B-longoria
Rays recieve:
3B-Callaspo, fills for Longoria
C-Conger or Sanchez, high prospect and can have Playing time (undoubtly better than j.molina)
1B-Trumbo, they are in need of 1B (and Trumbo is years away from arbitration)- RAYS will love his contract status (runner up in ROY)
DH-Morales or Abreau, they are in need of DH, there's the injury doubt but for $2m+, he is a low risk - high reward type (if healthy definitely miles better than Damon), if they doubt Morales health they can choose Abreau and the Angels will eat half of its contract
2B-Izturis or Nunez, are way better than they're current 2nd baseman (very versatile infielder)can play multiple infield positions
what do you think?

We have a club option on Santana for 2013.
All we have to do is say “you’re playing here” and he will be.

Going to purge this post from my memory
Off to the kitchen for some Milk of Amnesia…
"The contract is brought up a lot. What it's going to take to get past it is winning. This organization took on the contract. I'm here to make them look good."~Vernon Wells
Let's start with the easy part
There is no motivation for the Rays to trade Longoria. None. “Because I want them to trade Longoria” is not a valid reason. He below-reality cheap, with team options for 2014, 2015 and 2016, never more than $11.5M any of those years. Unless you’re prepared to make an incredibly stupid offer to try and pry him loose (like Trout, Richards and Segura, along with Weaver and a ton of cash), it won’t happen.
It. Won’t. Happen.
So your post above is really a massive episode of wanking, one which has been done repeatedly here by those before you who, likewise, believed they had discovered fire and rushed to give the rest of us the good news.
As an aside, if you’re going to write about player, especially players on this team, have the good form and the modest edumacation to spell their names correctly. It isn’t “Abreau”. It’s Abreu. You’ll find the name very conveniently spelled out for you on the front page of this site.
Don’t misunderstand me, this isn’t about being a grammar nazi. If you stumble over Yoennis Cespedes, I think just about anyone would let it pass. But if your intent is to be taken seriously as an analyst of this team and its personnel, then you should take the extra 10 seconds before clicking POST and review your work, lest you butcher the name of the very player whose value you presume to understand.
It’s a sign of pride. It’s a sign of consideration for your reader. It’s just smart.

I’ve been thinking to add segura, but since Im an LA homer, haha, I turn to be a little conservative..
i think santana, trumbo, morales, conger, callaspo and segura will make them think about it.
Santana-a proven SP, trumbo-ROY-runner up(and he will improve specially hitting in AL east),morales-hit for high ave/high power(health concerns),Conger-needs only playing time to prove himself, segura(top 3 Angels prospect) is not bad..
It covers them the three positions they are at worst (1B,DH,C), a ave 3B, and a high prospect 2B. And all of them are in long term team control at cheap price except Santana and Morales(arbitration)
Quality, not quantity matters in trades
Andrew Friedman is not Tony Reagins. Trout would absolutely have to be included in any package. Furthermore, Morales has no value until he proves he is back from the injury. Lastly, aside from Trout and Richards – being a “top rated prospect” in the Halos farm system does not seem to resonate beyond Angels fans.
Supposedly the Yankees balked at the same prospects being included for Gio Gonzales. I love Santana, but Gio is a better value.
As much as I’d love to see Longoria on the Angels, it’s not going to happen any time soon.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
by fangraphs segura and conger (top2&3)prospects, i dont see why you named Richards, and the rays dont need pitching.
trading top2&3 propects proven SP +ROYrunner-upAboveAve3B+Morales
for comparisons sake: matt Holliday is traded to Cards for Propect Brett Wallace, Peterson and Mortenson (Wallace is the only highly regarded prospect)
Offensively, Holliday and Longoria’s number are similar, and the only advantage Longoria has is his Team friendly contract.
with that offer, surely the rays will think twice..
EVERY team needs pitching
It’s the coin of the realm. What is surplus to one team becomes a bargaining chip for something they do need.
Beyond that, your comp to Holliday is ridiculous. Holliday was a free agent at the end of that season, when he was traded by Oakland to St Louis. The compensation was for renting him for the few remaining months of the season.
As stated previously, there are three TEAM options on Longoria’s contract which keep him under team control (and at the team’s discretion) through the 2016 season. The two player’s contractual situations are completely different.

that’s why i stated that Longoria’s advantage is his team friendly contract..
but the players we are trading are 10x or more better.. im just saying, I just think there’s a chance that the Rays will think about it
Are you really arguing the rays will want to trade longoria... for anyone?
by Balls and Strikes on Dec 22, 2011 8:54 AM PST up reply actions
Nobody is untradeable
But off the top of my head I can’t think of many more “untouchable” big leaguers than Longo.
by stevefinleyallstars on Dec 22, 2011 9:03 AM PST up reply actions
Vernon taught us that
When TR heard that most people though he was untradeable I think he may have got the wrong end of the stick…
If the Rays don't need pitching, then why would they do this trade if Santana is the principle piece they're getting?
They have a logjam of SPs anyway. If this trade were of remote interest to them, wouldn’t they say “Thanks but no thanks for Santana; we’ll take Trout, thank you. Oh and you can keep Morales.”
by stevefinleyallstars on Dec 22, 2011 8:29 AM PST up reply actions
the Rays are in rumor of trading one of their SPs for BATS, especially Davis.. So if they recieve Santana, and trade Davis, so their SP’s is still one of the best.
Then they still have 6 starters
Price, Hellickson, Moore, Niemann, Shields, and under your proposal, Santana. How much better would their staff be with Santana instead of Niemann? It’s a marginal improvement. Meanwhile, they traded their best player (Longoria, arguably the best 3B in the game) for some misfit toys and a couple of prospects that may or may not pan out. I don’t know, but to me that sounds like they aren’t improving their ball club.
This is a move that a rebuilding team would make. With their pitching as is, Tampa is a lot closer to winning the World Series than trying to rebuild their club.
by stevefinleyallstars on Dec 22, 2011 8:44 AM PST up reply actions
Exactly
Gonzalez is LHP and under team control through 2015 season. Santana is a free agent after 2013 season. Santana might be more mature and knowledgeable due to experience, but no team is going to surrender its prize prospects for someone who is good as gone in two years, unless a lot of money is provided to him in the form of an extension.
Likewise, Morales has much more value to the Angels than he does any other team, due to the fact that any team which trades for him gives up something of value in exchange for a player who will cost at least $3M in 2012 but who might or might not be ready to play in April (or June, or ever). The Angels can take that roll of the dice because they don’t have to surrender any players to find out if Kendrys is ready to go, but I can’t imagine any GM would trade for Morales until he has shown the ability to run from 1B to 3B without looking like Chester Goode in the process.

the yankees prospects are not as good as the other farms, besides Jesus Montero, and even if they include him, I doubt the Oakland will trade them there. That’s why i dont think the Yamkees can fetch Gio or any pitcher better than Santana.
Why am I protracting this discussion?
Hmmmm….

This
Plus, the Yankees wouldn’t give up that package for a player who only has two years of club control left.
The ONLY way the Rays pick up the phone is this offer:
Trout, Bourjos, Rickards, Conger and your Mom

Also, nothing against Ervin's skillset
If the Yankees are going to trade a bushel of their best prospects it won’t be for Santana. They would likely try to target a Felix Hernandez-type. Since Steinbrenner died, they have been increasingly stingy with their prospects.

Damn
How much has TV censorship changed since Howard Stern went to satellite? Remember when the A Team used to shoot at the bad guy’s feet because blood was too much to deal with? Or how Cobra soldiers always parachuted out of the fiery explosion?
I expect FX or AMC to come out with a show about a transgendered priest who fights crime. But just as the audience is getting comfortable with him/her, a serial killer comes along and tortures him/her to death over the last five episodes of the season. All the teases and previews will make you believe he/she survives but the last shot of the season is a decapitated head with the credits rolling in front of it.
Hmmmm…………..What started out as a joke might be something worth watching…………. Anyone want to collaborate on a script?
Yeah, I'd definitely watch that.

And why would the Rays accept anything less than the number 1 prospect in a team’s system plus a couple of young MLB guys?

Worse than most of you. That makes me smile like a douchbag.
Let's start with Trout, Conger, Trumbo, Segura, and cash considerations...
I would love to have Longo on the team but his contract is perfect for the Rays and he is after all the best third baseman in the game. If the Angels were to look into getting a new third baseman I would look at Chase Headley. But I think the Angels need a solid left handed bat that could rotate around (not Abreu trade Abreu if at all possible.)
ok my mistake

that is possible
