How the Pujols Deal Went Down. Fascinating!
A play by play on how the deal went down. What I found most interesting was this quote here:
Moreno, who watched the Angels fall short in recent years trying to lure free agents Carl Crawford, Mark Teixeira, Adrian Beltre and CC Sabathia, took the reins. He made two impassioned calls to Pujols. He told Pujols that they planned to also sign Wilson. They weren't going to stop being aggressive in the market until they won a World Series championship, their first since 2002 and first under Moren0.

Just amazing...
…we really did swoop in at the last minute! I wonder which was the mystery team? Cubs? Yanks? Sux?
The mystery team had a first baseman they would have to move
Also Cashman said he was called by Pujols camp and “politely” declined to get involved in the bidding.

Is what Siri came up with when I was trying to send a text.
This is the fourth best day of my Angel fandom career-
1. Winning the Series.
2. Game 6, 2002.
3. Seeing the first pennant win in ‘79. Carew shovels the ball to Tanana to nail Porter, and the stadium erupts in sound.
4. Checking the screen and seeing a double score of the biggest free agents in years. How cool is that- I’m kind of stunned, with a really dumb grin on my face even now.

Additional Insight
Wilson sat down with the MLB Network crew this afternoon to talk about his deal. Since the negotiations apparently were taking place simultaneously, they actually told Wilson they were making a major deal and so there was a firm, finite budget for his offer.
It sounded like Wilson agreed before Pujols, but his deal was announced second.
Doesn't matter the order of the signings
Pujols had the higher Elias ranking, and that’s all that mattered. If Wilson had signed first, the Rangers were still getting the lesser pick.

Since I attended my first Angels game as a child in 1977. . . .
I have been waiting for the Angels to go head to head for regional popularity with the Duhdgers. I have been waiting for them to act like they were smack dab in America’s second largest media market and worth something for having rights in that lucrative territory. I was waiting for Gene Autry, Disney, somebody, to step up as an owner and act like the Angels were a big market team—and not in the TR way of being a stupid big market team like the Cubs.
Finally. Finally. Finally!!!!!
Thanks Mr. Moreno and Mr. Dipoto. It’s nice to see championship level front office action rather than world class excuse making. Now, let’s not continue to have 2002 look like a fluke.
Roses Ain't Orange!
All that happened in 2004
The Angels signed Colon and Esobar, two of the top FA pitchers. Then Arte announced the Brinks Truck has left the building. Then out of nowhere they sign the superstar Vlad Guerrero, when everyone expected he was going to sign with the Dodgers. Now that was the sign the Angels had arrived.
This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.
-Clipper Darrell
That was then, this is different. Much different.
This day was not only about hoisting a middle finger at Tejas, it was throwing the other one up at the carpetbagging Duhghers. These signings are about Arte finally getting deadly serious about hardware and owning America’s #2 media market against the rudderless club in Chavez Ravine. This is a bold play to capture an entire generation of young fans away from that stupid NL club up the freeway with the Hollywood box seats along third.
If all of this pans out like it could, December 8, 2011 will be the date the Angels’ ascension from second fiddle in LA—to an enduring place in the big market elite—is marked from.
Ah Look! My California Angels are now all grown up!
Sweet
Now get us some real announcers.
I was surprised to read that the Angels had the second-lowest local television ratings among major league teams last year.
With the MLB package, I find myself often listening to the other teams announcers because ours are lacking.
That has nothing to do with announcers
Rojas is good. Gubicza does need to go, but he’s not the one keeping people away. It’s simply a matter of the area. I can pretty much guarantee those ratings will go up, though.

I don't know about that
I have ‘friends’ who watch the Dodgers cause of Scully.
The ratings are misleading.
The Angels had a lower PERCENTAGE of local viewers than most teams, but their actual viewership was considerably higher. Also, add to the 60,000 households (3 per household, I believe) watching the Angels the 280,000 or so who were listening on the radio and you actually get over 400,000 people tuning into Angels games every night. That’s not too shabby at all.
gotcha. thanks for clarification
I didn’t realize they were cherry picking the terminology to drive a point. % of market doesn’t mean crap, what matters is total viewers.
I thought it seemed strange that we would be so low relative to some small markets without a lot of people.

Do you know who their first baseman is?
I doubt that they want to trade Justin Smoak and that they have that kind of money.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Of Those
White Sox and Rockies seem the most likely. Konerko is owed $25 million, while Colorado is on the hook for $10M to Helton. The Reds make no sense because they also have Alonso. The Twins still owe $28 million to Morneau, but I cannot believe they have the budget to take on Pujols. Tigers…OK, yeah, I could see that.
Phillies perhaps?
Ryan howard is expensive….
ryan howard...
is a good theory, (makes sense if the phillies couldn’t find a trade partner with an injured ryan howard)
reds have votto and alonzo, so they’d have to look to move 2 players, almost like us…
i still have this feeling that it could’ve been the tigers…with all the off-field problems with miggy..

I would rather have A Gon and his contract than Pujols and his contract
Don’t get me wrong, I’m stocked on Pujols.
But Agon is making ~$21M/year for ages 28-35 while Pujols is making $25M/year for ages 32-41.
I would rather have Pujols.
If the owner is willing to spend 4 million more a year (which he wouldn’t necessarily spend on another player, or an upgrade at another position) then you ALWAYS want the better player.
In the Am League Pujols can play DH at the end of his career if he can’t play 1B.
AGon is no where near as good as Pujols, and nowhere near the marketing coup.
In the long run men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.

A-Gon would have been dealt to the Marlins for Hanley Ramirez or A-Gon to the Cubs for Starlin Castro
But I could also have imagined the Nationals…I mean, who’s there right now? Michael Morse?
A-Gon doesn't have a no trade claus?
would the BoSox really rather have Pujols over A-Gon? I wouldn’t if I were them, considering AGon’s contract compared to Pujols’
