Angels Get Tweet of the Decade
Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweeted a masterpiece of swagger on behalf of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim late Wednesday night:
The #Angels say that they can afford to sign both Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson, shelling out in excess of $300 milliion.
C.J. Wilson has less mileage on his arm than any pitcher in baseball with his numbers over the past two seasons. Albert Pujols had a 150 OPS+ in 2012, the worst full season of his career. Arte Moreno is not talking this Winter. He's signing checks.

Hi Red!
How are you today? I get to go to the airport in about 20 minutes to pick up our youngest child, the Wandering One. She’s home for a couple of weeks before heading to Australia.

Hi Opie! I'm walking on sunshine today!
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
This is worse than Christmas Eve when you're six.
I’m going to bed, but I’ll probably lie awake waiting for the sound of hooves on the roof and little silvery bells.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
You're quite a gal
I wish you could convey that to my wife! Don’t get me wrong, she loves the Angels and is pretty baseball savvy. But I just said the same thing to her, that I won’t be able to sleep tonight, and she made a face at me with some commeent about how pathetic I am.

what the..
pujols and wilson is just a dream..
but if the Angels can shed out $220/10 years for pujols,
WHY not $150/7 for fielder and $75/5 for wilson..
fielder+wilson>>pujols alone
its a no-brainer, unless of course ou GM is ……….

Fielder is good but pujols is the best player of this generation
And maybe you missed it, but reagins got canned and dipoto has done a pretty good job so far.

by moralesforpresident on Dec 8, 2011 12:27 AM PST up reply actions
yes pujols>fielder, but with the money to sign pujols you can have fielder+wilson which is better than pujols.. and for the long term, at least fielder estimately will give us 1 bad year at his last year, but how many bad years will pujols gives us at the end of the contract.. 3 yrs @ 22m each??
You dont know who will be more productive over their contract
Fielder could drop off a cliff just like his dad, pujols could be crushing baseballs into his mid 40s… Or fielder could be a champ and pujols could slow down.
Every contract has risk. Pujols is less of a threat to drop off a cliff than fielder.
by Balls and Strikes on Dec 8, 2011 12:56 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
huh?
pujols is almost a lock at ten years.. fielder at 7… so if you take into account pujols at 41&42 is greater risk than fielder at 34&35
ortiz may not be as fat as fielder, but the similarity is there, and look ortiz is still productive.. i dont know if any 40 year old hitter can be that productive??
You mean the guy on steroids?
Yeah, good comparison.
This is a sig.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Dec 8, 2011 5:09 AM PST up reply actions
You are too optimistic on Fielder’s price. We have edge to sign Pujols because we can let Pujols play DH at the final 3-4 years of the contract and Marlins/Cubs/Cards cannot let him do that. That is the reason I do not think Fielder’s contract will be that cheap. Many NL teams will make offers because they do not need to consider about Fielder cannot play defense at his age of 34 or 35.
You're Way Off
as far as what it will take to sign Fielder.
He turned down an extension from the Brewers at 8 years, $176 million before he even became a free agent. You’re delusional if you think he can now be had for $26 million less.
It will take more than $200 million to land Fielder.
Hmmm I would have preferred an 8yr/200 but damn let's see what happens...
I don’t think I want Pujols when he’s 40/41 years old
I would, as long as we have him for the 10 years prior to that!!

There sure is a lot of bitching going on around here. Can’t the naysayers just give it a chance? In my opinion, this has been the most exciting offseason action the Angels have had since 04. Quit whining and have some faith!
by Jason Andrew Martin on Dec 8, 2011 12:48 AM PST via iPhone app reply actions
hmmm
i believe in almost every offseason, the Angels are always in the discussion for high profile free agent signing.. the problem is, it always end there, i will be virtually shock if we sign albert pujols after striking out to texiera, crawford and others..??
the positive side, both boston and NY are not in it this year.. so maybe this is the year??
That's exactly why you get negative feedback here on too-good-to-be-true reports.
Until the new Angels front office regime stops the trend, there will always be skepticism on stuff like this. We’ve heard for years how we have the money and the willingness, bu somehow it always ends there.
I’d love for these rumors to be true, but in the baseball world we have to see it to believe it.
by moralesforpresident on Dec 8, 2011 2:27 AM PST up reply actions
I think the thing about Pujols
is that he’d always be a Cardinal..kinda like remembering Vlad as an Expo. I’m not sure Fielder is entrenched as a Brewer. But I’m not sure we’d get Fielder. Remember, his dad, Cecil Fielder grew up around the West Covina – La Puente area and went to high school right there in south Rowland Heights. As much as Fielder hates his dad, maybe he doesn’t want to be near that area. So I say, let’s go for Pujols, sign C.J. and then trade Trumbo to the Marlins for Bonifacio, after they trade away Hanley. (Borjous + Trout + Bonifacio would be killer!)
And BTW...I know it's Jim Bowden...
but he’s reporting that C.J Wilson is going to sign with us tomorrow. SBNation reported it, no word from the Mothership.
Additional benefit of signing Pujols
Our highest paid player would actually be worth what he is getting paid
Fight on!
EMAW!

this has been the one i've been afraid of for awhile
Boston has been jonesing for Hanley for a few years now and they have a big problem at SS. At some point I thought NYY might be open to trading Tex for a SP and an OF to sign Pujols, but Boston could swoop.

Arte is about marketing and smells $$$
Pujols will be chasing down ARod/Bonds HR record toward the end of the deal, DHing and mashing the ball ala Thome, imagine that added revenue. Fat guys who get paid get fatter into their mid 30’s, nobody wants Mo Vaughn 2.0.
"NO Trout for you." -- Tony Reagins, 5/23/11
Good point.
I’m sure his agent is marketing that. With Albert Pujols, you aren’t just signing an extremely productive player. You are signing one of the best in the game, and one of the all-time greats. You are signing a guy who, during the life of this next contract, is bound to break all kinds of records. The Angels have few players throughout their franchise history that even come close to being in the discussion of all-time greats. This would be a rare opportunity for Arte to put a stamp on this organization.
Arte hasn’t won a World Series with this team yet, and it is obvious how eager he is to win one. If he wants to shift the power in the AL West with one swift move, I think this is it. A signing like this could potentially end Texas’ short reign over the division. Usually I would say we are at least a couple moves away from taking the division from Texas, but a move of this magnitude would alone be enough to shake the balance in our division, and maybe even the American League.

If Halos sign Pujols and Wilson
and the Lakers acquired Dwight Howard and CP3, I will die from joy. And if somehow UCLA basketball lands Shabazz Muhammad and UCLA football acquires a decent football coach, I will…well I don’t know. Scary thoughts. Too bad the part about UCLA football will never happen though. Everything else is possible!
For your dream to come true...
They also need to fire Howland and get a big-time Coach.
I’m with you on the rest of it. It would be pretty awesome.
Folks be careful....
…..rumor and speculation are the things that break hearts. We all know the Angels can be a tease.
The twin killing is by no means assured — both Pujols and Wilson were said to be struggling with their decisions on Wednesday night.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
"Struggling with their decisions"....
Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home……if you’re mature enough to realize it.
Pujols stays in St. Louis and CJ returns to OC.
Sports news media is trying to inflate “anger” Pujols feels for Cards. Having Stan Musiel beckon Pujols has to be tearing him up.
Gosh! I hope the Angels don’t overpay CJ.
On the other hand......
I was one of the first to point out that LaRussa’s retiring foretold that Puhols was history.

Recall that last year, early in the Hot Stove cycle, it was rumored that the Angels would sign
all of Cliff Lee, Carl Crawford, and Adrian Beltre. The gladly took on $21MM/year.
Three years ago, we supposedly offered Teixeira $160MM/8years = $20MM/year. $21MM/year for 10 years isn’t that far off.
Maybe the Angels weren’t bullshittin’.
sad that reagins couldnt get it done, good thing dipoto is here now
